Haggai

1 In the seventh month, in the 21st day of the month, came the word of Yahweh by the prophet Haggai, saying,

בַּשְּׁבִיעִי בְּעֶשְׂרִים וְאֶחָד לַחֹדֶשׁ הָיָה דְּבַר ־ יְהוָה בְּיַד ־ חַגַּי הַנָּבִיא לֵאמֹר׃

1 τῷ ἑβδόμῳ μηνὶ μιᾷ καὶ εἰκάδι τοῦ μηνὸς ἐλάλησεν κύριος ἐν χειρὶ Ἁγγαίου τοῦ προφήτου λέγων	1 τῷ μηνὶ τῷ ἑβδόμῳ, μιᾷ καὶ εἰκάδι τοῦ μηνός, ἐλάλησε Κύριος ἐν χειρὶ Ἀγγαίου τοῦ προφήτου λέγων·

2 Speak now to Zerubbabel the son of Shealtiel, governor of Judah, and to Joshua the son of Josedech, the high priest, and to the residue of the people, saying,

אֱמָר ־ נָא אֶל ־ זְרֻבָּבֶל בֶּן ־ שַׁלְתִּיאֵל פַּחַת יְהוּדָה וְאֶל ־ יְהֹושֻׁעַ בֶּן ־ יְהֹוצָדָק הַכֹּהֵן הַגָּדֹול וְאֶל ־ שְׁאֵרִית הָעָם לֵאמֹר׃

2 εἰπὸν δὴ πρὸς Ζοροβάβελ τὸν τοῦ Σαλαθιὴλ ἐκ φυλῆς Ἰούδα καὶ πρὸς Ἰησοῦν τὸν τοῦ Ἰωσεδὲκ τὸν ἱερέα τὸν μέγαν καὶ πρὸς πάντας τοὺς καταλοίπους τοῦ λαοῦ λέγων	2 εἰπὸν δὴ πρὸς Ζοροβάβελ τὸν τοῦ Σαλαθιὴλ ἐκ φυλῆς Ἰούδα καὶ πρὸς Ἰησοῦν τοῦ Ἰωσεδὲκ τὸν ἱερέα τὸν μέγαν καὶ πρὸς πάντας τοὺς καταλοίπους τοῦ λαοῦ λέγων·

מִי בָכֶם הַנִּשְׁאָר אֲשֶׁר רָאָה אֶת ־ הַבַּיִת הַזֶּה בִּכְבֹודֹו הָרִאשֹׁון וּמָה אַתֶּם רֹאִים אֹתֹו עַתָּה הֲלֹוא כָמֹהוּ כְּאַיִן בְּעֵינֵיכֶם׃

3 τίς ἐξ ὑμῶν ὃς εἶδεν τὸν οἶκον τοῦτον ἐν τῇ δόξῃ αὐτοῦ τῇ ἔμπροσθεν; καὶ πῶς ὑμεῖς βλέπετε αὐτὸν νῦν; καθὼς οὐχ ὑπάρχοντα ἐνώπιον ὑμῶν.	3 τίς ἐξ ὑμῶν, ὃς εἶδε τὸν οἶκον τοῦτον ἐν τῇ δόξῃ αὐτοῦ τῇ ἔμπροσθεν; καὶ πῶς ὑμεῖς βλέπετε αὐτὸν νῦν καθὼς οὐχ ὑπάρχοντα ἐνώπιον ὑμῶν;

4 Yet now be strong, Oh Zerubbabel, says Yahweh; and be strong, Oh Joshua, son of Josedech, the high priest; and be strong, all you people of the land, says Yahweh, and work; for I am with you, says Yahweh of armies.

וְעַתָּה חֲזַק זְרֻבָּבֶל נְאֻם ־ יְהוָה וַחֲזַק יְהֹושֻׁעַ בֶּן ־ יְהֹוצָדָק הַכֹּהֵן הַגָּדֹול וַחֲזַק כָּל ־ עַם הָאָרֶץ נְאֻם ־ יְהוָה וַעֲשׂוּ כִּי ־ אֲנִי אִתְּכֶם נְאֻם יְהוָה צְבָאֹות׃

5 According to the word that I covenanted with you when you came out of Egypt, so my spirit remains among you: fear you not.

אֶת ־ הַדָּבָר אֲשֶׁר ־ כָּרַתִּי אִתְּכֶם בְּצֵאתְכֶם מִמִּצְרַיִם וְרוּחִי עֹמֶדֶת בְּתֹוכְכֶם אַל ־ תִּירָאוּ׃ ס

6 For thus says Yahweh of armies; Yet once, it is a little while, and I will shake the heavens, and the earth, and the sea, and the dry land;

7 And I will shake all nations, and the desire of all nations shall come; and I will fill this house with glory, says Yahweh of armies.

