topDaniel ch 2

Chapter 2

Old Greek Theodotion

1  And in the second year of the reign of Nebuchadnezzar Nebuchadnezzar dreamed dreams, with which his spirit was troubled, and his sleep broke from him.

1 And in the twelfth year of Nabouchodonosor’s reign, it happened that visions and dreams befell him, and he was disturbed in his sleep. 1 In the second year of his reign Nabouchodonosor dreamed a dream, and his spirit was amazed, and his sleep departed from him.

2  Then the king commanded to call the magicians, and the astrologers, and the sorcerers, and the Chaldeans, for to show the king his dreams. So they came and stood before the king.

2 And the king ordered that the enchanters and the magicians and sorcerers of the Chaldeans be brought in to tell the king his dreams. And when they arrived, they stood in front of the king. 2 And the king gave orders to call the enchanters, and the magicians, and the sorcerers, and the Chaldeans, to declare to the king his dreams. And they came and stood before the king.

3  And the king said to them, I have dreamed a dream, and my spirit was troubled to know the dream.

3 And the king said to them, “I have seen a dream, and my spirit was shaken. Therefore, I want to find out about the dream.” 3 And the king said to them, I have dreamed, and my spirit was troubled to know the dream.

4  Then spoke the Chaldeans to the king in Syriack, Oh king, live forever: tell your servants the dream, and we will show the interpretation.

4 And the Chaldeans spoke to the king in Syrian, “O lord, you shall live forever! Tell the dream to your servants, and we will explain it.” 4 And the Chaldeans spoke to the king in the Syrian language, saying, Oh king, live forever: do you tell the dream to your servants, and we will declare the interpretation.

5  The king answered and said to the Chaldeans, The thing is gone from me: if you won’t make known to me the dream, with the interpretation of it, you shall be cut in pieces, and your houses shall be made a dunghill.

5 Then the king said in reply to the Chaldeans, “Unless you tell me the dream with certainty and disclose its sense, you will be made an example, and your possessions will be expropriated into the royal treasury. 5 The king answered the Chaldeans, The thing has departed from me: if you don’t make known to me the dream and the interpretation, you shall be destroyed, and your houses shall be spoiled.

6  But if you show the dream, and the interpretation of it, you shall receive of me gifts and rewards and great honour; therefore show me the dream, and the interpretation of it.

6 But if you make plain to me the dream and tell its sense, you will receive all kinds of gifts, and you will be glorified by me. Therefore, disclose the dream, and interpret.” 6 But if you make known to me the dream, and the interpretation of it, you shall receive of me gifts and presents and much honour: only tell me the dream, and the interpretation of it.

7  They answered again and said, Let the king tell his servants the dream, and we will show the interpretation of it.

7 Then they answered a second time, saying, “O king, state the vision, so your servants will interpret regarding these matters.” 7 They answered the second time, and said, Let the king tell the dream to his servants, and we will declare the interpretation.

8  The king answered and said, I know of certainty that you would gain the time, because you see the thing is gone from me.

8 And the king said to them, “It is certain you are trying to buy time; therefore, as I have commanded. 8 And the king answered and said, I verily know that you are trying to gain time, because you see that the thing has gone from me.

9  But if you won’t make known to me the dream, there is but one decree for you; for you have prepared lying and corrupt words to speak before me, till the time be changed; therefore tell me the dream, and I shall know that you can show me the interpretation of it.

9 unless you render to me the dream and disclose its meaning, you will meet up with death. For you have agreed to make lying words in my presence until the occasion changes. Now, therefore, if you state the vision, which I saw during the night, I shall know that you can also disclose its sense.” 9 If then you don’t tell me the dream, I know that you have concerted to utter before me a false and corrupt tale, until the time shall have past: tell me my dream, and I shall know that you will also declare to me the interpretation of it.

10  The Chaldeans answered before the king, and said, There is not a man on the earth that can show the king’s matter; therefore there is no king, lord, nor ruler, that asked such things at any magician, or astrologer, or Chaldean.

10 And the Chaldeans answered in the presence of the king, “Nobody on earth can say to the king what he has seen as you are asking! And, no king or dynast has asked such a matter of any sage or magician or Chaldean. 10 The Chaldeans answered before the king, and said, There is no man on the earth, who shall be able to make known the king᾿s matter: since no great king or ruler asks such a question of an enchanter, magician, or Chaldean.

