Chapter 37

AlexandrinusVaticanus

Joseph’s Dream

1 And Jacōb dwelt in the land in which his father was a stranger, in the land of Canaan.

1 Now Jacōb settled in the land where his father lived as a resident alien, in Chanaan-land. 1 Now Jacōb settled in the land where his father lived as a resident alien, in Chanaan-land.

2 These are the generations of Jacōb. Joseph, being 17 years old, was feeding the flock with his brothers; and the lad was with the sons of Bilhah, and with the sons of Zilpah, his father’s wives; and Joseph brought to his father their evil report.

2 And these are the generations of Jacōb. Jōsēph, seventeen years of age, shepherds the sheep with his brothers, when he was young, with the sons of Balla and with the sons of Zelpha, his father’s wives. And Jōsēph brought back an evil fault to their father Israēl. 2 And these are the generations of Jacōb. Jōsēph, seventeen years of age, shepherds the sheep with his brothers, when he was young, with the sons of Balla and with the sons of Zelpha, his father’s wives. And Jōsēph brought back an evil fault to their father Israēl.

3 Now Israēl loved Joseph more than all his children, because he was the son of his old age; and he made him a coat of many colours.

3 Now Jacōb loved Jōsēph more than all his sons, because he was a son of old age to him, and he made him a multi-coloured tunic. 3 Now Jacōb loved Jōsēph more than all his sons, because he was a son of old age to him, and he made him a multi-coloured tunic.

4 And when his brothers saw that their father loved him more than all his brothers, they hated him, and couldn’t speak peaceably to him.

4 But when his brothers saw that their father loves him above all his sons, they hated him and were not able to speak anything peaceable to him. 4 But when his brothers saw that their father loves him above all his sons, they hated him and were not able to speak anything peaceable to him.

5 And Joseph dreamed a dream, and he told it his brothers; and they hated him yet the more.

5 And after Jōsēph dreamed a dream, he told it to his brothers, 5 And after Jōsēph dreamed a dream, he told it to his brothers,

6 And he said to them, Hear, please, this dream which I have dreamed.

6 and he said to them, “Hear this dream that I dreamed. 6 and he said to them, “Hear this dream that I dreamed.

7 For, behold, we were binding sheaves in the field, and, lo, my sheaf arose, and also stood upright; and, behold, your sheaves stood all around, and made obeisance to my sheaf.

7 I imagined we were binding sheaves in the middle of the plain, and my sheaf rose and stood upright; and after your sheaves turned around, they did obeisance to my sheaf.” 7 I imagined you were binding sheaves in the middle of the plain, and my sheaf rose and stood upright; and after your sheaves turned around, they did obeisance to my sheaf.”

8 And his brothers said to him, “Shall you indeed reign over us? Or you shall indeed have dominion over us?” And they hated him yet the more for his dreams, and for his words.

8 εἶπαν δὲ αὐτῷ οἱ ἀδελφοί, Μὴ βασιλεύων βασιλεύσεις ἐφ’ ἡμᾶς κυριεύων κυριεύσεις ἡμῶν;
8 εἶπαν δὲ αὐτῷ οἱ ἀδελφοὶ αὐτοῦ· μὴ βασιλεύων βασιλεύσεις ἐφ’ ἡμᾶς κυριεύων κυριεύσεις ἡμῶν;
8 And they said to him, “While reigning, will you reign over us, or, while dominating you, will you dominate us?” And they continued to hate him more for the sake of his dreams and for the sake of his words. 8 And his brothers said to him, “While reigning, will you reign over us, or, while dominating you, will you dominate us?” And they continued to hate him more for the sake of his dreams and for the sake of his words.

9 And he dreamed yet another dream, and told it to his brothers, and said, “Behold, I have dreamed a dream more; and, behold, the sun and the moon and the eleven stars made obeisance to me.”

9 And he saw another dream and told it to his father and to his brothers and said, “Look! I have dreamed another dream, as though the sun and the moon and eleven stars were doing obeisance to me.” 9 And he saw another dream and told it to his father and to his brothers and said, “Look! I have dreamed another dream, as though the sun and the moon and eleven stars were doing obeisance to me.”

10 And he told it to his father, and to his brothers; and his father rebuked him, and said to him, “What is this dream that you have dreamed? Shall I and your mother and your brothers indeed come to bow down ourselves to you to the earth?”

10 καὶ ἐπετίμησεν αὐτῷ πατὴρ αὐτοῦ καὶ εἶπεν αὐτῷ, Τί τὸ ἐνύπνιον τοῦτο, ἐνυπνιάσθης;
ἆρά γε ἐλθόντες ἐλευσόμεθα ἐγώ τε καὶ μήτηρ σου καὶ οἱ ἀδελφοί σου προσκυνῆσαί σοί ἐπὶ τὴν γῆν;
10 καὶ ἐπετίμησεν αὐτῷ πατὴρ αὐτοῦ καὶ εἶπε αὐτῷ· τί τὸ ἐνύπνιον τοῦτο, ὃν ἐνυπνιάσθης;
ἆρά γε ἐλθόντες ἐλευσόμεθα ἐγώ τε καὶ μήτηρ σου καὶ οἱ ἀδελφοί σου προσκυνῆσαί σοι ἐπὶ τὴν γῆν;
10 And his father rebuked him and said to him, “What is this dream that you have dreamed? After we come, I and your mother and your brothers, shall we indeed come to do obeisance on the ground to you?” 10 And his father rebuked him and said to him, “What is this dream that you have dreamed? After we come, I and your mother and your brothers, shall we indeed come to do obeisance on the ground to you?”

