Rebellion of God’s People
1 The vision of Isaiah the son of Amoz, which he saw concerning Judah and Jerusalem in the days of Uzziah, Jotham, Ahaz, and Hezekiah, kings of Judah.
1 A vision which Ēsaias the son of Amōs saw, which he saw against Jouda, and against Jerousalēm, in the reign of Ozias, and Jōatham, and Achaz, and Ezekias, who reigned over Judea. | 1 The vision which Hēsaias the son of Amos saw, which he saw against Jouda, and against Jerusalem, in the reign of Ozias, and Jōatham, and Achaz, and Ezekias, who reigned over Judea. |
2 Hear, Oh heavens, and give ear, Oh earth; for Yahweh has spoken, I have nourished and brought up children, and they have rebelled against me.
2 Hear, Oh heaven, and listen, Oh earth; because the Lord spoke, I fathered and exalted sons, but they rejected me. | 2 Hear, Oh heaven, and listen, Oh earth; because the Lord spoke, I fathered and exalted sons, but they rejected me. |
3 The ox knows his owner, and the donkey his master’s crib; but Israēl doesn’t know, my people doesn’t consider.
3 The ox knows his owner, and the donkey his master’s crib; but Israēl doesn’t know me, and the people don’t understand me. | 3 The ox knows his owner, and the donkey his master’s crib; but Israēl doesn’t know me, and the people don’t understand me. |
4
Alas, sinful nation, a people loaded with iniquity, a seed of evildoers, children who are corrupters: they have forsaken Yahweh, they have provoked the Holy One of Israēl to anger, they are gone away backward.
4 Alas, sinful nation, people full of sins, evil offspring, lawless ones; you have forsaken the Lord and provoked to anger the Holy One of Israēl. | 4 Alas, sinful nation, people full of sins, evil offspring, lawless ones; you have forsaken the Lord and provoked to anger the Holy One of Israēl. |
5 Why should you be stricken any more? You will revolt more and more: the whole head is sick, and the whole heart faint.

5
Why should you be hit anymore while you persist in lawlessness? Every head is in pain and every heart is in sadness. |
5
Why should you be hit anymore while you persist in lawlessness? Every head is in pain and every heart is in sadness. |
6 From the sole of the foot even to the head there is no soundness in it; but wounds, and bruises, and putrefying sores: they haven’t been closed, neither bound up, neither mollified with ointment.
6 From feet to head, whether injury or bruise or festering wound, there is no ointment to put on or olive oil or bandages. | 6 From feet to head, there is no health, whether injury or bruise or festering wound, there is no ointment to put on or olive oil or bandages. |
7 Your country is desolate, your cities are burned with fire: your land, strangers devour it in your presence, and it is desolate, as overthrown by strangers.
7 Your land is desolate, your cities are burned with fire; strangers devour your country in your presence, and it is made desolate, overthrown by strange peoples. | 7 Your land is desolate, your cities are burned with fire; strangers devour your country in your presence, and it is made desolate, overthrown by strange peoples. |
8 And the daughter of Zion is left as a cottage in a vineyard, as a lodge in a garden of cucumbers, as a besieged city.
8 The daughter of Siōn shall be deserted like a tent in a vineyard, and like a storage bin in a garden of cucumbers, like a besieged city. | 8 The daughter of Siōn shall be deserted like a tent in a vineyard, and like a storage bin in a garden of cucumbers, like a besieged city. |
9 Except Yahweh of armies had left to us a very small remnant, we should have been as Sodom, and we should have been like to Gomorrah.
9 And if the Lord of Sabaōth had not left us offspring, we should have been as Sodoma, and we would resemble Gomorra. | 9 And if the Lord of Sabaōth had not left us offspring, we should have been as Sodoma, and we would resemble Gomorra. |
God Has Had Enough
10 Hear the word of Yahweh, you rulers of Sodom; give ear to the law of our God, you people of Gomorrah.
10 Hear a word of the Lord, you leaders of Sodoma; pay attention to the law of God, people of Gomorra. | 10 Hear a word of the Lord, you leaders of Sodoma; pay attention to the law of God, people of Gomorra. |
11 To what purpose is the multitude of your sacrifices to me? Says Yahweh: I am full of the burnt offerings of rams, and the fat of fed beasts; and I delight not in the blood of bullocks, or of lambs, or of male goats.
11

The abundance of your sacrifices, what’s it to me?
says the Lord.
I am full of whole burnt offerings of rams; and I don’t want the fat of lambs, and the blood of bulls and goats. |

I am full of whole burnt offerings of rams; and I don’t want the fat of lambs, and the blood of bulls and goats. |
12 When you come to appear before me, who has required this at your hand, to tread my courts?