11  And it is a rare thing that the king requires, and there is none other that can show it before the king, except the gods, whose dwelling is not with flesh.

11 And the thing that you seek, O king, is difficult and important. And there is no one who can disclose these things except some angel, whose habitation is not with any flesh; therefore, it is not possible that it happen, as you imagine.” 11 For the question which the king asks is difficult, and there is no one else who shall answer it before the king, but the gods, whose dwelling is not with any flesh.

12  For this cause the king was angry and very furious, and commanded to destroy all the wise men of Babylōn.

12 Then the king, being anxious and very sad, ordered to bring forth all the savants of Babylōnia. 12 Then the king in rage and anger commanded to destroy all the wise men of Babylōn.

13  And the decree went forth that the wise men should be slain; and they sought Daniēl and his fellows to be slain.

13 And it was decreed to execute all of them, but Daniēl and all those who were with him were sought in order to be killed as well. 13 So the decree went forth, and they began to slay the wise men; and they sought Daniēl and his fellows to slay them.

14  Then Daniēl answered with counsel and wisdom to Arioch the captain of the king’s guard, which was gone forth to slay the wise men of Babylōn.

14 Then Daniēl spoke counsel and knowledge to Arioch, the king’s chief cook, who was ordered to bring forward the savants of Babylōnia. 14 Then Daniēl answered with counsel and prudence to Arioch the captain of the royal guard, who was gone forth to kill the wise men of Babylōn; saying,

15  He answered and said to Arioch the king’s captain, Why is the decree so hasty from the king? Then Arioch made the thing known to Daniēl.

15 καὶ ἐπυνθάνετο αὐτοῦ λέγων περὶ τίνος δογματίζεται πικρῶς παρὰ τοῦ βασιλέως;
15 ἄρχων τοῦ βασιλέως, περὶ τίνος ἐξῆλθεν γνώμη ἀναιδὴς ἐκ προσώπου τοῦ βασιλέως;
15 And he inquired of him, saying, “Why is it being decreed so harshly by the king?” Then Arioch made the ordinance clear to Daniēl. 15 Chief magistrate of the king, why has the preemptory command proceeded from the king? So Arioch made known the matter to Daniēl.

16  Then Daniēl went in, and desired of the king that he would give him time, and that he would show the king the interpretation.

16 Now Daniēl immediately went in to the king and petitioned that time might be given to him, and he would disclose everything in the presence of the king. 16 And Daniēl entreated the king to give him time, and that he might thus declare to the king the interpretation of it.

17  Then Daniēl went to his house, and made the thing known to Hananiah, Mishael, and Azariah, his companions.

17 Then Daniēl, departing to his own home, declared everything in detail to Hananias and Misael and Azarias, his companions. 17 So Daniēl went into his house, and made known the matter to Ananias, and Misael, and Azarias, his friends.

18  That they would desire mercies of the God of heaven concerning this secret; that Daniēl and his fellows should not perish with the rest of the wise men of Babylōn.

18 And he proclaimed a fast and supplication and that help be sought from the Lord Most High about this mystery so that Daniēl and those who were with him might not be delivered to destruction together with the savants of Babylōn. 18 And they sought mercies from the God of heaven concerning this mystery; that Daniēl and his friends might not perish with the rest of the wise men of Babylōn.

19  Then was the secret revealed to Daniēl in a night vision. Then Daniēl blessed the God of heaven.

19 Then the mystery of the king was disclosed to Daniēl. In the night in a vision the matter was clearly brought to light. Then Daniēl blessed the Lord Most High and crying out he said, 19 Then the mystery was revealed to Daniēl in a vision of the night; and Daniēl blessed the God of heaven, and said,

20  Daniēl answered and said, Blessed be the name of God forever and ever; for wisdom and might are his.

20 “Let the name of the great Lord be blessed forever, because wisdom and majesty are his. 20 May the name of God be blessed from everlasting and to everlasting; for wisdom and understanding are his.

21  And he changes the times and the seasons: he removes kings, and sets up kings: he gives wisdom to the wise, and knowledge to those who know understanding.

21 And he changes seasons and times, deposing kings and setting up, giving to the sages wisdom and understanding to those who have knowledge 21 And he changes times and seasons: he appoints kings, and removes them, giving wisdom to the wise, and prudence to those who have understanding.

22  He reveals the deep and secret things: he knows what is in the darkness, and the light dwells with him.

22 and revealing deep and obscure things and knowing what is in the darkness and in the light, and with him there is release. 22 he reveals deep and secret matters; knowing what is in darkness, and the light is with him.

