Balaam’s Prophecy from Peor
1 And when Balaam saw that it pleased Yahweh to bless Israēl, he didn’t go, as at other times, to seek for enchantments, but he set his face toward the wilderness.
1 And when Balaam saw that it was good before the Lord to bless Israēl, he didn’t go according to his custom, to meet the omens and turned away his face toward the wilderness. | 1 And when Balaam saw that it was good before the Lord to bless Israēl, he didn’t go according to his custom, to meet the omens and turned away his face toward the wilderness. |
2 And Balaam lifted up his eyes, and he saw Israēl abiding in his tents according to their tribes; and the spirit of God came on him.

3 And he took up his parable, and said, “Balaam the son of Beōr has said, and the man whose eyes are open has said.

5 How good are your tents, Oh Jacōb, and your tents, Oh Israēl!
5 How good are your homes, Jacōb, and your tents, Israēl! | 5 How good are your homes, Jacōb, and your tents, Israēl! |
6 As the valleys are they spread forth, as gardens by the river’s side, as the trees of like aloes which Yahweh has planted, and as cedar trees beside the waters.
6 Like wooded valleys giving shade and like gardens by a river, and like tents which the Lord set up, and like cedars by the waters. | 6 Like wooded valleys giving shade and like gardens by a river, and like tents which the Lord set up, and like cedars by the waters. |
7 He shall pour the water out of his buckets, and his seed shall be in many waters, and his king shall be higher than Agag, and his kingdom shall be exalted.
7 A man will come forth out of his seed and he shall rule over many nations; and his kingdom will be exalted more than Gōg, and his kingdom shall be increased. | 7 A man will come forth out of his seed and he shall rule over many nations; and his kingdom will be exalted more than Gōg, and his kingdom shall be increased. |
8 El brought him forth out of Egypt; he has as it were the strength of a rhinoceros; he shall eat up the nations his enemies, and shall break their bones, and pierce them through with his arrows.
8 God led him out of Aigypt; like the glory of a rhinoceros for him; he shall consume the nations of his enemies, and he shall suck out the marrow of their thickness; and he shall shoot down an enemy with his missiles. | 8 God led him out of Aigypt; like the glory of a rhinoceros for him; he shall consume the nations of his enemies, and he shall suck out the marrow of their thickness; and he shall shoot down an enemy with his missiles. |
9 He couched, he lay down as a lion, and as a great lion; who shall stir him up? Blessed is he who blesses you, and cursed is he who curses you.”

9 He lay down, he rested like a lion, and like a lion’s cub. Who shall raise him up? They who bless you are blessed, and they who curse you are cursed.” | 9 He lay down, he rested like a lion, and like a lion’s cub. Who shall raise him up? 10 And Balak’s anger was kindled against Balaam, and he smote his hands together; and Balak said to Balaam, “I called you to curse my enemies, and, behold, you have altogether blessed them these three times.
10 And Balak was angry with Balaam, and clapped his hands together; and Balak said to Balaam, “I summoned you to curse my enemy, and look, in blessing you have blessed him this third time. | 10 And Balak was angry with Balaam, and clapped his hands together; and Balak said to Balaam, “I summoned you to curse my enemy, and look, in blessing you have blessed him this third time. |
11 Therefore now flee to your place; I thought to promote you to great honour; but, look, Yahweh has kept you back from honour.”
11 Now therefore flee to your place. I said, ‛ I will honour you, ’ but now the Lord has deprived you of glory.” | 11 Now therefore flee to your place. I said, ‛ I will honour you, ’ but now the Lord has deprived you of glory.” |
12 And Balaam said to Balak, “Didn’t I speak also to your messengers whom you sent to me, saying,

13 ‘If Balak would give me his house full of silver and gold, I cannot go beyond the command of Yahweh, to do either good or bad of my own mind; but what Yahweh says, that will I speak’?

14 And now, behold, I go to my people; come therefore, and I will advise you what this people shall do to your people in the latter days.”

17 I will point to him, but not now; I consider him happy, but he doesn’t approach; a star shall rise out of Jacōb, and a man shall spring out of Israēl; and shall crush the leaders of Mōab, and shall plunder all the sons of Sēth. | 17 I will point to him, but not now; I consider him happy, but he doesn’t approach; a star shall rise out of Jacōb, and a man shall spring out of Israēl; and shall crush the leaders of Mōab, and shall plunder all the sons of Sēth. |
18 And Edom shall be a possession, Seir also shall be a possession for his enemies; and Israēl shall do valiantly.

20 And when he looked on Amalek, he took up his parable, and said, “Amalek was the first of the nations; but his latter end shall be that he perish for ever.”

22 and though Beōr should have a clever nest, the Assyrians shall carry you away captive.” | 22 and though Beōr should have a clever nest, the Assyrians shall carry you away captive.” |
23 And he took up his parable, and said, “Alas, who shall live when God does this!
