4 after he had slain Sihon the king of the Amorites, who dwelt in Heshbon, and Og the king of Bashan, who dwelt at Astaroth in Edrei.

5 On this side Jordan, in the land of Moab, Moses began to declare this law, saying,

6 “Yahweh our Elohim spoke to us in Horeb, saying, ‘You have dwelt long enough on this mountain.

6 The Lord our God spoke to us in Chōrēb, saying, “Let it satisfy you to dwell in this mountain. 6 The Lord our God spoke to us in Chōrēb, saying, “Let it satisfy you to dwell in this mountain.

7 Turn and depart on your journey, and go to the mountain of the Amorites, and to all the places near to it, in the plain, in the hills, and in the valley, and in the south, and by the sea side, to the land of the Canaanites, and to Lebanon, to the great river, the river Euphratēs.

7 Turn around and depart and enter into the mountain of the Amorites, and go to all who dwell around Araba, to the mountain and the plain and to the south, and the seacoast, the land of the Chananites near the sea, and Antilibanus, as far as the great river, Euphratēs. 7 Turn around and depart and enter into the mountain of the Amorites, and go to all who dwell around Araba, to the mountain and the plain and to the south, and the seacoast, the land of the Chananites near the sea, and Antilibanus, as far as the great river, Euphratēs.

8 Behold, I have set the land before you; go in and possess the land which Yahweh swore to your fathers, Abraham, Isaac, and Jacōb, to give to them and to their descendants after them.’

8 Look! I have delivered the land before you; after entering, inherit the land, which I swore to your fathers, Abraham, and Isaac, and Jakōb, to give it to them and to their descendants after them.” 8 Look! I have delivered the land before you; after entering, inherit the land, which I swore to your fathers, Abraham, and Isaac, and Jakōb, to give it to them and to their descendants after them.”

9 And I spoke to you at that time, saying, ‘I am not able to carry you myself alone.

9 And I spoke to you at that time, saying, “I will not be able to carry you alone. 9 And I spoke to you at that time, saying, “I will not be able to carry you alone.

10 Yahweh your Elohim has multiplied you, and, behold, you are this day as the stars of heaven for multitude.

10 The Lord your God has multiplied you, and, look! you are today like the stars of the sky for quantity. 10 The Lord your God has multiplied you, and, look! you are today like the stars of the sky for quantity.

11 (Yahweh Elohim of your fathers make you 1000 times so many more as you are, and bless you, as he has promised you!)

11 May the Lord God of your fathers, add to you, as you are, 1000 times and bless you, as he has spoken to you! 11 May the Lord God of your fathers, add to you, as you are, 1000 times and bless you, as he has spoken to you!

12 How can I myself alone bear your troubles, and your burdens, and your arguments?

12 πῶς δυνήσομαι μόνος φέρειν τὸν κόπον ὑμῶν καὶ τὴν ὑπόστασιν ὑμῶν καὶ τὰς ἀντιλογίας ὑμῶν; 12 πῶς δυνήσομαι μόνος φέρειν τὸν κόπον ὑμῶν καὶ τὴν ὑπόστασιν ὑμῶν καὶ τὰς ἀντιλογίας ὑμῶν;
12 How will I alone be able to carry your labour and your sustenance and your disputes? 12 How will I alone be able to carry your labour and your sustenance and your disputes?

13 Take men of wisdom, understanding, and knowledge from among your tribes, and I will make them rulers over you.’

13 Give yourselves men, wise and skilled and prudent for your tribes, and I will appoint your leaders from them.” 13 Give yourselves men, wise and skilled and prudent for your tribes, and I will appoint your leaders from them.”

14 And you answered me, and said, ‘The thing that you have spoken is good for us to do.’

14 And you answered me and said, “The word which you have spoken to do is good.” 14 And you answered me and said, “The word which you have spoken to do is good.”

15 So I took the chief of your tribes, wise men, and known, and made them heads over you, captains over thousands, and captains over hundreds, and captains over fifties, and captains over tens, and officers among your tribes.

