David Learns of Saul’s Death

1 Now it came to be after the death of Saul, when David was returned from the slaughter of the Amalēkites, and David had abode two days in Ziklag;

1 And it happened, after Saoul died, that David returned from striking Amalek, and David settled two days in Sekelak. 1 And it happened, after Saoul died, that David returned from striking Amalek, and David settled two days in Sekelak.

2 It came even to pass on the third day, that, behold, a man came out of the camp from Saul with his clothes rent, and earth on his head; and so it was, when he came to David, that he fell to the earth, and did obeisance.

2 And it happened on the third day, and look! a man came from the camp of the people of Saoul, and his clothes were torn, and earth was on his head. And it happened, when he came in to David, that he fell to the ground and did obeisance to him. 2 And it happened on the third day, and look! a man came from the camp of the people of Saoul, and his clothes were torn, and earth was on his head. And it happened, when he came in to David, that he fell to the ground and did obeisance to him.

3 And David said to him, “From where did you come?” And he said to him, “I have escaped out of the camp of Israēl.”

3 καὶ εἶπεν αὐτῷ Δαυὶδ Πόθεν σὺ παραγίνῃ;
3 καὶ εἶπε αὐτῷ Δαυίδ· πόθεν σὺ παραγίνῃ;
3 And David said to him, “Where have you come from?” And he said to him, “I have come safe from the camp of Israēl.” 3 And David said to him, “Where have you come from?” And he said to him, “I have come safe from the camp of Israēl.”

4 And David said to him, “How went the matter? please, tell me.” And he answered, “The people have fled from the battle, and many of the people also have fallen and died; and Saul and Jonathan his son are dead also.”

4 καὶ εἶπεν αὐτῷ Δαυὶδ Τίς λόγος οὗτος;
4 καὶ εἶπε αὐτῷ Δαυίδ· τίς λόγος οὗτος;
4 And David said to him, “What is this word? Tell me!” And he said, “The people fled from the battle, and many of the people have fallen and died, and Saoul died, and his son Jōnathan died.” 4 And David said to him, “What is this word? Tell me!” And he said, “The people fled from the battle, and many of the people have fallen and died, and Saoul died, and his son Jōnathan died.”

5 And David said to the young man who told him, “How do you know that Saul and Jonathan his son are dead?”

5 καὶ εἶπεν Δαυὶδ τῷ παιδαρίῳ τῷ ἀπαγγέλλοντι αὐτῷ Πῶς οἶδας ὅτι τέθνηκεν Σαοὺλ καὶ Ἰωνάθαν υἱὸς αὐτοῦ; 5 καὶ εἶπε Δαυὶδ τῷ παιδαρίῳ τῷ ἀπαγγέλλοντι αὐτῷ· πῶς οἶδας ὅτι τέθνηκε Σαοὺλ καὶ Ἰωνάθαν υἱὸς αὐτοῦ;
5 And David said to the youth who was telling him, “How do you know that Saoul and his son Jōnathan died?” 5 And David said to the youth who was telling him, “How do you know that Saoul and his son Jōnathan died?”

6 And the young man who told him said, “As I happened by chance on mount Gilboa, behold, Saul leaned on his spear; and, lo, the chariots and horsemen followed hard after him.

6 And the youth who was telling him said, “By chance I had an encounter on Mount Gelboue, and look! Saoul was supported by his spear, and look! the chariots and the horse captains drew close to him. 6 And the youth who was telling him said, “By chance I had an encounter on Mount Gelboue, and look! Saoul was supported by his spear, and look! the chariots and the horse captains drew close to him.

7 And when he looked behind him, he saw me, and called to me. And I answered, ‘Here am I.’

7 And he looked on the things behind him and saw me and called me, and I said, ‘Look! here am I.’ 7 And he looked on the things behind him and saw me and called me, and I said, ‘Look! here am I.’

8 And he said to me, ‘Who are you?’ And I answered him, ‘I am an Amalēkite.’

8 καὶ εἶπέν μοι Τίς εἶ σύ;
8 καὶ εἶπέ μοι· τίς εἶ σύ;
8 And he said to me, ‘Who are you?’ And I said ‘I am an Amalēkite.’ 8 And he said to me, ‘Who are you?’ And I said ‘I am an Amalēkite.’

