1 In the third year of the reign of Jehoiakim king of Judah came Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylōn to Jerusalem, and besieged it.
1 During the third year of King Jōakim of Judea, when Nabouchodonosor, king of Babylōn arrived at Jerusalem, he besieged it | 1 In the third year of the reign of Jōakim king of Juda, came Nabouchodonosor king of Babylōn to Jerusalem, and besieged it. |
2 And the Lord gave Jehoiakim king of Judah into his hand, with part of the vessels of the house of God: which he carried into the land of Shinar to the house of his god; and he brought the vessels into the treasure house of his god.
2 And the Lord delivered it into his hands including Jōakim, king of Judea and some of the sacred vessels of the Lord. And after taking them to Babylōn, he deposited them in his idol’s temple. | 2 And the Lord gave into his hand Jōakim king of Juda, and part of the vessels of the house of God; and he brought them into the land of Sennaar to the house of his god; and he brought the vessels into the treasure-house of his god. |
3 And the king spoke to Ashpenaz the master of his eunuchs, that he should bring certain of the sons of Israēl, and of the king’s seed, and of the princes;
3 And the king told Abiesdri, his own chief eunuch, to bring some of the sons of the nobles of Israēl and out of the royal line and out of the chosen ones. | 3 And the king told Asphanez his chief eunuch, to bring in some of the captive sons of Israēl, and of the seed of the kingdom, and of the princes; |
4 Children in whom was no blemish, but well favoured, and skilful in all wisdom, and cunning in knowledge, and understanding science, and such as had ability in them to stand in the king’s palace, and whom they might teach the learning and the tongue of the Chaldeans.
4 young men, unblemished and handsome and expert all wisdom and education and wise and strong in order to be in the house of the king and to teach them Chaldean writing and language. | 4 young men in whom was no blemish, and beautiful in appearance, and skilled in all wisdom, and possessing knowledge, and acquainted with prudence, and who had ability to stand in the house before the king, and the king gave commandment to teach them the learning and language of the Chaldeans. |
5 And the king appointed them a daily provision of the king’s food, and of the wine which he drank; so nourishing them three years, that at the end of it they might stand before the king.
5 and that they be given a designated portion from the king each day, both from the royal table and of the wine which the king drank; also to educate them for three years and to stand some of them before the king. | 5 And the king appointed them a daily portion from the king᾿s table, and from the wine which he drank; and gave orders to nourish them three years, and that afterwards they should stand before the king. |
6 Now among these were of the children of Judah, Daniēl, Hananiah, Mishael, and Azariah.
6 And from out of the nation of the sons of Israēl who were from Judea: Daniēl, Hananiah, Mishael, Azariah. | 6 Now these were among them of the children of Juda, Daniēl, and Ananias, and Azarias, and Misael. |
7 Unto whom the prince of the eunuchs gave names; for he gave to Daniēl the name of Belteshazzar; and to Hananiah, of Shadrach; and to Mishael, of Meshach; and to Azariah, of Abed-nego.
7 And the chief eunuch assigned them names: to Daniēl, Baltasar; but to Hananiah, Sedrach and to Mishael, Misach and to Azariah, Abdenago. | 7 And the chief of the eunuchs gave them names: to Daniēl, Baltasar; and to Ananias, Sedrach; and to Misael, Misach; and to Azarias, Abdenago. |
8 But Daniēl purposed in his heart that he would not defile himself with the portion of the king’s food, nor with the wine which he drank; therefore he requested of the prince of the eunuchs that he might not defile himself.
8 And Daniēl was determined in his heart that he would not be polluted with the king’s dinner and the wine that he drank, and he petitioned the chief eunuch so that he not be contaminated. | 8 And Daniēl purposed in his heart, that he would not defile himself with the king᾿s table, nor with the wine of his drink; and he entreated the chief of the eunuchs that he might not defile himself. |
9 Now God had brought Daniēl into favour and tender love with the prince of the eunuchs.
9 And the Lord gave Daniel honor and favor before the chief eunuch. | 9 Now God had brought Daniēl into favour and mercy with the chief of the eunuchs. |
10 And the prince of the eunuchs said to Daniēl, I fear my lord the king, who has appointed your food and your drink; for why should he see your faces worse liking than the children which are of your sort? Then you shall make me endanger my head to the king.
