Chapter 11

AlexandrinusVaticanus

Contrast the Upright and the Wicked

1 A false balance is abomination to Yahweh; but a just weight is his delight.

1 False balances are an abomination before the Lord; but a just weight is acceptable to him. 1 False balances are an abomination before the Lord; but a just weight is acceptable to him.

2 When pride comes, then comes shame; but with the lowly is wisdom.

2 Wherever pride enters, there will be also disgrace; but the mouth of the lowly meditates wisdom. 2 Wherever pride enters, there will be also disgrace; but the mouth of the lowly meditates wisdom.

3 The integrity of the upright shall guide them; but the perverseness of transgressors shall destroy them.

3 When a just man dies he leaves regret; but the destruction of the ungodly is speedy, and causes joy. 3 When a just man dies he leaves regret; but the destruction of the ungodly is speedy, and causes joy.

4 Riches profit not in the day of wrath; but righteousness delivers from death.

5 The righteousness of the perfect shall direct his way; but the wicked shall fall by his own wickedness.

5 Righteousness traces out blameless paths; but ungodliness encounters unjust dealing. 5 Righteousness traces out blameless paths; but ungodliness encounters unjust dealing.

6 The righteousness of the upright shall deliver them; but transgressors shall be taken in their own naughtiness.

6 The righteousness of upright men delivers them; but transgressors are caught in their own destruction. 6 The righteousness of upright men delivers them; but transgressors are caught in their own destruction.

7 When a wicked man dies, his expectation shall perish; and the hope of unjust men perishes.

7 At the death of a just man his hope doesn’t perish; but the boast of the ungodly perishes. 7 At the death of a just man his hope doesn’t perish; but the boast of the ungodly perishes.

8 The righteous is delivered out of trouble, and the wicked comes in his stead.

8 A righteous man escapes from a snare, and the ungodly man is delivered up in his place. 8 A righteous man escapes from a snare, and the ungodly man is delivered up in his place.

9 A hypocrite with his mouth destroys his neighbour; but through knowledge shall the just be delivered.

9 In the mouth of ungodly men is a snare to citizens; but the understanding of righteous men is prosperous. 9 In the mouth of ungodly men is a snare to citizens; but the understanding of righteous men is prosperous.

10 When it goes well with the righteous, the city rejoices; and when the wicked perish, there is shouting.

10 In the prosperity of righteous men a city prospers. 10 In the prosperity of righteous men a city prospers.

11 By the blessing of the upright the city is exalted; but it is overthrown by the mouth of the wicked.

11 but by the mouth of ungodly men it is overthrown. 11 but by the mouth of ungodly men it is overthrown.

12 He who is void of wisdom despises his neighbour; but a man of understanding holds his peace.

12 A man void of understanding sneers at his fellow citizens; but a sensible man is quiet. 12 A man void of understanding sneers at his fellow citizens; but a sensible man is quiet.

13 A talebearer reveals secrets; but he who is of a faithful spirit conceals the matter.

13 A double-tongued man discloses the secret counsels of an assembly; but he who is faithful in spirit conceals matters. 13 A double-tongued man discloses the secret counsels of an assembly; but he who is faithful in spirit conceals matters.

14 Where no counsel is, the people fall; but in the multitude of counsellers there is safety.

14 They who have no guidance fall like leaves; but in much counsel there is safety. 14 They who have no guidance fall like leaves; but in much counsel there is safety.

15 He who is surety for a stranger shall smart for it; and he who hates being surety is sure.

15 A bad man harms wherever he meets a just man; and he hates the sound of safety. 15 A bad man harms wherever he meets a just man; and he hates the sound of safety.

16 A gracious woman retains honour; and strong men retain riches.

16 A gracious wife brings glory to her husband; but a woman hating righteousness is a theme of dishonour. The slothful come to want; but the diligent support themselves with wealth. 16 A gracious wife brings glory to her husband; but a woman hating righteousness is a theme of dishonour. The slothful come to want; but the diligent support themselves with wealth.