15 And I took from your men, wise and skilled and prudent, and appointed them to be leaders over you; officers of thousands and officers of hundreds and officers of fifties and officers of tens and recorders for your judges. 15 And I took from your men, wise and skilled and prudent, and appointed them to be leaders over you; officers of thousands and officers of hundreds and officers of fifties and officers of tens and recorders for your judges.

16 And I charged your judges at that time, saying, ‘Hear the causes between your brothers, and judge righteously between every man and his brother, and the stranger who is with him.

16 And I gave orders to your judges at that time, saying; “Hear a case between your brothers and judge rightly between a man and between his brother and between his immigrant. 16 And I gave orders to your judges at that time, saying; “Hear a case between your brothers and judge rightly between a man and between his brother and between his immigrant.

17 You shall not respect persons in judgment; but you shall hear the small as well as the great; you shall not be afraid of the face of a man; for the judgment is El’s; and the cause that is too hard for you, bring it to me, and I will hear it.’

17 You shall not recognize a face when judging; according to the small so you shall judge according to the great; you shall not shrink from the face of a man, because the judgment is God’s. And the case, if it is too hard for you, you will bring it to me, and I will hear it.” 17 You shall not recognize a face when judging; according to the small so you shall judge according to the great; you shall not shrink from the face of a man, because the judgment is God’s. And the case, if it is too hard for you, you will bring it to me, and I will hear it.”

18 And I commanded you at that time all the things which you should do.

18 And I gave orders to you at that time all the words that you should do. 18 And I gave orders to you at that time all the words that you should do.

19 And when we departed from Horeb, we went through all that great and terrible wilderness, which you saw by the way of the mountain of the Amorites, as Yahweh our Elohim commanded us; and we came to Kedesh-barnea.

19 And after departing from Chōrēb, we went through all that great and fearful wilderness that you saw, by route of the mountain of the Amorrite, just as our Lord God had gave orders to us, and we came as far as Kadēs Barnē. 19 And after departing from Chōrēb, we went through all that great and fearful wilderness that you saw, by route of the mountain of the Amorrite, just as our Lord God had gave orders to us, and we came as far as Kadēs Barnē.

20 And I said to you, ‘You have come to the mountain of the Amorites, which Yahweh our Elohim gave to us.

20 And I said to you, “You have come as far as the mountain of the Amorrite, which our Lord God is giving you. 20 And I said to you, “You have come as far as the mountain of the Amorrite, which our Lord God is giving you.

21 Behold, Yahweh your Elohim has set the land before you; go up and possess it, as Yahweh Elohim of your fathers has said to you; don’t fear, neither be discouraged.’

21 Look! Your Lord God has given over to you the land before you. After having gone up, inherit, in the manner that the Lord God of your fathers, said to you; don’t fear, neither be afraid.” 21 Look! Your Lord God has given over to you the land before you. After having gone up, inherit, in the manner that the Lord God of your fathers, said to you; don’t fear, neither be afraid.”

22 And everyone of you came near to me and said, ‘We will send men before us, and they shall search us out the land, and bring us word again by what way we must go up, and into what cities we shall come.’

22 And all of you came to me and said, “Let us send men ahead of us, and let them explore the land for us, and let them report to us an answer about the way through which we shall go up on it and the cities into which we will enter into them.” 22 And all of you came to me and said, “Let us send men ahead of us, and let them explore the land for us, and let them report to us an answer about the way through which we shall go up on it and the cities into which we will enter into them.”

23 And the saying pleased me well; and I took twelve men from you, one from each tribe.

23 And the matter was pleasing to me, and I took from you twelve men, one man per tribe. 23 And the matter was pleasing to me, and I took from you twelve men, one man per tribe.

24 And they turned and went up into the mountain, and came to the valley of Eshcol, and searched it out.

24 And after setting out, they went up into the mountain and went as far as a grape cluster valley and explored it. 24 And after setting out, they went up into the mountain and went as far as a grape cluster Valley and explored it.

