Isaac Settles in Gerar

1 And there was a famine in the land, beside the first famine that was in the days of Abraham. And Isaac went to Abimelech king of the Philistines to Gerar.

1 And there was a famine in the land, besides the former famine, which was in the time of Abraham. And Isaac went to Abimelech the king of the Phylistines in Gerara. 1 And there was a famine in the land, besides the former famine, which was in the time of Abraham. And Isaac went to Abimelech the king of the Phylistines in Gerara.

2 And Yahweh appeared to him, and said, “Don’t go down into Egypt; dwell in the land which I shall tell you of.

2 And the Lord appeared to him and said, “Don’t go down to Aigypt, but dwell in the land, which I tell to you.” 2 And the Lord appeared to him and said, “Don’t go down to Aigypt, but dwell in the land, which I tell to you.”

3 Reside in this land, and I will be with you, and will bless you; for to you, and to your seed, I will give all these countries, and I will perform the oath which I swore to Abraham your father.

3 And stay in this land; and I will be with you, and bless you, for I will give to you and to your offspring all this land; and I will establish my oath which I solemnly promised to your father Abraham. 3 And stay in this land; and I will be with you, and bless you, for I will give to you and to your offspring all this land; and I will establish my oath which I solemnly promised to your father Abraham.

4 And I will make your seed to multiply as the stars of heaven, and will give to your seed all these countries; and in your seed shall all the nations of the earth be blessed;

4 And I will multiply your offspring as the stars of the sky; and I will give to your offspring all this land, and all the nations of the land shall be blessed by your offspring. 4 And I will multiply your offspring as the stars of the sky; and I will give to your offspring all this land, and all the nations of the land shall be blessed by your offspring.

5 because Abraham obeyed my voice, and kept my charge, my commandments, my statutes, and my laws.”

5 Because Abraham your father obeyed my voice, and kept my injunctions, and my commandments, and my statutes, and my laws. 5 Because Abraham your father obeyed my voice, and kept my injunctions, and my commandments, and my statutes, and my laws.

6 And Isaac dwelt in Gerar.

6 And Isaac dwelt in Gerara. 6 And Isaac dwelt in Gerara.

7 And the men of the place asked him of his wife; and he said, “She is my sister”; for he feared to say, “She is my wife; lest,” said he, “the men of the place should kill me for Rebekah; because she was fair to look upon.”

7 And the men of the place asked concerning Rhebekka his wife, and he said, “She is my sister,” for he feared to say, “She is my wife,” lest the men of the place should slay him because of Rhebekka, because she appeared beautiful. 7 And the men of the place asked concerning Rhebekka his wife, and he said, “She is my sister,” for he feared to say, “She is my wife,” lest the men of the place should slay him because of Rhebekka, because she appeared beautiful.

8 And it happened, when he had been there a long time, that Abimelech king of the Philistines looked out at a window, and saw, and, behold, Isaac was sporting with Rebekah his wife.

8 And he remained there a long time, and Abimelech the king of Gerara looked down through the window, and saw Isaac flirting with Rhebekka his wife. 8 And he remained there a long time, and Abimelech the king of Gerara looked down through the window, and saw Isaac flirting with Rhebekka his wife.

9 And Abimelech called Isaac, and said, “Behold, of a surety she is your wife; and why did you say, ‘She is my sister’?” And Isaac said to him, “Because I said, ‘Lest I die for her.’ ”

9 ἐκάλεσεν δὲ Ἀβιμέλεχ τὸν Ἰσαὰκ καὶ εἶπεν αὐτῷ, ἄρα γε γυνή σου ἐστιν· τί ὅτι εἶπας, ἀδελφή μού ἐστιν;
9 ἐκάλεσε δὲ Ἀβιμέλεχ τὸν Ἰσαὰκ καὶ εἶπε αὐτῷ· ἆρά γε γυνή σου ἐστί;
τί ὅτι εἶπας, ἀδελφή μου ἐστίν;
9 And Abimelech called Isaac, and said to him, “Is she then your wife? Why did you say, She is my sister?” And Isaac said to him, “For I said, Lest I should die because of her.” 9 And Abimelech called Isaac, and said to him, “Is she then your wife? Why did you say, She is my sister?” And Isaac said to him, “For I said, Lest I should die because of her.”

