Esther

9:1  Now in the 12th month, that is, the month Adar, on the 13th day of the same, when the king’s commandment and his decree drew near to be put in execution, in the day that the enemies of the Jews hoped to have power over them, (though it was turned to the contrary, that the Jews had rule over those who hated them;)

9:1 ἐν γὰρ τῷ δωδεκάτῳ μηνὶ τρισκαιδεκάτῃ τοῦ μηνός, ὅς ἐστιν Ἀδάρ, παρῆν τὰ γράμματα τὰ γραφέντα ὑπὸ τοῦ βασιλέως.	9:1  N/A

9:2  The Jews gathered themselves together in their cities throughout all the provinces of the king Ahasuerus, to lay hand on such as sought their hurt; and no man could withstand them; for the fear of them fell on all people.

9:2 ἐν αὐτῇ τῇ ἡμέρᾳ ἀπώλοντο οἱ ἀντικείμενοι τοῖς ἰουδαίοις· οὐδεὶς γὰρ ἀντέστη φοβούμενος αὐτούς.	9:2  N/A

9:3  And all the rulers of the provinces, and the lieutenants, and the deputies, and officers of the king, helped the Jews; because the fear of Mordecai fell on them.

9:3 For the chiefs of the satraps, and the princes and the royal scribes, honoured the Jews; for the fear of Mardochaios lay on them.	9:3 Now the rulers and the tyrants and the satraps and the royal secretaries esteemed the Judeans; for the fear of Mardochaios weighed on them.

9:4  For Mordecai was great in the king’s house, and his fame went out throughout all the provinces; for this man Mordecai grown greater and greater.

9:4 προσέπεσεν γὰρ τὸ πρόσταγμα τοῦ βασιλέως ὀνομασθῆναι ἐν πάσῃ τῇ βασιλείᾳ.	9:4 καὶ προσέπεσεν ἐν Σούσοις ὀνομασθῆναι Ἁμὰν καὶ τοὺς ἀντικειμένους ἐν πάσῃ βασιλείᾳ.

9:5  Thus the Jews smote all their enemies with the stroke of the sword, and slaughter, and destruction, and did what they would to those who hated them.

9:9  And Parmashta, and Arisai, and Aridai, and Vajezatha,

9:10  The ten sons of Haman the son of Hammedatha, the enemy of the Jews, killed they; but on the spoil laid they not their hand.

9:10 τοὺς δέκα υἱοὺς Ἀμὰν Ἁμαδάθου Βουγαίου τοῦ ἐχθροῦ τῶν Ἰουδαίων, καὶ διήρπασαν.	9:10 καὶ τοὺς δέκα υἱοὺς Ἁμὰν Ἁμαδάθου τοῦ Βουγαίου τοῦ ἐχθροῦ τῶν Ἰουδαίων, καὶ διήρπασαν πάντα τὰ αὐτῶν.
9:10 the ten sons of Aman the son of Amadathes the Bugaean, the enemy of the Jews, and they plundered their property on the same day.	9:10 and the ten sons of Haman son of Hamadathos, the Bougean, the enemy of the Judeans, and they plundered all they owned.

9:11  On that day the number of those who were slain in Shushan the palace was brought before the king.

9:12  And the king said to Esther the queen, The Jews have slain and destroyed 500 men in Shushan the palace, and the ten sons of Haman; what have they done in the rest of the king’s provinces? Now what is your petition? And it shall be granted you: or what is your request further? And it shall be done.

9:12 εἶπεν δὲ ὁ βασιλεὺς πρὸς Ἐσθὴρ ἀπώλεσαν οἱ ἰουδαῖοι ἐν Σούσοις τῇ πόλει ἄνδρας πεντακοσίους· ἐν δὲ τῇ περιχώρῳ πῶς οἴει ἐχρήσαντο; τί οὖν ἀξιοῖς ἔτι καὶ ἔσται σοι;	9:12 καὶ εἶπεν ὁ βασιλεὺς τῇ Ἐσθήρ Πῶς σοι οἱ ἐνταῦθα καὶ οἱ ἐν τῇ περιχώρῳ κέχρηνται;
9:12 And the king said to Esther, The Jews have slain 500 men in the city Susa; and how, think you, have they used them in the rest of the country? What then do you yet ask, that it may be done for you?	9:12 And the king said to Esther, “How have your people here and in the surrounding countryside fared?”