23  I thank you, and praise you, Oh you God of my fathers, who have given me wisdom and might, and have made known to me now what we desired of you; for you have now made known to us the king’s matter.

23 You, Lord of my ancestors, I acknowledge and praise, because you gave me wisdom and intelligence, and now you have shown as much as I petitioned in order to disclose regarding these things to the king.” 23 I give thanks to you, and praise you, Oh God of my fathers, for you have given me wisdom and power, and has made known to me the things which we asked of you; and you have made known to me the king᾿s vision.

24  Therefore Daniēl went in to Arioch, whom the king had ordained to destroy the wise men of Babylōn: he went and said thus to him; Don’t destroy the wise men of Babylōn: bring me in before the king, and I will show to the king the interpretation.

24 So when Daniēl went in to Arioch, who had been appointed by the king to execute all the savants of Babylōnia, he said to him, “Do not destroy the savants of Babylōn, but bring me in to the king, and I will disclose everything in detail to the king.” 24 And Daniēl came to Arioch, whom the king had appointed to destroy the wise men of Babylōn, and said to him; Don’t destroy the wise men of Babylōn, but bring me in before the king, and I will declare the interpretation to the king.

25  Then Arioch brought in Daniēl before the king in haste and said thus to him, I have found a man of the captives of Judah, that will make known to the king the interpretation.

25 Then Arioch quickly brought Daniēl in to the king and said to him: “I have found a wise person among the captives of the sons of Judea who will disclose everything in detail to the king.” 25 Then Arioch in haste brought in Daniēl before the king, and said to him, I have found a man of the children of the captivity of Judea, who will declare the interpretation to the king.

26  The king answered and said to Daniēl, whose name was Belteshazzar, Are you able to make known to me the dream which I have seen, and the interpretation of it?

26 ἀποκριθεὶς δὲ βασιλεὺς εἶπε τῷ Δανιὴλ ἐπικαλουμένῳ δὲ Χαλδαϊστὶ Βαλτασὰρ δυνήσῃ δηλῶσαί μοι τὸ ὅραμα, εἶδον καὶ τὴν τούτου σύγκρισιν; 26 καὶ ἀπεκρίθη βασιλεύς, καὶ εἶπεν τῷ Δανιήλ, οὗ τὸ ὄνομα Βαλτασάρ, εἰ δύνασαί μοι ἀναγγεῖλαι τὸ ἐνύπνιον εἶδον, καὶ τὴν σύγκρισιν αὐτοῦ;
26 So having answered, the king said to Daniēl, but called Baltasar in Chaldean, “Are you able to disclose to me the vision that I have seen and its sense?” 26 And the king answered and said to Daniēl, whose name was Baltasar, Can you declare to me the dream which I saw, and the interpretation of it?

27  Daniēl answered in the presence of the king, and said, The secret which the king has demanded cannot the wise men, the astrologers, the magicians, the soothsayers, show to the king;

27 So Daniēl spoke aloud in the presence of the king and said, “That which the king has seen: the explanation is not of the sages and enchanters and sorcerers and Gazarenes, 27 And Daniēl answered before the king, and said, The mystery which the king asks the explanation of is not in the power of the wise men, magicians, enchanters, or soothsayers to declare to the king.

28  But there is a God in heaven that reveals secrets, and makes known to the king Nebuchadnezzar what shall be in the latter days. Your dream, and the visions of your head on your bed, are these;

28 but there is a Lord in heaven illumining mysteries who has disclosed to King Nabouchodonosor what must happen at the end of days. O King, you shall live forever! The dream and the vision of your head on your bed is this. 28 But there is a God in heaven revealing mysteries, and he has made known to king Nabouchodonosor what things must come to pass in the last days. Your dream, and the visions of your head on your bed, are as follows,

29  As for you, Oh king, your thoughts came into your mind on your bed, what should come to pass hereafter; and he who reveals secrets makes known to you what shall come to pass.

29 You, O king, after you reclined on your couch, saw everything that must happen at the end of the days, and he that reveals mysteries has disclosed to you what is about to happen. 29 Oh king: your thoughts on your bed arose as to what must come to pass hereafter; and he who reveals mysteries has made known to you what must come to pass.

30  But as for me, this secret is not revealed to me for any wisdom that I have more than any living, but for their sakes that shall make known the interpretation to the king, and that you might know the thoughts of your heart.