9 And he said to me again, ‘Stand, please, on me, and slay me; for anguish is come on me, because my life is yet whole in me.’

9 And he said to me, ‘Please stand over me, and put me to death, because a terrible darkness has laid hold of me, for all my life is in me.’ 9 And he said to me, ‘Please stand over me, and put me to death, because a terrible darkness has laid hold of me, for all my life is in me.’

10 So I stood on him, and killed him, because I was sure that he couldn’t live after that he had fallen; and I took the crown that was on his head, and the bracelet that was on his arm, and have brought them here to my lord.”

10 And I stood over him and put him to death, for I knew that he could not live after he had fallen, and I took the crown that was on his head and the ornament that was on his arm, and I have brought them here to my master.” 10 And I stood over him and put him to death, for I knew that he could not live after he had fallen, and I took the crown that was on his head and the ornament that was on his arm, and I have brought them here to my master.”

11 Then David took hold on his clothes, and rent them; and likewise all the men who were with him.

11 And David seized his clothes and tore them, and all the men who were with him tore their clothes. 11 And David seized his clothes and tore them, and all the men who were with him tore their clothes.

12 And they mourned, and wept, and fasted until evening, for Saul, and for Jonathan his son, and for the people of Yahweh, and for the house of Israēl; because they had fallen by the sword.

12 And they beat themselves for grief and wept and fasted until evening for Saoul and for his son Jōnathan and for the people of Jouda and for the house of Israēl, because they were smitten with a sword. 12 And they beat themselves for grief and wept and fasted until evening for Saoul and for his son Jōnathan and for the people of Jouda and for the house of Israēl, because they were smitten with a sword.

13 And David said to the young man who told him, “From where have you come?” And he answered, “I am the son of a stranger, an Amalēkite.”

13 καὶ εἶπεν Δαυὶδ τῷ παιδαρίῳ τῷ ἀπαγγέλλοντι αὐτῷ Πόθεν εἶ σύ;
13 καὶ εἶπε Δαυὶδ τῷ παιδαρίῳ τῷ ἀπαγγέλλοντι αὐτῷ· πόθεν εἶ σύ;
13 And David said to the youth who had told him, “Where are you from?” And he said, “I am son of a man, a resident alien, an Amalēkite.” 13 And David said to the youth who had told him, “Where are you from?” And he said, “I am son of a man, a resident alien, an Amalēkite.”

14 And David said to him, “How were you not afraid to stretch forth your hand to destroy Yahweh’s anointed?”

14 καὶ εἶπεν αὐτῷ Δαυὶδ Πῶς οὐκ ἐφοβήθης ἐπενεγκεῖν χεῖρά σου διαφθεῖραι τὸν χριστὸν κυρίου; 14 καὶ εἶπε αὐτῷ Δαυίδ· πῶς οὐκ ἐφοβήθης ἐπενεγκεῖν χεῖρά σου διαφθεῖραι τὸν χριστὸν Κυρίου;
14 And David said to him, “How did you not fear to bring your hand to destroy the Lord’s anointed?” 14 And David said to him, “How did you not fear to bring your hand to destroy the Lord’s anointed?”

15 And David called one of the young men, and said, “Go near, and fall on him.” And he smote him that he died.

15 And David called one of his lads and said, “After drawing near, fall on him,” and he struck him down, and he died. 15 And David called one of his lads and said, “After drawing near, fall on him,” and he struck him down, and he died.

16 And David said to him, “Your blood be on your head; for your mouth has testified against you, saying, ‘I have slain Yahweh’s anointed.’ ”

16 And David said to him, “Your blood be on your head, for your mouth answered against you, saying, ‘I put to death the Lord’s anointed.’ ”. 16 And David said to him, “Your blood be on your head, for your mouth answered against you, saying, ‘I put to death the Lord’s anointed.’ ”.

David’s Dirge for Saul and Jonathan

17 And David lamented with this lamentation over Saul and over Jonathan his son.

17 And David lamented this lamentation over Saoul and over his son Jōnathan 17 And David lamented this lamentation over Saoul and over his son Jōnathan

18 (Also he told them to teach the children of Judah the use of the bow: behold, it is written in the book of Jasher.)