11 And his brothers envied him; but his father observed the saying.

11 But his brothers were jealous of him, but his father closely watched the matter. 11 But his brothers were jealous of him, but his father closely watched the matter.

12 And his brothers went to feed their father’s flock in Shechem.

12 Then his brothers went to Sychem to feed their father’s sheep. 12 Then his brothers went to Sychem to feed their father’s sheep.

13 And Israēl said to Joseph, “Aren’t your brothers feeding the flock in Shechem? Come, and I will send you to them.” And he said to him, “Here am I.”

13 καὶ εἶπεν Ἰσραὴλ πρὸς Ἰωσήφ, Οὐχ οἱ ἀδελφοί σου ποιμαίνουσιν ἐν Συχέμ;
13 καὶ εἶπε Ἰσραὴλ πρὸς Ἰωσήφ· οὐχὶ οἱ ἀδελφοί σου ποιμαίνουσιν εἰς Συχέμ;
13 And Israēl said to Jōsēph, “Aren’t your brothers tending sheep at Sychem? Come, let me send you to them.” And he said to him, “Here I am.” 13 And Israēl said to Jōsēph, “Aren’t your brothers tending sheep at Sychem? Come, let me send you to them.” And he said to him, “Here I am.”

14 And he said to him, “Go, please, see whether it be well with your brothers, and well with the flocks; and bring me word again.” So he sent him out of the vale of Hebron, and he came to Shechem.

14 And Israēl said to him, “Go, see if your brothers and the sheep are well, and tell me.” And he sent him out of the valley of Chebrōn, and he went to Sychem. 14 And Israēl said to him, “Go, see if your brothers and the sheep are well, and tell me.” And he sent him out of the valley of Chebrōn, and he went to Sychem.

15 And a certain man found him, and, behold, he was wandering in the field; and the man asked him, saying, “What are you seeking?”

15 καὶ εὗρεν αὐτὸν ἄνθρωπος πλανώμενον ἐν τῷ πεδίῳ· ἠρώτησεν δὲ αὐτὸν ἄνθρωπος λέγων, Τί ζητεῖς; 15 καὶ εὗρεν αὐτὸν ἄνθρωπος πλανώμενον ἐν τῷ πεδίῳ· ἠρώτησε δὲ αὐτὸν ἄνθρωπος λέγων· τί ζητεῖς;
15 And a man found him wandering in the plain, then the man asked him, saying, “What are you seeking?” 15 And a man found him wandering in the plain, then the man asked him, saying, “What are you seeking?”

16 And he said, “I seek my brothers: tell me, please, where they feed their flocks.”

16 And he said, “I am seeking my brothers; tell me where they are pasturing.” 16 And he said, “I am seeking my brothers; tell me where they are pasturing.”

17 And the man said, “They are departed hence; for I heard them say, ‘Let’s go to Dothan.’ ” And Joseph went after his brothers, and found them in Dothan.

17 And the man said to him, “They have departed from here, for I heard them say, ‛Let’s go to Dōthaim.’ ” And Jōsēph went after his brothers and found them at Dōthaim. 17 And the man said to him, “They have departed from here, for I heard them say, ‛Let’s go to Dōthaim.’ ” And Jōsēph went after his brothers and found them at Dōthaim.

Plot against Joseph

18 And when they saw him afar off, even before he came near to them, they conspired against him to slay him.

18 Now they caught sight of him in the distance before he came near to them, and they intended to act wickedly to kill him. 18 Now they caught sight of him in the distance before he came near to them, and they intended to act wickedly to kill him.

19 And they said one to another, “Behold, this dreamer comes.

19 And each said to his brother, “Look! that dreamer is coming. 19 And each said to his brother, “Look! that dreamer is coming.

20 Come now therefore, and let’s slay him, and cast him into some pit, and we will say, ‘Some evil beast has devoured him’; and we shall see what will become of his dreams.”

20 So come now, let’s kill him and throw him into one of the pits, and we shall say, ‛An evil wild animal devoured him,’ and we shall see what his dreams will be.” 20 So come now, let’s kill him and throw him into one of the pits, and we shall say, ‛An evil wild animal devoured him,’ and we shall see what his dreams will be.”

21 And Reuben heard it, and he delivered him out of their hands; and said, “Let’s not kill him.”

21 But when Rhoubēn heard it, he delivered him out of their hands and said, “We shall not strike him for his soul.” 21 But when Rhoubēn heard it, he delivered him out of their hands and said, “We shall not strike him for his soul.”

