The House of David Strengthened
1 Now there was long war between the house of Saul and the house of David; but David grew stronger and stronger, and the house of Saul grew weaker and weaker.

Abner Joins David
6 And it came to be, while there was war between the house of Saul and the house of David, that Abner made himself strong for the house of Saul.
6 And it happened, while there was war between the house of Saoul and between the house of David, that Abennēr was prevailing over the house of Saoul. | 6 And it happened, while there was war between the house of Saoul and between the house of David, that Abennēr was prevailing over the house of Saoul. |
7 And Saul had a concubine, whose name was Rizpah, the daughter of Aiah; and Ish-bosheth said to Abner, “Why have you gone in to my father’s concubine?”

8 Then was Abner very wroth for the words of Ish-bosheth, and said, “Am I a dog’s head, which against Judah do show kindness this day to the house of Saul your father, to his brothers, and to his friends, and haven’t delivered you into the hand of David, that you charge me today with a fault concerning this woman?

8 And Abennēr was very angry concerning the word of Memphibosthe, and Abennēr said to him, “I am not a dog’s head, am I? Today I showed mercy to the house of your father Saoul both concerning brothers and acquaintances, and I didn’t desert to the house of David, and do you question me today concerning an injustice of a woman? | 8 And Abennēr was very angry concerning the word of Jebosthe, and Abennēr said to him, “I am not a dog’s head, am I? Today I showed mercy to the house of your father Saoul both concerning brothers and acquaintances, and I didn’t desert to the house of David, and do you question me today concerning an injustice of a woman? |
9 So do God to Abner, and more also, except, as Yahweh has sworn to David, even so I do to him;
9 This is what God may do to Abennēr, and this is what he may add to it, for just as what the Lord swore to David, for thus will I do for him on this day, | 9 This is what God may do to Abennēr, and this is what he may add to it, for just as what the Lord swore to David, for thus will I do for him on this day, |
10 To translate the kingdom from the house of Saul, and to set up the throne of David over Israēl and over Judah, from Dan even to Beer-sheba.”
10 to take the kingdom from the house of Saoul and set up the throne of David over Israēl and over Jouda, from Dan to Bērsabee.” | 10 to take the kingdom from the house of Saoul and set up the throne of David over Israēl and over Jouda, from Dan to Bērsabee.” |
11 And he couldn’t answer Abner a word again, because he feared him.
11 And Memphibosthe was no longer able to answer Abennēr a word, from his being afraid of him. | 11 And Memphibosthe was no longer able to answer Abennēr a word, from his being afraid of him. |
12 And Abner sent messengers to David on his behalf, saying, “Whose is the land?” saying also, “Make your league with me, and, behold, my hand shall be with you, to bring about all Israēl to you.”
12 And Abennēr sent messengers to David at Thailam, where he was, immediately, saying, “Make your covenant with me, and look! my hand is with you to return all the house of Israēl to you.” | 12 And Abennēr sent messengers to David at Thailam, where he was, immediately, saying, “Make your covenant with me, and look! my hand is with you to return all the house of Israēl to you.” |
13 And he said, “Well; I will make a league with you; but one thing I require of you, that is, you shall not see my face, except you first bring Michal Saul’s daughter, when you come to see my face.”
13 And David said, “Well, I will make a covenant with you, but one thing I ask of you, saying: ‘You shall never see my face unless you bring Saoul’s daughter Melchol when you come to see my face.’ ” | 13 And David said, “Well, I will make a covenant with you, but one thing I ask of you, saying: ‘You shall never see my face unless you bring Saoul’s daughter Melchol when you come to see my face.’ ” |
14 And David sent messengers to Ish-bosheth Saul’s son, saying, “Deliver me my wife Michal, which I espoused to me for 100 foreskins of the Allophyles.”
14 And David sent messengers to Saoul’s son Memphibosthe, saying, “Deliver my wife Melchol to me whom I took for 100 foreskins of allophyles.” | 14 And David sent messengers to Saoul’s son Memphibosthe, saying, “Deliver my wife Melchol to me whom I took for 100 foreskins of allophyles.” |
15 And Ish-bosheth sent, and took her from her husband, even from Phaltiel the son of Laish.
15 And Memphibosthe sent and took her from her husband, from Phaltiēl son of Sellēs. | 15 And Memphibosthe sent and took her from her husband, from Phaltiēl son of Sellēs. |
16 And her husband went with her along weeping behind her to Bahurim. Then said Abner to him, “Go, return.” And he returned.
16 And her husband went with her, weeping behind her until Barakim, and Abennēr said to him, “Go, return,” and he returned. | 16 And her husband went with her, weeping behind her until Barakim, and Abennēr said to him, “Go, return,” and he returned. |
17 And Abner had communication with the elders of Israēl, saying, “You sought for David in times past to be king over you.
17 And Abennēr said to the elders of Israēl, saying, “Yesterday and the third day you were seeking David to rule over you, | 17 And Abennēr said to the elders of Israēl, saying, “Yesterday and the third day you were seeking David to rule over you, |
18 Now then do it; for Yahweh has spoken of David, saying, ‘By the hand of my servant David I will save my people Israēl out of the hand of the Allophyles, and out of the hand of all their enemies.’ ”
18 and now do it, for the Lord spoke concerning David, saying: ‘By the hand of my subject David I will save Israēl from the hand of allophyles and from the hand of all their enemies.’ ” | 18 and now do it, for the Lord spoke concerning David, saying: ‘By the hand of my subject David I will save Israēl from the hand of allophyles and from the hand of all their enemies.’ ” |
19 And Abner also spoke in the ears of Benjamin; and Abner went also to speak in the ears of David in Hebron all that seemed good to Israēl, and that seemed good to the whole house of Benjamin.

