Chapter 4

AlexandrinusVaticanus

1 And the sons of Israēl again did evil in the sight of Yahweh, after Ehud died.

1 And the sons of Israēl persisted to do what was evil before the Lord. 1 And the sons of Israēl persisted to do what was evil before the Lord, and Aōd died.

2 And Yahweh sold them into the hand of Jabin king of Canaan, who reigned in Hazor; the captain of his army was Sisera, who dwelt in Harosheth of the Gentiles.

2 And the Lord gave them up in the hand of King Jabin of Chanaan, who reigned in Asōr, and the leader of his army was Sisara, and he lived in Arisōth of the nations. 2 And the Lord gave them up in the hand of King Jabin of Chanaan, who reigned in Asōr, and the leader of his army was Sisara, and he lived in Arisōth of the nations.

3 And the sons of Israēl cried to Yahweh; for he had 900 chariots of iron; and for twenty years, he greatly oppressed the sons of Israēl.

3 And the sons of Israēl cried out to the Lord, because he had 900 iron chariots and by force he oppressed Israēl for 20 years. 3 And the sons of Israēl cried out to the Lord, because he had 900 iron chariots and by force he oppressed Israēl for 20 years.

4 And Deborah, a prophetess, the wife of Lapidoth, judged Israēl at that time.

4 And Debbōra, a woman, a prophetess, wife of Laphidōth; she judged Israēl during that time. 4 And Debbōra, a woman, a prophetess, wife of Laphidōth; she judged Israēl during that time.

5 And she dwelt under the palm tree of Deborah between Ramah and Bethel in mount Ephraim; and the sons of Israēl came up to her for judgment.

5 And she used to sit under the palm of Debbōra between Rhama and Baithēl in the mountain of Ephraim, and the sons of Israēl used to come up to her there to judge. 5 And she used to sit under the palm of Debbōra between Rhama and Baithēl in the mountain of Ephraim, and the sons of Israēl used to come up to her for judgment.

6 And she sent and called Barak the son of Abinoam out of Kedesh-Naphtali, and said to him, “Didn’t Yahweh Elohim of Israēl command, saying, ‘Go and draw toward mount Tabor, and take with you 10,000 men of the sons of Naphtali and of the sons of Zebulun?

6 And Debbōra sent and called Barak son of Abineem from Kedes Nephthali and said to him, “Are you not the one whom the Lord, the God of Israēl, commanded? And you shall go away to Mount Thabōr and bring with you 10,000 men out of the sons of Nephthali and from the sons of Zaboulōn.” 6 And Debbōra sent and called Barak son of Abineem from Kadēs Nephthali and said to him, “Didn’t the Lord, the God of Israēl, command you? And you shall go away to Mount Thabōr and bring with you 10,000 men out of the sons of Nephthali and out of the sons of Zaboulōn.”

7 And I will draw the captain of Jabin’s army to you, along with his chariots and his multitude to the river Kishon Sisera; and I will deliver him into your hand.’ ”

7 καὶ ἀπάξω πρὸς σὲ εἰς τὸν χειμάρρουν Κισῶν τὸν Σισάρα ἄρχοντα τῆς δυνάμεως Ἰαβὶν καὶ τὰ ἅρματα αὐτοῦ καὶ τὸ πλῆθος αὐτοῦ καὶ παραδώσω αὐτὸν ἐν τῇ χειρί σου. 7 καὶ ἐπάξω πρὸς σὲ εἰς τὸν χειμάρρουν Κισῶν τὸν Σισάρα ἄρχοντα τῆς δυνάμεως Ἰαβίν, καὶ τὰ ἅρματα αὐτοῦ καὶ τὸ πλῆθος αὐτοῦ, καὶ παραδώσω αὐτὸν εἰς τὰς χεῖράς σου;
7 And to the rushing stream Kisōn, I will bring out to you Sisara, commander of Jabin’s army, and his chariots and his army, and I will deliver him in your hand. 7 And to the rushing stream Kisōn, I will bring out to you Sisara, commander of Jabin’s army, and his chariots and his army, and I will deliver him in your hands.

8 And Barak said to her, “If you will go with me, then I will go; but if you won’t go with me, then I won’t go.”

8 And Barak said to her, “If you will go with me, I will go, and if you won’t go with me, I won’t go, because I don’t know the day on which the Lord will send his angel on a good journey with me.” 8 And Barak said to her, “If you will go with me, I will go, and if you won’t go, I won’t go, because I don’t know the day on which the Lord will send his angel on a good journey with me.”

