Chapter 3
Alexandrinus | Vaticanus |

1 Now these are the nations which Yahweh left, to prove Israēl by them, even as many of Israēl as had not experienced all the wars of Canaan;
1 And Jēsous left these nations so as to test Israēl by means of them, all those who had no experience of all the wars of Chanaan, | 1 And these are the nations, those that the Lord left so as to test Israēl by means of them, all those who had no experience of the wars of Chanaan, |
2 only that the generations of the sons of Israēl might be taught to know war, at least those who didn’t experience it previously;
2 only on account of the generations of the sons of Israēl, to teach them war; only, those before them didn’t know them; | 2 only on account of the generations of Israēl’s sons, to teach them war; only, those before them didn’t know them; |
3 namely, the five lords of the Philistines, and all the Canaanites, and the Sidonians, and the Hivites who dwelt in mount Lebanon, from mount Baalhermon to the entering in of Hamath.
3 the five satrapies of the allophyles and all the Chananite and the Sidōnian and the Evites who lived on Libanon, from the mountain Balaermōn as far as Lobōēmath. | 3 the five satrapies of the allophyles and the full number of the Chananite and the Sidonian and the Evites who lived on Lebanon, from the mountain Aermōn as far as Labōemath. |
4 And they were left to prove Israēl by them, to know whether they would listen to the commandments of Yahweh, which he commanded their fathers by the hand of Moses.
4 And it came to be, so as to test Israēl by means of them, to know if they would obey the commandments of the Lord, which he commanded their fathers by the hand of Moses. | 4 And it came to be, so as to test Israēl by means of them, to know if they would obey the commandments of the Lord, which he commanded their fathers by the hand of Moses. |
5 And the sons of Israēl dwelt among the Canaanites, Hittites, and Amorites, and Perizzites, and Hivites, and Jebusites.
5 And the sons of Israēl lived in the midst of the Chananite and the Chettite and the Amorrite and the Pherezite and the Evites and the Jebousite, | 5 And the sons of Israēl lived in the midst of the Chananite and the Chettite and the Amorrite and the Pherezite and the Evites and the Jebousite, |
6 And they took their daughters to be their wives, and gave their daughters to their sons, and served their gods.
6 and they took their daughters for wives for themselves, and their own daughters they gave to their sons, and they served their gods. | 6 and they took their daughters for wives for themselves, and their own daughters they gave to their sons, and they served their gods. |
7 And the sons of Israēl did evil in the sight of Yahweh, and forgot Yahweh their God, and served Baals and the good luck pillars.
7 And the sons of Israēl did what was evil before the Lord, and they forgot the Lord, their God, and served the female Baals and the groves. | 7 And the sons of Israēl did what was evil before the Lord, and they forgot the Lord, their God, and served the Baals and the groves. |
8 Therefore the anger of Yahweh was hot against Israēl, and he sold them into the hand of Chushan-Rishathaim king of Mesopotamia; and the sons of Israēl served Chushan-Rishathaim eight years.

