Chapter 16
Jesus Christ is our example of humility
| For Christ is with those who are humble, not with those who exalt themselves over His flock. |
τὸ σκῆπτρον τῆς μεγαλωσύνης τοῦ θεοῦ, ὁ κύριος Ἰησοῦς Χριστός, οὐκ ἦλθεν ἐν κόμπῳ ἀλαζονείας οὐδὲ ὑπερηφανίας, καίπερ δυνάμενος, ἀλλὰ ταπεινοφρονῶν, καθὼς τὸ πνεῦμα τὸ ἅγιον περὶ αὐτοῦ ἐλάλησεν· φησὶν γάρ· | The sceptre of God’s majesty, our Lord Jesus Christ, didn't come in the fanfare of arrogance or pride. Although He could have done so, He came in humility instead, just as the Holy Spirit spoke about Him. |
To whom was the arm of the Lord revealed? In His presence, we announced that He was like a child or like a root in a thirsty ground. There is no attractiveness or glory in Him. We saw Him. He had no attractiveness or beauty. His appearance was insignificant, less than the attractiveness of other men. He was a man of stripes and toil, knowing how to endure trouble, for His face is turned away. He was without honor and not considered. |
οὗτος τὰς ἁμαρτίας ἡμῶν φέρει καὶ περὶ ἡμῶν ὀδυνᾶται, καὶ ἡμεῖς ἐλογισάμεθα αὐτὸν εἶναι ἐν πόνῳ καὶ ἐν πληγῇ καὶ ἐν κακώσει· | He carried our sins and suffered pain for our sakes. We considered Him to be in toil, stripes, and affliction. |
| He was wounded for our sins. He was afflicted for our transgressions. The punishment that gave us peace was upon Him. With His wounds we are healed. |
πάντες ὡς πρόβατα ἐπλανήθημεν, ἄνθρωπος τῇ ὁδῷ αὐτοῦ ἐπλανήθη· | We all went astray like sheep. Everyone went astray along his own path. |
| And the Lord delivered Him up for our sins. He didn't open His mouth because he has been afflicted. Like a sheep he was led to the slaughter, and he was silent as a lamb before the butcher, so He didn’t open His mouth. In His humiliation, His justice did not emerge. |
| Who will record His (list of) descendants? For His life is removed from the earth. |
| For the transgressions of my people, He came to his death. |
| I will give the wicked in exchange for His burial and the rich in exchange for His death because He did not break the law nor was deception found in His mouth. And the Lord wants to cleanse Him from His stripes. |
| If you make an offering for sin, your soul will see a long list of your posterity. |
| The Lord wants to remove the anguish of His soul, to show Him light, and to shape Him with understanding in order to justify the righteous man who was a good servant for many. He Himself will bear their sins. |
| Therefore He will inherit many and will share the spoils of the strong because His soul was delivered to death and He was counted among the transgressors, |
| and He carried the sins of many, and for their sins He was delivered up" (Isa. 53:1-12). |
| Again He Himself says, "But I am a worm and no man, a reproach of men and despised by the people. |
| All who see Me ridiculed Me. They spoke with their lips and shook their heads saying, 'He hoped in the Lord. Then let God deliver Him.' or 'Let Him save Him for He wants Him.'" (Ps. 22:6-8). |
Dear male friends, you see the example to follow that has been given to us.
If the Lord so humbled himself, what should we do who have come under the yoke of His grace? |