9 And she said, “I will surely go with you; however the journey that you take shall not be for your honour; for Yahweh shall sell Sisera into the hand of a woman.” And Deborah arose, and went with Barak to Kedesh.

9 And Debbōra said to him, “While going I will go with you, but know that it will not be your success for the journey on which you are going, because the Lord will give up Sisara in the hand of a woman.” And Debbōra got up and went with Barak to Kedes. 9 And she said, “While going I will go with you, but know that it will not be your success on the journey on which you are going, because the Lord will give up Sisara in the hand of a woman.” And Debbōra got up and went with Barak from Kadēs.

10 And Barak called Zebulun and Naphtali to Kedesh; and he went up with 10,000 men at his feet; and Deborah went up with him.

10 And Barak summoned Zaboulōn and Nephthali to Kedes, and 10,000 warriors went up at his heels, and Debbōra went up with him. 10 And Barak called out to Zaboulōn and Nephthali from Kadēs, and 10,000 warriors went up at his heels, and Debbōra went up with him.

11 Now Heber the Kenite, who was of the sons of Hobab the father-in-law of Moses, had severed himself from the Kenites, and set up his tent in the plain of Zaanaim, which is by Kedesh.

11 And the companions of the Kinite separated from the sons of Jōbab, an in-law of Moses, and he had set up his tent by an oak of rests, which is near Kedes. 11 And Chaber the Kinite separated from Kaina, from the sons of Jōbab, an in-law of Moses, and he had set up his tent as far away as an oak of the greedy, which is near Kedes.

12 And they showed Sisera that Barak the son of Abinoam had gone up to mount Tabor.

12 And they told Sisara that Barak son of Abineem went up to Mount Thabōr, 12 And Sisara was told that Barak son of Abineem went up into Mount Thabōr,

13 And Sisera gathered together all his chariots, even 900 chariots of iron, and all the people who were with him, from Harosheth of the Gentiles to the river of Kishon.

13 and Sisara called out all his chariots, for he had 900 iron chariots, and all the people who were with him, from Arisōth of the nations to the rushing stream Kisōn. 13 and Sisara called out all his chariots, 900 iron chariots, and all the people who were with him, from Arisōth of the nations to the rushing stream Kisōn.

14 And Deborah said to Barak, “Up! For this is the day in which Yahweh has delivered Sisera into your hand. Hasn’t Yahweh gone out before you?” So Barak went down from mount Tabor with 10,000 men behind him.

14 καὶ εἶπεν Δεββώρα πρὸς Βαρὰκ Ἀνάστηθι, ὅτι αὕτη ἡμέρα, ἐν παρέδωκεν κύριος τὸν Σισάρα ἐν χειρί σου οὐκ ἰδοὺ κύριος ἐλεύσεται ἔμπροσθέν σου;
14 And Debbōra said to Barak, “Get up! Because this is the day in which the Lord has given Sisara in your hand. Look! will the Lord not go before you?” And Barak went down from Mount Thabōr, and 10,000 men behind him. 14 And Debbōra said to Barak, “Get up! Because this is the day in which the Lord has given Sisara in your hand. Because the Lord will go out before you.” And Barak went down from Mount Thabōr, and 10,000 men behind him.

15 And Yahweh defeated Sisera, and all his chariots, and all his army, with the edge of the sword before Barak; so that Sisera dismounted from his chariot, and fled away on foot.

15 And the Lord confused Sisara and all his chariots and all his army camp by the edge of the sword before Barak, and Sisara got down from his chariot and fled away on his feet, 15 And the Lord confused Sisara and all his chariots and all his army camp by the edge of the sword before Barak, and Sisara got down from his chariot and fled away on his feet,

16 But Barak pursued after the chariots, and after the army, to Harosheth of the Gentiles; and all the army of Sisera fell on the edge of the sword; and not a man was left.

16 and Barak was pursuing after the chariots and after the camp, all the way to the thicket of the nations. And all the camp of Sisara fell by the edge of the sword; not even one was left. 16 and Barak was pursuing after the chariots and after the camp, all the way to Arisōth of the nations. And the entire camp of Sisara fell by the edge of the sword; not even one was left.

17 However Sisera fled away on foot to the tent of Jael the wife of Heber the Kenite; for there was peace between Jabin the king of Hazor and the house of Heber the Kenite.

