Chapter 44

AlexandrinusVaticanus

The Brothers Are Brought Back

1 And he commanded the steward of his house, saying, “Fill the men’s sacks with food, as much as they can carry, and put every man’s money in his sack’s mouth.

1 And Jōsēph commanded the one who was in charge of his household, saying, “Fill the men’s bags with food, as much as they are able to carry, and put each one’s money in the mouth of his bag, 1 And Jōsēph commanded the one who was in charge of his household, saying, “Fill the men’s bags with food, as much as they are able to carry, and put each one’s money in the mouth of his bag,

2 And put my cup, the silver cup, in the sack’s mouth of the youngest, and his grain money.” And he did according to the word that Joseph had spoken.

2 “and put my silver cup into the bag of the younger one, with the value of his grain.” And it happened according to the word of Jōsēph, just as he said. 2 “and put my silver cup into the bag of the younger one, with the value of his grain.” And it happened according to the word of Jōsēph, just as he said.

3 As soon as the morning was light, the men were sent away, they and their donkeys.

3 The morning dawned, and the men were sent off, they and their donkeys. 3 The morning dawned, and the men were sent off, they and their donkeys.

4 And when they were gone out of the city, and not yet far off, Joseph said to his steward, “Up, follow after the men; and when you overtake them, say to them, ‘Why have you rewarded evil for good?

4 ἐξελθόντων δὲ αὐτῶν τὴν πόλιν (οὐκ ἀπέσχον μακράν) καὶ Ἰωσὴφ εἶπεν τῷ ἐπὶ τῆς οἰκίας αὐτοῦ Ἀναστὰς ἐπιδίωξον ὀπίσω τῶν ἀνθρώπων καὶ καταλήμψῃ αὐτοὺς καὶ ἐρεῖς αὐτοῖς Τί ὅτι ἀνταπεδώκατε πονηρὰ ἀντὶ καλῶν; 4 ἐξελθόντων δὲ αὐτῶν τὴν πόλιν, οὐκ ἀπέσχον μακράν, καὶ Ἰωσὴφ εἶπε τῷ ἐπὶ τῆς οἰκίας αὐτοῦ· ἀναστὰς ἐπιδίωξον ὀπίσω τῶν ἀνθρώπων καὶ καταλήψῃ αὐτοὺς καὶ ἐρεῖς αὐτοῖς· τί ὅτι ἀνταπεδώκατε πονηρὰ ἀντὶ καλῶν;
ἱνατί ἐκλέψατέ μου τὸ κόνδυ τὸ ἀργυροῦν;
4 Now after they went from the city, they were not far off, and Jōsēph said to the one in charge of his household, “After you arise, pursue after the men, and you shall overtake them and say to them, ‛Why is it that you returned evil for good? 4 Now after they went from the city, they were not far off, and Jōsēph said to the one in charge of his household, “After you arise, pursue after the men, and you shall overtake them and say to them, ‛Why is it that you returned evil for good? Why did you steal my silver cup?

5 Is not this it in which my lord drinks, and by which indeed he foretells? You have done evil in so doing.’ ”

5 ἵνα τί ἐκλέψατέ μου τὸ κόνδυ τὸ ἀργυροῦν;
οὐ τοῦτό ἐστιν, ἐν πίνει κύριός μου;
5 οὐ τοῦτό ἐστιν, ἐν πίνει κύριός μου;
5 Why did you steal my silver cup? Isn’t this in which my master drinks? And by bird-omens he practices bird-fortelling with it. You have performed evil by what you have done.’ ” 5 Isn’t this in which my master drinks? And by bird-omens he practices bird-fortelling with it. You have performed evil by what you have done.’ ”

6 And he overtook them, and he spoke to them these same words.

6 And after he found them, he spoke to them according to these words. 6 And after he found them, he spoke to them according to these words.

7 And they said to him, “Why my lord say these words? God forbid that your servants should do according to this thing.

7 οἱ δὲ εἶπον αὐτῷ Ἵνα τί λαλεῖ κύριος κατὰ τὰ ῥήματα ταῦτα;
7 οἱ δὲ εἶπαν αὐτῷ· ἱνατί λαλεῖ κύριος κατὰ τὰ ῥήματα ταῦτα;
7 Then they said to him, “Why does the lord speak according to these words? It may not be for your servants to do according to this word! 7 Then they said to him, “Why does the lord speak according to these words? It may not be for your servants to do according to this word!

8 Behold, the money, which we found in our sacks’ mouths, we brought again to you out of the land of Canaan: how then should we steal out of your lord’s house silver or gold?

