Contrast of the Righteous and the Wicked
1 The proverbs of Solomon. A wise son makes a glad father; but a foolish son is the heaviness of his mother.
1 A wise son makes his father glad; but a foolish son is a grief to his mother. | 1 A wise son makes his father glad; but a foolish son is a grief to his mother. |
2 Treasures of wickedness profit nothing; but righteousness delivers from death.
2 Treasures shall not profit the lawless; but righteousness shall deliver from death. | 2 Treasures shall not profit the lawless; but righteousness shall deliver from death. |
3 Yahweh won’t suffer the soul of the righteous to famish; but he casts away the substance of the wicked.
3 The Lord won’t famish a righteous soul; but he will overthrow the life of the ungodly. | 3 The Lord won’t famish a righteous soul; but he will overthrow the life of the ungodly. |
4 He becomes poor who deals with a slack hand; but the hand of the diligent makes rich.
4 Poverty brings a man low; but the hands of the vigorous make rich. | 4 Poverty brings a man low; but the hands of the vigorous make rich. |
4a N/A
4a A son who is instructed shall be wise, and shall use the fool for a servant. | 4a A son who is instructed shall be wise, and shall use the fool for a servant. |
5 He who gathers in summer is a wise son; but he who sleeps in harvest is a son that causes shame.
5 A wise son is saved from heat; but a lawless son is blighted of the winds in harvest. | 5 A wise son is saved from heat; but a lawless son is blighted of the winds in harvest. |
6 Blessings are on the head of the just; but violence covers the mouth of the wicked.
6 The blessing of the Lord is on the head of the just; but untimely grief shall cover the mouth of the ungodly. | 6 The blessing of the Lord is on the head of the just; but untimely grief shall cover the mouth of the ungodly. |
7 The memory of the just is blessed; but the name of the wicked shall rot.
7 The memory of the just is praised; but the name of the ungodly man is extinguished. | 7 The memory of the just is praised; but the name of the ungodly man is extinguished. |
8 The wise in heart will receive commandments; but a prating fool shall fall.
8 A wise man in heart will receive commandments; but he who is unguarded in his lips shall be overthrown in his perverseness. | 8 A wise man in heart will receive commandments; but he who is unguarded in his lips shall be overthrown in his perverseness. |
9 He who walks uprightly walks surely; but he who perverts his ways shall be known.
9 He who walks simply, walks confidently; but he who perverts his ways shall be known. | 9 He who walks simply, walks confidently; but he who perverts his ways shall be known. |
10 He who winks with the eye causes sorrow; but a prating fool shall fall.
10 He who winks with his eyes craftily, procures griefs for men; but he who reproves boldly is a peacemaker. | 10 He who winks with his eyes craftily, procures griefs for men; but he who reproves boldly is a peacemaker. |
11 The mouth of a righteous man is a well of life; but violence covers the mouth of the wicked.
11 There is a fountain of life in the hand of a righteous man; but destruction shall cover the mouth of the ungodly. | 11 There is a fountain of life in the hand of a righteous man; but destruction shall cover the mouth of the ungodly. |
12 Hatred stirs up strifes; but love covers all sins.
12 Hatred stirs up strife; but affection covers all who don’t love strife. | 12 Hatred stirs up strife; but affection covers all who don’t love strife. |
13 In the lips of him who has understanding wisdom is found; but a rod is for the back of him who is void of understanding.
13
13 He who brings forth wisdom from his lips smites the fool with a rod. | 13 He who brings forth wisdom from his lips smites the fool with a rod. |
14 Wise men lay up knowledge; but the mouth of the foolish is near destruction.
14 The wise will hide discretion; but the mouth of the hasty draws near to ruin. | 14 The wise will hide discretion; but the mouth of the hasty draws near to ruin. |
15 The rich man’s wealth is his strong city: the destruction of the poor is their poverty.

15 The wealth of rich men is a strong city; but poverty is the ruin of the ungodly. | 15 The wealth of rich men is a strong city; but poverty is the ruin of the ungodly. |
