David Made King over Judah

1 And it came to be after this, that David inquired of Yahweh, saying, “Shall I go up into any of the cities of Judah?” And Yahweh said to him, “Go up.” And David said, “Where shall I go up?” And he said, “Unto Hebron.”

1 καὶ ἐγένετο μετὰ ταῦτα καὶ ἐπηρώτησεν Δαυὶδ ἐν κυρίῳ λέγων εἰ ἀναβῶ εἰς μίαν τῶν πόλεων Ἰούδα;
καὶ εἶπεν Δαυὶδ ποῦ ἀναβῶ;
1 Καὶ ἐγένετο μετὰ ταῦτα καὶ ἐπηρώτησε Δαυὶδ ἐν Κυρίῳ λέγων· εἰ ἀναβῶ εἰς μίαν τῶν πόλεων Ἰούδα;
καὶ εἶπε Δαυίδ· ποῦ ἀναβῶ;
1 And it happened after these things that David inquired by the Lord, saying, “Shall I go up into one of the cities of Jouda?” And the Lord said to him, “Go up.” And David said, “Where shall I go up?” And he said, “To Chebrōn.” 1 And it happened after these things that David inquired by the Lord, saying, “Shall I go up into one of the cities of Jouda?” And the Lord said to him, “Go up.” And David said, “Where shall I go up?” And he said, “To Chebrōn.”

2 So David went up to that place, and his two wives also, Ahinoam the Jezreelitess, and Abigail Nabal’s wife the Carmelite.

2 And David went up there to Chebrōn, and both his wives, Achinoom the Iezraēlite and Abigaia, the wife of Nabal the Carmelite, 2 And David went up there to Chebrōn, and both his wives, Achinoom the Iezraēlite and Abigaia, the wife of Nabal the Carmelite,

3 And David brought up his men who were with him, every man with his household; and they dwelt in the cities of Hebron.

3 and the men who were with him, each and his household, and they were dwelling in the cities of Chebrōn. 3 and the men who were with him, each and his household, and they were dwelling in the cities of Chebrōn.

4 And the men of Judah came, and there they anointed David king over the house of Judah. And they told David, saying, “That the men of Jabesh-gilead were they who buried Saul.”

4 And the men of Judea came, and there they anointed David to reign over the house of Jouda. And they told David, saying, “The men of Iabis of Galaaditis buried Saoul.” 4 And the men of Judea came, and there they anointed David to reign over the house of Jouda. And they told David, saying, “The men of Iabis of Galaaditis buried Saoul.”

5 And David sent messengers to the men of Jabesh-gilead, and said to them, “Blessed be you of Yahweh, that you have shown this kindness to your lord, even to Saul, and have buried him.

5 And David sent messengers to the leaders of Jabis of Galaaditis and said to them, “You are blessed to the Lord, because you have shown this mercy to your master, to Saoul the anointed of the Lord, and buried him and Jōnathan his son! 5 And David sent messengers to the leaders of Jabis of Galaaditis and said to them, “You are blessed to the Lord, because you have shown this mercy to your master, to Saoul the anointed of the Lord, and buried him and Jōnathan his son!

6 And now may Yahweh show kindness and truth to you; and I also will repay you this kindness, because you have done this thing.

6 And now may the Lord show mercy and truth to you! And indeed I will do these good things with you, because you have done this thing, 6 And now may the Lord show mercy and truth to you! And indeed I will do these good things with you, because you have done this thing,

7 Therefore now let your hands be strengthened, and be valiant; for your master Saul is dead, and also the house of Judah has anointed me king over them.”

7 and now let your hands be strong, and become mighty sons, for Saoul your master is dead, and indeed the house of Jouda has anointed me king over themselves.” 7 and now let your hands be strong, and become mighty sons, for Saoul your master is dead, and indeed the house of Jouda has anointed me king over themselves.”

Ish-bosheth Made King over Israēl

8 But Abner the son of Ner, captain of Saul’s army, took Ish-bosheth the son of Saul, and brought him over to Mahanaim;

8 And Abennēr son of Nēr went out, and the servants of Jebosthe son of Saoul, from Manaem, 8 And Abennēr son of Nēr went out, and the servants of Jebosthe son of Saoul, from Manaem,

9 And made him king over Gilead, and over the Ashurites, and over Jezreel, and over Ephraim, and over Benjamin, and over all Israēl.

9 and made him king over Galaaditis and over Thasiri and over Iezrael and over Ephraim and over Benjamin and over all Israēl. 9 and made him king over Galaaditis and over Thasiri and over Iezrael and over Ephraim and over Benjamin and over all Israēl.

10 Ish-bosheth Saul’s son was 40 years old when he began to reign over Israēl, and reigned two years. But the house of Judah followed David.