8 εἰ τὸ μὲν ἀργύριον, εὕρομεν ἐν τοῖς μαρσίπποις ἡμῶν, ἀπεστρέψαμεν πρὸς σὲ ἐκ γῆς Χαναάν, πῶς ἄν κλέψαιμεν ἐκ τοῦ οἴκου τοῦ κυρίου σου ἀργύριον χρυσίον; 8 εἰ τὸ μὲν ἀργύριον, εὕρομεν ἐν τοῖς μαρσίπποις ἡμῶν, ἀπεστρέψαμεν πρὸς σὲ ἐκ γῆς Χαναάν, πῶς ἄν κλέψαιμεν ἐκ τοῦ οἴκου τοῦ κυρίου σου ἀργύριον χρυσίον;
8 If we brought back to you from Chanaan-land the money that we found in our bags, how could we steal silver or gold from your lord’s house? 8 If we brought back to you from Chanaan-land the money that we found in our bags, how could we steal silver or gold from your lord’s house?

9 With whomever of your servants it be found, both let him die, and we also will be my lord’s bondmen.”

9 With whomever the cup of your servant is found, let him die; but as for us, we will be slaves to our lord.” 9 With whomever the cup of your servant is found, let him die; but as for us, we will be slaves to our lord.”

10 And he said, “Now also let it be according to your words; he with whom it is found shall be my servant; and you shall be blameless.”

10 And he said, “And now, as you say thus it shall be. The man with whom the cup should be found shall be my slave, but as for you, you shall be clear.” 10 And he said, “And now, as you say thus it shall be. The man with whom the cup should be found shall be my slave, but as for you, you shall be clear.”

11 Then they speedily took down every man his sack to the ground, and opened every man his sack.

11 And they hurried and lowered each his bag to the ground, and each opened his bag. 11 And they were hurrying and lowered each his bag to the ground, and each opened his bag.

12 And he searched, and began at the eldest, and left at the youngest; and the cup was found in Benjamin’s sack.

12 And he was searching, beginning from the elder until he came to the younger, and he found the cup in Benjamin’s bag. 12 And he was searching, beginning from the elder until he came to the younger, and he found the cup in Benjamin’s bag.

13 Then they tore their clothes, and loaded every man his donkey, and returned to the city.

13 And they tore their clothes, and each one put his bag on his donkey, and they returned to the city. 13 And they tore their clothes, and each one put his bag on his donkey, and they returned to the city.

14 And Judah and his brothers came to Joseph’s house; for he was yet there; and they fell before him on the ground.

14 And Juda and his brothers entered to Jōsēph, while he was still there, and they fell on the ground before him. 14 And Juda and his brothers entered to Jōsēph, while he was still there, and they fell on the ground before him.

15 And Joseph said to them, “What deed is this that you have done? Don’t you know that such a man as I can certainly divine?”

15 εἶπεν δὲ αὐτοῖς Ἰωσὴφ Τί τὸ πρᾶγμα τοῦτο, ἐποιήσατε;
οὐκ οἴδατε ὅτι οἰωνισμῷ οἰωνιεῖται ἄνθρωπος οἷος ἐγώ;
15 εἶπε δὲ αὐτοῖς Ἰωσήφ· τί τὸ πρᾶγμα τοῦτο ἐποιήσατε;
οὐκ οἴδατε ὅτι οἰωνισμῷ οἰωνιεῖται ἄνθρωπος, οἷος ἐγώ;
15 And Jōsēph said to them, “What is this thing that you have done? Don’t you know that a person such as I will practice bird-foretelling by bird-omens?” 15 And Jōsēph said to them, “What is this thing that you have done? Don’t you know that a person such as I will practice bird-foretelling by bird-omens?”

16 And Judah said, “What shall we say to my lord? What shall we speak? Or how shall we clear ourselves? God has found out the iniquity of your servants: behold, we are my lord’s servants, both we, and he also with whom the cup is found.”

16 εἶπεν δὲ Ἰούδας Τί ἀντεροῦμεν τῷ κυρίῳ τί λαλήσωμεν τί δικαιωθῶμεν;
16 εἶπε δὲ Ἰούδας· τί ἀντεροῦμεν τῷ κυρίῳ, τί λαλήσομεν, τί δικαιωθῶμεν;
16 And Jouda said, “What shall we say in answer to our lord or what should we speak or how should we justify ourselves? But God has found out the injustice of your servants. Look! we are our lord’s domestics, both we and the one with whom the cup has been found.” 16 And Jouda said, “What shall we say in answer to our lord or what should we speak or how should we justify ourselves? But God has found out the injustice of your servants. Look! we are our lord’s domestics, both we and the one with whom the cup has been found.”

17 And he said, “God forbid that I should do so; but the man in whose hand the cup is found, he shall be my servant; and as for you, go up in peace to your father.”

17 But Jōsēph said, “May it not be for me to do this matter! The man with whom the cup was found, he shall be my slave, but as for you, go up with safety to your father.” 17 But Jōsēph said, “May it not be for me to do this matter! The man with whom the cup was found, he shall be my slave, but as for you, go up with safety to your father.”

18 Then Judah came near to him, and said, “Oh my lord, let your servant, please, speak a word in my lord’s ears, and don’t let your anger burn against your servant; for you are even as Pharaoh.

18 Then after Jouda drew near to him, he said, “I appeal, sir, let your servant speak a word before you, and don’t become angry with your servant, because you are after Pharaō. 18 Then after Jouda drew near to him, he said, “I appeal, sir, let your servant speak a word before you, and don’t become angry with your servant, because you are after Pharaō.

