God Answers the Prophet
1 I will stand on my watch, and set me on the tower, and will watch to see what he will say to me, and what I shall answer when I am reproved.
1 I will stand on my guardpost, and go on the rock, and look away to see what he will say to me, and what I should answer to my reproof. | 1 I will stand on my guardpost, and go on the rock, and look away to see what he will say to me, and what I should answer to my reproof. |
2 And Yahweh answered me, and said, Write the vision, and make it plain on tables, that he may run that reads it.

And the Lord answered me and said, Write a vision clearly on a tablet, so that the one who reads might pursue them. |
2
And the Lord answered me and said, Write a vision clearly on a tablet, so that the one who reads might pursue them. |
3 For the vision is yet for an appointed time, but at the end it shall speak, and not lie; though it stay, wait for it; because it will surely come, it won’t stay.
3 Because the vision is still for a time, and it will arise at the end, and not in vain. If it should be slow in coming, wait for it; because it will come, and won’t delay. | 3 Because the vision is still for a time, and it will arise at the end, and not in vain. If it should be slow in coming, wait for it; because it will come, and won’t delay. |
4 Behold, his soul which is lifted up is not upright in him; but the just shall live by his faith.
4 If he should draw back, my soul has no pleasure in him; but the just shall live by my faith. | 4 If he should draw back, my soul has no pleasure in him; but the just shall live by my faith. |
5 Yes also, because he transgresses by wine, he is a proud man, neither keeps at home, who enlarges his desire as hell, and is as death, and cannot be satisfied, but gathers to him all nations, and heaps to him all people;
5 But the one who is drunk and a scoffer, a boastful man, won’t finish anything; who has enlarged his soul just like Hades, and like death he isn’t satisfied, and he will gather to himself all the nations, and will welcome to himself all the peoples. | 5 But the one who is drunk and a scoffer, a boastful man, won’t finish anything; who has enlarged his soul just like Hades, and like death he isn’t satisfied, and he will gather to himself all the nations, and will welcome to himself all the peoples. |
6 Shall not all these take up a parable against him, and a taunting proverb against him, and say, Woe to him who increases what is not his! how long? And to him who lades himself with thick clay!

6 Shall not all these things take up a parable against him and a riddle as a narrative of him? And they shall say, “Woe to him who increases for himself the things which are not his! how long? and who weighs down his collar heavily.” | 6 Shall not all these things take up a parable against him and a riddle as a narrative of him? And they shall say, “Woe to him who increases for himself the things which are not his! how long? and who weighs down his collar heavily.” |
7 Shall they not rise up suddenly that shall bite you, and awake that shall vex you, and you shall be for booties to them?
7 Because when they bite him, they will suddenly rise up. And those who plot against you will sober up. and you will be plunder for them. | 7 Because when they bite him, they will suddenly rise up. And those who plot against you will sober up. and you will be plunder for them. |
8 Because you have spoiled many nations, all the remnant of the people shall spoil you; because of men’s blood, and for the violence of the land, of the city, and of all that dwell in it.
8 Because you plundered many nations, all the peoples who are left shall plunder you, because of the blood of men, and the sins of the land and city, and of all who dwell in it. | 8 Because you plundered many nations, all the peoples who are left shall plunder you, because of the blood of men, and the sins of the land and city, and of all who dwell in it. |
9 Woe to him who covets an evil covetousness to his house, that he may set his nest on high, that he may be delivered from the power of evil!
9 “Oh, the one coveting an evil covetousness for his house, to set his nest on high, to be pulled out from the hand of evil ones.” | 9 “Oh, the one coveting an evil covetousness for his house, to set his nest on high, to be pulled out from the hand of evil ones.” |
10 You have consulted shame to your house by cutting off many people, and have sinned against your soul.
10 You have devised shame for your house, you have completely destroyed many peoples, and your soul has sinned. | 10 You have devised shame for your house, you have completely destroyed many peoples, and your soul has sinned. |
11 For the stone shall cry out of the wall, and the beam out of the timber shall answer it.
11 Because the stone shall cry out of the wall, and the beetle shall utter them from the wood. | 11 Because the stone shall cry out of the wall, and the beetle shall utter them from the wood. |
12 Woe to him who builds a town with blood, and establishes a city by iniquity!
12 “Woe to him who builds a city with bloodshed, and prepares a city by unrighteousness.” | 12 “Woe to him who builds a city with bloodshed, and prepares a city by unrighteousness.” |
13 Behold, is it not of Yahweh of armies that the people shall labour in the very fire, and the people shall weary themselves for very vanity?

13 Are not these things from the Lord Almighty? Enough peoples have failed in the fire, and many nations have become discouraged. | 13 Are not these things from the Lord Almighty? Enough peoples have failed in the fire, and many nations have become discouraged. |
14 For the earth shall be filled with the knowledge of the glory of Yahweh, as the waters cover the sea.
14 Because the land will be filled with the knowledge of the glory of the Lord; it will cover them like water. | 14 Because the land will be filled with the knowledge of the glory of the Lord; it will cover them like water. |
15 Woe to him who gives his neighbour drink, that put your bottle to him, and make him drunken also, that you may look on their nakedness!
15 “Woe to him who, with troubling outpouring, gives his neighbour to drink, and intoxicates him, that he may look on their caverns.” | 15 “Woe to him who, with troubling outpouring, gives his neighbour to drink, and intoxicates him, that he may look on their caverns.” |
16 You are filled with shame for glory; drink you also, and let your foreskin be uncovered; the cup of Yahweh’s right hand shall be turned to you, and shameful spewing shall be on your glory.
16 Drink, even you, a saturation of disgrace out of glory. Shake and quake! The cup of the right hand of the Lord has encircled around you, and dishonour has gathered on your glory. | 16 Drink, even you, a saturation of disgrace out of glory. Shake and quake! The cup of the right hand of the Lord has encircled around you, and dishonour has gathered on your glory. |
17 For the violence of Lebanon shall cover you, and the spoil of beasts, which made them afraid, because of men’s blood, and for the violence of the land, of the city, and of all that dwell in it.
17 For the ungodliness of Libanus shall cover you, and distress because of wild beasts shall frighten you, because of the blood of men, and the sins of the land and city, and of all who dwell in it. | 17 For the ungodliness of Libanus shall cover you, and distress because of wild beasts shall frighten you, because of the blood of men, and the sins of the land and city, and of all who dwell in it. |
18 What profits the carved image that the maker of it has engraven it; the molten image, and a teacher of lies, that the maker of his work trusts in it, to make dumb idols?

18 What advantage is a carved image, because they have carved it? They formed it as a molten work, a false appearance; because the fabricator has trusted in his work, to make speechless idols. | 18 What advantage is a carved image, because they have carved it? ηε formed it as a molten work, a false appearance; because the fabricator has trusted in his work, to make speechless idols. |
19 Woe to him who says to the wood, Awake; to the dumb stone, Arise, it shall teach! Behold, it is laid over with gold and silver, and there is no breath at all in the midst of it.
19 Woe to him who says to the wood, “Sober up, awaken!” and to the stone, “Be exalted!” And it is an appearance, and this is a casting of gold and silver, and there is no breath in it. | 19 Woe to him who says to the wood, “Sober up, awaken!” and to the stone, “Be exalted!” And it is an appearance, and this is a casting of gold and silver, and there is no breath in it. |
20 But Yahweh is in his holy temple; let all the earth keep silence before him.
20 But the Lord is in his holy temple; let all the land revere before him. | 20 But the Lord is in his holy temple; let all the land revere before him. |