9:13  Then said Esther, If it please the king, let it be granted to the Jews which are in Shushan to do tomorrow also according to this day’s decree, and let Haman’s ten sons be hanged on the gallows.

9:13 καὶ εἶπεν Ἐσθὴρ τῷ βασιλεῖ δοθήτω τοῖς ἰουδαίοις χρῆσθαι ὡσαύτως τὴν αὔριον ὥστε τοὺς δέκα υἱοὺς κρεμάσαι Ἀμάν.	9:13 καὶ εἶπεν Ἐσθὴρ Δοθήτω τοῖς ἰουδαίοις οὓς ἐὰν θέλωσιν ἀνελεῖν καὶ διαρπάζειν. καὶ συνεχώρησεν.
9:13 And Esther said to the king, let it be granted to the Jews so to treat them tomorrow as to hand the ten sons of Aman.	9:13 And Esther said, “Let it be granted to the Judeans to destroy and plunder whomever they want.” And he agreed.

9:14  And the king commanded it so to be done; and the decree was given at Shushan; and they hanged Haman’s ten sons.

9:14 καὶ ἐπέτρεψεν οὕτως γενέσθαι καὶ ἐξέθηκε τοῖς ἰουδαίοις τῆς πόλεως τὰ σώματα τῶν υἱῶν Ἀμὰν κρεμάσαι.	9:14  N/A

9:15  For the Jews that were in Shushan gathered themselves together on the 14th day also of the month Adar, and killed 300 men at Shushan; but on the prey they laid not their hand.

9:15 καὶ συνήχθησαν οἱ ἰουδαῖοι ἐν Σούσοις τῇ τεσσαρεσκαιδεκάτῃ τοῦ Ἀδὰρ καὶ ἀπέκτειναν ἄνδρας τριακοσίους καὶ οὐδὲν διήρπασαν.	9:15  N/A
9:15 And the Jews assembled in Susa on the 14th day of Adar, and killed 300 men, but plundered no property.	9:15 N/A

9:16  But the other Jews that were in the king’s provinces gathered themselves together, and stood for their lives, and had rest from their enemies, and killed of their foes 70 and 5000, but they laid not their hands on the prey,

9:16 οἱ δὲ λοιποὶ τῶν Ἰουδαίων οἱ ἐν τῇ βασιλείᾳ συνήχθησαν καὶ ἑαυτοῖς ἐβοήθουν καὶ ἀνεπαύσαντο ἀπὸ τῶν πολεμίων· ἀπώλεσαν γὰρ αὐτῶν μυρίους πεντακισχιλίους τῇ τρισκαιδεκάτῃ τοῦ Ἀδὰρ καὶ οὐδὲν διήρπασαν.	9:16 καὶ ἀπώλεσαν μυριάδας ἑπτὰ καὶ ἑκατὸν ἄνδρας.
9:16 And the rest of the Jews who were in the kingdom assembled, and helped one another, and obtained rest from their enemies; for they destroyed 15,000 of them on the 13th day of Adar, but took no spoil.	9:16 And they killed 70,100 men.

9:17  On the 13th day of the month Adar; and on the 14th day of the same rested they, and made it a day of feasting and gladness.

9:17 καὶ ἀνεπαύσαντο τῇ τεσσαρεσκαιδεκάτῃ τοῦ αὐτοῦ μηνὸς καὶ ἦγον αὐτὴν ἡμέραν ἀναπαύσεως μετὰ χαρᾶς καὶ εὐφροσύνης.	9:17  N/A
9:17 And they rested on the 14th of the same month, and kept it as a day of rest with joy and gladness.	9:17 N/A

9:18  But the Jews that were at Shushan assembled together on the 13th day of it; and on the 14th of it; and on the 15th day of the same they rested, and made it a day of feasting and gladness.

9:18 And the Jews in the city Susa assembled also on the 14th day and rested; and they kept also the 15th with joy and gladness.	9:18 N/A

9:19  Therefore the Jews of the villages, who dwelt in the unwalled towns, made the 14th day of the month Adar a day of gladness and feasting, and a good day, and of sending portions one to another.

