4 And the name of the other was Eliezer; “for the God of my father,” said he, “was my help, and delivered me from the sword of Pharaoh.”

5 And Jethro, Moses’ father-in-law, came with his sons and his wife to Moses into the wilderness, where he encamped at the mount of God.

6 And he said to Moses, “I your father-in-law Jethro am come to you, and your wife, and her two sons with her.”

6 And it was reported to Moses, saying, “Look! Jothor, your father-in-law, is coming to you, and your wife and two sons with him.” 6 And it was reported to Moses, saying, “Look! Jothor, your father-in-law, is coming to you, and your wife and two sons with him.”

7 And Moses went out to meet his father-in-law, and did obeisance, and kissed him; and they asked each other of their welfare; and they came into the tent.

8 And Moses told his father-in-law all that Yahweh had done to Pharaoh and to the Egyptians for Israēl’s sake, and all the travail that had come on them by the way, and how Yahweh delivered them.

8 And Moses related to his father-in-law all that the Lord did to Pharaō and the Aigyptians for the sake of Israēl and all the hardship that happened to them on the way and that the Lord delivered them from the hand of Pharaō and from the hand of the Aigyptians. 8 And Moses related to his father-in-law all that the Lord did to Pharaō and the Aigyptians for the sake of Israēl and all the hardship that happened to them on the way and that the Lord delivered them from the hand of Pharaō and from the hand of the Aigyptians.

9 And Jethro rejoiced for all the goodness which Yahweh had done to Israēl, whom he had delivered out of the hand of the Egyptians.

10 And Jethro said, “Blessed be Yahweh, who has delivered you out of the hand of the Egyptians, and out of the hand of Pharaoh, who has delivered the people from under the hand of the Egyptians.

10 And Jothor said, “Blessed be the Lord, because he delivered his people from the hand of the Aigyptians and from the hand of Pharaō. 10 And Jothor said, “Blessed be the Lord, because he delivered his people from the hand of the Aigyptians and from the hand of Pharaō.

11 Now I know that Yahweh is greater than all gods; for in the thing in which they dealt proudly he was above them.”

11 Now I know that the Lord is great beyond all the gods, on account of this that they attacked them.” 11 Now I know that the Lord is great beyond all the gods, on account of this that they attacked them.”

12 And Jethro, Moses’ father-in-law, took a burnt offering and sacrifices for God; and Aaron came, and all the elders of Israēl, to eat bread with Moses’ father-in-law before God.

13 And it happened on the next day, that Moses sat to judge the people; and the people stood by Moses from the morning to the evening.

13 And it happened after the next day, Moses sat down to judge the people. Now all the people had stood near Moses from morning to evening. 13 And it happened after the next day, Moses sat down to judge the people. Now all the people had stood near Moses from morning to evening.

14 And when Moses’ father-in-law saw all that he did to the people, he said, “What is this thing that you do to the people? Why do you sit alone, and all the people stand by you from morning to evening?”

14 καὶ ἰδὼν Ἰοθὸρ πάντα, ὅσα ἐποίει τῷ λαῷ, λέγει τί τοῦτο, σὺ ποιεῖς τῷ λαῷ;
διὰ τί σὺ κάθησαι μόνος, πᾶς δὲ λαὸς παρέστηκέν σοί ἀπὸ πρωίθεν ἕως δείλης;
14 καὶ ἰδὼν Ἰοθὸρ πάντα ὅσα ποιεῖ τῷ λαῷ, λέγει· τί τοῦτο, ὃν σὺ ποιεῖς τῷ λαῷ;
διατί σὺ κάθησαι μόνος, πᾶς δὲ λαὸς παρέστηκέ σοι ἀπὸ πρωΐθεν ἕως δείλης;
14 And after Jothor saw all that he was doing for the people, he says, “What is this that you are doing for the people? Why do you sit alone, but all the people stand near you from morning to evening?” 14 And after Jothor saw all that he was doing for the people, he says, “What is this that you are doing for the people? Why do you sit alone, but all the people stand near you from morning to evening?”

15 And Moses said to his father-in-law, “Because the people come to me to inquire of God.

15 And Moses says to his father-in-law, “Because the people come to me to seek judgment from God. 15 And Moses says to his father-in-law, “Because the people come to me to seek judgment from God.

