Jacōb’s Deception

1 And it happened, that when Isaac was old, and his eyes were dim, so that he couldn’t see, he called Esau his eldest son, and said to him, “My son.” And he said to him, “Behold, here am I.”

1 And it happened after Isaac was old, that his eyes were dimmed to see; and he called Hēsau, his elder son, and said to him, “My son.” And he said, “Yes, I am.” 1 And it happened after Isaac was old, that his eyes were dimmed to see; and he called Hēsau, his elder son, and said to him, “My son.” And he said, “Yes, I am.”

2 And he said, “Behold now, I am old, I don’t know the day of my death.

2 And he said, “Look! I have grown old, and don’t know the day of my death. 2 And he said, “Look! I have grown old, and don’t know the day of my death.

3 Now therefore take, please, your weapons, your quiver and your bow, and go out to the field, and get me some venison.

3 Now then take your weapons, both the quiver and the bow, and go into the plain, and hunt game for me, 3 Now then take your weapons, both the quiver and the bow, and go into the plain, and hunt game for me,

4 And make me savoury food, such as I love, and bring it to me, that I may eat; that my soul may bless you before I die.”

4 and prepare food for me, as I like, and bring it to me in order that I may eat, so that my soul might bless you before I die.” 4 and prepare food for me, as I like, and bring it to me in order that I may eat, so that my soul might bless you before I die.”

5 And Rebekah heard when Isaac spoke to Esau his son. And Esau went to the field to hunt for venison, and to bring it.

5 And Rhebekka heard Isaac speaking to Hēsau his son; and Hēsau went to the plain to hunt game for his father. 5 And Rhebekka heard Isaac speaking to Hēsau his son; and Hēsau went to the plain to hunt game for his father.

6 And Rebekah spoke to Jacōb her son, saying, “Behold, I heard your father speak to Esau your brother, saying,

6 And Rhebekka said to Jacōb her younger son, “Listen, I heard your father speaking to Hēsau your brother, saying, 6 And Rhebekka said to Jacōb her younger son, “Listen, I heard your father speaking to Hēsau your brother, saying,

7 ‘Bring me venison, and make me savoury food, that I may eat, and bless you before Yahweh before my death.’

7 ‛Bring me game, and prepare food for me; after I eat, I will bless you in the Lord’s presence before I die.’ 7 ‛Bring me game, and prepare food for me; after I eat, I will bless you in the Lord’s presence before I die.’

8 Now therefore, my son, obey my voice according to what I command you.

8 Now then, son, hear me, as I issue instructions to you. 8 Now then, son, hear me, as I issue instructions to you.

9 Go now to the flock, and fetch me from there two good kids of the goats; and I will make them savoury food for your father, such as he loves.

9 And go to the sheep and get two kids for me there, tender and good, and I will make them food for your father, as he likes. 9 And go to the sheep and get two kids for me there, tender and good, and I will make them food for your father, as he likes.

10 And you shall bring it to your father, that he may eat, and that he may bless you before his death.”

10 And bring them in to your father, and he will eat, so that your father may bless you before he dies.” 10 And bring them in to your father, and he will eat, so that your father may bless you before he dies.”

11 And Jacōb said to Rebekah his mother, “Behold, Esau my brother is a hairy man, and I am a smooth man.

11 And Jacōb said to Rhebekka, his mother, “Hēsau my brother is a hairy man, and I am a smooth man. 11 And Jacōb said to Rhebekka, his mother, “Hēsau my brother is a hairy man, and I am a smooth man.

12 My father perhaps will feel me, and I shall seem to him as a deceiver; and I shall bring a curse on me, and not a blessing.”

12 Perhaps my father might feel me, and I will be before him like one who despises and bring a curse on me, and not a blessing.” 12 Perhaps my father might feel me, and I will be before him like one who despises and bring a curse on me, and not a blessing.”

13 And his mother said to him, “Upon me be your curse, my son: only obey my voice, and go fetch me them.”

13 And his mother said to him, “On me be your curse, child. Only obey my voice; and after going, bring them to me.” 13 And his mother said to him, “On me be your curse, child. Only obey my voice; and after going, bring them to me.”

14 And he went, and fetched, and brought them to his mother; and his mother made savoury food, such as his father loved.

14 After he went, he took and brought them to his mother. And his mother made food, as his father liked. 14 After he went, he took and brought them to his mother. And his mother made food, as his father liked.

15 And Rebekah took good clothing of her eldest son Esau, which were with her in the house, and put them on Jacōb her younger son.

15 And after Rhebekka took the good robe of Hēsau her older son, which was with her in the house, she put it on Jacōb her younger son. 15 And after Rhebekka took the good robe of Hēsau her older son, which was with her in the house, she put it on Jacōb her younger son.

