Jeroboam Warned, Stricken

1 And, behold, there came a man of God out of Judah by the word of Yahweh to Bethel; and Jeroboam stood by the altar to burn incense.

1 And behold, there came a man of God out of Jouda by the word of the Lord to Baethēl, and Jeroboam stood at the altar to sacrifice. 1 And behold, there came a man of God out of Jouda by the word of the Lord to Baethēl, and Jeroboam stood at the altar to sacrifice.

2 And he cried against the altar in the word of Yahweh, and said, Oh altar, altar, thus says Yahweh; Behold, a child shall be born to the house of David, Josiah by name; and on you he shall offer the priests of the high places that burn incense on you, and men’s bones shall be burned on you.

2 And he cried against the altar by the word of the Lord, and said, “Oh altar, altar, thus says the Lord, Behold, a son is to be born to the house of David, Jōsias by name; and he shall offer on you the priests of the high places, even of those who sacrifice on you, and he shall burn men’s bones on you.” 2 And he cried against the altar by the word of the Lord, and said, “Oh altar, altar, thus says the Lord, Behold, a son is to be born to the house of David, Jōsias by name; and he shall offer on you the priests of the high places, even of those who sacrifice on you, and he shall burn men’s bones on you.”

3 And he gave a sign the same day, saying, This is the sign which Yahweh has spoken; Behold, the altar shall be rent, and the ashes that are on it shall be poured out.

3 And in that day one shall give a sign, saying, “This is the word which the Lord has spoken, saying, Behold, the altar is rent, and the fatness on it shall be poured out.” 3 And in that day one shall give a sign, saying, “This is the word which the Lord has spoken, saying, Behold, the altar is rent, and the fatness on it shall be poured out.”

4 And it happened, when king Jeroboam heard the saying of the man of God, which had cried against the altar in Bethel, that he put forth his hand from the altar, saying, Lay hold on him. And his hand, which he put forth against him, dried up, so that he couldn’t pull it in again to him.

4 And it happened when king Jeroboam heard the words of the man of God who called on the altar that was in Baethēl, that the king stretched forth his hand from the altar, saying, “Take hold of him.” And, behold, his hand, which he stretched forth against him, withered, and he couldn’t draw it back to himself. 4 And it happened when king Jeroboam heard the words of the man of God who called on the altar that was in Baethēl, that the king stretched forth his hand from the altar, saying, “Take hold of him.” And, behold, his hand, which he stretched forth against him, withered, and he couldn’t draw it back to him.

5 The altar also was rent, and the ashes poured out from the altar, according to the sign which the man of God had given by the word of Yahweh.

5 And the altar was rent, and the fatness was poured out from the altar, according to the sign which the man of God gave by the word of the Lord. 5 And the altar was rent, and the fatness was poured out from the altar, according to the sign which the man of God gave by the word of the Lord.

6 And the king answered and said to the man of God, Entreat now the face of Yahweh your Elohim, and pray for me, that my hand may be restored me again. And the man of God besought Yahweh, and the king’s hand was restored him again, and became as it was before.

6 And king Jeroboam said to the man of God, “Entreat the Lord your God, and let my hand be restored to me.” And the man of God entreated the Lord, and he restored the king’s hand to him, and it became as before. 6 And king Jeroboam said to the man of God, “Entreat the Lord your God, and let my hand be restored to me.” And the man of God entreated the Lord, and he restored the king’s hand to him, and it became as before.

7 And the king said to the man of God, Come home with me, and refresh yourself, and I will give you a reward.

7 And the king said to the man of God, “Enter with me into the house, and dine, and I will give you a gift.” 7 And the king said to the man of God, “Enter with me into the house, and dine, and I will give you a gift.”

8 And the man of God said to the king, If you will give me half your house, I won’t go in with you, neither will I eat bread nor drink water in this place.