8 And with wrath the Lord was angry against Israēl, and he gave them up into the hands of King Chousarsathōm of Syria of rivers, and they served him eight years. | 8 And with wrath the Lord was angry against Israēl, and he gave them up in the hand of King Chousarsathaim of Syria of rivers, and the sons of Israēl served Chousarsathaim eight years. |
9 And when the sons of Israēl cried to Yahweh, Yahweh raised up a deliverer to the sons of Israēl, who delivered them, even Othniel the son of Kenaz, Caleb’s younger brother.
9 And the sons of Israēl cried out to the Lord, and the Lord raised up a deliverer for Israēl, and he delivered them, Gothoniēl son of Kenez, Chaleb’s younger brother, and he obeyed him. | 9 And the sons of Israēl cried out to the Lord, and the Lord raised up a deliverer for Israēl, and he delivered them, Gothoniēl son of Kenez, Chaleb’s brother, who was younger above him. |
10 And the Spirit of Yahweh came on him, and he judged Israēl, and went out to war; and Yahweh delivered Chushan-Rishathaim king of Mesopotamia into his hand; and his hand prevailed against Chushan-Rishathaim.
10 And a spirit of the Lord came on him, and he judged Israēl, and he went out to war, and the Lord gave over King Chousarsathōm of Syria in his hand, and his hand prevailed over Chousarsathōm. | 10 And a spirit of the Lord came on him, and he judged Israēl, and he went out to war against Chousarsathaim, and the Lord gave King Chousarsathaim of Syria of rivers in his hand, and his hand prevailed over Chousarsathaim. |
11 And the land had rest 40 years. And Othniel the son of Kenaz died.
11 And the land had rest 50 years. And Gothoniēl son of Kenez died. | 11 And the land had rest 40 years. And Gothoniēl son of Kenez died. |
12 And the sons of Israēl did evil again in the sight of Yahweh; and Yahweh strengthened Eglon the king of Moab against Israēl, because they had done evil in the sight of Yahweh.
12
Καὶ
οἱ
τὸ
12 And the sons of Israēl persisted to do what was evil before the Lord, and the Lord strengthened King Eglōm of Mōab against Israēl, because they had done what was evil before the Lord. | 12 And the sons of Israēl added to do what was evil before the Lord, and the Lord strengthened King Eglōm of Mōab against Israēl, because they had done what was evil before the Lord. |
13 And he gathered to him the sons of Ammon and Amalēk, and went and smote Israēl, and possessed the city of palm trees.
13 And he brought to him all the sons of Ammōn and Amalēk, and he went and struck Israēl, and he inherited the City of Palms. | 13 And he gathered to himself all the sons of Ammōn and Amalēk, and he went and struck Israēl, and he inherited the City of Palms. |
14 So the sons of Israēl served Eglon the king of Moab 18 years.
14 And the sons of Israēl served King Eglōm of Mōab 18 years. | 14 And the sons of Israēl served King Eglōm of Mōab 18 years. |
15 But when the sons of Israēl cried to Yahweh, Yahweh raised them up a deliverer, Ehud the son of Gera, a Benjamite, lefthanded man; and by him the sons of Israēl sent a present to Eglon the king of Moab.

15 And the sons of Israēl cried out to the Lord, and the Lord raised up for them a deliverer, Aōd son of Gēra son of Jemeni, an ambidextrous man. And the sons of Israēl sent bribes to King Eglōm of Mōab by his hand. | 15 And the sons of Israēl cried out to the Lord, and he raised up for them a deliverer, Aōd son of Gēra son of Jemeni, an ambidextrous man. And the sons of Israēl sent out bribes to King Eglōm of Mōab by his hand. |
16 But Ehud made himself a double-edged dagger a cubit long; and he attached it under his clothing on his right thigh.
16 And Aōd made for himself a double-bladed dagger, a span in length, and he fastened it on his right thigh under his cloak. | 16 And Aōd made for himself a doublebladed dagger; it was a span in length, and he fastened it on his right thigh under his cloak. |
17 And he brought the present to Eglon king of Moab. Now Eglon was a very fat man.
17 And he presented the bribes to King Eglōm of Mōab. And Eglōm was a very handsome man. | 17 And he presented the bribes to King Eglōm of Mōab. Now Eglōm was a very handsome man. |
18 And when he had made an end to offer the present, he sent away the people that carrued the present.
18 And it came to be, when Aōd had finished presenting the bribes, that he sent away those who carried the bribes. | 18 And it came to be, when Aōd had finished presenting the bribes, that he sent away those who carried the bribes. |
19 But he himself turned again from the idol carvings that were at Gilgal, and said, “I have a secret errand for you, Oh king.” He replied, “Keep silence!” And all who stood by him went out from him.