18 and said to teach the sons of Jouda–look! it is written in a book of the upright– 18 and said to teach the sons of Jouda–look! it is written in a book of the upright–

19 “The beauty of Israēl is slain on your high places: how are the mighty fallen!

19 Στήλωσον, Ἰσραήλ, ὑπὲρ τῶν τεθνηκότων ἐπὶ τὰ ὕψη σου τραυματιῶν· πῶς ἔπεσαν δυνατοί, 19 Στήλωσον, Ἰσραήλ, ὑπὲρ τῶν τεθνηκότων ἐπὶ τὰ ὕψη σου τραυματιῶν· πῶς ἔπεσαν δυνατοί;
19 Set up a monument, Oh Israēl, for the wounded that have died on your heights! How the mighty have fallen! 19 Set up a monument, Oh Israēl, for the wounded that have died on your heights! How the mighty have fallen!

20 Tell it not in Gath, publish it not in the streets of Askelon; lest the daughters of the Allophyles rejoice, lest the daughters of the uncircumcised triumph.

20 Tell it not in Geth, and proclaim it not in the exits of Askalōn, lest daughters of allophyles rejoice, lest daughters of the uncircumcised exult. 20 Tell it not in Geth, and proclaim it not in the exits of Askalōn, lest daughters of allophyles rejoice, lest daughters of the uncircumcised exult.

21 You mountains of Gilboa, let there be no dew, neither let there be rain, on you, nor fields of offerings; for there the shield of the mighty is vilely cast away, the shield of Saul, as though he had not been anointed with oil.

21 You mountains that are in Gelboue, let no dew descend, and let there be no rain on you or fields of first fruits! For there the shield of the mighty was treated with contempt; Saoul’s shield was not anointed with oil. 21 You mountains that are in Gelboue, let no dew descend, and let there be no rain on you or fields of first fruits! For there the shield of the mighty was treated with contempt; Saoul’s shield was not anointed with oil.

22 From the blood of the slain, from the fat of the mighty, the bow of Jonathan didn’t turn back, and the sword of Saul didn’t return empty.

22 From the blood of wounded, from the fat of mighty ones, Jōnathan’s bow didn’t return empty to the rear, and Saoul’s sword didn’t turn back empty. 22 From the blood of wounded, from the fat of mighty ones, Jōnathan’s bow didn’t return empty to the rear, and Saoul’s sword didn’t turn back empty.

23 Saul and Jonathan were lovely and pleasant in their lives, and in their death they were not divided: they were swifter than eagles, they were stronger than lions.

23 Saoul and Jōnathan, the beloved and lovely, not separated; suited in their life and in their death they were not separated; swift beyond eagles they were, and they had strength beyond lions. 23 Saoul and Jōnathan, the beloved and lovely, not separated; suited in their life and in their death they were not separated; swift beyond eagles they were, and they had strength beyond lions.

24 You daughters of Israēl, weep over Saul, who clothed you in scarlet, with other delights, who put on ornaments of gold on your apparel.

24 Oh daughters of Israēl, weep over Saoul, who clothed you with scarlet with your ornament, who brought gold ornament to your clothing. 24 Oh daughters of Israēl, weep over Saoul, who clothed you with scarlet with your ornament, who brought gold ornament to your clothing.

25 How are the mighty fallen in the midst of the battle! Oh Jonathan, you was slain in your high places.

25 How the mighty have fallen in the middle of the battle! Jōnathan, a casualty on your heights. 25 How the mighty have fallen in the middle of the battle! Jōnathan, a casualty on your heights.

26 I am distressed for you, my brother Jonathan: very pleasant have you been to me: your love to me was wonderful, passing the love of women.

26 I grieve for you, my brother Jōnathan; you were very beautiful to me; your love to me was wonderful, beyond women’s love. 26 I grieve for you, my brother Jōnathan; you were very beautiful to me; your love to me was wonderful, beyond women’s love.

27 How are the mighty fallen, and the weapons of war perished!”

27 πῶς ἔπεσαν δυνατοὶ καὶ ἀπώλοντο σκεύη πολεμικά. 27 πῶς ἔπεσαν δυνατοὶ καὶ ἀπώλοντο σκεύη πολεμικά;
27 How the mighty have fallen, and the weapons of war perished! 27 How the mighty have fallen, and the weapons of war perished!