16 The labour of the righteous tends to life: the fruit of the wicked to sin.
16 The works of the righteous produce life; but the fruits of the ungodly produce sins. | 16 The works of the righteous produce life; but the fruits of the ungodly produce sins. |
17 He is in the way of life that keeps instruction; but he who refuses reproof goes astray.
17 Instruction keeps the right ways of life; but instruction unchastened goes astray. | 17 Instruction keeps the right ways of life; but instruction unchastened goes astray. |
18 He who hides hatred with lying lips, and he who utters a slander, is a fool.
18 Righteous lips cover enmity; but they who utter railings are most foolish. | 18 Righteous lips cover enmity; but they who utter railings are most foolish. |
19 In the multitude of words sin is not lacking; but he who refrains his lips is wise.
19 By a multitude of words you shall not escape sin; but if you refrain your lips you will be prudent. | 19 By a multitude of words you shall not escape sin; but if you refrain your lips you will be prudent. |
20 The tongue of the just is as choice silver: the heart of the wicked is little worth.
20 The tongue of the just is tried silver; but the heart of the ungodly shall fail. | 20 The tongue of the just is tried silver; but the heart of the ungodly shall fail. |
21 The lips of the righteous feed many; but fools die for want of wisdom.
21 The lips of the righteous know sublime truths; but the foolish die in want. | 21 The lips of the righteous know sublime truths; but the foolish die in want. |
22 The blessing of Yahweh, it makes rich, and he adds no sorrow with it.
22 The blessing of the Lord is on the head of the righteous; it enriches him, and grief of heart shall not be added to it. | 22 The blessing of the Lord is on the head of the righteous; it enriches him, and grief of heart shall not be added to it. |
23 It is as sport to a fool to do mischief; but a man of understanding has wisdom.
23 A fool does mischief in sport; but wisdom brings forth prudence for a man. | 23 A fool does mischief in sport; but wisdom brings forth prudence for a man. |
24 The fear of the wicked, it shall come on him; but the desire of the righteous shall be granted.
24 The ungodly is engulfed in destruction; but the desire of the righteous is acceptable. | 24 The ungodly is engulfed in destruction; but the desire of the righteous is acceptable. |
25 As the whirlwind passes, so is the wicked no more; but the righteous is an everlasting foundation.
25 When the storm passes by, the ungodly vanishes away; but the righteous turns aside and escapes for ever. | 25 When the storm passes by, the ungodly vanishes away; but the righteous turns aside and escapes for ever. |
26 As vinegar to the teeth, and as smoke to the eyes, so is the sluggard to those who send him.
26 As a sour grape is hurtful to the teeth, and smoke to the eyes, so iniquity hurts those who practise it. | 26 As a sour grape is hurtful to the teeth, and smoke to the eyes, so iniquity hurts those who practise it. |
27 The fear of Yahweh prolongs days; but the years of the wicked shall be shortened.
27 The fear of the Lord adds length of days; but the years of the ungodly shall be shortened. | 27 The fear of the Lord adds length of days; but the years of the ungodly shall be shortened. |
28 The hope of the righteous shall be gladness; but the expectation of the wicked shall perish.
28 Joy rests long with the righteous; but the hope of the ungodly shall perish. | 28 Joy rests long with the righteous; but the hope of the ungodly shall perish. |
29 The way of Yahweh is strength to the upright; but destruction shall be to the workers of iniquity.
29 The fear of the Lord is a strong hold of the saints; but ruin comes to those who work wickedness. | 29 The fear of the Lord is a strong hold of the saints; but ruin comes to those who work wickedness. |
30 The righteous shall never be removed; but the wicked shall not inhabit the earth.
30 The righteous shall never fail; but the ungodly shall not dwell in the earth. | 30 The righteous shall never fail; but the ungodly shall not dwell in the earth. |
31 The mouth of the just brings forth wisdom; but the deceitful tongue shall be cut out.
31 The mouth of the righteous drops wisdom; but the tongue of the unjust shall perish. | 31 The mouth of the righteous drops wisdom; but the tongue of the unjust shall perish. |
32 The lips of the righteous know what is acceptable; but the mouth of the wicked speaks deceitfullness.