8 And the man of God said to the king, “If you should give me the half of your house, I would not go in with you, neither will I eat bread, neither will I drink water in this place; 8 And the man of God said to the king, “If you should give me the half of your house, I would not go in with you, neither will I eat bread, neither will I drink water in this place;

9 For so was it charged me by the word of Yahweh, saying, Eat no bread, nor drink water, nor turn again by the same way that you came.

9 for thus the Lord charged me by his word, saying, ‛Eat no bread, and drink no water, and return not by the way by which you came.’ ” 9 for thus the Lord charged me by his word, saying, ‛Eat no bread, and drink no water, and return not by the way by which you came.’ ”

10 So he went another way, and didn’t return by the way that he came to Bethel.

10 So he departed by another way, and didn’t return by the way by which he came to Baethēl. 10 So he departed by another way, and didn’t return by the way by which he came to Baethēl.

The Disobedient Prophet

11 Now there dwelt an old prophet in Bethel; and his sons came and told him all the works that the man of God had done that day in Bethel: the words which he had spoken to the king, them they told also to their father.

11 And there dwelt an old prophet in Baethēl; and his sons came and told him all the works that the man of God did on that day in Baethēl, and the words which he spoke to the king; and they turned the face of their father. 11 And there dwelt an old prophet in Baethēl; and his sons came and told him all the works that the man of God did on that day in Baethēl, and the words which he spoke to the king; and they turned the face of their father.

12 And their father said to them, What way went he? For his sons had seen what way the man of God went, which came from Judah.

12 καὶ ἐλάλησεν πρὸς αὐτοὺς πατὴρ αὐτῶν λέγων ποίᾳ ὁδῷ πεπόρευται;
12 καὶ ἐλάλησε πρὸς αὐτοὺς πατὴρ αὐτῶν λέγων· ποίᾳ ὁδῷ πεπόρευται;
12 And their father spoke to them, saying, “Which way did he go?” and his sons show him the way in which the man of God who came out of Jouda went. 12 And their father spoke to them, saying, “Which way did he go?” and his sons show him the way in which the man of God who came out of Jouda went.

13 And he said to his sons, Saddle the donkey for me. So they saddled the donkey for him; and he rode on it,

13 And he said to his sons, “Saddle the donkey for me.” and they saddled the donkey for him, and he mounted it, 13 And he said to his sons, “Saddle the donkey for me.” and they saddled the donkey for him, and he mounted it,

14 And went after the man of God, and found him sitting under an oak; and he said to him, Are you the man of God that came from Judah? And he said, I am.

14 καὶ ἐπορεύθη κατόπισθεν τοῦ ἀνθρώπου τοῦ θεοῦ καὶ εὗρεν αὐτὸν καθήμενον ὑπὸ δρῦν καὶ εἶπεν αὐτῷ εἰ σὺ εἶ ἄνθρωπος τοῦ θεοῦ ἐληλυθὼς ἐξ Ἰούδα;
14 καὶ ἐπορεύθης κατόπισθεν τοῦ ἀνθρώπου τοῦ Θεοῦ καὶ εὗρεν αὐτὸν καθήμενον ὑπὸ δρῦν καὶ εἶπε αὐτῷ· εἰ σὺ εἶ ἄνθρωπος τοῦ Θεοῦ ἐληλυθὼς ἐξ Ἰούδα;
14 and he went after the man of God, and found him sitting under an oak; and he said to him, “Are you the man of God that came out of Jouda?” And he said to him, “I am.” 14 and he went after the man of God, and found him sitting under an oak; and he said to him, “Are you the man of God that came out of Jouda?” And he said to him, “I am.”

15 Then he said to him, Come home with me, and eat bread.

15 And he said to him, “Come with me, and eat bread.” 15 And he said to him, “Come with me, and eat bread.”

16 And he said, I may not return with you, nor go in with you: neither will I eat bread nor drink water with you in this place.

16 And he said, “I shall not by any means be able to return with you, neither will I eat bread, neither will I drink water in this place. 16 And he said, “I shall not by any means be able to return with you, neither will I eat bread, neither will I drink water in this place.