9:19 διὰ τοῦτο οὖν οἱ ἰουδαῖοι οἱ διεσπαρμένοι ἐν πάσῃ χώρᾳ τῇ ἔξω ἄγουσιν τὴν τεσσαρεσκαιδεκάτην τοῦ Ἀδὰρ ἡμέραν ἀγαθὴν μετ’ εὐφροσύνης ἀποστέλλοντες μερίδας ἕκαστος τῷ πλησίον, οἱ δὲ κατοικοῦντες ἐν ταῖς μητροπόλεσιν καὶ τὴν πεντεκαιδεκάτην τοῦ Ἀδὰρ ἡμέραν εὐφροσύνην ἀγαθὴν ἄγουσιν ἐξαποστέλλοντες μερίδας τοῖς πλησίον.	9:19  N/A
9:19 On this account then it is that the Jews dispersed in every foreign land keep the 14th of Adar as a holy day with joy, sending portions each to his neighbour.	9:19 N/A

9:20  And Mordecai wrote these things, and sent letters to all the Jews that were in all the provinces of the king Ahasuerus, both near and far,

9:20 ἔγραψεν δὲ Μαρδοχαῖος τοὺς λόγους τούτους εἰς βιβλίον καὶ ἐξαπέστειλεν τοῖς ἰουδαίοις, ὅσοι ἦσαν ἐν τῇ Ἀρταξέρξου βασιλείᾳ, τοῖς ἐγγὺς καὶ τοῖς μακράν,	9:20 Ἔγραψε δὲ Μαρδοχαῖος τοὺς λόγους τούτους εἰς βιβλίον καὶ ἐξαπέστειλε τοῖς ἰουδαίοις, οἳ ἦσαν ἐν τῇ Ἀσσυήρου βασιλείᾳ, τοῖς μακρὰν καὶ τοῖς ἐγγύς,
9:20 And Mardochaios wrote these things in a book, and sent them to the Jews, as many as were in the kingdom of Artaxerxes, both those who were near and those who were afar off,	9:20 So Mardochaios recorded these things in a book and sent it to the Judeans who were in the kingdom of Assyeros—both far and near—

9:21  To establish this among them, that they should keep the 14th day of the month Adar, and the 15th day of the same, yearly,

9:21 στῆσαι τὰς ἡμέρας ταύτας ἀγαθὰς ἄγειν τε τὴν τεσσαρεσκαιδεκάτην καὶ τὴν πεντεκαιδεκάτην τοῦ Ἀδὰρ –	9:21 στῆσαι τὰς ἡμέρας ταύτας εἰς ὕμνους καὶ εὐφροσύνας ἀντὶ ὀδυνῶν καὶ πένθους, τὴν τεσσαρεσκαιδεκάτην καὶ τὴν πεντεκαιδεκάτην.
9:21 to establish these as joyful days, and to keep the 14th and 15th of Adar;	9:21 to keep these days for hymns and rejoicing in the place of pain and grief, the fourteenth and fifteenth.

9:22  As the days in which the Jews rested from their enemies, and the month which was turned to them from sorrow to joy, and from mourning into a good day: that they should make them days of feasting and joy, and of sending portions one to another, and gifts to the poor.

9:22 ἐν γὰρ ταύταις ταῖς ἡμέραις ἀνεπαύσαντο οἱ ἰουδαῖοι ἀπὸ τῶν ἐχθρῶν αὐτῶν – καὶ τὸν μῆνα, ἐν ᾧ ἐστράφη αὐτοῖς ὃς ἦν Ἀδὰρ ἀπὸ πένθους εἰς χαρὰν καὶ ἀπὸ ὀδύνης εἰς ἀγαθὴν ἡμέραν, ἄγειν ὅλον ἀγαθὰς ἡμέρας γάμων καὶ εὐφροσύνης ἐξαποστέλλοντας μερίδας τοῖς φίλοις καὶ τοῖς πτωχοῖς.	9:22 καὶ ἀπέστειλε μερίδας τοῖς πένησιν, καὶ προσεδέξαντο.
9:22 for on these days the Jews obtained rest from their enemies; and as to the month, which was Adar, in which a change was made for them, from mourning to joy, and from sorrow to a good day, to spend the whole of it in good days of feasting and gladness, sending portions to their friends, and to the poor.	9:22 And he sent portions to the poor, and they welcomed them.

