A Call to Repentance

1 In the eighth month, in the second year of Darius, came the word of Yahweh to Zechariah, the son of Berechiah, the son of Iddo the prophet, saying,

1 In the eighth month, in the second year of the reign of Dareius, the word of the Lord came to Zacharias, the son of Barachias, the son of Addō, the prophet, saying, 1 In the eighth month, in the second year of the reign of Dareius, the word of the Lord came to Zacharias, the son of Barachias, the son of Addō, the prophet, saying,

2 Yahweh has been very displeased with your fathers.

2 With great anger, the Lord was angry with your fathers. 2 With great anger, the Lord was angry with your fathers.

3 Therefore say to them, Thus says Yahweh of hosts; Turn to me, says Yahweh of hosts, and I will turn to you, says Yahweh of hosts.

3 And you shall say to them, Thus says the Lord Almighty. Return to me and I will return to you, says the Lord. 3 And you shall say to them, Thus says the Lord Almighty. Return to me, says the Lord of hosts, and I will return to you, says the Lord of hosts.

4 Be not as your fathers, to whom the former prophets have cried, saying, Thus says Yahweh of hosts; Turn now from your evil ways, and from your evil doings; but they did not hear, nor hearken to me, says Yahweh.

4 And don’t be like your fathers, to whom the former prophets charged, saying, “Thus says the Lord Almighty. Turn away from your evil ways, and from your evil practices:” but they paid no attention to listen to me, says the Lord. 4 And don’t be like your fathers, to whom the former prophets charged, saying, “Thus says the Lord Almighty. Turn away from your evil ways, and from your evil practices:” but they didn’t obey and paid no attention to listen to me, says the Lord.

5 Your fathers, where are they? And the prophets, do they live forever?

5 οἱ πατέρες ὑμῶν ποῦ εἰσιν;
καὶ οἱ προφῆται μὴ τὸν αἰῶνα ζήσονται;
5 οἱ πατέρες ὑμῶν ποῦ εἰσι καὶ οἱ προφῆται;
μὴ τὸν αἰῶνα ζήσονται;
5 Your fathers, where are they? And the prophets, will they live forever? 5 Your fathers, where are they? And the prophets, will they live forever?

6 But my words and my statutes, which I commanded my servants the prophets, didn’t they take hold of your fathers? And they returned and said, Like as Yahweh of hosts thought to do to us, according to our ways, and according to our doings, so has he dealt with us.

6 But you are receiving my words and my precepts which I commanded by my spirit to my servants the prophets, didn’t they seize your fathers? And they answered and said, “As the Lord Almighty determined to do to us, according to our ways, and according to our practices, so he did to us.” 6 But you are receiving my words and my precepts which I commanded by my spirit to my servants the prophets, didn’t they seize your fathers? And they answered and said, “As the Lord Almighty determined to do to us, according to our ways, and according to our practices, so he did to us.”

Patrol of the Earth

7 Upon the 24th day of the eleventh month, which is the month Sebat, in the second year of Darius, came the word of Yahweh to Zechariah, the son of Berechiah, the son of Iddo the prophet, saying,

8 I saw by night, and behold a man riding on a red horse, and he stood among the myrtle trees that were in the bottom; and behind him there were red horses, speckled, and white.

8 In the night I saw and look! a man mounted on a red horse, and this one stood between the two shaded mountains; and behind him were red, grey, dappled, and white horses. 8 In the night I saw and look! a man mounted on a red horse, and this one stood between the shaded mountains; and behind him were red, grey, dappled, and white horses.

9 Then said I, Oh my lord, what are these? And the angel who talked with me said to me, I will show you what these be.

9 καὶ εἶπα, τί οὗτοι, κύριε;
9 καὶ εἶπα· τί οὗτοι, Κύριε;
9 And I said, “What are these, sir?” And the angel spoke with me said to me, “I will show you what these things are.” 9 And I said, “What are these, sir?” And the angel spoke with me said to me, “I will show you what these things are.”

10 And the man who stood among the myrtle trees answered and said, These are they whom Yahweh has sent to walk to and fro through the earth.

10 And the man who stood between the mountains answered, and said to me, “These are those whom the Lord has sent forth to patrol around the land.” 10 And the man who stood between the mountains answered, and said to me, “These are those whom the Lord has sent forth to patrol around the land.”

11 And they answered the angel of Yahweh who stood among the myrtle trees, and said, We have walked to and fro through the earth, and, behold, all the earth sits still, and is at rest.

11 And they answered the angel of the Lord who stood between the mountains, and said, “We have patrolled around all the land, and, look! all the land is inhabited, and is at rest.” 11 And they answered the angel of the Lord who stood between the mountains, and said, “We have patrolled around all the land, and, look! all the land is inhabited, and is at rest.”

12 Then the angel of Yahweh answered and said, Oh Yahweh of hosts, how long will you not have mercy on Jerusalem and on the cities of Judah, against which you have had indignation these 70 years?

