Chapter 1

AlexandrinusVaticanus

Chaldeans Used to Punish Judah

1 The burden which Habakkuk the prophet did see.

1 The received message which the prophet Ambakoum saw. 1 The received message which the prophet Ambakoum saw.

2 Oh Yahweh, how long shall I cry, and you won’t hear! even cry out to you of violence, and you won’t save!

2 ἕως τίνος, κύριε κεκράξομαι καὶ οὐ μὴ εἰσακούσῃς βοήσομαι πρὸς σὲ ἀδικούμενος καὶ οὐ σώσεις; 2 Ἕως τίνος, Κύριε, κεκράξομαι καὶ οὐ μὴ εἰσακούσῃς;
βοήσομαι πρός σε ἀδικούμενος καὶ οὐ σώσεις;
2 How long, Oh Lord, shall I cry out, and you won’t listen? How long shall I cry out to you being injured, and you won’t save? 2 How long, Oh Lord, shall I cry out, and you won’t listen? How long shall I cry out to you being injured, and you won’t save?

3 Why do you show me iniquity, and cause me to behold grievance? For spoiling and violence are before me; and there are that raise up strife and contention.

3 ἵνα τί μοι ἔδειξας κόπους, καὶ πόνους ἐπιβλέπειν ταλαιπωρίαν καὶ ἀσέβειαν;
3 ἱνατί ἔδειξάς μοι κόπους καὶ πόνους, ἐπιβλέπειν ταλαιπωρίαν καὶ ἀσέβειαν;
3 Why did you show me troubles and labours, to look on misery and ungodliness? Judgment has come before me, and the judge is receiving. 3 Why did you show me troubles and labours, to look on misery and ungodliness? Judgment has come before me, and the judge is receiving.

4 Therefore the law is slacked, and judgment never goes forth; for the wicked surrounds about the righteous; therefore wrong judgment proceeds.

4 Therefore the law is thwarted, and judgment doesn’t accomplish its objective, because the ungodly man prevails over the just; for this reason, judgment will come out perverted. 4 Therefore the law is thwarted, and judgment doesn’t accomplish its objective, because the ungodly man prevails over the just; for this reason, judgment will come out perverted.

5 Behold you among the heathen, and regard, and wonder marvellously; for I will work a work in your days, which you won’t believe, though it be told you.

5 Look! you despisers, and observe, and marvel at marvellous things, and perish; because I am working a work in your days, which you wouldn’t believe if someone told it. 5 Look! you despisers, and observe, and marvel at marvellous things, and perish; because I am working a work in your days, which you wouldn’t believe if someone told it.

6 For, lo, I raise up the Chaldeans, that bitter and hasty nation, which shall march through the breadth of the land, to possess the dwelling-places that are not theirs.

6 Because, look! I am raising up the fighting Chaldeans against you, the bitter and swift nation, that goes on the breadth of the land, to possess dwellings not his own. 6 Because, look! I am raising up the fighting Chaldeans against you, the bitter and swift nation, that goes on the breadth of the land, to possess dwellings not his own.

7 They are terrible and dreadful; their judgment and their dignity shall proceed of themselves.

7 He is fearsome and famous; his judgment will be from himself, and his received message shall come out of himself. 7 He is fearsome and famous; his judgment will be from himself, and his received message shall come out of himself.

8 Their horses also are swifter than the leopards, and are more fierce than the evening wolves; and their horsemen shall spread themselves, and their horsemen shall come from far; they shall fly as the eagle that hurries to eat.

8 And his horses will leap beyond leopards, and they are swifter than the wolves of Arabia; and his horsemen shall ride out, and shall charge forward from a distance; and they shall fly like an eagle eager to eat. 8 And his horses will leap beyond leopards, and they are swifter than the wolves of Arabia; and his horsemen shall ride out, and shall charge forward from a distance; and they shall fly like an eagle eager to eat.

9 They shall come all for violence; their faces shall sup up as the east wind, and they shall gather the captivity as the sand.

9 Completion will come on impious men, resisting with their faces by opposition, and he will gather the captivity like the sand. 9 Completion will come on impious men, resisting with their faces by opposition, and he will gather the captivity like the sand.

10 And they shall scoff at the kings, and the princes shall be a scorn to them; they shall deride every strong hold; for they shall heap dust, and take it.