9:23  And the Jews undertook to do as they had begun, and as Mordecai had written to them;

9:23 καὶ προσεδέξαντο οἱ ἰουδαῖοι, καθὼς ἔγραψεν αὐτοῖς ὁ Μαρδοχαῖος,	9:23  N/A

9:24  Because Haman the son of Hammedatha, the Agagite, the enemy of all the Jews, had devised against the Jews to destroy them, and had cast Pur, that is, the lot, to consume them, and to destroy them;

9:25  But when Esther came before the king, he commanded by letters that his wicked device, which he devised against the Jews, should return on his own head, and that he and his sons should be hanged on the gallows.

9:25 καὶ ὡς εἰσῆλθεν πρὸς τὸν βασιλέα λέγων κρεμάσαι τὸν Μαρδοχαῖον· ὅσα δὲ ἐπεχείρησεν ἐπάξαι ἐπὶ τοὺς Ἰουδαίους κακά, ἐπ’ αὐτὸν ἐγένοντο, καὶ ἐκρεμάσθη αὐτὸς καὶ τὰ τέκνα αὐτοῦ.	9:25  N/A

9:26  Why they called these days Purim after the name of Pur. Therefore for all the words of this letter, and of what they had seen concerning this matter, and which had come to them,

9:26 διὰ τοῦτο ἐπεκλήθησαν αἱ ἡμέραι αὗται Φρουραὶ διὰ τοὺς κλήρους, ὅτι τῇ διαλέκτῳ αὐτῶν καλοῦνται Φρουραί, διὰ τοὺς λόγους τῆς ἐπιστολῆς ταύτης καὶ ὅσα πεπόνθασιν διὰ ταῦτα καὶ ὅσα αὐτοῖς ἐγένετο·	9:26 διὰ τοῦτο ἐκλήθησαν αἱ ἡμέραι αὗται Φουραια διὰ τοὺς κλήρους τοὺς πεσόντας εἰς τὰς ἡμέρας ταύτας εἰς μνημόσυνον.
9:26 Therefore these days were called Phrurae, because of the lots; (for in their language they are called Phrurae;) because of the words of this letter, and because of all they suffered on this account, and all that happened to them.	9:26 Because of this these days are called Phouraia, because of the lots that fell on these days as a memorial.

9:27  The Jews ordained, and took on them, and on their descendants, and on all such as joined themselves to them, so as it should not fail, that they would keep these two days according to their writing, and according to their appointed time every year;

9:27 καὶ ἔστησεν καὶ προσεδέχοντο οἱ ἰουδαῖοι ἐφ’ ἑαυτοῖς καὶ ἐπὶ τῷ σπέρματι αὐτῶν καὶ ἐπὶ τοῖς προστεθειμένοις ἐπ’ αὐτῶν οὐδὲ μὴν ἄλλως χρήσονται· αἱ δὲ ἡμέραι αὗται μνημόσυνον ἐπιτελούμενον κατὰ γενεὰν καὶ γενεὰν καὶ πόλιν καὶ πατριὰν καὶ χώραν·	9:27  N/A
9:27 And Mardochaios established it, and the Jews took on themselves, and on their descendants, and on those who were joined to them to observe it, neither would they on any account behave differently; but these days were to be a memorial kept in every generation, and city, and family, and province.	9:27 N/A

9:28  And that these days should be remembered and kept throughout every generation, every family, every province, and every city; and that these days of Purim should not fail from among the Jews, nor the memorial of them perish from their descendants.

9:28 αἱ δὲ ἡμέραι αὗται τῶν Φρουραὶ ἀχθήσονται εἰς τὸν ἅπαντα χρόνον, καὶ τὸ μνημόσυνον αὐτῶν οὐ μὴ ἐκλίπῃ ἐκ τῶν γενεῶν.	9:28  N/A

9:29  Then Esther the queen, the daughter of Abihail, and Mordecai the Jew, wrote with all authority, to confirm this second letter of Purim.

9:31  To confirm these days of Purim in their times appointed, according as Mordecai the Jew and Esther the queen had enjoined them, and as they had decreed for themselves and for their descendants, the matters of the fastings and their cry.