16 And she put the skins of the kids of the goats on his hands, and on the smooth of his neck.

16 And she tied the skins of the kids on his arms, and on the bare parts of his neck. 16 And she tied the skins of the kids on his arms, and on the bare parts of his neck.

17 And she gave the savoury food and the bread, which she had prepared, into the hand of her son Jacōb.

17 And into the hands of Jacōb her son, she gave the food and the loaves which she had prepared. 17 And into the hands of Jacōb her son, she gave the food and the loaves which she had prepared.

18 And he came to his father, and said, “My father.” And he said, “Here am I; who are you, my son?”

δὲ εἶπεν, ἰδοὺ ἐγώ· τίς εἶ σύ, τέκνον;
δὲ εἶπε· ἰδοὺ ἐγώ· τίς εἶ σὺ τέκνον;
18 And he brought them to his father, and said, “Father.” And he said, “Yes I am; who are you, child?” 18 And he brought them to his father, and said, “Father.” And he said, “Yes I am; who are you, child?”

19 And Jacōb said to his father, “I am Esau your firstborn; I have done according as you asked me: arise, please, sit and eat of my venison, that your soul may bless me.”

19 And Jacōb said to his father, “I, Hēsau your first-born, have done as you told me; rise up, sit, and eat of my game, so that your soul may bless me.” 19 And Jacōb said to his father, “I, Hēsau your first-born, have done as you told me; rise up, sit, and eat of my game, so that your soul may bless me.”

20 And Isaac said to his son, “How is it that you have found it so quickly, my son”? And he said, “Because Yahweh your Elohim brought it to me.”

20 εἶπεν δὲ Ἰσαὰκ τῷ υἱῷ αὐτοῦ, τί τοῦτο, ταχὺ εὗρες, τέκνον;
20 εἶπε δὲ Ἰσαὰκ τῷ υἱῷ αὐτοῦ· τί τοῦτο, ὃν ταχὺ εὗρες, τέκνον;
20 And Isaac said to his son, “What is this which you have quickly found?” And he said, “That which the Lord your God presented before me.” 20 And Isaac said to his son, “What is this which you have quickly found?” And he said, “That which the Lord your God presented before me.”

21 And Isaac said to Jacōb, “Come near, please, that I may feel you, my son, whether you be my very son Esau or not.”

21 And Isaac said to Jacōb, “Approach me, and I will feel you, son, if you are my son Hēsau or not.” 21 And Isaac said to Jacōb, “Approach me, and I will feel you, son, if you are my son Hēsau or not.”

22 And Jacōb went near to Isaac his father; and he felt him, and said, “The voice is Jacōb’s voice, but the hands are the hands of Esau.”

22 And Jacōb approached his father Isaac, and he felt him, and said, “The voice is Jakōb’s voice, but the hands are Hēsau’s hands.” 22 And Jacōb approached his father Isaac, and he felt him, and said, “The voice is Jakōb’s voice, but the hands are Hēsau’s hands.”

23 And he didn’t discern him, because his hands were hairy, as his brother Esau’s hands; so he blessed him.

23 And he didn’t recognize him, for his hands were as the hands of his brother Hēsau, hairy; and he blessed him, 23 And he didn’t recognize him, for his hands were as the hands of his brother Hēsau, hairy; and he blessed him,

24 And he said, “Are you my very son Esau?” And he said, “I am.”

24 καὶ εἶπεν, σὺ εἶ υἱός μου Ἡσαῦ;
24 καὶ εἶπε· σὺ εἶ υἱός μου Ἡσαῦ;
24 and he said, “Are you my son Hēsau?” and he said, “I am.” 24 and he said, “Are you my son Hēsau?” and he said, “I am.”

25 And he said, “Bring it near to me, and I will eat of my son’s venison, that my soul may bless you.” And he brought it near to him, and he ate; and he brought him wine, and he drank.

25 And he said, “Bring it here, and I will eat from your game, child, in order that my soul may bless you.” And he brought it near to him, and he ate, and he brought him wine, and he drank. 25 And he said, “Bring it here, and I will eat from your game, child, in order that my soul may bless you.” And he brought it near to him, and he ate, and he brought him wine, and he drank.

26 And his father Isaac said to him, “Come near now, and kiss me, my son.”

26 And Isaac his father said to him, “Approach me, and kiss me, child.” 26 And Isaac his father said to him, “Approach me, and kiss me, child.”

27 And he came near, and kissed him; and he smelled the smell of his clothing, and blessed him, and said, “See, the smell of my son is as the smell of a field which Yahweh has blessed.

