Jacōb Leaves Secretly for Canaan
1 And he heard the words of Laban’s sons, saying, “Jacōb has taken away all that was our father’s; and of what was our father’s has he gotten all this glory.”
1 And Jacōb heard the words of the sons of Laban, saying, “Jacōb has taken all that was our father’s, and he has made all this glory out of what was our father’s.” | 1 And Jacōb heard the words of the sons of Laban, saying, “Jacōb has taken all that was our father’s, and he has made all this glory out of what was our father’s.” |
2 And Jacōb beheld the countenance of Laban, and, behold, it wasn’t toward him as before.
2 And Jacōb saw the face of Laban, and behold it wasn’t toward him as yesterday or the third day. | 2 And Jacōb saw the face of Laban, and behold it wasn’t toward him as yesterday or the third day. |
3 And Yahweh said to Jacōb, “Return to the land of your fathers, and to your kindred; and I will be with you.”
3 And the Lord said to Jacōb, “Return to the land of your father, and to your family, and I will be with you.” | 3 And the Lord said to Jacōb, “Return to the land of your father, and to your family, and I will be with you.” |
4 And Jacōb sent and called Rachel and Leah to the field to his flock,
4 And Jacōb sent and called Leia and Rachēl to the plain where the flocks were. | 4 And Jacōb sent and called Leia and Rachēl to the plain where the flocks were. |
5 And said to them, “I see your father’s countenance, that it is not toward me as before; but the God of my father has been with me.
5 And he said to them, “I see the face of your father, that it is not toward me as yesterday or the third day, but the God of my father was with me. | 5 And he said to them, “I see the face of your father, that it is not toward me as yesterday or the third day, but the God of my father was with me. |
6 And you know that with all my power I have served your father.
6 And you also know that I have served your father with all my might. | 6 And you also know that I have served your father with all my might. |
7 And your father has deceived me, and changed my wages ten times; but God suffered him not to hurt me.
7 But your father cheated me, and changed my wages for the ten lambs, and God didn’t give him opportunity [1] to hurt me. | 7 But your father cheated me, and changed my wages for the ten lambs, and God didn’t give him opportunity [1] to hurt me. |
8 If he said thus, ‘The speckled shall be your wages’; then all the cattle gave birth to speckled; and if he said thus, ‘The ringstraked shall be your hire’; then all the cattle gave birth ringstraked.
8 If he should say thus, ‛The speckled shall be your pay,’ then all the cattle would give birth to speckled; and if he should say, ‛The white shall be your pay,’ then all the cattle would give birth to white. | 8 If he should say thus, ‛The speckled shall be your pay,’ then all the cattle would give birth to speckled; and if he should say, ‛The white shall be your pay,’ then all the cattle would give birth to white. |
9 Thus God has taken away the cattle of your father, and given them to me.
9 So God took away all the cattle of your father, and gave them to me. | 9 So God took away all the cattle of your father, and gave them to me. |
10 And it happened at the time that the cattle conceived, that I lifted up my eyes, and saw in a dream, and, behold, the rams which leaped on the cattle were ringstraked, speckled, and grisled.
10 And it happened when the cattle were in heat and I saw them with my eyes in sleep, and look! the male goats and the rams (partly white and variegated and ash-specled) are mounting the sheep and the she-goats. | 10 And it happened when the cattle were in heat and I saw them with my eyes in sleep, and look! the male goats and the rams (partly white and variegated and ash-specled) are mounting the sheep and the she-goats. |
11 And the angel of God spoke to me in a dream, saying, ‘Jacōb!’ And I said, ‘Here am I.’
11 And the angel of God said to me in a dream, ‛Jacōb’ And I said, ‛What is it?’ | 11 And the angel of God said to me in a dream, ‛Jacōb’ And I said, ‛What is it?’ |
12 And he said, ‘Lift up now your eyes, and see, all the rams which leap on the cattle are ringstraked, speckled, and grisled; for I have seen all that Laban does to you.
12 And he said, ‛Look up with your eyes, and see the male goats and the rams (partly white and variegated and ash speckled) mounting the sheep and the she-goats; for I have seen how much Laban is doing to you. | 12 And he said, ‛Look up with your eyes, and see the male goats and the rams (partly white and variegated and ash speckled) mounting the sheep and the she-goats; for I have seen how much Laban is doing to you. |
13 I am the God of Bethel, where you anointed the pillar, and where you vowed a vow to me: now arise, get you out from this land, and return to the land of your kindred.’ ”
13 I am the God who appeared to you in the place of God where you anointed a pillar there and vowed a vow to me there; now therefore arise and go out of this land, depart into the land of your origin, and I will be with you.’ ” | 13 I am the God who appeared to you in the place of God where you anointed a pillar there and vowed a vow to me there; now therefore arise and go out of this land, depart into the land of your origin, and I will be with you.’ ” |
14 And Rachel and Leah answered and said to him, “Is there yet any portion or inheritance for us in our father’s house?
14 And Rachel and Leia answered and said to him, “Is there not still a part or inheritance in our father’s home? | 14 And Rachel and Leia answered and said to him, “Is there not still a part or inheritance in our father’s home? |
15 Are we not counted of him strangers? For he has sold us, and has completely devoured also our money.

