Preaching of Jōhn the Baptist
(Mark 1:1-8; Luke 3:1-9; Jōhn 1:19-28)

3:2 [καὶ] λέγων, Μετανοεῖτε· ἤγγικεν γὰρ βασιλεία τῶν οὐρανῶν. 2 καὶ λέγων, Μετανοεῖτε· ἤγγικε γὰρ βασιλεία τῶν οὐρανῶν.
and saying, “Repent, for the kingdom of the heavens has come near.” And saying, “Repent, for the kingdom of the heavens has come near.”
3:3 οὗτος γάρ ἐστιν ῥηθεὶς διὰ Ἠσαΐου τοῦ προφήτου λέγοντος, Φωνὴ βοῶντος ἐν τῇ ἐρήμῳ· Ἑτοιμάσατε τὴν ὁδὸν κυρίου, εὐθείας ποιεῖτε τὰς τρίβους αὐτοῦ. 3 οὗτος γάρ ἐστιν ῥηθεὶς ὑπὸ Ἠσαΐου τοῦ προφήτου, λέγοντος, Φωνὴ βοῶντος ἐν τῇ ἐρήμῳ, Ἑτοιμάσατε τὴν ὁδὸν κυρίου· εὐθείας ποιεῖτε τὰς τρίβους αὐτοῦ.
For this is what was spoken by Isaiah the prophet saying, “A voice of shouting in the wilderness: ‘Prepare the way of the Lord. 3:5 τότε ἐξεπορεύετο πρὸς αὐτὸν Ἱεροσόλυμα καὶ πᾶσα Ἰουδαία καὶ πᾶσα περίχωρος τοῦ Ἰορδάνου, 5 τότε ἐξεπορεύετο πρὸς αὐτὸν Ἱεροσόλυμα καὶ πᾶσα Ἰουδαία καὶ πᾶσα περίχωρος τοῦ Ἰορδάνου·

λέγω γὰρ ὑμῖν ὅτι δύναται θεὸς ἐκ τῶν λίθων τούτων ἐγεῖραι τέκνα τῷ Ἀβραάμ.
9 καὶ μὴ δόξητε λέγειν ἐν ἑαυτοῖς, Πατέρα ἔχομεν τὸν Ἀβραάμ· λέγω γὰρ ὑμῖν, ὅτι δύναται θεὸς ἐκ τῶν λίθων τούτων ἐγεῖραι τέκνα τῷ Ἀβραάμ.

3:10 ἤδη δὲ ἀξίνη πρὸς τὴν ῥίζαν τῶν δένδρων κεῖται· πᾶν οὖν δένδρον μὴ ποιοῦν καρπὸν καλὸν ἐκκόπτεται καὶ εἰς πῦρ βάλλεται. 10 ἤδη δὲ καὶ ἀξίνη πρὸς τὴν ῥίζαν τῶν δένδρων κεῖται· πᾶν οὖν δένδρον μὴ ποιοῦν καρπὸν καλὸν ἐκκόπτεται καὶ εἰς πῦρ βάλλεται.