10 Iebosthe, Saoul’s son, was forty years old when he began to reign over Israēl, and he reigned two years, except over the house of Jouda who were behind David. 10 Iebosthe, Saoul’s son, was forty years old when he began to reign over Israēl, and he reigned two years, except over the house of Jouda who were behind David.

11 And the time that David was king in Hebron over the house of Judah was seven years and six months.

11 And the days that David was king in Chebrōn over the house of Jouda were seven years and six months. 11 And the days that David was king in Chebrōn over the house of Jouda were seven years and six months.

Civil War

12 And Abner the son of Ner, and the servants of Ish-bosheth the son of Saul, went out from Mahanaim to Gibeon.

12 And Abennēr son of Nēr went out, and the servants of Jebosthe son of Saoul, from Manaem to Gabaōn, 12 And Abennēr son of Nēr went out, and the servants of Jebosthe son of Saoul, from Manaem to Gabaōn,

13 And Jōab the son of Zeruiah, and the servants of David, went out, and met together by the pool of Gibeon; and they sat down, the one on the one side of the pool, and the other on the other side of the pool.

13 and Jōab son of Sarouia and the servants of David went out from Chebrōn and met them at the well of Gabaōn at the same place and they sat, these at the well of Gabaōn here and these at the well there. 13 and Jōab son of Sarouia and the servants of David went out from Chebrōn and met them at the well of Gabaōn at the same place and they sat, these at the well of Gabaōn here and these at the well there.

14 And Abner said to Jōab, “Let the young men now arise, and play before us.” And Jōab said, “Let them arise.”

14 And Abennēr said to Jōab, “Please let the youths arise and have a game before us,” and Jōab said, “Let them arise.” 14 And Abennēr said to Jōab, “Please let the youths arise and have a game before us,” and Jōab said, “Let them arise.”

15 Then they arose and went over by number twelve of Benjamin, which pertained to Ish-bosheth the son of Saul, and twelve of the servants of David.

15 And they arose and passed by, to the number of twelve of the servants of Benjamin, those of Jebosthe son of Saoul, and twelve of the servants of David. 15 And they arose and passed by, to the number of twelve of the servants of Benjamin, those of Jebosthe son of Saoul, and twelve of the servants of David.

16 And they caught everyone his fellow by the head, and thrust his sword in his fellow’s side; so they fell down together; therefore that place was called Helkath-hazzurim, which is in Gibeon.

16 And they held each with his hand on the head of his neighbour, and his dagger to the side of his neighbour, and they fell down together, and the name of that place was called the Portion of the Schemers, which is at Gabaōn. 16 And they held each with his hand on the head of his neighbour, and his dagger to the side of his neighbour, and they fell down together, and the name of that place was called the Portion of the Schemers, which is at Gabaōn.

17 And there was a very sore battle that day; and Abner was beaten, and the men of Israēl, before the servants of David.

17 And the battle was very hard in that day, and Abennēr stumbled, and the men of Israēl, before the servants of David. 17 And the battle was very hard in that day, and Abennēr stumbled, and the men of Israēl, before the servants of David.

18 And there were three sons of Zeruiah there, Jōab, and Abishai, and Asahel; and Asahel was as light of foot as a wild roe.

18 And three sons of Sarouia were there, Jōab and Abessa and Asaēl, and Asaēl was as swift on his feet as one gazelle in a field. 18 And three sons of Sarouia were there, Jōab and Abessa and Asaēl, and Asaēl was as swift on his feet as one gazelle in a field.

19 And Asahel pursued after Abner; and in going he didn’t turn to the right hand nor to the left from following Abner.

19 And Asaēl pursued after Abennēr and didn’t turn to go to the right or to the left behind Abennēr. 19 And Asaēl pursued after Abennēr and didn’t turn to go to the right or to the left behind Abennēr.

20 Then Abner looked behind him, and said, “Are you Asahel?” And he answered, “I am.”

20 καὶ ἐπέβλεψεν Ἀβεννὴρ εἰς τὰ ὀπίσω αὐτοῦ καὶ εἶπεν εἰ σὺ εἶ αὐτὸς Ἀσαήλ;
20 καὶ ἐπέβλεψεν Ἀβεννὴρ εἰς τὰ ὀπίσω αὐτοῦ καὶ εἶπε· εἰ σὺ εἶ αὐτὸς Ἀσαήλ;
20 And Abennēr looked behind him and said, “Are you Asaēl himself?” And he answered, “I am.” 20 And Abennēr looked behind him and said, “Are you Asaēl himself?” And he answered, “I am.”

21 And Abner said to him, “Turn aside to your right hand or to your left, and lay hold on one of the young men, and take his armour.” But Asahel would not turn aside from following him.