10 And he will scoff at kings, and tyrants will be his toys; and he will ridicule every fortress, and will throw up a mound, and take possession of it. 10 And he will scoff at kings, and tyrants will be his toys; and he will ridicule every fortress, and will throw up a mound, and take possession of it.

11 Then shall his mind change, and he shall pass over, and offend, imputing this his power to his god.

11 Then his spirit will change, and he will pass through, and make an atonement, This strength belongs to my God. 11 Then his spirit will change, and he will pass through, and make an atonement, This strength belongs to my God.

12 Are you not from everlasting, Oh Yahweh my Elohim, my Holy One? We shall not die. Oh Yahweh, you have ordained them for judgment; and, Oh mighty God, you have established them for correction.

12 οὐχὶ σὺ ἀπ’ ἀρχῆς, κύριε, θεὸς ἅγιός μου;
12 οὐχὶ σὺ ἀπ’ ἀρχῆς, Κύριε, Θεὸς ἅγιός μου;
12 Are not you from the beginning, Oh Lord my Holy God? and we will never die. Oh Lord, you have appointed him for judgment, and he has formed me to convict with his instruction. 12 Are not you from the beginning, Oh Lord my Holy God? and we will never die. Oh Lord, you have appointed him for judgment, and he has formed me to convict with his instruction.

13 You are of purer eyes than to behold evil, and cannot look on iniquity; therefore look you on those who deal treacherously, and hold your tongue when the wicked devours the man who is more righteous than he?

13 καθαρὸς ὀφθαλμὸς τοῦ μὴ ὁρᾶν πονηρά, καὶ ἐπιβλέπειν ἐπὶ πόνους οὐ δυνήσῃ· ἵνα τί ἐπιβλέπεις ἐπὶ καταφρονοῦντας;
παρασιωπήσῃ ἐν τῷ καταπίνειν ἀσεβῆ τὸν δίκαιον;
13 καθαρὸς ὀφθαλμὸς τοῦ μὴ ὁρᾶν πονηρά, καὶ ἐπιβλέπειν ἐπὶ πόνους οὐ δυνήσῃ· ἵνα τί ἐπιβλέπεις ἐπὶ καταφρονοῦντας;
παρασιωπήσῃ ἐν τῷ καταπίνειν ἀσεβῆ τὸν δίκαιον;
13 A pure eye is not for looking at evil things, and you won’t be able to look on suffering. Why do you look on those who despise? Will you be silent when the impious swallows up the just? 13 A pure eye is not for looking at evil things, and you won’t be able to look on suffering. Why do you look on those who despise? Will you be silent when the impious swallows up the just?

14 And make men as the fish of the sea, as the creeping things, that have no ruler over them?

14 καὶ ποιήσεις τοὺς ἀνθρώπους ὡς τοὺς ἰχθύας τῆς θαλάσσης καὶ ὡς τὰ ἑρπετὰ τὰ οὐκ ἔχοντα ἡγούμενον. 14 καὶ ποιήσεις τοὺς ἀνθρώπους ὡς τοὺς ἰχθύας τῆς θαλάσσης καὶ ὡς τὰ ἑρπετὰ τὰ οὐκ ἔχοντα ἡγούμενον;
14 And will you make mankind like the fish of the sea, and like the reptiles which have no leader? 14 And will you make mankind like the fish of the sea, and like the reptiles which have no leader?

15 They take up all of them with the angle, they catch them in their net, and gather them in their drag; therefore they rejoice and are glad.

15 He has brought up a conclusion with a hook, and dragged him with a fishing net, and gathered him in his trawl; therefore his heart will be glad and rejoice. 15 He has brought up a conclusion with a hook, and dragged him with a fishing net, and gathered him in his trawl;

16 Therefore they sacrifice to their net, and burn incense to their drag; because by them their portion is fat, and their food plenteous.

16 Therefore will he sacrifice to his trawl, and burn incense to his fishing-net, because by them he has made his portion fat, and his foods select. 16 therefore his heart will be glad and rejoice. Therefore will he sacrifice to his trawl, and burn incense to his fishing-net, because by them he has made his portion fat, and his foods select.

17 Shall they therefore empty their net, and not spare continually to slay the nations?

17 Therefore will he cast his fishing-net, and won’t ever spare to kill the nations. 17 Therefore will he cast his fishing-net, and won’t ever spare to kill the nations.