17 The merciful man does good to his own soul; but he who is cruel troubles his own flesh.

17 A merciful man does good to his own soul; but the merciless destroys his own body. 17 A merciful man does good to his own soul; but the merciless destroys his own body.

18 The wicked works a deceitful work; but to him who sows righteousness shall be a sure reward.

18 An ungodly man performs unrighteous works; but the seed of the righteous is a reward of truth. 18 An ungodly man performs unrighteous works; but the seed of the righteous is a reward of truth.

19 As righteousness tends to life; so he who pursues evil pursues it to his own death.

19 A righteous son is born for life; but the persecution of the ungodly ends in death. 19 A righteous son is born for life; but the persecution of the ungodly ends in death.

20 They who are of a deceitful heart are abomination to Yahweh; but such as are upright in their way are his delight.

20 Perverse ways are an abomination to the Lord; but all they who are blameless in their ways are acceptable to him. 20 Perverse ways are an abomination to the Lord; but all they who are blameless in their ways are acceptable to him.

21 Though hand join in hand, the wicked shall not be unpunished; but the seed of the righteous shall be delivered.

21 He who unjustly strikes hands shall not be unpunished; but he who sows righteousness he shall receive a faithful reward. 21 He who unjustly strikes hands shall not be unpunished; but he who sows righteousness he shall receive a faithful reward.

22 As a jewel of gold in a swine’s snout, so is a fair woman which is without discretion.

22 As an ornament in a swine’s snout, so is beauty to an ill-minded women. 22 As an ornament in a swine’s snout, so is beauty to an ill-minded women.

23 The desire of the righteous is only good; but the expectation of the wicked is wrath.

23 All the desire of the righteous is good; but the hope of the ungodly shall perish. 23 All the desire of the righteous is good; but the hope of the ungodly shall perish.

24 There is one who scatters, and yet increases; and there is one who withholds more than is necessary, but it tends to poverty.

24 There are some who scatter their own, and make it more; and there are some also who gather, yet have less. 24 There are some who scatter their own, and make it more; and there are some also who gather, yet have less.

25 The liberal soul shall be made fat; and he who waters shall be watered also himself.

25 Every sincere soul is blessed; but a passionate man is not graceful. 25 Every sincere soul is blessed; but a passionate man is not graceful.

26 He who withholds grain, the people shall curse him; but blessing shall be on the head of him who sells it.

26 May he who hoards corn leave it to the nation; but blessing be on the head of him who gives it. 26 May he who hoards corn leave it to the nation; but blessing be on the head of him who gives it.

27 He who diligently seeks good procures favour; but he who seeks mischief, it shall come to him.

27 He who devises good counsels seeks good favour; but as for him who seeks after evil, evil shall overtake him. 27 He who devises good counsels seeks good favour; but as for him who seeks after evil, evil shall overtake him.

28 He who trusts in his riches shall fall; but the righteous shall flourish as a branch.

28 He who trusts in wealth shall fall; but he who helps righteous men shall rise. 28 He who trusts in wealth shall fall; but he who helps righteous men shall rise.

29 He who troubles his own house shall inherit the wind; and the fool shall be servant to the wise of heart.

29 He who deals not graciously with his own house shall inherit the wind; and the fool shall be servant to the wise man. 29 He who deals not graciously with his own house shall inherit the wind; and the fool shall be servant to the wise man.

30 The fruit of the righteous is a tree of life; and he who wins souls is wise.

30 Out of the fruit of righteousness grows a tree of life; but the souls of transgressors are cut off before their time. 30 Out of the fruit of righteousness grows a tree of life; but the souls of transgressors are cut off before their time.

31 Behold, the righteous shall be recompensed in the earth: much more the wicked and the sinner.

31 εἰ μὲν δίκαιος μόλις σῴζεται, ἀσεβὴς καὶ ἁμαρτωλὸς ποῦ φανεῖται; 31 εἰ μὲν δίκαιος μόλις σώζεται, ἀσεβὴς καὶ ἁμαρτωλὸς ποῦ φανεῖται;
31 If the righteous scarcely be saved, where shall the ungodly and the sinner appear? 31 If the righteous scarcely be saved, where shall the ungodly and the sinner appear?