וְהִרְעַשְׁתִּי אֶת ־ כָּל ־ הַגֹּויִם וּבָאוּ חֶמְדַּת כָּל ־ הַגֹּויִם וּמִלֵּאתִי אֶת ־ הַבַּיִת הַזֶּה כָּבֹוד אָמַר יְהוָה צְבָאֹות׃

7 καὶ συσσείσω πάντα τὰ ἔθνη, καὶ ἥξει τὰ ἐκλεκτὰ πάντων τῶν ἐθνῶν, καὶ πλήσω τὸν οἶκον τοῦτον δόξης, λέγει κύριος παντοκράτωρ.	7 καὶ συσσείσω πάντα τὰ ἔθνη, καὶ ἥξει τὰ ἐκλεκτὰ πάντων τῶν ἐθνῶν, καὶ πλήσω τὸν οἶκον τοῦτον δόξης, λέγει Κύριος παντοκράτωρ.

8 The silver is mine, and the gold is mine, says Yahweh of armies.

לִי הַכֶּסֶף וְלִי הַזָּהָב נְאֻם יְהוָה צְבָאֹות׃

9 The glory of this latter house shall be greater than of the former, says Yahweh of armies; and in this place will I give peace, says Yahweh of armies.

גָּדֹול יִהְיֶה כְּבֹוד הַבַּיִת הַזֶּה הָאַחֲרֹון מִן ־ הָרִאשֹׁון אָמַר יְהוָה צְבָאֹות וּבַמָּקֹום הַזֶּה אֶתֵּן שָׁלֹום נְאֻם יְהוָה צְבָאֹות׃ פ

9 διότι μεγάλη ἔσται ἡ δόξα τοῦ οἴκου τούτου ἡ ἐσχάτη ὑπὲρ τὴν πρώτην, λέγει κύριος παντοκράτωρ. καὶ ἐν τῷ τόπῳ τούτῳ δώσω εἰρήνην, λέγει κύριος παντοκράτωρ, καὶ εἰρήνην ψυχῆς εἰς περιποίησιν παντὶ τῷ κτίζοντι τοῦ ἀναστῆσαι τὸν ναὸν τοῦτον.	9 διότι μεγάλη ἔσται ἡ δόξα τοῦ οἴκου τούτου ἡ ἐσχάτη ὑπὲρ τὴν πρώτην, λέγει Κύριος παντοκράτωρ· καὶ ἐν τῷ τόπῳ τούτῳ δώσω εἰρήνην, λέγει Κύριος παντοκράτωρ, καὶ εἰρήνην ψυχῆς εἰς περιποίησιν παντὶ τῷ κτίζοντι τοῦ ἀναστῆσαι τὸν ναὸν τοῦτον.

10 In the 24th day of the ninth month, in the second year of Darius, came the word of Yahweh by Haggai the prophet, saying,

בְּעֶשְׂרִים וְאַרְבָּעָה לַתְּשִׁיעִי בִּשְׁנַת שְׁתַּיִם לְדָרְיָוֶשׁ הָיָה דְּבַר ־ יְהוָה אֶל ־ חַגַּי הַנָּבִיא לֵאמֹר׃

10 τετράδι καὶ εἰκάδι τοῦ ἐνάτου μηνὸς ἔτους δευτέρου ἐπὶ Δαρείου ἐγένετο λόγος κυρίου πρὸς Ἁγγαιὸν τὸν προφήτην λέγων	10 Τετράδι καὶ εἰκάδι τοῦ ἐνάτου μηνός, ἔτους δευτέρου, ἐπὶ Δαρείου, ἐγένετο λόγος Κυρίου πρὸς Ἀγγαῖον τὸν προφήτην λέγων·

11 Thus says Yahweh of armies; Ask now the priests concerning the law, saying,

כֹּה אָמַר יְהוָה צְבָאֹות שְׁאַל ־ נָא אֶת ־ הַכֹּהֲנִים תֹּורָה לֵאמֹר׃

12 If one bear holy flesh in the skirt of his garment, and with his skirt do touch bread, or stew, or wine, or oil, or any food, shall it be holy? And the priests answered and said, No.