3:11 ἐγὼ μὲν ὑμᾶς βαπτίζω ἐν ὕδατι εἰς μετάνοιαν, δὲ ὀπίσω μου ἐρχόμενος ἰσχυρότερός μού ἐστιν, οὗ οὐκ εἰμὶ ἱκανὸς τὰ ὑποδήματα βαστάσαι· αὐτὸς ὑμᾶς βαπτίσει ἐν πνεύματι ἁγίῳ καὶ πυρί· 11 ἐγὼ μὲν βαπτίζω ὑμᾶς ἐν ὕδατι εἰς μετάνοιαν· δὲ ὀπίσω μου ἐρχόμενος ἰσχυρότερός μου ἐστίν, οὗ οὐκ εἰμὶ ἱκανὸς τὰ ὑποδήματα βαστάσαι· αὐτὸς ὑμᾶς βαπτίσει ἐν πνεύματι ἁγίῳ καὶ πυρί.
On the one hand, I baptize you in water for repentance; but on the other hand, he who is coming after me is mightier than I. I am not worthy to carry his sandals. 3:12 οὗ τὸ πτύον ἐν τῇ χειρὶ αὐτοῦ καὶ διακαθαριεῖ τὴν ἅλωνα αὐτοῦ καὶ συνάξει τὸν σῖτον αὐτοῦ εἰς τὴν ἀποθήκην, τὸ δὲ ἄχυρον κατακαύσει πυρὶ ἀσβέστῳ. 12 οὗ τὸ πτύον ἐν τῇ χειρὶ αὐτοῦ, καὶ διακαθαριεῖ τὴν ἅλωνα αὐτοῦ, καὶ συνάξει τὸν σῖτον αὐτοῦ εἰς τὴν ἀποθήκην, τὸ δὲ ἄχυρον κατακαύσει πυρὶ ἀσβέστῳ.

Baptism of Jesus
(Mark 1:9-11; Luke 3:21-22)

3:14  δὲ Ἰωάννης διεκώλυεν αὐτὸν λέγων, Ἐγὼ χρείαν ἔχω ὑπὸ σοῦ βαπτισθῆναι, καὶ σὺ ἔρχῃ πρός με; 14  δὲ Ἰωάννης διεκώλυεν αὐτόν, λέγων, Ἐγὼ χρείαν ἔχω ὑπὸ σοῦ βαπτισθῆναι, καὶ σὺ ἔρχῃ πρός με;
But Jōhn kept preventing him, saying, “I have need to be baptized by you, and you come to me?” But Jōhn kept preventing him, saying, “I have need to be baptized by you, and you come to me?”
3:15 ἀποκριθεὶς δὲ Ἰησοῦς εἶπεν πρὸς αὐτόν, Ἄφες ἄρτι, οὕτως γὰρ πρέπον ἐστὶν ἡμῖν πληρῶσαι πᾶσαν δικαιοσύνην.
τότε ἀφίησιν αὐτόν.
15 ἀποκριθεὶς δὲ Ἰησοῦς εἶπε πρὸς αὐτόν, Ἄφες ἄρτι· οὕτω γὰρ πρέπον ἐστὶν ἡμῖν πληρῶσαι πᾶσαν δικαιοσύνην.
τότε ἀφίησιν αὐτόν.

3:16 βαπτισθεὶς δὲ Ἰησοῦς εὐθὺς ἀνέβη ἀπὸ τοῦ ὕδατος· καὶ ἰδοὺ ἠνεῴχθησαν [αὐτῷ] οἱ οὐρανοί, καὶ εἶδεν [τὸ] πνεῦμα [τοῦ] θεοῦ καταβαῖνον ὡσεὶ περιστερὰν [καὶ] ἐρχόμενον ἐπ᾿ αὐτόν· 16 καὶ βαπτισθεὶς Ἰησοῦς ἀνέβη εὐθὺς ἀπὸ τοῦ ὕδατος· καὶ ἰδού, ἀνεῴχθησαν αὐτῷ οἱ οὐρανοί, καὶ εἶδε τὸ πνεῦμα τοῦ θεοῦ καταβαῖνον ὡσεὶ περιστεράν, καὶ ἐρχόμενον ἐπ᾿ αὐτόν.

3:17 καὶ ἰδοὺ φωνὴ ἐκ τῶν οὐρανῶν λέγουσα, Οὗτός ἐστιν υἱός μου ἀγαπητός, ἐν εὐδόκησα. 17 καὶ ἰδού, φωνὴ ἐκ τῶν οὐρανῶν λέγουσα, Οὗτός ἐστιν υἱός μου ἀγαπητός, ἐν εὐδόκησα.
and suddenly a voice out of the skies said, “This is my beloved Son, in whom I am well-pleased.” and suddenly! a voice out of the skies said, “This is my beloved Son, in whom I am well-pleased.”