10 And Abimelech said, “What is this you have done to us? One of the people might lightly have laid with your wife, and you should have brought guiltiness on us.”

10 εἶπεν δὲ αὐτῷ Ἀβιμέλεχ, τί τοῦτο ἐποίησας ἡμῖν;
10 εἶπε δὲ αὐτῷ Ἀβιμέλεχ· τί τοῦτο ἐποίησας ἡμῖν;
10 And Abimelech said to him, “Why have you done this to us? A little while one of my family was going to bed with your wife, and you would bring ignorance on us.” 10 And Abimelech said to him, “Why have you done this to us? A little while one of my family was going to bed with your wife, and you would bring ignorance on us.”

11 And Abimelech charged all his people, saying, “He who touches this man or his wife shall surely be put to death.”

11 And Abimelech ordered all his people, saying, “Anyone who touches this man and his wife shall be subject to death.” 11 And Abimelech ordered all his people, saying, “Anyone who touches this man and his wife shall be subject to death.”

12 Then Isaac sowed in that land, and received in the same year a hundedfold; and Yahweh blessed him.

12 And Isaac sowed in that land. In that year, he found a 100-fold barley; and the Lord blessed him. 12 And Isaac sowed in that land. In that year, he found a 100-fold barley; and the Lord blessed him.

13 And the man prospered greatly, and went forward, and grew until he became very great.

13 And the man was exalted, and kept getting greater until he became very great. 13 And the man was exalted, and kept getting greater until he became very great.

14 For he had possession of flocks, and possessions of herds, and great store of servants; and the Philistines envied him.

14 And he acquired cattle of sheep, and cattle of oxen, and much tilled lands, and the Phylistines envied him. 14 And he acquired cattle of sheep, and cattle of oxen, and much tilled lands, and the Phylistines envied him.

15 For all the wells which his father’s servants had dug in the days of Abraham his father, the Philistines had stopped them, and filled them with earth.

15 And the Phylistines blocked up all the wells which the servants of his father had dug in the time of his father, and filled them with dirt. 15 And the Phylistines blocked up all the wells which the servants of his father had dug in the time of his father, and filled them with dirt.

16 And Abimelech said to Isaac, “Go from us; for you are much mightier than we.”

16 And Abimelech said to Isaac, “Depart from us, because you are become much stronger than we.” 16 And Abimelech said to Isaac, “Depart from us, because you are become much stronger than we.”

17 And Isaac departed from there, and set up his tent in the valley of Gerar, and dwelt there.

17 And Isaac departed from there, and rested in the valley of Gerara, and dwelt there. 17 And Isaac departed from there, and rested in the valley of Gerara, and dwelt there.

Quarrel over the Wells

18 And Isaac dug again the wells of water, which they had dug in the days of Abraham his father; for the Philistines had stopped them after the death of Abraham; and he called their names after the names by which his father had called them.

18 Again Isaac dug the wells of water, which the servants of his father Abraham had dug, and which the Phylistines had blocked up, after the death of his father Abraham; and he gave them names, according to the names by which his father named them. 18 Again Isaac dug the wells of water, which the servants of his father Abraham had dug, and which the Phylistines had blocked up, after the death of his father Abraham; and he gave them names, according to the names by which his father named them.

19 And Isaac’s servants dug in the valley, and found there a well of springing water.

19 And Isaac’s servants dug in the valley of Gerara, and they found a well of fresh water there. 19 And Isaac’s servants dug in the valley of Gerara, and they found a well of fresh water there.

20 And the herdmen of Gerar quarreled with Isaac’s herdmen, saying, “The water is ours.” And he called the name of the well Esek; because they quarreled with him.

20 And the shepherds of Gerara quarreled with the Isaac’s shepherds, saying that the water was theirs; and they called the name of the well, Injury, for they injured him. 20 And the shepherds of Gerara quarreled with the Isaac’s shepherds, saying that the water was theirs; and they called the name of the well, Injury, for they injured him.