21 And Abennēr said to him, “Turn to the right or to the left, and seize for yourself one of the youths, and take his armour for yourself,” and Asaēl didn’t want to turn aside from behind him. 21 And Abennēr said to him, “Turn to the right or to the left, and seize for yourself one of the youths, and take his armour for yourself,” and Asaēl didn’t want to turn aside from behind him.

22 And Abner said again to Asahel, “Turn you aside from following me: why should I smite you to the ground? How then should I hold up my face to Jōab your brother?”

22 καὶ προσέθετο ἔτι Ἀβεννὴρ λέγων τῷ Ἀσαὴλ ἀπόστηθι ἀπ’ ἐμοῦ, ἵνα μὴ πατάξω σὲ εἰς τὴν γῆν· καὶ πῶς ἀρῶ τὸ πρόσωπόν μου πρὸς Ἰωάβ;
καὶ ποῦ ἐστιν ταῦτα;
22 καὶ προσέθετο ἔτι Ἀβεννὴρ λέγων τῷ Ἀσαήλ· ἀπόστηθι ἀπ’ ἐμοῦ, ἵνα μὴ πατάξω σε εἰς τὴν γῆν· καὶ πῶς ἀρῶ τὸ πρόσωπόν μου πρὸς Ἰωάβ;
22 And Abennēr continued again, saying to Asaēl, “Withdraw from me, lest I strike you to the ground, and how then could I lift up my face to Jōab? And where are these things? Return to your brother Jōab.” 22 And Abennēr continued again, saying to Asaēl, “Withdraw from me, lest I strike you to the ground, and how then could I lift up my face to Jōab? And where are these things? Return to your brother Jōab.”

23 However he refused to turn aside; therefore Abner with the hinder end of the spear smote him under the fifth rib, that the spear came out behind him; and he fell down there, and died in the same place; and it happened, that as many as came to the place where Asahel fell down and died stood still.

23 καὶ ποῦ ἔστι ταῦτα;
23 But he was not willing to withdraw. And Abennēr struck him in the loins with the butt of his spear, and the spear went out behind him, and he fell there and died under him. And it happened, each one who came to the place, where Asaēl fell and died there, and he stood still. 23 And what does this mean? return to Jōab your brother? But he was not willing to withdraw. And Abennēr struck him in the loins with the butt of his spear, and the spear went out behind him, and he fell there and died under him. And it happened, each one who came to the place, where Asaēl fell and died there, and he stood still.

24 Jōab and Abishai pursued after Abner; and the sun went down when they came to the hill of Ammah, that lies before Giah by the way of the wilderness of Gibeon.

24 And Jōab and Abessa pursued after Abennēr, and the sun was going down, and they came to the hill of Amman, which is facing Gai on the way to the wilderness of Gabaōn. 24 And Jōab and Abessa pursued after Abennēr, and the sun was going down, and they came to the hill of Amman, which is facing Gai on the way to the wilderness of Gabaōn.

25 And the children of Benjamin gathered themselves together after Abner, and became one troop, and stood on the top of a hill.

25 And the sons of Benjamin who were behind Abennēr gathered themselves together and formed one band, and they stood on the top of one hill. 25 And the sons of Benjamin who were behind Abennēr gathered themselves together and formed one band, and they stood on the top of one hill.

26 Then Abner called to Jōab, and said, “Shall the sword devour forever? don’t you know that it will be bitterness in the latter end? how long shall it be then, ere you bid the people return from following their brothers?”

26 καὶ ἐκάλεσεν Ἀβεννὴρ Ἰωὰβ καὶ εἶπεν μὴ εἰς νῖκος καταφάγεται ῥομφαία;
οὐκ οἶδας ὅτι πικρὰ ἔσται εἰς τὰ ἔσχατα;
καὶ ἕως πότε οὐ μὴ εἴπῃς τῷ λαῷ ἀναστρέφειν ἀπὸ ὄπισθεν τῶν ἀδελφῶν ἡμῶν;
26 καὶ ἐκάλεσεν Ἀβεννὴρ Ἰωὰβ καὶ εἶπε· μὴ εἰς νῖκος καταφάγεται ῥομφαία;
οὐκ οἶδας ὅτι πικρὰ ἔσται εἰς τὰ ἔσχατα;
καὶ ἕως πότε οὐ μὴ εἴπῃς τῷ λαῷ ἀποστρέφειν ἀπὸ ὄπισθεν τῶν ἀδελφῶν ἡμῶν;
26 And Abennēr called Jōab and said, “The sword will not devour to victory, will it? Don’t you know that in the end it will be bitter? And how long will you not say to the people to turn from after our brothers?” 26 And Abennēr called Jōab and said, “The sword will not devour to victory, will it? Don’t you know that in the end it will be bitter? And how long will you not say to the people to turn from after our brothers?”

27 And Jōab said, “As God lives, unless you had spoken, surely then in the morning the people had gone up everyone from following his brother.”
