Chapter 1
Alexandrinus | Vaticanus |

1 Now after the death of Joshua it happened, that the sons of Israēl asked Yahweh, saying, “Who shall go up for us against the Canaanites first, to fight against them?”
1 And it came to be, after the death of Jēsou, that the sons of Israēl were inquiring to the Lord, saying, “Who shall go up for us toward the Chananite as leader, to fight with him?” | 1 And it came to be, after the death of Jēsou, that the sons of Israēl were inquiring by the Lord, saying, “Who shall go up for us toward the Chananite as leader, to fight against them?” |
2 And Yahweh said, “Judah shall go up. Listen! I have delivered the land into his hand.”
2 And the Lord said, “Joudas shall go up. Look! I have given the land in his hand.” | 2 And the Lord said, “Joudas shall go up. Look! I have given the land in his hand.” |
3 And Judah said to Simeon his brother, “Come up with me into my allotment, that we may fight against the Canaanites; and likewise I will go with you into your allotment.” So Simeon went with him.

3 And Joudas said to his brother Symeōn, “Come up with me in my allotment, and let us fight against the Chananite, and indeed I also will go with you in your allotment.” And Symeōn went with him. | 3 And Joudas said to his brother Symeōn, “Come up with me in my allotment, and let us deploy troops against the Chananites, and I also will go with you in your allotment.” And Symeōn went with him. |
4 And Judah went up; and Yahweh delivered the Canaanites and the Perizzites into their hand; and they killed 10,000 men at Bezek.
4 And Joudas went up, and the Lord gave the Chananite and the Pherezite in his hand, and he struck them down at Bezek, 10,000 men. | 4 And Joudas went up, and the Lord gave over the Chananite and the Pherezite into their hands, and they cut them down at Bezek, about 10,000 men. |
5 And they found Adonibezek in Bezek; and they fought against him, and they killed the Canaanites and the Perizzites.
5 And they found Adōnibezek at Bezek and fought against him and struck down the Chananite and the Pherezite. | 5 And they came on Adōnibezek at Bezek and deployed troops against him and cut down the Chananite and the Pherezite. |
6 But Adonibezek fled; and they pursued after him, and caught him, and cut off his thumbs and his big toes.
6 And Adōnibezek fled, and they pursued after him and caught him and cut off the tips of his hands and of his feet. | 6 And Adōnibezek fled, and they chased after him and they captured him and cut off the tips of his hands and the tips of his feet. |
7 And Adonibezek said, “Seventy kings who had their thumbs and their big toes cut off, picked up scraps under my table. As I have done, so God has repaid me.” And they brought him to Jerusalem, and there he died.

8 Now the sons of Judah had fought against Jerusalem, and had taken it, and smitten it with the edge of the sword, and set the city on fire.

9 And afterward, the sons of Judah went down to fight against the Canaanites, who dwelt in the mountain, and in the south, and in the valley.
9 And after that the sons of Joudas went down to fight against the Chananite who lived in the hill country and the south and the plain. | 9 And after that the sons of Joudas went down to fight with the Chananite who lived in the hill country and the south and the plain. |
10 And Judah went against the Canaanites who dwelt in Hebron; (now the name of Hebron before was Kirjatharba;) and they killed Sheshai, and Ahiman, and Talmai.

14 And it came to be, when she entered, that he urged her to ask for the field from her father. 16 And the sons of the Kenite, Moses’ father-in-law, went up out of the city of palm trees with the sons of Judah into the wilderness of Judah, which lies in the south of Arad; and they went and dwelt among the people.
16 And the sons of Jōbab the Kinite, father-in-law to Moses, went up out of the City of Palms to the sons of Joudas, into the wilderness that is in the south near the descent of Arad. And he went and settled with the people. | 16 And the sons of Iothor the Kinite, inlaw of Moses, went up from the City of Palms with the sons of Joudas, into the wilderness that is to the south of Joudas, that is near the descent of Arad. And they settled with the people. |
17 And Judah went with Simeon his brother, and they killed the Canaanites that inhabited Zephath, and utterly destroyed it. And the name of the city was called Hormah.
17 And Joudas departed with his brother Symeōn, and they struck down the Chananite who inhabited Sepheth and anathematized it and destroyed it. And they called the name of the city Destruction. | 17 And Joudas went with his brother Symeōn, and he cut down the Chananite who inhabited Sephek, and they destroyed them. And he called the name of the city Anathema. |
18 Also Judah took Gaza with its coast, and Askelon with its coast, and Ekron with its coast.
18 And Joudas didn’t inherit Gaza and its territory and Ascalōn and its territory and Akkarōn and its territory and Azōtus and its surrounding lands. | 18 And Joudas didn’t inherit Gaza or its territories or Ascalōn or its territories or Akkarōn or its territories or Azōtus or its surrounding lands. |
19 And Yahweh was with Judah; and he drove out the inhabitants of the mountain; but couldn’t drive out the inhabitants of the valley, because they had iron chariots.
19 And the Lord was with Joudas, and he inherited the hill country, because he was unable to inherit the inhabitants of the valley, because Rēchab commanded it. | 19 And the Lord was with Joudas and he inherited the hill country, because they were unable to destroy the inhabitants of the valley, because Rēchab gave commands to them. |
20 And they gave Hebron to Caleb, as Moses said, and he expelled the three sons of Anak from there.
20 And he gave Chebrōn to Chaleb, just as Moses had said, and from there he inherited the three cities and removed from there the three sons of Enak. | 20 And they gave Chebrōn to Chaleb, just as Moses had said, and from there he inherited the three cities of the sons of Enak. |
21 And the sons of Benjamin didn’t drive out the Jebusites that inhabited Jerusalem; but the Jebusites dwell with the sons of Benjamin in Jerusalem to this day.
21 And the sons of Benjamin didn’t remove the sons of Jebousite who dwelt in Jerousalēm, and the Jebousite has lived with the sons of Benjamin to this day. | 21 And the sons of Benjamin didn’t dispossess the Jebousite who lived in Jerousalēm, and the Jebousite has lived with the sons of Benjamin in Jerousalēm to this day. |
22 And the house of Joseph also went up against Bethel; and Yahweh was with them.
22 And the sons of Jōsēph, indeed they also went up toward Baithēl, and Joudas with them. | 22 And the sons of Jōsēph, indeed they too went up toward Baithēl, and the Lord was with them. |
23 And the house of Joseph sent to spy out Bethel. (Now the name of the city before was Luz.)
23 And the house of Israēl encamped against Baithēl (now the name of the city was formerly Louza). | 23 And they encamped and spied out Baithēl (now the name of their city was formerly Louza). |
24 And the spies saw a man coming out of the city, and they said to him, “Show us, please, the entrance into the city, and we will show you mercy.”
24 And those who were on guard saw a man coming out of the city, and they captured him and said to him, “Show us the city entrance, and we will do mercy with you.” | 24 And those who were on guard looked, and see! a man was coming out of the city, and they captured him and said to him, “Show us the city entrance, and we will do mercy with you.” |
25 And when he showed them the entrance into the city, they smote the city with the edge of the sword; but they let go the man and all his family.
25 And he showed them the city entrance, and they struck the city with the edge of the sword, but they sent away the man and his family. | 25 And he showed them the city entrance, and they struck the city with the edge of the sword, but they sent away the man and his family. |
26 And the man went into the land of the Hittites, and built a city, and called its name Luz; which is its name to this day.