21 And they dug another well, and quarreled for that also; and he called its name Sitnah.

21 And after Isaac departed from there, he dug another well, and they disputed also concerning that; and he named its name, Enmity. 21 And after Isaac departed from there, he dug another well, and they disputed also concerning that; and he named its name, Enmity.

22 And he removed from there, and dug another well; and for that they didn’t quarrel; and he called its name Rehoboth; and he said, “For now Yahweh has made room for us, and we shall be fruitful in the land.”

22 And after he departed from there, he dug another well; and they didn’t quarrel about that; and he named its name, Room, saying, “Because now the Lord has made room for us, and has increased us on the land.” 22 And after he departed from there, he dug another well; and they didn’t quarrel about that; and he named its name, Room, saying, “Because now the Lord has made room for us, and has increased us on the land.”

23 And he went up from there to Beer-sheba.

23 And he went up from there to the well of the oath. 23 And he went up from there to the well of the oath.

24 And Yahweh appeared to him the same night, and said, “I am the God of Abraham your father: don’t fear, for I am with you, and will bless you, and multiply your seed for my servant Abraham’s sake.”

24 And the Lord appeared to him in that night, and said, “I am the God of Abraham your father; don’t fear, for I am with you, and I will bless you, and multiply your offspring because of Abraham your father.” 24 And the Lord appeared to him in that night, and said, “I am the God of Abraham your father; don’t fear, for I am with you, and I will bless you, and multiply your offspring because of Abraham your father.”

25 And he built an altar there, and called on the name of Yahweh and set up his tent there; and there Isaac’s servants dug a well.

25 And he built an altar there, and called on the name of the Lord, and he set up his tent there. Isaac’s servants dug a well there in the valley of Gerara. 25 And he built an altar there, and called on the name of the Lord, and he set up his tent there. Isaac’s servants dug a well there in the valley of Gerara.

Covenant with Abimelech

26 Then Abimelech went to him from Gerar, and Ahuzzath one of his friends, and Phichol the chief captain of his army.

26 And Abimelech went to him from Gerara, also Ochozath his groomsman, and Phikol the commander-in-chief of his army. 26 And Abimelech went to him from Gerara, also Ochozath his groomsman, and Phikol the commander-in-chief of his army.

27 And Isaac said to them, “Why come to me, seeing you hate me, and have sent me away from you?”

27 καὶ εἶπεν αὐτοῖς Ἰσαάκ, ἵνα τί ἤλθατε πρός με;
27 καὶ εἶπε αὐτοῖς Ἰσαάκ· ἵνα τί ἤλθετε πρός με;
27 And Isaac said to them, “Why did you come to me? You hated me, and sent me away from you.” 27 And Isaac said to them, “Why did you come to me? You hated me, and sent me away from you.”

28 And they said, “We saw certainly that Yahweh was with you; and we said, ‘Let there be now an oath between us, even between us and you, and let’s make a covenant with you;

28 And they said, “After looking, we have seen that the Lord was with you, and we said,” ‛Let there be an oath between us and between you, and we will make a treaty with you, 28 And they said, “After looking, we have seen that the Lord was with you, and we said,” ‛Let there be an oath between us and between you, and we will make a treaty with you,

29 that you will do us no hurt, as we haven’t touched you, and as we have done to you nothing but good, and have sent you away in peace: you are now the blessed of Yahweh.’ ”

29 not to do harm to us, and just as we didn’t loathe you, and as we treated you well and sent you away with peace. And now you are blessed of the Lord.’ 29 not to do harm to us, and just as we didn’t loathe you, and as we treated you well and sent you away with peace. And now you are blessed of the Lord.’

30 And he made them a feast, and they ate and drank.

30 And he made a feast for them, and they ate and drank. 30 And he made a feast for them, and they ate and drank.

31 And they rose up early in the morning, and swore one to another; and Isaac sent them away, and they departed from him in peace.

31 And in the morning, they arose and solemnly promised, one man to his neighbour; and Isaac sent them out, and they departed from him in safety. 31 And in the morning, they arose and solemnly promised, one man to his neighbour; and Isaac sent them out, and they departed from him in safety.

32 And it happened the same day, that Isaac’s servants came, and told him concerning the well which they had dug, and said to him, “We have found water.”