13 Bring no more vain oblations; incense is an abomination to me; the new moons and sabbaths, the calling of assemblies, I cannot away with; it is iniquity, even the solemn meeting.
13 If you bring fine flour, it is vain; incense is an abomination to me; I cannot endure your new moons, and your sabbaths, and the great day; | 13 Though you bring fine flour, it is vain; incense is an abomination to me; I cannot bear your new moons, and your sabbaths, and the great day; |
14 Your new moons and your appointed feasts my soul hates: they are a trouble to me; I am weary to carry them.
14 My soul hates your fasting, and rest from work , and your new moons, and your feasts; you have become full to me; I will no longer pardon your sins. | 14 My soul hates your fasting, and rest from work , and your new moons, and your feasts; you have become full to me; I will no longer pardon your sins. |
15
And when you spread forth your hands, I will hide my eyes from you: yes, when you make many prayers, I won’t hear: your hands are full of blood.
15 When you stretch out hands to me, I will turn my eyes away from you; and if you multiply prayers, I won’t listen to you; for your hands are full of blood. | 15 When you stretch out your hands to me, I will turn my eyes away from you; and if you multiply prayers, I won’t listen to you; for your hands are full of blood. |
16 Wash yourself, make youself clean; put away the evil of your doings from before my eyes; cease to do evil;
16 Wash yourselves, become clean, remove the evil from your souls before my eyes; cease from your evil. | 16 Wash yourselves, become clean, remove the evil from your souls before my eyes; cease from your evil. |
17 Learn to do well; seek judgment, relieve the oppressed, judge the fatherless, plead for the widow.
17 Learn to do good; seek out judgment, rescue the one who is wronged, defend the orphan, and do justice for the widow. | 17 Learn to do good; seek out judgment, rescue the one who is wronged, defend the orphan, and do justice for the widow. |
"Let Us Reason"
18 Come now, and let’s reason together, says Yahweh: though your sins be as scarlet, they shall be as white as snow; though they be red like crimson, they shall be as wool.
18 And come, let’s discuss, says the Lord, and though your sins be like purple, I will make them white like snow; and though they be like scarlet, I will make them white like wool. | 18 And come, let’s discuss, says the Lord, and though your sins be like purple, I will make them white like snow; and though they be like scarlet, I will make them white like wool. |
19 If you be willing and obedient, you shall eat the good of the land.
19 And if you are willing, and listen to me, you shall eat the good of the land; | 19 And if you are willing, and listen to me, you shall eat the good of the land; |
20 But if you refuse and rebel, you shall be devoured with the sword; for the mouth of Yahweh has spoken it.
20 but if you aren’t willing, nor listen to me, a dagger will devour you; for the mouth of the Lord has spoken these things. | 20 but if you aren’t willing, nor listen to me, a dagger will devour you; for the mouth of the Lord has spoken these things. |
Zion Corrupted, to be Redeemed
21 How is the faithful city become a prostitute! it was full of judgment; righteousness lodged in it; but now murderers.
21 How the faithful city Siōn has become a prostitute! She was full of judgment, in which righteousness lodged, but now murderers. | 21 How the faithful city Siōn has become a prostitute! She was full of judgment, in which righteousness lodged, but now murderers. |
22 Your silver is become dross, your wine mixed with water.
22 Your silver is worthless, your bartenders mix the wine with water. | 22 Your silver is worthless, your bartenders mix the wine with water. |
23 Your princes are rebellious, and companions of thieves: everyone loves gifts, and follows after rewards: they judge not the fatherless, neither does the cause of the widow come to them.
23 Your leaders are disobedient, companions of thieves, lovers of bribes, pursuing payback; not defending orphans, and not paying attention to widows’ cause. | 23 Your leaders are disobedient, companions of thieves, lovers of bribes, pursuing payback; not defending orphans, and not paying attention to widows’ cause. |
24 Therefore says the Lord, Yahweh of armies, the mighty One of Israēl, Alas, I will ease me of my adversaries, and avenge me of my enemies.
24 Therefore the sovereign Lord Sabaōth says, Woe to the mighty men of Israēl; for my wrath shall not cease against my adversaries, and I will execute judgment on my enemies. | 24 Therefore the sovereign Lord Sabaōth says, Woe to the mighty men of Israēl; for my wrath shall not cease against my adversaries, and I will execute judgment on my enemies. |
25 And I will turn my hand on you, and purely purge away your dross, and take away all your tin.
25 And I will bring my hand on you, and burn you into purity, but I will destroy the disobedient, and will remove all the lawless from you and I will humble all who are arrogant. | 25 And I will bring my hand on you, and burn you into purity, but I will destroy the disobedient, and will remove all the lawless from you and I will humble all who are arrogant. |
26 And I will restore your judges as at the first, and your counsellers as at the beginning: afterward you shall be called, The city of righteousness, the faithful city.
26 And I will set up your judges as before and your counselors as at the beginning. And after these things you shall be called the city of righteousness, the faithful mother city, Siōn. | 26 And I will set up your judges as before and your counselors as at the beginning. And after these things you shall be called the city of righteousness, the faithful mother city, Siōn. |
27 Zion shall be redeemed with judgment, and her converts with righteousness.
27 For her captives shall be saved with judgment, and with mercy. | 27 For her captives shall be saved with judgment, and with mercy. |
28
And the destruction of the transgressors and of the sinners shall be together, and they who forsake Yahweh shall be consumed.
28 But the lawless and the sinners shall be crushed together, and those who forsake the Lord shall be finished. | 28 But the lawless and the sinners shall be crushed together, and those who forsake the Lord shall be finished. |
29 For they shall be ashamed of the oaks which you have desired, and you shall be confounded for the gardens that you have chosen.
29 For they shall be ashamed because by their idols, which they wanted, and they were embarrassed because of their gardens, which they coveted. | 29 For they shall be ashamed because by their idols, which they wanted, and they were embarrassed because of their gardens, which they coveted. |
30 For you shall be as an oak whose leaf feeds, and as a garden that has no water.
30 For they shall be like a terebinth that has shed its leaves and like a garden that has no water. | 30 For they shall be like a terebinth that has shed its leaves and like a garden that has no water. |
31 And the strong shall be as tow, and the maker of it as a spark, and they shall both burn together, and none shall quench them.
31 And their strength shall be like a straw of flax, and their works like sparks of fire, and the lawless and the sinners shall be burned together, and there shall be no one to quench them. | 31 And their strength shall be like a straw of flax, and their works like sparks of fire, and the lawless and the sinners shall be burned together, and there shall be no one to quench them. |
