God’s Deliverance of His People

1 A prayer of Habakkuk the prophet on Shigionoth.

2 Oh Yahweh, I have heard your speech, and was afraid; Oh Yahweh, revive your work in the midst of the years, in the midst of the years make known; in wrath remember mercy.

2 Oh Lord, I have heard your fame, and feared; I considered your works, and was amazed; you shall be known between the two living creatures, you shall be acknowledged when the years draw near; you shall be manifested when the time is come; when my soul is troubled, you will in wrath remember mercy. 2 Oh Lord, I considered your works, and was amazed; you shall be known between the two living creatures, you shall be acknowledged when the years draw near; you shall be manifested when the time is come; when my soul is troubled, you will in wrath remember mercy.

3 God came from Teman, and the Holy One from mount Paran. Selah. His glory covered the heavens, and the earth was full of his praise.

3 God shall come from Thaiman, and the Holy One from the shady, leafy mountain. Pause. His virtue has covered the skies and the land is full of his praise. 3 God shall come from Thaiman, and the Holy One from the shady, leafy mountain. Pause. 4 And his brightness was as the light; he had horns coming out of his hand; and there was the hiding of his power.

4 And his brightness shall be like light; horns are in his hands, and he put a mighty love of his strength. 4 And his brightness shall be like light; horns are in his hands, and he put a mighty love of his strength.

5 Before him went the pestilence, and burning coals went forth at his feet.

5 A message shall go before him and he shall go out, his feet in sandals. 5 A message shall go before him and he shall go out, his feet in sandals.

6 He stood, and measured the earth; he beheld, and drove asunder the nations; and the everlasting mountains were scattered, the perpetual hills did bow; his ways are everlasting.

7 I saw the tents of Cushan in affliction; and the curtains of the land of Midian did tremble.

7 by His eternal journey.
I saw the encampments of the Aithiopians instead of troubles; they shall be terrified, even the tents of the land of Madiam.

8 Was Yahweh displeased against the rivers? Was your anger against the rivers? Was your wrath against the sea, that you did ride on your horses and your chariots of salvation?

8 μὴ ἐν ποταμοῖς ὠργίσθης, κύριε, ἐν ποταμοῖς θυμός σου, ἐν θαλάσσῃ τὸ ὅρμημά σου;
8 μὴ ἐν ποταμοῖς ὠργίσθης, Κύριε, ἐν ποταμοῖς θυμός σου;
ἐν θαλάσσῃ τὸ ὅρμημά σου;
8 Surely, you were not angry with rivers, O Lord? Or was your wrath against rivers, or your attack against a sea? Because you will mount your horses, and your cavalry is salvation. 8 Surely, you were not angry with rivers, O Lord? Or was your wrath against rivers, or your attack against a sea? Because you will mount your horses, and your cavalry is salvation.

9 Your bow was made completely naked, according to the oaths of the tribes, even your word. Selah. You clung the earth with rivers.

9 While stretching, you will stretch your bow on scepters, says the Lord. Pause. as rivers tear apart land. 9 While stretching, you will stretch your bow on scepters, says the Lord. Pause. as rivers tear apart land.

10 The mountains saw you, and they trembled; the overflowing of the water passed by; the deep uttered his voice, and lifted up his hands on high.

10 Peoples will see you and be in pain as you scatter the waters of a pathway. The deep gave forth its voice, the height of its appearance. 10 Peoples will see you and be in pain as you scatter the waters of a pathway. The deep gave forth its voice, the height of its appearance.

11 The sun and moon stood still in their habitation; at the light of your arrows they went, and at the shining of your glittering spear.

11 The sun was raised up, and the moon stood still in its course. Your projectiles will go into the light, into the brightness of the lightning of your weapons. 11 The sun was raised up, and the moon stood still in its course. Your projectiles will go into the light, into the brightness of the lightning of your weapons.

12 You marched through the land in indignation, you did thresh the heathen in anger.

12 With a threat you will diminish the land, and with wrath you will bring down nations. 12 With a threat you will diminish the land, and with wrath you will bring down nations.

13 You went forth for the salvation of your people, even for salvation with your anointed; you wounded the head out of the house of the wicked, by discovering the foundation to the neck. Selah.

13 You came forth for the salvation of your people, to save your anointed ones. You threw death on the heads of the lawless; you raised chains up to the neck. Pause. 13 You came forth for the salvation of your people, to save your anointed ones. You threw death on the heads of the lawless; you raised chains up to the neck. Pause.

14 You did strike through with his staves the head of his villages; they came out as a whirlwind to scatter me; their rejoicing was as to devour the poor secretly.

14 In a frenzy you cut through the heads of the mighty; they shall quake at it. They shall lay open their bridles like a poor man eating in secret. 14 In a frenzy you cut through the heads of the mighty; they shall quake at it. They shall lay open their bridles like a poor man eating in secret.

15 You walked through the sea with your horses, through the heap of great waters.

15 And you caused your horses to go up into the sea, as they were agitating much water. 15 And you caused your horses to go up into the sea, as they were agitating much water.

16 When I heard, my belly trembled; my lips quivered at the voice; rottenness entered into my bones, and I trembled in myself, that I might rest in the day of trouble; when he comes up to the people, he will invade them with his troops.

16 I watched, and my belly was frightened by the sound of the prayer of my lips. And trembling entered into my bones, and my posture was stirred beneath me. I will rest on a day of affliction to go up to a people of my resident alien place. 16 I watched, and my belly was frightened by the sound of the prayer of my lips. 17 Although the fig tree shall not blossom, neither shall fruit be in the vines; the labour of the olive shall fail, and the fields shall yield no food; the flock shall be cut off from the fold, and there shall be no herd in the stalls;

17 Although a fig tree doesn’t bear fruit, and there shall be no produce on the vines; the work of the olive will disappoint; and the plains won’t yield food; sheep have run out of food, and cows are not at the mangers; 17 Although a fig tree doesn’t bear fruit, and there shall be no produce on the vines; the work of the olive will disappoint; and the plains won’t yield food; sheep have run out of food, and cows are not at the mangers;

18 Yet I will rejoice in Yahweh, I will joy in the God of my salvation.

18 yet I will take delight in the Lord, I will rejoice in God my Saviour. 18 yet I will take delight in the Lord, I will rejoice in God my Saviour.

19 Yahweh Elohim is my strength, and he will make my feet like hinds’ feet, and he will make me to walk on my high places. To the chief singer on my stringed instruments.

19 The Lord God is my power, and he shall establish my feet to the end. He causes me to mount the heights, to be victorious in his song. 19 The Lord God is my power, and he shall establish my feet to the end. He causes me to mount the heights, to be victorious in his song.
