Jacōb Moves to Bethel

1 And God said to Jacōb, “Arise, go up to Bethel, and dwell there; and make there an altar to God, that appeared to you when you fled from the face of Esau your brother.”

1 Now God said to Jacōb, “Arise, go up to the place Baithēl, and dwell there, and make an altar there to the God who appeared to you when you were running away from the presence of your brother Hēsau.” 1 Now God said to Jacōb, “Arise, go up to the place Baithēl, and dwell there, and make an altar there to the God who appeared to you when you were running away from the presence of your brother Hēsau.”

2 Then Jacōb said to his household, and to all that were with him, “Put away the strange gods that are among you, and be clean, and change your garments.

2 Then Jacōb said to his household and to all those who were with him, “Remove from your midst the foreign gods that are with you, and purify yourselves, and change your robes, 2 Then Jacōb said to his household and to all those who were with him, “Remove from your midst the foreign gods that are with you, and purify yourselves, and change your robes,

3 And let’s arise, and go up to Bethel; and I will make there an altar to God, who answered me in the day of my distress, and was with me in the way which I went.”

3 and after arising, let’s go up to Baithēl, and let’s make an altar there to the God who listened to me in a day of trouble, who was with me and preserved me on the road that I went.” 3 and after arising, let’s go up to Baithēl, and let’s make an altar there to the God who listened to me in a day of trouble, who was with me and preserved me on the road that I went.”

4 And they gave to Jacōb all the strange gods which were in their hand, and all their earrings which were in their ears; and Jacōb hid them under the oak which was by Shechem.

4 And they gave to Jacōb the foreign gods that were in their hands and the earrings in their ears, and Jacōb hid them under the terebinth in Sikima, and he destroyed them to the present day. 4 And they gave to Jacōb the foreign gods that were in their hands and the earrings in their ears, and Jacōb hid them under the terebinth in Sikima, and he destroyed them to the present day.

5 And they journeyed; and the terror of God was on the cities that were all around them, and they didn’t pursue after the sons of Jacōb.

5 And Israēl went out from Sikima, and the fear of God came on the cities all around them, and they didn’t pursue after the sons of Israēl. 5 And Israēl went out from Sikima, and the fear of God came on the cities all around them, and they didn’t pursue after the sons of Israēl.

6 So Jacōb came to Luz, which is in the land of Canaan, that is, Bethel, he and all the people who were with him.

6 Then Jacōb came to Louza, which is Baithēl, which is in Chanaan-land, he and all the people who were with him. 6 Then Jacōb came to Louza, which is Baithēl, which is in Chanaan-land, he and all the people who were with him.

7 And he built there an altar, and called the place El-beth-el: because there God appeared to him, when he fled from the face of his brother.

7 And there he built an altar and called the name of the place Baithēl, for there God was revealed to him when he was running away from the presence of his brother Hēsau. 7 And there he built an altar and called the name of the place Baithēl, for there God was revealed to him when he was running away from the presence of his brother Hēsau.

8 But Deborah, Rebekah’s nurse, died, and she was buried beneath Bethel under an oak; and its name was called Allon-bachuth.

8 Now Debbōra, Rhebekka’s wet-nurse, died under the oak tree below Baithēl, and he called its name Oak-tree-of-mourning. 8 Now Debbōra, Rhebekka’s wet-nurse, died under the oak tree below Baithēl, and he called its name Oak-tree-of-mourning.

9 And God appeared to Jacōb again, when he came out of Padan-aram, and blessed him.

10 And God said to him, “Your name is Jacōb: your name shall not be called any more Jacōb, but Israēl shall be your name”; and he called his name Israēl.

10 And God said to him, “Your name is Jacōb; no longer shall it be called Jacōb, but your name shall be Israēl.” 10 And God said to him, “Your name is Jacōb; no longer shall it be called Jacōb, but your name shall be Israēl.”

11 And God said to him, “I am God Almighty: be fruitful and multiply; a nation and a company of nations shall be of you, and kings shall come out of your loins;

11 And God said to him, “I am your God: increase, and multiply; nations and gatherings of nations shall be from you, and kings shall come from your loins. 11 And God said to him, “I am your God: increase, and multiply; nations and gatherings of nations shall be from you, and kings shall come from your loins.

12 And the land which I gave Abraham and Isaac, to you I will give it, and to your seed after you will I give the land.”

12 And the land that I have given to Abraham and Isaac, I have given it to you; it shall be yours, and I will give this land to your offspring after you.” 12 And the land that I have given to Abraham and Isaac, I have given it to you; it shall be yours, and I will give this land to your offspring after you.”

13 And God went up from him in the place where he talked with him.

13 Then God went up from him out of the place where he spoke with him. 13 Then God went up from him out of the place where he spoke with him.

15 And Jacōb called the name of the place where God spoke with him, Bethel.

16 And they journeyed from Bethel; and there was but a little way to come to Ephrath; and Rachel travailed, and she had hard labour.

17 And it happened while she was giving birth with difficulty that the midwife said to her, “Have courage, for this one is also a son for you.” 17 And it happened while she was giving birth with difficulty that the midwife said to her, “Have courage, for this one is also a son for you.”

18 And it happened, as her soul was in departing, (for she died) that she called his name Ben-oni; but his father called him Benjamin.