הֵן יִשָּׂא ־ אִישׁ בְּשַׂר ־ קֹדֶשׁ בִּכְנַף בִּגְדֹו וְנָגַע בִּכְנָפֹו אֶל ־ הַלֶּחֶם וְאֶל ־ הַנָּזִיד וְאֶל ־ הַיַּיִן וְאֶל ־ שֶׁמֶן וְאֶל ־ כָּל ־ מַאֲכָל הֲיִקְדָּשׁ וַיַּעֲנוּ הַכֹּהֲנִים וַיֹּאמְרוּ לֹא׃

12 ἐὰν λάβῃ ἄνθρωπος κρέας ἅγιον ἐν τῷ ἄκρῳ τοῦ ἱματίου αὐτοῦ καὶ ἅψηται τὸ ἄκρον τοῦ ἱματίου αὐτοῦ ἄρτου ἢ ἑψέματος ἢ οἴνου ἢ ἐλαίου ἢ παντὸς βρώματος, εἰ ἁγιασθήσεται; καὶ ἀπεκρίθησαν οἱ ἱερεῖς καὶ εἶπαν οὔ.	12 ἐὰν λάβῃ ἄνθρωπος κρέας ἅγιον ἐν τῷ ἄκρῳ τοῦ ἱματίου αὐτοῦ καὶ ἅψηται τὸ ἄκρον τοῦ ἱματίου αὐτοῦ ἄρτου ἢ ἑψήματος ἢ οἴνου ἢ ἐλαίου ἢ παντὸς βρώματος, εἰ ἁγιασθήσεται; καὶ ἀπεκρίθησαν οἱ ἱερεῖς καὶ εἶπαν· οὔ.
12 If a man should take holy meat in the skirt of his garment, and the skirt of his garment should touch bread, or stew, or wine, or olive oil, or any food, shall it be holy? 13 Then Haggai said, If someone who is unclean by a dead body touch any of these, shall it be unclean? And the priests answered and said, It shall be unclean.

וַיֹּאמֶר חַגַּי אִם ־ יִגַּע טְמֵא ־ נֶפֶשׁ בְּכָל ־ אֵלֶּה הֲיִטְמָא וַיַּעֲנוּ הַכֹּהֲנִים וַיֹּאמְרוּ יִטְמָא׃

13 καὶ εἶπεν Ἁγγαιὸς ἐὰν ἅψηται μεμιαμμένος ἐπὶ ψυχῇ ἀπὸ παντὸς τούτων, εἰ μιανθήσεται; καὶ ἀπεκρίθησαν οἱ ἱερεῖς καὶ εἶπαν μιανθήσεται.	13 καὶ εἶπε Ἀγγαῖος· ἐὰν ἅψηται μεμιασμένος ἀκάθαρτος ἐπὶ ψυχῇ ἐπὶ παντὸς τούτων, εἰ μιανθήσεται; καὶ ἀπεκρίθησαν οἱ ἱερεῖς καὶ εἶπαν· μιανθήσεται.
13 Then Haggai said, “If someone who is defiled by a soul, should touch any of these, will it be defiled?” And the priests answered and said, “It will be defiled.”	13 Then Aggai said, “If someone who is defiled by an unclean soul, should touch any of these, will it be defiled?” And the priests answered and said, “It will be defiled.”

14 Then answered Haggai, and said, So is this people, and so is this nation before me, says Yahweh; and so is every work of their hands; and what they offer there is unclean.

וַיַּעַן חַגַּי וַיֹּאמֶר כֵּן הָעָם ־ הַזֶּה וְכֵן ־ הַגֹּוי הַזֶּה לְפָנַי נְאֻם ־ יְהוָה וְכֵן כָּל ־ מַעֲשֵׂה יְדֵיהֶם וַאֲשֶׁר יַקְרִיבוּ שָׁם טָמֵא הוּא׃

14 καὶ ἀπεκρίθη Ἁγγαιὸς καὶ εἶπεν οὕτως ὁ λαὸς οὗτος καὶ οὕτως τὸ ἔθνος τοῦτο ἐνώπιον ἐμοῦ, λέγει κύριος, καὶ οὕτως πάντα τὰ ἔργα τῶν χειρῶν αὐτῶν, καὶ ὃς ἐὰν ἐγγίσῃ ἐκεῖ, μιανθήσεται ἕνεκεν τῶν λημμάτων αὐτῶν τῶν ὀρθρινῶν, ὀδυνηθήσονται ἀπὸ προσώπου πόνων αὐτῶν. καὶ ἐμισεῖτε ἐν πύλαις ἐλέγχοντας.	14 καὶ ἀπεκρίθη Ἀγγαῖος καὶ εἶπε· οὕτως ὁ λαὸς οὗτος καὶ οὕτως τὸ ἔθνος τοῦτο ἐνώπιον ἐμοῦ, λέγει Κύριος, καὶ οὕτως πάντα τὰ ἔργα τῶν χειρῶν αὐτῶν, καὶ ὃς ἐὰν ἐγγίσῃ ἐκεῖ, μιανθήσεται ἕνεκεν τῶν λημμάτων αὐτῶν τῶν ὀρθρινῶν, ὀδυνηθήσονται ἀπὸ προσώπου πόνων αὐτῶν· καὶ ἐμισεῖτε ἐν πύλαις ἐλέγχοντας