19 And Eglōm turned back from the carvings with Galgal. And Aōd said, “I have a secret word for you, O king.” And Eglōm said to everyone, “Out of here!” and all his attendants went out from him. | 19 And he himself turned back from the carvings that were with Galgal. And Aōd said, “I have a secret word for you, O king.” And Eglōm said to him, “Silence!” and he sent out from him all those who waited on him. |
20 And Ehud came to him where he was sitting alone in his cool private chamber. And Ehud said, “I have a message from God for you.” And he arose out of his seat.

20 And Aōd entered to him, and he was sitting in his summer upper room alone. And Aōd said, “A word of my God to you, O king.” And Eglōm rose from his throne, near him. | 20 And Aōd entered to him, and he was sitting in the summer upper room by himself alone. And Aōd said, “A word of my God to you, O king.” And Eglōm rose from his throne, near him. |
21 And Ehud put forth his left hand, and took the dagger from his right thigh, and thrust it into his belly.
21 And it came to be, just as he rose up that Aōd stretched out his left hand and took the dagger from his right thigh and thrust it into the belly of Eglōm, | 21 And it came to be, just as he rose up that Aōd reached with his left hand and took the dagger that was above his right thigh and thrust it into his belly, |
22 And the handle also went in after the blade; and the fat closed over the blade, so that he couldn’t pull the dagger out of his belly; and the guts came out.

22 and indeed he even drove the handle in after the blade, and the fat closed over the blade, because he didn’t pull out the dagger out of his belly. | 22 and indeed he even drove the handle in after the blade, and the fat closed over the blade, because he didn’t pull out the dagger out of his belly. And Aōd went out by the vestibule. |
23 Then Ehud went out through the porch, and shut the doors of the parlour on him, and locked them.
23 And Aōd went out into the vestibule, and he closed the doors of the upper room on him and wedged closed. | 23 And he went out past those who had been appointed, and he closed the doors of the upper room on him and wedged closed. |
24 When he had gone out, his servants came; and when they saw that, surprise, the doors of the parlour were locked, they said, “Surely he is covering his feet in his summer chamber.”
24
καὶ
24 And he went out, and his servants entered. And they looked, and see! the doors of the upper room were locked. And they said, “Perhaps he is sitting on the toilet seat in the retreat of his bedroom.” | 24 And he went out, and his servants entered. And they looked, and see! the doors of the upper room were barred. And they said, “Perhaps he is evacuating his bottom in the summer chamber.” |
25 And they waited until they were embarrassed; and, behold, he didn’t open the doors of the parlour. Therefore they took a key and opened them. And look, their lord had fallen down dead on the ground.
25 And they waited, embarrassed. And look! There was no one to open the doors of the upper room, and they took the key and opened, and look! Their lord had fallen on the ground dead. | 25 And they were patient until they were ashamed. And look! There was no one to open the doors of the upper room, and they took the key and opened, and look! Their lord had fallen on the ground dead. |
26 And Ehud escaped while they waited, and passed beyond the idol carvings, and escaped to Seirath.
26 And Aōd escaped while they were confused (and there was no one who noticed him) and he passed by the carvings and escaped into Seirōtha. | 26 And Aōd escaped while they were confused (and there was no one who noticed him) and he passed by the carvings and escaped into Seirōtha. |
27 And it happened, when he came, that he blew a trumpet in the mountain of Ephraim, and the sons of Israēl went down with him from the mount, and he before them.
27 And it came to be, when he arrived that he sounded with a horn on the mountain of Ephraim; and the sons of Israēl went down with him, and he was in front of them. | 27 And it haappened when Aōd entered the Israēl’s land that he sounded with a horn on the mountain of Ephraim; and the sons of Israēl went down with him from the mountain, and he was in front of them. |
28 And he said to them, “Follow after me; for Yahweh has delivered your enemies the Moabites into your hand.” And they went down after him, and took the fords of Jordan toward Moab, and didn’t allow anyone to pass over.