30 But as for me, this mystery was not brought to light because of wisdom that I have beyond all persons, but it was shown to me what you pondered in your heart by knowledge in order that it might be disclosed to the king. 30 Moreover, this mystery hasn’t been revealed to me by reason of wisdom which is in me beyond all others living, but for the sake of making known the interpretation to the king, that you might know the thoughts of your heart.

31  You, Oh king, saw, and behold a great image. This great image, whose brightness was excellent, stood before you; and the form of it was terrible.

31 “And you saw, O king. And lo! There was one image. And that image was exceedingly great. And its appearance, being extraordinary, stood in front of you, and the appearance of the image was frightening. 31 You, Oh king, saw, and behold an image: that image was great, and the appearance of it excellent, standing before your face; and the form of it was terrible.

32  This image’s head was of fine gold, his breast and his arms of silver, his belly and his thighs of bronze,

32 And the head was of good gold, the chest and the arms silver, the belly and the thighs bronze, 32 It was an image, the head of which was of fine gold, its hands and breast and arms of silver, its belly and thighs of copper-alloy,

33  His legs of iron, his feet part of iron and part of clay.

33 and the legs iron, the feet partly of iron and partly of earthenware. 33 its legs of iron, its feet, part of iron and part of earthenware.

34  You saw till that a stone was cut out without hands, which smote the image on his feet that were of iron and clay, and broke them to pieces.

34 And you saw until when a stone was cut from a mountain, without hands, and it struck the image on the iron and earthenware feet and crushed them. 34 You saw until a stone was cut out of a mountain without hands, and it smote the image on its feet of iron and earthenware, and utterly reduced them to powder.

35  Then was the iron, the clay, the bronze, the silver, and the gold, broken to pieces together, and became like the chaff of the summer threshing-floors; and the wind carried them away, that no place was found for them; and the stone that smote the image became a great mountain, and filled the whole earth.

35 Then the iron as well as the earthenware and the bronze and the silver and the gold became powdery together and became more powdery, as it were, than the chaff on a threshing floor, and the wind threw them so that nothing remained of them. And the stone that struck the image became a great mountain, and it struck the whole earth. 35 Then once for all the earthenware, the iron, the copper-alloy, the silver, the gold, were ground to powder, and became as chaff from the summer threshing floor; and the violence of the wind carried them away, and no place was found for them; and the stone which had smitten the image became a great mountain, and filled all the earth.

36  This is the dream; and we will tell the interpretation of it before the king.

36 “This was the vision. Now we will also tell the meaning in the presence of the king. 36 This is the dream; and we will tell the interpretation of it before the king.

37  You, Oh king, are a king of kings; for the God of heaven has given you a kingdom, power, and strength, and glory.

37 You, O king, are king of kings, and to you the Lord of heaven has given the kingdom and power and honor and glory. 37 You, Oh king, are a king of kings, to whom the God of heaven has given a powerful and strong and honourable kingdom,

38  And wherever the children of men dwell, the beasts of the field and the fowls of the heaven has he given into your hand, and has made you ruler over them all. You are this head of gold.

38 In the whole world from humans and wild animals and birds of the air and fish of the sea, he has delivered them into your hands to rule over all—you are the gold head. 38 in every place where the children of men dwell; and he has given into your hand the wild beasts of the field, and the birds of the sky and the fish of the sea, and he has made you lord of all.

39  And after you shall arise another kingdom inferior to you, and another third kingdom of bronze, which shall bear rule over all the earth.

39 And after you will rise a kingdom smaller than yours and another kingdom of bronze, which will rule over the whole earth, 39 You are the head of gold. And after you shall arise another kingdom inferior to you, an a third kingdom which is the copper-alloy, which shall have dominion over all the earth;

40  And the fourth kingdom shall be strong as iron: since iron breaks in pieces and subdues all things; and as iron that breaks all these, shall it break in pieces and bruise.

40 and another kingdom, strong as iron, which saws everything and cuts down every tree, and the whole earth will be shaken. 40 and a fourth kingdom, which shall be strong as iron: as iron beats to powder and subdues all things, so shall it beat to powder and subdue.

41  And whereas you saw the feet and toes, part of potters’ clay, and part of iron, the kingdom shall be divided; but there shall be in it of the strength of the iron, since you saw the iron mixed with miry clay.