10 And the chief eunuch said to Daniel, “I am distressed because of my lord the king who appointed your food and drink that he should not see your face more drawn and sickly than the young men from aliens with whom you are being reared; I will risk my own neck!” | 10 And the chief of the eunuchs said to Daniēl, I fear my lord the king, who has appointed your meat and your drink, lest he see your countenances gloomy in comparison of the young men your equals; also you shall endanger my head to the king. |
11 Then said Daniēl to Melzar, whom the prince of the eunuchs had set over Daniēl, Hananiah, Mishael, and Azariah,
11 And Daniel said to Abiesdri, the chief eunuch, who was assigned to Daniel, Hananias, Misael, Azarias. | 11 And Daniēl said to Amelsad, whom the chief of the eunuchs had appointed over Daniēl, Ananias, Misael, and Azarias. |
12 Prove your servants, I beseech you, ten days; and let them give us pulse to eat, and water to drink.
12 “Do test your servants over a period of ten days, and let us be given some pulse from the earth to gulp down and water to drink. | 12 Prove now your servants ten days; and let them give us pulse, and let’s eat, and let’s drink water. |
13 Then let our countenances be looked on before you, and the countenance of the children that eat of the portion of the king’s food; and as you see, deal with your servants.
13 And if our appearance seems more pale than the other young men who are eating of the royal dinner, as you observe so deal with your servants.” | 13 And let our countenances be seen by you, and the countenances of the children that eat at the king᾿s table; and deal with your servants according as you shall see. |
14 So he consented to them in this matter, and proved them ten days.
14 And he dealt with them in this manner and tested them for ten days. | 14 And he listened to them, and proved them ten days. |
15 And at the end of ten days their countenances appeared fairer and fatter in flesh than all the children which ate the portion of the king’s food.
15 Now, after ten days their appearance and physical condition was shown to be better than that of the other young men who were eating the royal dinner. | 15 And at the end of the ten days their countenances appeared fairer and stouter in flesh, than the children that fed at the king᾿s table. |
16 Thus Melzar took away the portion of their food, and the wine that they should drink; and gave them pulse.
16 And Abiesdri continued to withhold their dinner and their wine and would give them some pulse instead. | 16 So Amelsad took away their supper and the wine of their drink, and gave them pulse. |
17 As for these four children, God gave them knowledge and skill in all learning and wisdom; and Daniēl had understanding in all visions and dreams.
17 And the Lord gave the young men knowledge and clever insight in every literary art. And to Daniel he gave insight into every vision and dreams and in all wisdom. | 17 And as for these four children, God gave them understanding and prudence in all learning and wisdom; and Daniēl had understanding in all visions and dreams. |
18 Now at the end of the days that the king had said he should bring them in, then the prince of the eunuchs brought them in before Nebuchadnezzar.
18 Then after these days, the king ordered them to be brought in, and they were led by the chief eunuch to Nabouchodonosor the king. | 18 And at the end of the days, after which the king had given orders to bring them in, then the chief of the eunuchs brought them in before Nabouchodonosor. |
19 And the king communed with them; and among them all was found none like Daniēl, Hananiah, Mishael, and Azariah; therefore stood they before the king.
19 And the king conversed with them, and no one was found among the wise like Daniēl and Hananias and Misael and Azarias, and they were in the king’s presence. | 19 And the king spoke with them; and there were not found out of them all any like Daniēl, and Ananias and Misael, and Azarias; and they stood before the king. |
20 And in all matters of wisdom and understanding, that the king inquired of them, he found them ten times better than all the magicians and astrologers that were in all his realm.
20 And in every topic and understanding and education, which the king inquired of them, he took them to be ten times wiser, surpassing the savants and scholars that were in the whole kingdom. And the king glorified them and appointed them in affairs in his whole kingdom. | 20 And in every matter of wisdom and knowledge in which the king questioned them, he found them ten times wiser than all the enchanters and sorcerers that were in all his kingdom. |
21 And Daniēl continued even to the first year of king Cyrus.
21 And Daniēl lasted until the first year of the reign of Cyrus. | 21 And Daniēl continued till the first year of king Cyrus. |