15 And now, please, consider from this day and upward, from before a stone was laid on a stone in the temple of Yahweh.

וְעַתָּה שִׂימוּ ־ נָא לְבַבְכֶם מִן ־ הַיֹּום הַזֶּה וָמָעְלָה מִטֶּרֶם שׂוּם ־ אֶבֶן אֶל ־ אֶבֶן בְּהֵיכַל יְהוָה׃

15 καὶ νῦν θέσθε δὴ εἰς τὰς καρδίας ὑμῶν ἀπὸ τῆς ἡμέρας ταύτης καὶ ὑπεράνω πρὸ τοῦ θεῖναι λίθον ἐπὶ λίθον ἐν τῷ ναῷ κυρίου	15 καὶ νῦν θέσθε δὴ εἰς τὰς καρδίας ὑμῶν ἀπὸ τῆς ἡμέρας ταύτης καὶ ὑπεράνω πρὸ τοῦ θεῖναι λίθον ἐπὶ λίθον ἐν τῷ ναῷ Κυρίου,

16 Since those days were, when one came to a heap of 20 measures, there were but ten: when one came to the wine vat to draw out 50 vessels out of the press, there were but 20.

מִהְיֹותָם בָּא אֶל ־ עֲרֵמַת עֶשְׂרִים וְהָיְתָה עֲשָׂרָה בָּא אֶל ־ הַיֶּקֶב לַחְשֹׂף חֲמִשִּׁים פּוּרָה וְהָיְתָה עֶשְׂרִים׃

16 τίνες ἦτε. ὅτε ἐνεβάλλετε εἰς κυψέλην κριθῆς εἴκοσι σάτα, καὶ ἐγένετο κριθῆς δέκα σάτα. καὶ εἰσεπορεύεσθε εἰς τὸ ὑπολήνιον ἐξαντλῆσαι πεντήκοντα μετρητάς, καὶ ἐγένοντο εἴκοσι.	16 τίνες ἦτε, ὅτε ἐνεβάλλετε εἰς κυψέλην κριθῆς εἴκοσι σάτα, καὶ ἐγένοντο κριθῆς δέκα σάτα· καὶ εἰσεπορεύεσθε εἰς τὸ ὑπολήνιον ἐξαντλῆσαι πεντήκοντα μετρητάς, καὶ ἐγένοντο εἴκοσι.
16 Who you were, when you threw into the grain barrel 20 measures of barley but there was 10 measures of barley. 17 I smote you with blasting and with mildew and with hail in all the labours of your hands; yet you didn’t turn to me, says Yahweh.

הִכֵּיתִי אֶתְכֶם בַּשִּׁדָּפֹון וּבַיֵּרָקֹון וּבַבָּרָד אֵת כָּל ־ מַעֲשֵׂה יְדֵיכֶם וְאֵין ־ אֶתְכֶם אֵלַי נְאֻם ־ יְהוָה׃

17 ἐπάταξα ὑμᾶς ἐν ἀφορίᾳ καὶ ἐν ἀνεμοφθορίᾳ καὶ ἐν χαλάζῃ πάντα τὰ ἔργα τῶν χειρῶν ὑμῶν, καὶ οὐκ ἐπεστρέψατε πρός με, λέγει κύριος.	17 ἐπάταξα ὑμᾶς ἐν ἀφορίᾳ καὶ ἐν ἀνεμοφθορίᾳ καὶ ἐν χαλάζῃ πάντα τὰ ἔργα τῶν χειρῶν ὑμῶν, καὶ οὐκ ἐπεστρέψατε πρός με, λέγει Κύριος.

18 Consider now from this day and upward, from the 24th day of the ninth month, even from the day that the foundation of Yahweh’s temple was laid, consider it.

שִׂימוּ ־ נָא לְבַבְכֶם מִן ־ הַיֹּום הַזֶּה וָמָעְלָה מִיֹּום עֶשְׂרִים וְאַרְבָּעָה לַתְּשִׁיעִי לְמִן ־ הַיֹּום אֲשֶׁר ־ יֻסַּד הֵיכַל ־ יְהוָה שִׂימוּ לְבַבְכֶם׃