17 And Sisara retreated on his feet to the tent of Jaēl, wife of Chaber the Kinite, because there was peace between King Jabin of Asōr and between the house of Chaber the Kinite. 17 17 And Sisara fled on his feet to the tent of Jaēl, wife of Chaber, companion of the Kinite, because there was peace between King Jabin of Asōr and between the house of Chaber the Kinite.

18 And Jael went out to meet Sisera, and said to him, “Turn in, my lord, turn in to me; fear not.” And when he had turned in to her into the tent, she covered him with a rug.

18 And Jaēl came out to meet Sisara and said to him, “Come aside, my lord, come aside to me; fear not.” And he came aside to her, into the tent, and she covered him with her leather cover. 18 And Jaēl came out to meet Sisara and said to him, “Turn aside, my lord, turn aside to me; fear not.” And he turned aside to her, into the tent, and she covered him with a blanket.

19 And he said to her, “Please give me a little water to drink; for I am thirsty.” And she opened a bottle of milk, and gave him a drink, and covered him.

19 And Sisara said to her, “Please give me a little water, because I am thirsty.” And she opened the leather bag of milk and gave him a drink and covered up his face. 19 And Sisara said to her, “Please give me a little water to drink, because I am thirsty.” And she opened the leather bag of milk and gave him a drink and covered him.

20 Again he said to her, “Stand in the door of the tent, and if anyone comes and asks you saying, ‘Is there any man here?’ Then you shall say, ‘No.’ ”

20 καὶ εἶπεν πρὸς αὐτήν Στῆθι ἐν τῇ θύρᾳ τῆς σκηνῆς, καὶ ἔσται ἐάν τις ἔλθῃ πρὸς σὲ καὶ ἐρωτήσῃ σὲ καὶ εἴπῃ σοί Ἔστιν ἐνταῦθα ἀνήρ;
20 καὶ εἶπεν πρὸς αὐτὴν Σισάρα στῆθι δὴ ἐπὶ τὴν θύραν τῆς σκηνῆς, καὶ ἔσται ἐὰν ἀνὴρ ἔλθῃ πρὸς σὲ καὶ ἐρωτήσῃ σὲ καὶ εἴπῃ Εἰ ἔστιν ὧδε ἀνήρ;
20 And he said to her, “Stand at the entrance of the tent, and it shall be, if anyone comes to you and asks you and says to you, ‛Is a man in here?’ and you will say, ‛There is not.’ ” And she covered him up with her leather cover. 20 And Sisara said to her, “Please stand now at the entrance of the tent, and it shall be, if a man comes to you and asks you and says, ‛Is there a man here?’ and you will say, ‛There is not.’ ”

21 Then Jael Heber’s wife took tent peg, and took a hammer in her hand, and went softly to him, and smote the peg into his temples, and drove it into the ground; for he was fast asleep and weary. So he died.

21 And Jaēl, wife of Chaber, took the tent peg and put the hammer in her hand and went in toward him quietly and hammered the peg into his jaw and pierced it through in the ground. And as for him, he writhed between her knees, and he expired and died. 21 And Jaēl, wife of Chaber, took the tent peg and put the hammer in her hand and went in toward him in secret and impaled the peg in his temple, and it went through in the ground. And as for him, he was startled and darkened and he died.

22 And, suddenly, as Barak pursued Sisera, Jael came out to meet him, and said to him, “Come, and I will show you the man whom you seek.” And when he came into her tent, behold, Sisera lay dead, and the peg was in his temples.

22 And look! Barak was pursuing Sisara, and Jaēl went out to meet him and said to him, “Come here, and I will show you the man whom you are seeking.” And he went in to her, and look! Sisara, a fallen corpse, and the tent peg in his jaw. 22 And look! Barak was pursuing Sisara, and Jaēl went out to meet him and said to him, “Come here, and I will show you the man whom you are seeking.” And he went in to her, and look! Sisara lying a corpse, and the tent peg in his temple.

23 So on that day, God subdued Jabin the king of Canaan before the sons of Israēl.

23 And on that day, the Lord God humbled King Jabin of Chanaan before the sons of Israēl. 23 And on that day, God routed King Jabin of Chanaan before the sons of Israēl.

24 And the hand of the sons of Israēl prospered, and prevailed against Jabin the king of Canaan, until they had destroyed Jabin king of Canaan.

24 And the hand of the sons of Israēl went out, going and becoming hard against King Jabin of Chanaan until they destroyed him. 24 And the hand of the sons of Israēl was going out, going and becoming hard against King Jabin of Chanaan until they destroyed King Jabin of Chanaan.