25 And they took some of the fruit of the land in their hands, and brought it down to us, and brought us word again, and said, ‘It is a good land which Yahweh our Elohim gives us.’

25 And they took in their hands some of the fruit of the land and brought it down to us and said, “The land is good that our Lord God is giving us.” 25 And they took in their hands some of the fruit of the land and brought it down to us and said, “The land is good that our Lord God is giving us.”

26 Instead you would not go up, but rebelled against the command of Yahweh your Elohim.

26 And you didn’t want to go up. And you disobeyed the word of your Lord God, 26 And you didn’t want to go up. And you disobeyed the word of your Lord God,

27 And you murmured in your tents, and said, ‘Because Yahweh hated us, he has brought us forth out of the land of Egypt, to deliver us into the hand of the Amorites, to destroy us.

27 and you grumbled in your tents and said, “It is because the Lord hates us that he brought us out of the land of Aigypt, to give us over into the hands of the Amorrites to destroy us utterly. 27 and you grumbled in your tents and said, “It is because the Lord hates us that he brought us out of the land of Aigypt, to give us over into the hands of the Amorrites to destroy us utterly.

28 Where shall we go up? Our brothers have discouraged our heart, saying, “The people are greater and taller than we; the cities are great and walled up to the sky; and moreover we have seen the sons of the Anakims there.” ’

28 ποῦ ἡμεῖς ἀναβαίνομεν;
28 ποῦ ἡμεῖς ἀναβαίνομεν;
28 Where are we going up? Your brothers drew away your hearts, saying, ‘A nation, great and numerous and more powerful than we! And cities, large and walled up to the sky! And we have also seen sons of giants there!’ 28 Where are we going up? Your brothers drew away your hearts, saying, ‘A nation, great and numerous and more powerful than we! And cities, large and walled up to the sky! And we have also seen sons of giants there!’

29 Then I said to you, ‘Don’t be terrified, neither be afraid of them.

29 And I said to you, “Don’t be terrified, neither be afraid of them; 29 And I said to you, “Don’t be terrified, neither be afraid of them;

30 Yahweh your Elohim who goes before you, he shall fight for you, according to all that he did for you in Egypt before your eyes;

30 Your Lord God, is the one who goes before you, he will vanquish them together with you, according to all which he did for you in the land of Aigypt 30 Your Lord God, is the one who goes before you, he will vanquish them together with you, according to all which he did for you in the land of Aigypt

31 and in the wilderness, where you have seen how that Yahweh your Elohim carried you, as a man carries his son, in all the way that you went, until you came into this place.’

31 and in this wilderness which you saw, how your Lord God nourished you, as some man would nourish his son, along all the way that you went until you came to this place. 31 and in this wilderness which you saw, how your Lord God nourished you, as some man would nourish his son, along all the way that you went until you came to this place.

32 Yet in this thing you didn’t believe Yahweh your Elohim,

32 And in this matter you didn’t believe your Lord God, 32 And in this matter you didn’t believe your Lord God,

33 who went in the way before you, to search out a place for you to camp your tents in, in fire by night, to show you by what way you should go, and in a cloud by day.

33 who went before you on the way to choose a place for you, leading you by fire at night, showing you the route by which you should go on it, and in a cloud by day.” 33 who went before you on the way to choose a place for you, leading you by fire at night, showing you the route by which you should go on it, and in a cloud by day.”

34 And Yahweh heard the voice of your words, and was wroth, and swore, saying,

34 And the Lord heard the sound of your words and, being provoked, he swore, saying. 34 And the Lord heard the sound of your words and, being provoked, he swore, saying.

35 ‘Surely there shall not one of these men of this evil generation see that good land, which I swore to give to your fathers,

35 “Not one of these men shall ever see this good land that I swore to their fathers, 35 “Not one of these men shall ever see this good land that I swore to their fathers,

36 except Caleb the son of Jephunneh; he shall see it, and to him I will give the land that he has walked upon, and to his children, because he has entirely followed Yahweh.’

