The Greatness of God
1
Comfort, comfort my people, says your God.
1 Encourage, Oh encourage my people, says God. | 1 Oh encourage my people, says God. |
2 Speak comfortably to Jerusalem, and cry to her, that her warfare is accomplished, that her iniquity is pardoned; for she has received of Yahweh’s hand double for all her sins.
2 O priests, speak to the heart of Jerousalēm; encourage her, because her humiliation has been fulfilled, her sin has been abolished, because she has received from the Lord’s hand double that of her sins. | 2 O priests, speak to the heart of Jerousalēm; encourage her, because her humiliation has been fulfilled, her sin has been abolished, because she has received from the Lord’s hand double that of her sins. |

The voice of him who cries in the wilderness, Prepare you the way of Yahweh, make straight in the desert a highway for our God.

3 A voice of one crying out in the wilderness. “Prepare the way of the Lord; make straight the paths of our God. | 3 A voice of one crying out in the wilderness. “Prepare the way of the Lord; make straight the paths of our God. |
4 Every valley shall be exalted, and every mountain and hill shall be made low; and the crooked shall be made straight, and the rough places plain.
4 Every valley shall be filled up, and every mountain and hill be made low, and all the crooked ways shall become straight, and the rough place shall become plains. | 4 Every valley shall be filled up, and every mountain and hill be made low, and all the crooked ways shall become straight, and the rough place shall become plains. |
5 And the glory of Yahweh shall be revealed, and all flesh shall see it together; for the mouth of Yahweh has spoken it.
5 And the glory of the Lord shall appear, and all flesh shall see the salvation of God, because the Lord has spoken.” | 5 And the glory of the Lord shall appear, and all flesh shall see the salvation of God, because the Lord has spoken.” |
6 The voice said, Cry. And he said, What shall I cry? All flesh is grass, and all the goodliness of it is as the flower of the field.

6 A voice of one saying, “Cry out!” And I said, “What shall I cry?” All flesh is grass; all the glory of man is like the flower of grass. | 6 A voice of one saying, “Cry out!” And I said, “What shall I cry?” All flesh is grass; all the glory of man is like the flower of grass. |
7 The grass withers, the flower feeds: because the spirit of Yahweh blows on it: surely the people is grass.
7 The grass withered, and the flower fell off, | 7 The grass withered, and the flower fell off, |
8 The grass withers, the flower feeds; but the word of our God shall stand forever.
8 but the word of our God remains forever. | 8 but the word of our God remains forever. |
9 Oh Zion, that bring good tidings, get you up into the high mountain; Oh Jerusalem, that bring good tidings, lift up your voice with strength; lift it up, don’t be afraid; say to the cities of Judah, Behold your God!
9 Go up on a high mountain, you who bring good news to Siōn; lift up your voice with strength, you who bring good news to Jerousalēm; lift it up; don’t be afraid; say to the cities of Jouda, “Look! Your God!” | 9 Go up on a high mountain, you who bring good news to Siōn; lift up your voice with strength, you who bring good news to Jerousalēm; lift it up; don’t be afraid; say to the cities of Jouda, “Look! Your God!” |
10 Behold, Adonai Yahweh will come with strong hand, and his arm shall rule for him: behold, his reward is with him, and his work before him.
10 Look! The Lord comes with strength, and his arm with authority. Look! his reward is with him, and his work before him. | 10 Look! The Lord comes with strength, and his arm with authority. Look! his reward is with him, and his work before him. |
11 He shall feed his flock like a shepherd: he shall gather the lambs with his arm, and carry them in his bosom, and shall gently lead those who are with young.
11 He will tend his flock like a shepherd and gather lambs in his arm and comfort those that are pregnant. | 11 He will tend his flock like a shepherd and gather lambs in his arm and comfort those that are pregnant. |
12 Who has measured the waters in the hollow of his hand, and meted out heaven with the span, and comprehended the dust of the earth in a measure, and weighed the mountains in scales, and the hills in a balance?

12
Who has measured the water with his hand and the sky with a span
and all the land by a handful? Who has weighed the mountains with a scale and the forests with a balance? |
12
Who has measured the water with his hand and the sky with a span
and all the land by a handful? Who has weighed the mountains with a scale and the forests with a balance? |
13 Who has directed the Spirit of Yahweh, or being his counseller has taught him?
13 Who has known the mind of the Lord, and who has been his counsellor to instruct him? | 13 Who has known the mind of the Lord, and who has been his counsellor to instruct him? |
14 With whom took he counsel, and who instructed him, and taught him in the path of judgment, and taught him knowledge, and showed to him the way of understanding?
14