22 And Reuben said to them, “Shed no blood, but cast him into this pit that is in the wilderness, and lay no hand on him”; that he might rid him out of their hands, to deliver him to his father again.

22 And Rhoubēn said to them, “Don’t shed blood; throw him into this pit in the wilderness, but don’t lay a hand on him” so that he might deliver him out of their hands and restore him to his father. 22 And Rhoubēn said to them, “Don’t shed blood; throw him into one of these pits in the wilderness, but don’t lay a hand on him” so that he might deliver him out of their hands and restore him to his father.

23 And it happened, when Joseph came to his brothers, that they stripped Joseph out of his coat, his coat of many colours that was on him;

23 Now it happened when Jōsēph came to his brothers, they stripped Jōsēph of the multi-coloured tunic that was around him, 23 Now it happened when Jōsēph came to his brothers, they stripped Jōsēph of the multi-coloured tunic that was around him,

24 And they took him, and cast him into a pit; and the pit was empty, there was no water in it.

24 And after seizing him, they threw him into the pit. But the pit was empty; it had no water. 24 And after seizing him, they threw him into the pit. But the pit was empty; it had no water.

25 And they sat down to eat bread; and they lifted up their eyes and looked, and, behold, a company of Ishmeelites came from Gilead with their camels carrying spices and balm and myrrh, going to carry it down to Egypt.

25 Then they sat down to eat bread, and when they looked up with their eyes, they saw. And look! Ismaēlite travellers were coming from Galaad, and their camels were loaded with spices and pine resin and oil of myrrh. Now they were travelling to bring them down to Aigypt. 25 Then they sat down to eat bread, and when they looked up with their eyes, they saw. And look! Ismaēlite travellers were coming from Galaad, and their camels were loaded with spices and pine resin and oil of myrrh. Now they were travelling to bring them down to Aigypt.

26 And Judah said to his brothers, “What profit is it if we slay our brother, and conceal his blood?

26 εἶπεν δὲ Ἰούδας πρὸς τοὺς ἀδελφοὺς αὐτοῦ, Τί χρήσιμον, ἐὰν ἀποκτείνωμεν τὸν ἀδελφὸν ἡμῶν καὶ κρύψωμεν τὸ αἷμα αὐτοῦ; 26 εἶπε δὲ Ἰούδας πρὸς τούς ἀδελφοὺς αὐτοῦ· τί χρήσιμον, ἐὰν ἀποκτείνωμεν τὸν ἀδελφὸν ἡμῶν καὶ κρύψωμεν τὸ αἷμα αὐτοῦ;
26 Then Jouda said to his brothers, “What benefit is it if we kill our brother and conceal his blood? 26 Then Jouda said to his brothers, “What benefit is it if we kill our brother and conceal his blood?

27 Come, and let’s sell him to the Ishmeelites, and don’t let our hand be on him; for he is our brother and our flesh.” And his brothers were content.

27 Come, let’s sell him to these Ismaēlites, but don’t let our hands be on him, because he is our brother and our flesh.” And his brothers listened. 27 Come, let’s sell him to these Ismaēlites, but don’t let our hands be on him, because he is our brother and our flesh.” And his brothers listened.

28 Then there passed by Midianites merchantmen; and they drew and lifted up Joseph out of the pit, and sold Joseph to the Ishmeelites for 20 pieces of silver; and they brought Joseph into Egypt.

28 And men were passing by, Madiēnite traders, and they pulled out and brought up Jōsēph out of the pit and sold Jōsēph to the Ismaēlites for twenty gold pieces, and they brought Jōsēph down to Aigypt. 28 And men were passing by, Madiēnite traders, and they pulled out and brought up Jōsēph out of the pit and sold Jōsēph to the Ismaēlites for twenty gold pieces, and they brought Jōsēph down to Aigypt.

29 And Reuben returned to the pit; and, behold, Joseph wasn’t in the pit; and he tore his clothes.

29 Then Rhoubēn returned to the pit, and he did not see Jōsēph in the pit, and he tore his clothes. 29 Then Rhoubēn returned to the pit, and he did not see Jōsēph in the pit, and he tore his clothes.

30 And he returned to his brothers, and said, “The child is not; and I, to which shall I go?”

καὶ εἶπε· τὸ παιδάριον οὐκ ἐστιν, ἐγὼ δὲ ποῦ πορεύομαι ἔτι;
30 And he returned to his brothers and said, “The boy is not there, and I, where shall I yet go?” 30 And he returned to his brothers and said, “The boy is not there, and I, where shall I yet go?”

31 And they took Joseph’s coat, and killed a kid of the goats, and dipped the coat in the blood;

31 Then after they took Jōsēph’s tunic, they slaughtered a kid of the goats and stained the tunic with the blood. 31 Then after they took Jōsēph’s tunic, they slaughtered a kid of the goats and stained the tunic with the blood.

32 And they sent the coat of many colours, and they brought it to their father; and said, “This have we found: know now whether it be your son’s coat or no.”