19 My lord asked his servants, saying, ‘Have you a father, or a brother?’

19 κύριε, σὺ ἠρώτησας τοὺς παῖδάς σου λέγων Εἰ ἔχετε πατέρα ἀδελφόν; 19 κύριε, σὺ ἠρώτησας τοὺς παῖδάς σου, λέγων· εἰ ἔχετε πατέρα ἀδελφόν;
19 Sir, you asked your servants, saying, ‛Have you a father or a brother?’ 19 Sir, you asked your servants, saying, ‛Have you a father or a brother?’

20 And we said to my lord, ‘We have a father, an old man, and a child of his old age, a little one; and his brother is dead, and he alone is left of his mother, and his father loves him.’

20 And we said to our lord, ‛We have an elderly father, and he has a younger child of his old age, and his brother died, and he alone was left to his mother, and his father loved him.’ 20 And we said to our lord, ‛We have an elderly father, and he has a younger child of his old age, and his brother died, and he alone was left to his mother, and his father loved him.’

21 And you said to your servants, ‘Bring him down to me, that I may set my eyes on him.’

21 Then you said to your servants, ‛Bring him down to me, and I am caring for him.’ 21 Then you said to your servants, ‛Bring him down to me, and I am caring for him.’

22 And we said to my lord, ‘The lad cannot leave his father; for if he should leave his father, his father would die.’

22 And we said to our lord, ‛The child will not be able to leave his father behind, and if he should leave his father behind, he will die.’ 22 And we said to our lord, ‛The child will not be able to leave his father behind, and if he should leave his father behind, he will die.’

23 And you said to your servants, ‘Unless your youngest brother come down with you, you shall see my face no more.’

23 Then it was you who said to your servants, ‛Unless your younger brother comes down with you, you shall not continue to see my face again.’ 23 Then it was you who said to your servants, ‛Unless your younger brother comes down with you, you shall not continue to see my face again.’

24 And it happened when we came up to your servant my father, we told him the words of my lord.

24 And it happened when we went up to your servant, our father, that we told him the words of our lord. 24 And it happened when we went up to your servant, our father, that we told him the words of our lord.

25 And our father said, ‘Go again, and buy us a little food.’

25 And our father said, ‛Go again, and buy us a little food.’ 25 And our father said, ‛Go again, and buy us a little food.’

26 And we said, ‘We cannot go down: if our youngest brother be with us, then will we go down; for we may not see the man’s face, unless our youngest brother is with us.’

26 But we said, ‛We shall not be able to go down; but if only our younger brother goes down with us, we will go down; for we shall not be able to see the man’s face, our younger brother not being with us.’ 26 But we said, ‛We shall not be able to go down; but if only our younger brother goes down with us, we will go down; for we shall not be able to see the man’s face, our younger brother not being with us.’

27 And your servant my father said to us, ‘You know that my wife gave birth to me two sons.

27 And your servant our father said to us, ‛You know that my wife gave birth only two to me; 27 And your servant our father said to us, ‛You know that my wife gave birth only two to me;

28 And the one went out from me, and I said, “Surely he is torn in pieces”; and I saw him not since.

28 and one is departed from me; and you said that he was devoured of wild beasts, and I haven’t seen him again even now. 28 and one is departed from me; and you said that he was devoured of wild beasts, and I haven’t seen him even to now.

29 And if you take this also from me, and mischief befall him, you shall bring down my gray hairs with sorrow to the grave.’

29 So if you take this one also from my presence and sickness happens to him on the trip, then you will bring down my old age with sorrow to Hades.’ 29 So if you take this one also from my presence and sickness happens to him on the trip, then you will bring down my old age with sorrow to Hades.’

30 Now therefore when I come to your servant my father, and the lad isn’t with us; seeing that his life is bound up in the lad’s life;

30 So now if I go in to your servant, our father, and the child is not with us (now his soul depends on the soul of this one), 30 So now if I go in to your servant, our father, and the child is not with us (now his soul depends on the soul of this one),

31 It shall come to pass, when he sees that the lad is not with us, that he will die; and your servants shall bring down the gray hairs of your servant our father with sorrow to the grave.

31 then it shall be that when he sees the child is not with us, he will be finished, and your servants will bring down the old age of your servant, our father, with grief to Hades. 31 then it shall be that when he sees the child is not with us, he will be finished, and your servants will bring down the old age of your servant, our father, with grief to Hades.

32 For your servant became surety for the lad to my father, saying, ‘If I bring him not to you, then I shall bear the blame to my father forever.’

32 For your servant has become surety for the child with my father, saying, ‛If I don’t bring him to you and set him before you, I will have failed towards my father for all days.’ 32 For your servant has become surety for the child with my father, saying, ‛If I don’t bring him to you and set him before you, I will have failed towards my father for all days.’

33 Now therefore, please, let your servant abide instead of the lad a servant to my lord; and let the lad go up with his brothers.