14
Or to whom did he get advice, and he instructed him? Or who showed him judgment? Or who showed him the way of understanding? |
14
Or to whom did he get advice, and he instructed him? Or who showed him judgment? Or who showed him the way of understanding? |
15 Behold, the nations are as a drop of a bucket, and are counted as the small dust of the balance: behold, he takes up the isles as a very little thing.
15 If all the nations have been considered as a drop from a jar and as the sinking of a balance, they will also be considered as spittle. | 15 If all the nations have been considered as a drop from a jar and as the sinking of a balance, they will also be considered as spittle. |
16 And Lebanon is not sufficient to burn, nor the beasts of it sufficient for a burnt offering.
16 Libanon is not enough for burning, and all the quadrupeds are not enough for a whole burnt offering. | 16 Libanon is not enough for burning, and all the quadrupeds are not enough for a whole burnt offering. |
17 All nations before him are as nothing; and they are counted to him less than nothing, and vanity.
17 And all the nations are as nothing, and they have been considered as nothing. | 17 And all the nations are as nothing, and they have been considered as nothing. |
18 To whom then will you liken God? Or what likeness will you compare to him?
18 To whom did you compare the Lord, or with what comparison did you compare him? | 18 To whom did you compare the Lord, or with what comparison did you compare him? |
19 The workman melts a carved image, and the goldsmith spreads it over with gold, and casts silver chains.
19 Has a craftsman made an image, or after a goldsmith casts gold and gilds it, does he prepare its comparison? | 19 Has a craftsman made an image, or after a goldsmith casts gold and gilds it, does he prepare its comparison? |
20
He who is so impoverished that he has no oblation chooses a tree that won’t rot; he seeks to him a cunning workman to prepare a carved image, that shall not be moved.
20 For a craftsman chooses wood that won’t rot, then inquires wisely how he should stand up his image also in order that it won’t topple. | 20 For a craftsman chooses wood that won’t rot, then inquires wisely how he should stand up his image also in order that it won’t topple. |
21 Have you not known? You haven’t heard? Has it not been told you from the beginning? You haven’t understood from the foundations of the earth?
21
οὐ
21
Won’t you know? Won’t you hear? Hasn’t it been declared to you from the beginning? Haven’t you known the foundations of the land? |
21
Won’t you know? Won’t you hear? Hasn’t it been declared to you from the beginning? Haven’t you known the foundations of the land? |
22 It is he who sits on the circle of the earth, and the inhabitants of it are as grasshoppers; that stretches out the heavens as a curtain, and spreads them out as a tent to dwell in.
22 It is he who holds the circle of the land, and those who dwell in it are like grasshoppers, who has set up the sky like a vault and stretched it out like a tent to live in, | 22 It is he who holds the circle of the land, and those who dwell in it are like grasshoppers, who has set up the sky like a vault and stretched it out like a tent to live in, |
23 That brings the princes to nothing; he makes the judges of the earth as vanity.
23 who gives leaders to rule for nothing and has made the land as nothing. | 23 who gives leaders to rule for nothing and has made the land as nothing. |
24 Yes, they shall not be planted; yes, they shall not be sown: yes, their stock shall not take root in the earth; and he shall also blow on them, and they shall wither, and the whirlwind shall take them away as stubble.
24 For they won’t sow, nor will they plant, neither will their root take root in the ground; he blew on them, and they withered, and a storm will carry them off like brushwood. | 24 For they won’t sow, nor will they plant, neither will their root take root in the ground; he blew on them, and they withered, and a storm will carry them off like brushwood. |
25 To whom then will you liken me, or shall I be equal? Says the Holy One.
25

25 Now therefore to whom did you compare me and I will be exalted? said the Holy One. | 25 Now therefore to whom did you compare me and I will be exalted? said the Holy One. |
26 Lift up your eyes on high, and behold who has created these things, that brings out their army by number: he calls them all by names by the greatness of his might, for that he is strong in power; not one fails.

26
Look up on high with your eyes, and see.
Who has revealed all these things? He who brings out his ornaments by number, he will call them all by name; because of abundant glory and by might of strength, nothing has escaped you. |
26
Look up on high with your eyes, and see.
Who has revealed all these things? He who brings out his ornaments by number, he will call them all by name; because of abundant glory and by his might of strength, nothing has escaped you. |
27 Why say you, Oh Jacōb, and speak, Oh Israēl, My way is hid from Yahweh, and my judgment is passed over from my God?
27 For don’t say, Oh Jakōb, and why have you spoken, Oh Israēl, “My way was hidden from God, and my God has taken away my judgment and has withdrawn”? | 27 For don’t say, Oh Jakōb, and why have you spoken, Oh Israēl, “My way was hidden from God, and my God has taken away my judgment and has withdrawn”? |
28 Have you not known? You haven’t heard, that the everlasting God, Yahweh, the Creator of the ends of the earth, doesn’t faint, neither is weary? There is no searching of his understanding.
28
καὶ
νῦν
οὐκ
εἰ
μὴ

28
And now, haven’t you known? Haven’t you heard? God everlasting, God who prepared the ends of the land, won’t hunger or grow weary; nor is there searching of his understanding. |
28
And now, haven’t you known? Haven’t you heard? God everlasting, God who prepared the ends of the land, won’t hunger or grow weary; nor is there searching of his understanding. |
29 He gives power to the faint; and to those who have no might he increases strength.
29 giving strength to those who hunger and sorrow to those who are not grieving. | 29 giving strength to those who hunger and sorrow to those who are not grieving. |
30 Even the youths shall faint and be weary, and the young men shall utterly fall.
30 For youths will hunger, and the young will be weary, and the chosen will be powerless, | 30 For youths will hunger, and the young will be weary, and the chosen will be powerless, |
31 But they who wait on Yahweh shall renew their strength; they shall mount up with wings as eagles; they shall run, and not be weary; and they shall walk, and not faint.
31 but those who wait for God shall change their strength; they shall put forth wings like eagles; they shall run and not be weary; they shall walk and not hunger. | 31 but those who wait for God shall change their strength; they shall put forth wings like eagles; they shall run and not be weary; they shall walk and not hunger. |
