Salutation
Jacōb, a slave of God and of the Lord Jesus Christ, to the twelve tribes in the dispersion: Greetings. | Jacōb, a slave of God and of the Lord Jesus Christ, to the twelve tribes in the dispersion: Greetings. |
Faith and Wisdom
Consider it all joy, my brothers, when you encounter various trials, | Consider it all joy, my brothers, when you encounter various trials, |
knowing that the testing of your faith produces endurance. | knowing that the testing of your faith produces endurance. |
And let endurance have its mature result, so that you may be mature and complete, lacking in nothing. | And let endurance have its mature result, so that you may be mature and complete, lacking in nothing. |
But if any of you lacks wisdom, let him ask of God, who gives to all generously and without reproach, and it will be given to him. | But if any of you lacks wisdom, let him ask of God, who gives to all generously and without reproach, and it will be given to him. |
But let him ask in faith without any doubting, for the one who doubts is like the surge of a sea, wind-driven and tossed. | But let him ask in faith without any doubting, for the one who doubts is like the surge of a sea, wind-driven and tossed. |
For don’t let that man suppose that he will receive anything from the Lord, | For don’t let that man suppose that he will receive anything from the Lord, |
for a double-minded man, is unstable in all his ways. | for a double-minded man, is unstable in all his ways. |
Poverty and Riches
But let the brother of a humble life boast in his high position; | But let the brother of a humble life boast in his high position; |
and the rich man in his humiliation, because like a blossom of vegetation he will pass away. | and the rich man in his humiliation, because like a blossom of vegetation he will pass away. |
For the sun rises with heat and withers the vegetation; and its blossom falls off and the splendour of its appearance is destroyed; so too the rich man in his travels will fade away. | For the sun rises with heat and withers the vegetation; and its blossom falls off and the splendour of its appearance is destroyed; so too the rich man in his travels will fade away. |
Trial and Temptation
Blessed is a man who perseveres under a test; because once he has been approved, he will receive the victor’s wreath of life which is promised to the ones who love him. | Blessed is a man who perseveres under a test; because once he has been approved, he will receive the victor’s wreath of life which the Lord promised to the ones who love him. |
Let no one say when he is tempted, “I am being tempted by God”; for God is incapable of being tempted by evil, and he himself doesn’t tempt anyone. | Let no one say when he is tempted, “I am being tempted by God”; for God is incapable of being tempted by evil, and he himself doesn’t tempt anyone. |
But each one is tempted when he is carried away and enticed by his own lust. | But each one is tempted when he is carried away and enticed by his own lust. |
Then when lust has conceived, it gives birth to sin; and when sin is accomplished, it brings forth death. | Then when lust has conceived, it gives birth to sin; and when sin is accomplished, it brings forth death. |
Stop being deceived, my beloved brothers. | Stop being deceived, my beloved brothers. |
Every good gift given and every perfect gift is from above, coming down from the Father of lights, with whom there is no deception or changing shadow. | Every good gift given and every perfect gift is from above, coming down from the Father of lights, with whom there is no deception or changing shadow. |
After planning, he brought us forth by the word of truth, so that we would be a kind of first fruits among his creatures. | After planning, he brought us forth by the word of truth, so that we would be a kind of first fruits among his creatures. |
Hearing and Doing The Word
This you know, my beloved brothers. But let every man be quick to hear, slow to speak and slow to anger; | Therefore my beloved brothers, let every man be quick to hear, slow to speak and slow to anger; |
for the anger of a man doesn’t produce the righteousness of God. | for the anger of a man doesn’t produce the righteousness of God. |
Therefore, after removing all filthiness and abundance of wickedness, in humility receive the implanted word, which is able to heal your souls. | Therefore, after removing all filthiness and abundance of wickedness, in humility receive the implanted word, which is able to heal your souls. |
But become doers of the word, and not merely hearers who delude themselves. | But become doers of the word, and not merely hearers who delude themselves. |
For if anyone is a hearer of the word and not a doer, he is like a man who stares at his natural face in a mirror; | For if anyone is a hearer of the word and not a doer, he is like a man who stares at his natural face in a mirror; |
for he looked at himself and has gone away, then he immediately forgets what sort he was. | for he looked at himself and has gone away, then he immediately forgets what sort he was. |
But one who focuses on the perfect law, the law of liberty, and remains, not having become a negligent hearer but an practical doer, this one will be blessed in what he does. | But one who focuses on the perfect law, the law of liberty, and remains, not having become a negligent hearer but an practical doer, this one will be blessed in what he does. |
If anyone thinks he is religious, and yet doesn’t bridle his tongue but deceives his own heart, the religion of this man is worthless. | If anyone among you thinks he is religious, and yet doesn’t bridle his tongue but deceives his own heart, the religion of this man is worthless. |
Pure and unblemished religion before the God and Father is this: to care for orphans and widows in their trouble, and to keep oneself unblemished by the world. | Pure and unblemished religion before the God and Father is this: to care for orphans and widows in their trouble, and to keep oneself unblemished by the world. |