27 And he approached and kissed him, and smelled the odour of his clothes, and blessed him, and said, “Look! the odour of my son is as the odour of an abundant field, which the Lord has blessed. 27 And he approached and kissed him, and smelled the odour of his clothes, and blessed him, and said, “Look! the odour of my son is as the odour of an abundant field, which the Lord has blessed.

28 Therefore God give you of the dew of heaven, and the fatness of the earth, and plenty of grain and wine.

28 And may God give you from the dew of the sky, and from the fatness of the land, and abundance of grain and wine. 28 And may God give you from the dew of the sky, and from the fatness of the land, and abundance of grain and wine.

29 Let people serve you, and nations bow down to you: be lord over your brothers, and let your mother’s sons bow down to you: cursed be everyone who curses you, and blessed be he who blesses you.”

29 And let nations serve you, and rulers do obeisance to you, and become lord of your brother, and the sons of your father will do obeisance to you. Accursed is the one who curses you, but blessed is the one who blesses you.” 29 And let nations serve you, and rulers do obeisance to you, and become lord of your brother, and the sons of your father will do obeisance to you. Accursed is the one who curses you, but blessed is the one who blesses you.”

The Stolen Blessing

30 And it happened, as soon as Isaac had made an end of blessing Jacōb, and Jacōb was yet scarce gone out from the presence of Isaac his father, that Esau his brother came in from his hunting.

30 And it happened after Isaac had ceased blessing his son Jacōb, it happened, just when Jacōb had gone out from the presence of Isaac his father, that Hēsau his brother came in from his hunting. 30 And it happened after Isaac had ceased blessing his son Jacōb, it happened, just when Jacōb had gone out from the presence of Isaac his father, that Hēsau his brother came in from his hunting.

31 And he also had made savoury food, and brought it to his father, and said to his father, “Let my father arise, and eat of his son’s venison, that your soul may bless me.”

31 And he had made food and brought them to his father; and he said to his father, “Let my father arise and eat of his son’s venison, so that your soul may bless me.” 31 And he had made food and brought them to his father; and he said to his father, “Let my father arise and eat of his son’s venison, so that your soul may bless me.”

32 And Isaac his father said to him, “Who are you?” And he said, “I am your son, your firstborn Esau.”

32 καὶ εἶπεν αὐτῷ Ἰσαὰκ πατὴρ αὐτοῦ, τίς εἶ σύ;
32 καὶ εἶπε αὐτῷ Ἰσαὰκ πατὴρ αὐτοῦ· τίς εἶ σύ;
32 And Isaac his father said to him, “Who are you?” And he said, “I am your first-born son Hēsau.” 32 And Isaac his father said to him, “Who are you?” And he said, “I am your first-born son Hēsau.”

33 And Isaac trembled very exceedingly, and said, “Who? Where is he who has taken venison, and brought it me, and I have eaten of all before you came, and have blessed him? Yes, and he shall be blessed.”

33 ἐξέστη δὲ Ἰσαὰκ ἔκστασιν μεγάλην σφόδρα καὶ εἶπεν, τίς οὖν θηρεύσας μοι θήραν καὶ εἰσενέγκας μοι;
33 ἐξέστη δὲ Ἰσαὰκ ἔκστασιν μεγάλην σφόδρα καὶ εἶπε· τίς οὖν θηρεύσας μοι θήραν καὶ εἰσενέγκας μοι;
33 And Isaac was astonished with very great astonishment, and said, “Who then hunted game for me and brought it to me? And I have eaten from all before you came, and I blessed him, and let him be blessed.” 33 And Isaac was astonished with very great astonishment, and said, “Who then hunted game for me and brought it to me? And I have eaten from all before you came, and I blessed him, and let him be blessed.”

καὶ εἶπεν Ἡσαῦ τῷ πατρὶ αὐτοῦ, οὐχ ὑπελίπω μοι εὐλογίαν, πάτερ;

38 εἶπε δὲ Ἡσαῦ πρὸς τὸν πατέρα αὐτοῦ· μὴ εὐλογία μία σοὶ ἔστι, πάτερ;

42 And the words of Hēsau her older son were reported to Rhebekka, and she sent and called Jacōb her younger son, and said to him, “Look! 43 Now therefore, my son, obey my voice; and arise, flee to Laban my brother to Haran;

43 Now then, child, hear my voice, and rise and depart quickly into Mesopotamia to Laban my brother into Charran. 43 Now then, child, hear my voice, and rise and depart quickly into Mesopotamia to Laban my brother into Charran.

44 And stay with him a few days, until your brother’s fury turn away;

44 And dwell with him some days, until his wrath is turned 44 And dwell with him some days

45 Until your brother’s anger turn away from you, and he forget what you have done to him: then I will send, and fetch you from there: why should I be deprived also of you both in one day?”