41 And as you saw its feet partly of iron and partly of potter’s ware: there will be another kingdom in two parts, and some of the iron base will be in it; just as you saw the iron commixed with the clay ware, 41 And whereas you saw the feet and the toes, part of earthenware and part of iron, the kingdom shall be divided; yet there shall be in it of the strength of iron, as you saw the iron mixed with earthenware.

42  And as the toes of the feet were part of iron, and part of clay, so the kingdom shall be partly strong, and partly broken.

42 part of the kingdom will be strong, and part of it will be broken. 42 And whereas the toes of the feet were part of iron and part of earthenware, part of the kingdom shall be strong, and part of it shall be broken.

43  And whereas you saw iron mixed with miry clay, they shall mingle themselves with the seed of men; but they shall not cling one to another, even as iron is not mixed with clay.

43 And as you saw the iron admixed with the clay ware, they will be commixed in races of humans, but they will not be in agreement or well disposed to one another, even as iron is not able to be blended with earthenware. 43 Whereas you saw the iron mixed with earthenware, they shall be mingled with the seed of men; but they shall not cling together, as the iron doesn’t mix itself with earthenware.

44  And in the days of these kings shall the God of heaven set up a kingdom, which shall never be destroyed; and the kingdom shall not be left to other people, but it shall break in pieces and consume all these kingdoms, and it shall stand forever.

44 And in the times of these kings the God of heaven will set up another kingdom that will be forever and will not be corrupted. And this kingdom will never permit another nation, but it will crush and abolish those kingdoms, and it will stand forever, 44 And in the days of those kings the God of heaven shall set up a kingdom which shall never be destroyed; and his kingdom shall not be left to another people, but it shall beat to pieces and grind to powder all other kingdoms, and it shall stand forever.

45  Forasmuch as you saw that the stone was cut out of the mountain without hands, and that it broke in pieces the iron, the bronze, the clay, the silver, and the gold; the great God has made known to the king what shall come to pass hereafter; and the dream is certain, and the interpretation of it sure.

45 just as you have seen a stone cut out of a mountain, without hands, and it ground the earthenware and the iron and bronze and silver and gold. The great God has shown the king what will be at the end of the days, and the vision is precise, and the meaning of it trustworthy.” 45 Whereas you saw that a stone was cut out of a mountain without hands, and it beat to pieces the earthenware, the iron, the copper-alloy, the silver, the gold; the great God has made known to the king what must happen hereafter; and the dream is true, and the interpretation of it sure.

46  Then the king Nebuchadnezzar fell on his face, and worshipped Daniēl, and commanded that they should offer an oblation and sweet odours to him.

46 Then Nabouchodonosor the king, falling facedown on the ground, did obeisance to Daniēl and ordered that sacrifices and libations be carried out to him. 46 Then king Nabouchodonosor fell on his face, and worshipped Daniēl, and gave orders to offer to him gifts and incense.

47  The king answered to Daniēl, and said, Of a truth it is, that your God is a God of gods, and a Lord of kings, and a revealer of secrets, seeing you could reveal this secret.

47 And the king cried out to Daniēl and said, “It is certain; your God is God of gods and Lord of lords and Lord of kings who alone brings to light hidden mysteries, because you have been able to disclose this mystery!” 47 And the king answered and said to Daniēl, Of a truth your God is a God of gods, and Lord of kings, who reveals mysteries; for you have been able to reveal this mystery.

48  Then the king made Daniēl a great man, and gave him many great gifts, and made him ruler over the whole province of Babylōn, and chief of the governors over all the wise men of Babylōn.

48 Then King Nabouchodonosor, after he magnified Daniēl and bestowed many great presents, appointed him over the affairs of Babylōnia and designated him ruler and leader of all the savants of Babylōn. 48 And the king promoted Daniēl, and gave him great and abundant gifts, and set him over the whole province of Babylōn, and made him chief satrap over all the wise men of Babylōn.

49  Then Daniēl requested of the king, and he set Shadrach, Meshach, and Abed-nego, over the affairs of the province of Babylōn; but Daniēl sat in the gate of the king.

49 And Daniēl petitioned the king that Sedrach, Misach, Abdenago might be appointed over the affairs of the kingdom of Babylōn. And Daniēl was in the royal court. 49 And Daniēl asked of the king, and he appointed Sedrach, Misach, and Abdenago, over the affairs of the province of Babylōn; but Daniēl was in the king᾿s palace.