16 All the riches and the glory which God took from our father, it shall be for us and our children; now therefore do whatever God has said to you.” | 16 All the riches and the glory which God took from our father, it shall be for us and our children; now therefore do whatever God has said to you.” |
17 Then Jacōb rose up, and set his sons and his wives on camels;
17 Then after Jacōb arose, he took his wives and his children on the camels; | 17 Then after Jacōb arose, he took his wives and his children on the camels; |
18 And he carried away all his cattle, and all his goods which he had gotten, the cattle of his getting, which he had gotten in Padan-aram, for to go to Isaac his father in the land of Canaan.
18 and he carried away all his possessions and all his belongings, which he acquired in Mesopotamia, and all his things, to depart to Isaac his father in Chanaan-land. | 18 and he carried away all his possessions and all his belongings, which he acquired in Mesopotamia, and all his things, to depart to Isaac his father in Chanaan-land. |
19 And Laban went to shear his sheep; and Rachel had stolen the images that were her father’s.
19 And Laban departed to shear his sheep; but Rhachēl stole her father’s idols. | 19 And Laban departed to shear his sheep; but Rhachēl stole her father’s idols. |
20 And Jacōb stole away unawares to Laban the Syrian, in that he told him not that he fled.
20 And Jacōb concealed his plan [2] from Laban the Syrian, so as not to tell him that he is running away. | 20 And Jacōb concealed his plan [2] from Laban the Syrian, so as not to tell him that he is running away. |
21 So he fled with all that he had; and he rose up, and passed over the river, and set his face toward the mount Gilead.
21 And he escaped with all his things, and crossed over the river, and went to the mountain of Galaad. | 21 And he escaped with all his things, and crossed over the river, and went to the mountain of Galaad. |
Laban Pursues Jacōb
22 And it was told Laban on the third day that Jacōb was fled.
22 On the third day, Laban the Syrian was told that Jacōb escaped. | 22 Laban the Syrian was told that Jacōb escaped. |
23 And he took his brothers with him, and pursued after him seven days’ journey; and they overtook him in the mount Gilead.
23 After he took all his brothers with him, he pursued after him seven days’ journey, and overtook him on the mountain of Galaad. | 23 After he took all his brothers with him, he pursued after him seven days’ journey, and overtook him on the mountain of Galaad. |
24 And God came to Laban the Syrian in a dream by night, and said to him, “Take heed that you don’t speak to Jacōb either good or bad.”
24 But God came to Laban the Syrian in sleep at night, and said to him, “Watch yourself that you don’t speak evil with Jacōb.” | 24 But God came to Laban the Syrian in sleep at night, and said to him, “Watch yourself that you don’t speak evil with Jacōb.” |
25 Then Laban overtook Jacōb. Now Jacōb had set up his tent in the mount; and Laban with his brothers camped in the mount of Gilead.
25 And Laban overtook Jacōb; and Jacōb set up his tent on the mountain; and Laban stationed his brothers on the mountain Galaad. | 25 And Laban overtook Jacōb; and Jacōb set up his tent on the mountain; and Laban stationed his brothers on the mountain Galaad. |
26 And Laban said to Jacōb, “What have you done, that you have stolen away unawares to me, and carried away my daughters, as captives taken with the sword?

27 Why did you flee away secretly, and steal away from me; and didn’t tell me, that I might have sent you away with mirth, and with songs, with tabret, and with harp?

29 It is in the power of my hand to do you hurt; but the God of your father spoke to me last night, saying, ‘Take heed that you don’t speak to Jacōb either good or bad.’

30 And now, though you would must be gone, because you greatly long for your father’s house, yet why have you stolen my gods?”
30 Now therefore go, for with desire, you desired to depart for the house of your father. Why have you stolen my gods?” | 30 Now therefore go, for with desire, you desired to depart for the house of your father. Why have you stolen my gods?” |
31 And Jacōb answered and said to Laban, “Because I was afraid; for I said, ‘Perhaps you would take by force your daughters from me.’
31 And Jacōb answered and said to Laban, “for I said, ‛Lest you take away your daughters from me, and all my things.’ | 31 And Jacōb answered and said to Laban, “Because I was afraid; for I said, ‛Lest you take away your daughters from me, and all my things.’ |
32 With whomever you find your gods, let him not live: before our brothers discern what is yours with me, and take it to you.” For Jacōb didn’t know that Rachel had stolen them.