36 Except Chaleb son of Jephonnē, this one shall see it, and to this one I will give the land on which he trod, and to his sons, because he clung to the things of the Lord.” 36 Except Chaleb son of Jephonnē, this one shall see it, and to this one I will give the land on which he trod, and to his sons, because he clung to the things of the Lord.”

37 Also Yahweh was angry with me for your sakes, saying, ‘You also shall not go in to that place.

37 The Lord was even angry with me because of you, saying, “Not even you shall enter there. 37 The Lord was even angry with me because of you, saying, “Not even you shall enter there.

38 But Joshua the son of Nun, who stands before you, he shall go in to that place; encourage him; for he shall cause Israēl to inherit it.

38 Jēsous son of Nauē, who stands beside you, this one shall enter there; support him, because he will take possession of it for Israēl. 38 Jēsous son of Nauē, who stands beside you, this one shall enter there; support him, because he will take possession of it for Israēl.

39 Moreover your little ones, whom you said should be a prey, and your children, who in that day had no knowledge between good and evil, they shall go in to that place, and to them I will give it, and they shall possess it.

39 And every young child, who today doesn’t know good or evil, they shall enter there, and to them I will give it, and they shall inherit it. 39 And every young child, who today doesn’t know good or evil, they shall enter there, and to them I will give it, and they shall inherit it.

40 But as for you, turn and take your journey into the wilderness by the way of the Red Sea.’

40 And after you have turned, march into the wilderness, by the route toward the Red Sea.” 40 And after you have turned, march into the wilderness, by the route toward the Red Sea.”

41 Then you answered and said to me, ‘We have sinned against Yahweh, we will go up and fight, according to all that Yahweh our Elohim commanded us.’ And when every man of you had girded on his weapons of war, you were ready to go up into the hill.

41 And you answered and said to me, “We have sinned against our Lord God! Let us go up and fight, in accordance with all things that our Lord God gave orders to us.” And, each of you, after you had taken up his military stuff and had gathered together, went up into the mountain. 41 And you answered and said to me, “We have sinned against our Lord God! Let us go up and fight, in accordance with all things that our Lord God gave orders to us.” And, each of you, after you had taken up his military stuff and had gathered together, went up into the mountain.

42 And Yahweh said to me, ‘Say to them, “Don’t go up, neither fight; for I am not among you; lest you be smitten before your enemies.” ’

42 And the Lord said to me, “Say to them, ‘You shall not go up, neither shall you battle, for I am not with you, then you shall not be wiped out before your enemies.’ ” 42 And the Lord said to me, “Say to them, ‘You shall not go up, neither shall you battle, for I am not with you, then you shall not be wiped out before your enemies.’ ”

43 So I spoke to you; and you would not hear, but rebelled against the command of Yahweh, and went presumptuously up into the hill.

43 And I spoke to you, but you didn’t listen to me. And you transgressed the word of the Lord, and in defiance you went up into the mountain. 43 And I spoke to you, but you didn’t listen to me. And you transgressed the word of the Lord, and in defiance you went up into the mountain.

44 And the Amorites, who dwelt in that mountain, came out against you, and chased you, as bees do, and destroyed you in Seir, even to Hormah.

44 And the Amorrite who lived in that mountain came out to meet you and chased you as bees might do. And they kept wounding you from Sēir as far as Herma. 44 And the Amorrite who lived in that mountain came out to meet you and chased you as bees might do. And they kept wounding you from Sēir as far as Herma.

45 And you returned and wept before Yahweh; but Yahweh would not listen to your voice, nor give ear to you.

45 And after sitting down, you were weeping before the Lord, and the Lord didn’t listen to your voice nor paid you any attention. 45 And after sitting down, you were weeping before the Lord, and the Lord didn’t listen to your voice nor paid you any attention.

46 So you abode in Kedesh many days, according to the days that you abode there.”

46 And you camped at Kadēs for many days, however many days you camped. 46 And you camped at Kadēs for many days, however many days you camped.