12 Καὶ ἀπεκρίθη ἄγγελος κυρίου καὶ εἶπεν, κύριε παντοκράτωρ, ἕως τίνος οὐ μὴ ἐλεήσῃς τὴν Ἱερουσαλὴμ καὶ τὰς πόλεις Ἰούδα, ἃς ὑπερεῖδες τοῦτο ἑβδομηκοστὸν ἔτος; 12 καὶ ἀπεκρίθη ἄγγελος Κυρίου καὶ εἶπε· Κύριε παντοκράτωρ, ἕως τίνος οὐ μὴ ἐλεήσῃς τὴν Ἱερουσαλὴμ καὶ τὰς πόλεις Ἰούδα, ἃς ὑπερεῖδες τοῦτο ἑβδομηκοστὸν ἔτος;
12 Then the angel of the Lord answered and said, “Oh Lord Almighty, how long wilt you have no mercy on Jerusalēm, and the cities of Jouda, which you have neglected this 70th year?” 12 Then the angel of the Lord answered and said, “Oh Lord Almighty, how long wilt you have no mercy on Jerusalēm, and the cities of Jouda, which you have neglected this 70th year?”

13 And Yahweh answered the angel who talked with me with good words and comfortable words.

13 And the Lord Almighty answered the angel who spoke good things and comforting words with me. 13 And the Lord Almighty answered the angel who spoke good things and comforting words with me.

14 So the angel who communed with me said to me, Cry, saying, Thus says Yahweh of hosts; I am jealous for Jerusalem and for Zion with a great jealousy.

14 And the angel who spoke with me said to me, Cry out and say, Thus says the Lord Almighty. I have been jealous for Jerusalēm and Siōn with great jealousy. 14 And the angel who spoke with me said to me, Cry out and say, Thus says the Lord Almighty. I have been jealous for Jerusalēm and Siōn with great jealousy.

15 And I am very very displeased with the heathen who are at ease; for I was but a little displeased, and they helped forward the affliction.

15 With great anger, I am angry with the nations that join to attack her; on the one hand, I was angry about a few things, but they joined to attack her for evil. 15 With great anger, I am angry with the nations that join to attack her; on the one hand, I was angry about a few things, but they joined to attack her for evil.

16 Therefore thus says Yahweh; I am returned to Jerusalem with mercies: my house shall be built in it, says Yahweh of hosts, and a line shall be stretched forth on Jerusalem.

16 Therefore thus says the Lord. I will return to Jerusalēm with compassion; and my house shall be rebuilt in her, says the Lord Almighty, and a measuring line shall again be stretched out over Jerusalēm. 16 Therefore thus says the Lord. I will return to Jerusalēm with compassion; and my house shall be rebuilt in her, says the Lord Almighty, and a measuring line shall again be stretched out over Jerusalēm.

17 Cry yet, saying, Thus says Yahweh of hosts; My cities through prosperity shall yet be spread abroad; and Yahweh shall yet comfort Zion, and shall yet choose Jerusalem.

17 And the angel that spoke with me said to me, “Shout yet, and saying, Thus says the Lord Almighty. Again the cities will be spread abroad for good things; and the Lord will again have mercy on Siōn, and shall choose Jerusalēm again.” 17 And the angel that spoke with me said to me, “Shout, and saying, Thus says the Lord Almighty. Again the cities will be spread abroad for good things; and the Lord will again have mercy on Siōn, and shall choose Jerusalēm.”

18 [M 2:1] Then lifted I up my eyes, and saw, and behold four horns.

18 And I lifted up my eyes and saw, and look! four horns. 18 And I lifted up my eyes and saw, and look! four horns.

19 [M 2:2] And I said to the angel that talked with me, What be these? And he answered me, These are the horns which have scattered Judah, Israēl, and Jerusalem.

19 Καὶ εἶπα πρὸς τὸν ἄγγελον τὸν λαλοῦντα ἐν ἐμοί, τί ἐστιν ταῦτα, κύριε;
19 καὶ εἶπα πρὸς τὸν ἄγγελον τὸν λαλοῦντα ἐν ἐμοί· τί ἔστι ταῦτα, Κύριε;
19 And I said to the angel who spoke with me, “What are these things, sir?” And he said to me, “These are the horns that have scattered Jouda, and Israēl, and Jerusalēm.” 19 And I said to the angel who spoke with me, “What are these things, sir?” And he said to me, “These are the horns that have scattered Jouda, and Israēl, and Jerusalēm.”

20 [M 2:3] And Yahweh showed me four carpenters.

20 And the Lord showed me four craftsmen. 20 And the Lord showed me four craftsmen.

21 [M 2:4] Then said I, What have these come to do? And he spoke, saying, These are the horns which have scattered Judah, so that no man lifted up his head; but these are come to terrify them, to cast out the horns of the Gentiles, which lifted up their horn over the land of Judah to scatter it.

21 Καὶ εἶπα, τί οὗτοι ἔρχονται ποιῆσαι;
21 καὶ εἶπα· τί οὗτοι ἔρχονται ποιῆσαι;
21 And I said, “What are these coming to do?” And he said to me, “These are the horns that scattered Jouda, and they broke Israēl in pieces, and none of them lifted up a head; and these came to sharpen them, the four horns into their hands, the nations who lifted up their horns against the land of the Lord to scatter it.” 21 And I said, “What are these coming to do?” And he said, “These are the horns that scattered Jouda, and they broke Israēl in pieces, and none of them lifted up a head; and these came to sharpen them, the four horns into their hands, the nations who lifted up their horns against the land of the Lord to scatter it.”