22 And, Behold, the servants of David and Jōab came from pursuing a troop, and brought in a great spoil with them; but Abner wasn’t with David in Hebron; for he had sent him away, and he was gone in peace.

26 And Jōab returned from David and sent messengers after Abennēr, and they brought him back from the well of Seiram, and David didn’t know. | 26 And Jōab returned from David and sent messengers after Abennēr, and they brought him back from the well of Seeiram, and David didn’t know. |
27 And when Abner was returned to Hebron, Jōab took him aside in the gate to speak with him quietly, and smote him there under the fifth rib, that he died, for the blood of Asahel his brother.

28 And afterward when David heard it, he said, “I and my kingdom are guiltless before Yahweh forever from the blood of Abner the son of Ner.
28 And after these things David heard and said, “I am innocent, I and my kingdom from the Lord forever for the blood of Abennēr son of Nēr; | 28 And after these things David heard and said, “I am innocent, I and my kingdom from the Lord forever for the blood of Abennēr son of Nēr; |
29 Let it rest on the head of Jōab, and on all his father’s house; and let there not fail from the house of Jōab one that has an issue, or that is a leper, or that leans on a staff, or that falls on the sword, or that lacks bread.”
29 let it fall on the head of Jōab and on all his father’s house, and may the house of Jōab never fail to have someone with gonorrhea and leprosy and who holds a club and who falls by the sword or who lacks food!” | 29 let it fall on the head of Jōab and on all his father’s house, and may the house of Jōab never fail to have someone with gonorrhea and leprosy and who holds a club and who falls by the sword or who lacks food!” |
30 So Jōab and Abishai his brother killed Abner, because he had slain their brother Asahel at Gibeon in the battle.
30 But Jōab and his brother Abessa lay in wait for Abennēr, because he had put to death their brother Asaēl in the battle at Gabaōn. | 30 But Jōab and his brother Abessa lay in wait for Abennēr, because he had put to death their brother Asaēl in the battle at Gabaōn. |
David Mourns Abner
31 And David said to Jōab, and to all the people who were with him, “Rend your clothes, and gird you with sackcloth, and mourn before Abner.” And king David himself followed the bier.

32 And they buried Abner in Hebron; and the king lifted up his voice, and wept at the grave of Abner; and all the people wept.

33 And the king lamented over Abner, and said, “Died Abner as a fool dies?

34 Your hands were not bound, nor your feet put into fetters: as a man falls before wicked men, so fell you.” And all the people wept again over him.

34 Your hands were not bound; your feet were not in shackles; he didn’t bring, like Nabal; before sons of injustice you fell.” And all the people gathered to weep over him. | 34 Your hands were not bound; your feet were not in shackles; he didn’t bring, like Nabal; before sons of injustice you fell.” And all the people gathered to weep over him. |
35 And when all the people came to cause David to eat food while it was yet day, David swore, saying, “So do God to me, and more also, if I taste bread, or anything else, till the sun be down.”
35 And all the people came to make David eat a funeral meal with bread while it was still day, and David swore, saying, “This is what God may do to me, and this may he add, because, if the sun doesn’t set, I will not taste of bread, or from anything!” | 35 And all the people came to make David eat a funeral meal with bread while it was still day, and David swore, saying, “This is what God may do to me, and this may he add, because, if the sun doesn’t set, I will not taste of bread, or from anything!” |
36 And all the people took notice of it, and it pleased them: as whatever the king did pleased all the people.

37 For all the people and all Israēl understood that day that it wasn’t of the king to slay Abner the son of Ner.

38 And the king said to his servants, “Know you not that there is a prince and a great man fallen this day in Israēl?