16 When they have a matter, they come to me; and I judge between one and another, and I do make them know the statutes of God, and his laws.”

16 For whenever a dispute happens to them and they come to me, I decide for each person, and I teach them the ordinances of God and his law.” 16 For whenever a dispute happens to them and they come to me, I decide for each person, and I teach them the ordinances of God and his law.”

Jethro Counsels Moses

17 And Moses’ father-in-law said to him, “The thing that you do is not good.

17 Then the father-in-law of Moses said to him, “You are not doing this thing correctly, 17 Then the father-in-law of Moses said to him, “You are not doing this thing correctly,

18 You will surely wear away, both you, and this people that is with you; for this thing is too heavy for you; you are not able to perform it yourself alone.

18 You will be destroyed with unbearable destruction, both you and all this people who are with you. This matter is too heavy for you, you won’t be able to do it alone. 18 You will be destroyed with unbearable destruction, both you and all this people who are with you. This matter is too heavy for you, you won’t be able to do it alone.

19 Listen now to my voice, I will give you counsel, and God shall be with you. Be for the people toward God, so that you may bring the causes to God.

19 Now then listen to me, and I will advise you, and God will be with you. You are become for the people the things pertaining to God, and you shall bring their cases to God, 19 Now then listen to me, and I will advise you, and God will be with you. You are become for the people the things pertaining to God, and you shall bring their cases to God,

20 And you shall teach them ordinances and laws, and shall show them the way in which they must walk, and the work that they must do.

20 and you shall inform the ordinances of God and his law to them, and you shall show to them the ways that they shall walk in and the works that they shall do. 20 and you shall inform the ordinances of God and his law to them, and you shall show to them the ways that they shall walk in and the works that they shall do.

21 Moreover you shall provide out of all the people able men, such as fear God, men of truth, hating covetousness; and place such over them, to be rulers of thousands, and rulers of hundreds, rulers of fifties, and rulers of tens.

21 And you, search for yourself from all the people capable, god-fearing men, righteous men, who hate arrogance, and you shall set them over them as leaders of thousands and leaders of hundreds and leaders of fifties and leaders of tens, 21 And you, search for yourself from all the people capable, god-fearing men, righteous men, who hate arrogance, and you shall set them over them as leaders of thousands and leaders of hundreds and leaders of fifties and leaders of tens,

22 And let them judge the people at all seasons; and it shall be, that every great matter they shall bring to you, but every small matter they shall judge; so shall it be easier for yourself, and they shall bear the burden with you.

22 and they shall judge the people every hour. Now they shall bring to you the difficult matter, but the smaller matters of judgment they themselves shall judge, and they will make it easier for you, and they will co-operate with you. 22 and they shall judge the people every hour. Now they shall bring to you the difficult matter, but the smaller matters of judgment they themselves shall judge, and they will make it easier for you, and they will co-operate with you.

23 If you shall do this thing, and God command you so, then you shall be able to endure, and all this people shall also go to their place in peace.”

23 If you do this thing, God will strengthen you, and you will be able to stand, and all this people will go to their own place with peace.” 23 If you do this thing, God will strengthen you, and you will be able to stand, and all this people will go to their own place with peace.”

24 So Moses listened to the voice of his father-in-law, and did all that he had said.

24 Then Moses listened to the voice of his father-in-law and did what he said to him. 24 Then Moses listened to the voice of his father-in-law and did what he said to him.

25 And Moses chose able men out of all Israēl, and made them heads over the people, rulers of thousands, rulers of hundreds, rulers of fifties, and rulers of tens.

25 And Moses chose capable men from all Israēl and made them over them leaders of thousands and leaders of hundreds and leaders of fifties and leaders of tens. 25 And Moses chose capable men from all Israēl and made them over them leaders of thousands and leaders of hundreds and leaders of fifties and leaders of tens.

26 And they judged the people at all seasons: the hard causes they brought to Moses, but every small matter they judged themselves.

26 And they judged the people every hour. Now the difficult matter they brought to Moses, but every smaller matter they themselves judged. 26 And they judged the people every hour. Now the difficult matter they brought to Moses, but every smaller matter they themselves judged.

27 And Moses let his father-in-law depart; and he went his way into his own land.

27 Then Moses sent away his own father-in-law, and he went away to his land. 27 Then Moses sent away his own father-in-law, and he went away to his land.
