Jacōb’s Sons and Dinah
1 And Dinah, the daughter of Leah, whom she gave birth to Jacōb, went out to see the daughters of the land.
1 Now Dina the daughter of Leia, whom she gave birth to Jacōb, went out to observe the daughters of the inhabitants. | 1 Now Deina the daughter of Leia, whom she gave birth to Jacōb, went out to observe the daughters of the inhabitants. |
2 And when Shechem the son of Hamor the Hivite, prince of the country, saw her, he took her, and lay with her, and defiled her.
2 And Sychem the son of Hemmōr the Evite, the ruler of the land, saw her, and seizing her he lay with her and humbled her. | 2 And Sychem the son of Emmōr the Evite, the ruler of the land, saw her, and seizing her he lay with her and humbled her. |
3 And his soul clung to Dinah the daughter of Jacōb, and he loved the damsel, and spoke kindly to the damsel.
3 And he paid attention to the soul of Dina the daughter of Jacōb, and he loved the young woman and spoke with her according to the young woman’s mind | 3 And he paid attention to the soul of Deina the daughter of Jacōb, and he loved the young woman and spoke with her according to the young woman’s mind |
4 And Shechem spoke to his father Hamor, saying, “Get me this damsel to wife.”
4 And Sychem spoke to his father Hemmōr, saying, “Get me this girl for a wife.” | 4 Sychem spoke to his father Emmōr, saying, “Get me this one for a wife.” |
5 And Jacōb heard that he had defiled Dinah his daughter: now his sons were with his cattle in the field; and Jacōb held his peace until they were come.

5 Now Jacōb heard that the son of Hemmōr had defiled his daughter Dina, but his sons were with his livestock in the plain, and Jacōb kept silent until they came. | 5 Now Jacōb heard that the son of Emmōr had defiled his daughter Deina, but his sons were with his livestock in the plain, and Jacōb kept silent until they came. |
6 And Hamor the father of Shechem went out to Jacōb to commune with him.
6 And Hemmōr the father of Sychem went out to Jacōb to speak with him. | 6 And Emmōr the father of Sychem went out to Jacōb to speak with him. |
7 And the sons of Jacōb came out of the field when they heard it; and the men were grieved, and they were very wroth, because he had wrought folly in Israēl in lying with Jacōb’s daughter; which thing anything not to be done.
7 And the sons of Jacōb came out from the plain. And when they heard, the men were greatly vexed, and it was very distressing to them because he did an indecent act in Israēl by lying with Jakōb’s daughter, and it shall not be thus. | 7 And the sons of Jacōb came out from the plain. And when they heard, the men were greatly vexed, and it was very distressing to them because he did an indecent act in Israēl by lying with Jakōb’s daughter, and it shall not be thus. |
8 And Hamor communed with them, saying, “The soul of my son Shechem longs for your daughter: please give her to him to wife.
8 And Hemmōr spoke with them, saying, “My son Sychem has chosen your daughter with his soul; therefore give her to him as a wife. | 8 And Emmōr spoke with them, saying, “My son Sychem has chosen your daughter with his soul; therefore give her to him as a wife. |
9 And make marriages with us, and give your daughters to us, and take our daughters to you.
9 Intermarry with us. Give your daughters to us, and take our daughters for your sons. | 9 Intermarry with us. Give your daughters to us, and take our daughters for your sons. |
10 And you shall dwell with us; and the land shall be before you; dwell and trade you in it, and get possessions in it.”
10 And settle with us. And look, the land is broad before you; settle, and conduct business in it, and acquire property in it.” | 10 And settle with us. And look, the land is broad before you; settle, and conduct business in it, and acquire property in it.” |
11 And Shechem said to her father and to her brothers, “Let me find grace in your eyes, and what you shall say to me I will give.
11 Then Sychem said to her father and to her brothers, “May I find favour before you, and whatever you say, we will give. | 11 Then Sychem said to her father and to her brothers, “May I find favour before you, and whatever you say, we will give. |
12 Ask me ever so much dowry and gift, and I will give according as you shall say to me; but give me the damsel to wife.”
12 Greatly increase the dowry, and I will give it, whatever you tell me, then you shall give me this one for a wife.” | 12 Greatly increase the dowry, and I will give it, whatever you tell me, then you shall give me this one for a wife.” |
13 And the sons of Jacōb answered Shechem and Hamor his father craftily, and said, because he had defiled Dinah their sister.
13 But the sons of Jacōb answered Sychem and his father Hemmōr with deceit and spoke with them, because they had defiled their sister Dina, | 13 But the sons of Jacōb answered Sychem and his father Emmōr with deceit and spoke with them, because they had defiled their sister Deina, |
14 And they said to them, “We cannot do this thing, to give our sister to one who is uncircumcised; for that were a reproach to us.
14 and Symeōn and Levi, Dina’s brothers, Leia’s sons, said to them, “We will not be able to do this thing, to give our sister to a man who has a foreskin, for it is a disgrace for us | 14 and Symeōn and Levi, Deina’s brothers, said to them, “We will not be able to do this thing, to give our sister to a man who has a foreskin, for it is a disgrace for us |
15 But in this will we consent to you: If you will be as we be, that every male of you be circumcised;
15 In this one thing we will consent to you and settle with you: if you will become like us and you and every male of yours has been circumcised, | 15 In this one thing we will consent to you and settle with you: if you will become like us and you and every male of yours has been circumcised, |
16 Then will we give our daughters to you, and we will take your daughters to us, and we will dwell with you, and we will become one people.
16 and we will give our daughters to you, and we will take some of your daughters as wives for us, and we will live beside you, and we will be as one family. | 16 and we will give our daughters to you, and we will take some of your daughters as wives for us, and we will live beside you, and we will be as one family. |
17 But if you won’t listen to us, to be circumcised; then will we take our daughter, and we will be gone.”
17 But if you don’t listen to us to be circumcised, we will take our daughters and depart.” | 17 But if you don’t listen to us to be circumcised, we will take our daughters and depart.” |
18 And their words pleased Hamor, and Shechem Hamor’s son.
18 And the words were pleasing before Hemmōr and before Sychem, the son of Hemmōr. | 18 And the words were pleasing before Emmōr and before Sychem, the son of Emmōr. |
19 And the young man deferred not to do the thing, because he had delight in Jacōb’s daughter; and he was more honourable than all the house of his father.
19 And the young man didn’t delay to do this this, for he was devoted to Jakōb’s daughter. Now he was the most honoured of all those in his father’s house. | 19 And the young man didn’t delay to do this this, for he was devoted to Jakōb’s daughter. Now he was the most honoured of all those in his father’s house. |
20 And Hamor and Shechem his son came to the gate of their city, and communed with the men of their city, saying,
20 So then Hemmōr and his son Sychem came to the gate of their city and spoke to the men of their city, saying, | 20 So then Emmōr and his son Sychem came to the gate of their city and spoke to the men of their city, saying, |
21 “These men are peaceable with us; therefore let them dwell in the land, and trade in it; for the land, behold, it is large enough for them; let’s take their daughters to us for wives, and let’s give them our daughters.

