Exodus

1 In the third month, when the sons of Israēl were gone forth out of the land of Egypt, the same day came they into the wilderness of Sinai.

3 And Moses went up to God, and Yahweh called to him out of the mountain, saying, “Thus you shall say to the house of Jacōb, and tell the sons of Israēl;

5 Now therefore, if you will obey my voice indeed, and keep my covenant, then you shall be a special treasure to me above all people; for all the earth is mine.

5 And now if by paying attention you should listen to my voice and keep my covenant, you shall be for me a people distinctive from all nations. 7 And Moses came and called for the elders of the people, and laid before their faces all these words which Yahweh commanded him.

8 And all the people answered together, and said, “All that Yahweh has spoken we will do.” And Moses returned the words of the people to Yahweh.

9 And Yahweh said to Moses, “Lo, I come to you in a thick cloud, that the people may hear when I speak with you, and believe you forever.” And Moses told the words of the people to Yahweh.

9 Then the Lord said to Moses, “Look! I am coming to you in a pillar of cloud in order that the people may listen while I speak to you and they may trust you forever.” And Moses reported the words of the people to the Lord.	9 Then the Lord said to Moses, “Look! 10 And Yahweh said to Moses, “Go to the people, and consecrate them today and tomorrow, and let them wash their clothes,

12 And you shall set bounds to the people all around, saying, ‘Take heed to yourselves, that you don’t go up into the mount, or touch the border of it: whoever touches the mount shall be surely put to death.

12 And you shall specify limits for the people around, saying, ‛Pay attention about going on the mountain and touching it at all. 13 There shall not a hand touch it, but he shall surely be stoned, or shot through; whether it is a beast or man, it shall not live.’ When the trumpet sounds long, they shall come up to the mount.”

14 And Moses went down from the mount to the people, and consecrated the people; and they washed their clothes.

15 And he said to the people, “Be ready against the third day: don’t come at your wives.”

16 And it happened on the third day in the morning, that there were thunders and lightnings, and a thick cloud on the mount, and the voice of the trumpet exceeding loud; so that all the people that was in the camp trembled.

16 ἐγένετο δὲ τῇ ἡμέρᾳ τῇ τρίτῃ γενηθέντος πρὸς ὄρθρον καὶ ἐγίνοντο φωναὶ καὶ ἀστραπαὶ καὶ νεφέλη γνοφώδης ἐπ’ ὄρους Σινᾶ, φωνὴ τῆς σάλπιγγος ἤχει μέγα· καὶ ἐπτοήθη πᾶς ὁ λαὸς ὁ ἐν τῇ παρεμβολῇ.	16 ἐγένετο δὲ τῇ ἡμέρᾳ τῇ τρίτῃ γενηθέντος πρὸς ὄρθρον καὶ ἐγίνοντο φωναὶ καὶ ἀστραπαὶ καὶ νεφέλη γνοφώδης ἐπ’ ὄρους Σινά, φωνὴ τῆς σάλπιγγος ἤχει μέγα· καὶ ἐπτοήθη πᾶς ὁ λαὸς ὁ ἐν τῇ παρεμβολῇ.

17 And Moses brought forth the people out of the camp to meet with God; and they stood at the nether part of the mount.

18 And mount Sinai was altogether in smoke, because Yahweh descended on it in fire; and the smoke of it ascended as the smoke of a furnace, and the whole mount quaked greatly.

19 And when the voice of the trumpet sounded long, and grown louder and louder, Moses spoke, and God answered him by a voice.

20 And Yahweh came down on mount Sinai, on the top of the mount; and Yahweh called Moses up to the top of the mount; and Moses went up.

21 And Yahweh said to Moses, “Go down, charge the people, lest they break through to Yahweh to gaze, and many of them perish.

22 And let the priests also, who come near to Yahweh, consecrate themselves, lest Yahweh break forth on them.”

23 And Moses said to Yahweh, “The people cannot come up to mount Sinai; for you charged us, saying, ‘Set bounds about the mount, and consecrate it.’ ”

23 And Moses said to God, “” The people will be unable to climb up to the Sina mountain. 24 And Yahweh said to him, “Away, go down, and you shall come up, you, and Aaron with you; but don’t let the priests and the people break through to come up to Yahweh, lest he break forth on them.”