17 For it was said to me by the word of Yahweh, You shall eat no bread nor drink water there, nor turn again to go by the way that you came.

17 For thus the Lord commanded me by word, saying, ‛Don’t eat bread there, nor drink water, and don’t return to that place by the way by which you came.’ ” 17 For thus the Lord commanded me by word, saying, ‛Don’t eat bread there, nor drink water, and don’t return to that place by the way by which you came.’ ”

18 He said to him, I am a prophet also as you are; and an angel spoke to me by the word of Yahweh, saying, Bring him back with you into your house, that he may eat bread and drink water. But he lied to him.

18 And he said to him, “ I also am a prophet as you are; and an angel spoke to me by the word of the Lord, saying, ‛Bring him back to you into your house, and let him eat bread and drink water.’ ” but he lied to him. 18 And he said to him, “ I also am a prophet as you are; and an angel spoke to me by the word of the Lord, saying, ‛Bring him back to you into your house, and let him eat bread and drink water.’ ” but he lied to him.

19 So he went back with him, and ate bread in his house, and drank water.

19 And he brought him back, and he ate bread and drank water in his house. 19 And he brought him back, and he ate bread and drank water in his house.

20 And it happened, as they sat at the table, that the word of Yahweh came to the prophet that brought him back.

20 And it happened while they were sitting at the table, that the word of the Lord came to the prophet that brought him back; 20 And it happened while they were sitting at the table, that the word of the Lord came to the prophet that brought him back;

21 And he cried to the man of God that came from Judah, saying, Thus says Yahweh, Forasmuch as you have disobeyed the mouth of Yahweh, and haven’t kept the commandment which Yahweh your Elohim commanded you,

21 and he spoke to the man of God that came out of Jouda, saying, “Thus says the Lord, Because you have resisted the word of the Lord, and haven’t kept the commandment which the Lord your God commanded you, 21 and he spoke to the man of God that came out of Jouda, saying, “Thus says the Lord, Because you have resisted the word of the Lord, and haven’t kept the commandment which the Lord your God commanded you,

22 But came back, and have eaten bread and drunk water in the place, of the which Yahweh did say to you, Eat no bread, and drink no water; your carcass shall not come to the sepulchre of your fathers.

22 but have returned, and eaten bread and drunk water in the place of which he spoke to you, saying, ‛You shall not eat bread, and shall not drink water’; therefore your body shall in no way enter into the sepulchre of your fathers.” 22 but have returned, and eaten bread and drunk water in the place of which he spoke to you, saying, ‛You shall not eat bread, and shall not drink water’; therefore your body shall in no way enter into the sepulchre of your fathers.”

23 And it happened, after he had eaten bread, and after he had drunk, that he saddled for him the donkey, namely, for the prophet whom he had brought back.

26 And when the prophet that brought him back from the way heard of it, he said, It is the man of God, who was disobedient to the word of Yahweh; therefore Yahweh has delivered him to the lion, which has torn him, and slain him, according to the word of Yahweh, which he spoke to him.

29 And the prophet took up the carcass of the man of God, and laid it on the donkey, and brought it back; and the old prophet came to the city, to mourn and to bury him.

30 And he laid his carcass in his own grave; and they mourned over him, saying, Alas, my brother!

30 in his own tomb, and they mourned for him, saying, “Alas, brother.” 30 in his own tomb, and they mourned for him, saying, “Alas, brother.”

31 And it happened, after he had buried him, that he spoke to his sons, saying, When I am dead, then bury me in the sepulchre in which the man of God was buried; lay my bones beside his bones.

32 For the saying which he cried by the word of Yahweh against the altar in Bethel, and against all the houses of the high places which are in the cities of Samaria, shall surely come to pass.

33 After this thing Jeroboam didn’t return from his evil way, but made again of the lowest of the people priests of the high places: whoever would, he consecrated him, and he became one of the priests of the high places.