24 And to Hamor and to Shechem his son listened all that went out of the gate of his city; and every male was circumcised, all that went out of the gate of his city.
24 And all those going out the gate of their city listened to Hemmōr and his son Sychem, and they circumcised the flesh of their foreskin, every male. | 24 And all those going out the gate of their city listened to Emmōr and his son Sychem, and they circumcised the flesh of their foreskin, every male. |
25 And it happened on the third day, when they were sore, that two of the sons of Jacōb, Simeon and Levi, Dinah’s brothers, took each man his sword, and came on the city boldly, and killed all the males.

26 And they killed Hamor and Shechem his son with the edge of the sword, and took Dinah out of Shechem’s house, and went out.

27 The sons of Jacōb came on the slain, and spoiled the city, because they had defiled their sister.
27 Then the sons of Jacōb came on the wounded and plundered the city in which they had defiled their sister Dina, | 27 Then the sons of Jacōb came on the wounded and plundered the city in which they had defiled their sister Deina, |
28 They took their sheep, and their oxen, and their donkeys, and what was in the city, and what was in the field,
28 and they took their sheep and their cattle and their donkeys, both as many as were in the city and as many as were in the plain. | 28 and they took their sheep and their cattle and their donkeys, both as many as were in the city and as many as were in the plain. |
29 And all their wealth, and all their little ones, and their wives took they captive, and spoiled even all that was in the house.
29 And they captured all their slaves and their wives, and they plundered as many things as were in the city and as many things as were in the homes. | 29 And they captured all their slaves and their wives, and they plundered as many things as were in the city and as many things as were in the homes. |
30 And Jacōb said to Simeon and Levi, “You have troubled me to make me to stink among the inhabitants of the land, among the Canaanites and the Perizzites: because I am few in number, they shall gather themselves together against me, and slay me; and I shall be destroyed, I and my house.”
30 Then Jacōb said to Symeōn and Levi, “You have made me hateful so that I am evil to all those inhabiting the land, both among the Chananites and the Pherezites. But I, I am few in number. And when they gather together against me, will chop me up, and I shall be wiped out, I and my household.” | 30 Then Jacōb said to Symeōn and Levi, “You have made me hateful so that I am evil to all those inhabiting the land, both among the Chananites and the Pherezites.
