King Rehoboam Acts Foolishly

1 And Rehoboam went to Shechem; for all Israēl were come to Shechem to make him king.

1 And king Roboam goes to Sikima; for all Israēl were coming to Sikima to make him king. 1 And king Roboam goes to Sikima; for all Israēl were coming to Sikima to make him king.

2 And it happened, when Jeroboam the son of Nebat, who was yet in Egypt, heard of it, (for he was fled from the presence of king Solomon, and Jeroboam dwelt in Egypt;)

2 When Jeroboam son of Nebat heard and (he was still in Aigypt, when he had fled from the presence of King Salōmōn and had been dwelling in Aigypt), he went straight and went into his city into the land of Sarira that was in the mountain of Ephraim. And king Salōmōn rested with his fathers, 2 When Jeroboam son of Nebat heard and (he was still in Aigypt, when he had fled from the presence of King Salōmōn and had been dwelling in Aigypt),

3 That they sent and called him. And Jeroboam and all the congregation of Israēl came, and spoke to Rehoboam, saying,

3 And the people spoke to king Roboam, saying, 3 And they sent and called him and Jeroboam and all the congregation of Israēl came and the people spoke to king Roboam, saying,

4 Your father made our yoke grievous: now therefore make you the grievous service of your father, and his heavy yoke which he put on us, lighter, and we will serve you.

4 “Your father made our yoke heavy; but now lighten somewhat of the hard service of your father, and of his heavy yoke which he put on us, and we will serve you.” 4 “Your father made our yoke heavy; but now lighten somewhat of the hard service of your father, and of his heavy yoke which he put on us, and we will serve you.”

5 And he said to them, Depart yet for three days, then come again to me. And the people departed.

5 And he said to them, “Depart for three days, and return to me.” And they left. 5 And he said to them, “Depart for three days, and return to me.” And they left.

6 And king Rehoboam consulted with the old men, that stood before Solomon his father while he yet lived, and said, How do you advise that I may answer this people?

6 καὶ παρήγγειλεν βασιλεὺς τοῖς πρεσβυτέροις, οἳ ἦσαν παρεστῶτες ἐνώπιον Σαλωμὼν τοῦ πατρὸς αὐτοῦ ἔτι ζῶντος αὐτοῦ, λέγων πῶς ὑμεῖς βουλεύεσθε καὶ ἀποκριθῶ τῷ λαῷ τούτῳ λόγον; 6 καὶ ἀπήγγειλεν βασιλεὺς τοῖς πρεσβυτέροις, οἳ ἦσαν παρεστῶτες ἐνώπιον Σαλωμὼν τοῦ πατρὸς αὐτοῦ ἔτι ζῶντος αὐτοῦ λέγων· πῶς ὑμεῖς βουλεύεσθε καὶ ἀποκριθῶ τῷ λαῷ τούτῳ λόγον;
6 And the king referred the matter to the elders, who stood before Salōmōn his father while he was yet living, saying, “How do you advise that I should answer this people?” 6 And the king referred the matter to the elders, who stood before Salōmōn his father while he was yet living, saying, “How do you advise that I should answer this people?”

7 And they spoke to him, saying, If you will be a servant to this people this day, and will serve them, and answer them, and speak good words to them, then they will be your servants forever.

7 And they spoke to him, saying, “If you will this day be a servant to this people, and will serve them, and will speak to them good words, then will they be your servants continually.” 7 And they spoke to him, saying, “If you will this day be a servant to this people, and will serve them, and will speak to them good words, then will they be your servants continually.”

8 But he forsook the counsel of the old men, which they had given him, and consulted with the young men who were grown up with him, and which stood before him.

8 But he forsook the counsel of the old men who they gave him, and consulted with the young men who were brought up with him, who stood in his presence. 8 But he forsook the counsel of the old men who they gave him, and consulted with the young men who were brought up with him, who stood in his presence.

9 And he said to them, What counsel give you who we may answer this people, who have spoken to me, saying, Make the yoke which your father did put on us lighter?

9 καὶ εἶπεν αὐτοῖς τί ὑμεῖς συμβουλεύετε, καὶ τί ἀποκριθῶ τῷ λαῷ τούτῳ τοῖς λαλήσασιν πρός με λεγόντων κούφισον ἀπὸ τοῦ κλοιοῦ, οὗ ἔδωκεν πατήρ σου ἐφ’ ἡμᾶς; 9 καὶ εἶπε αὐτοῖς· τί ὑμεῖς συμβουλεύετε, καὶ τί ἀποκριθῶ τῷ λαῷ τούτῳ τοῖς λέγουσι πρός με λεγόντων· κούφισον ἀπὸ τοῦ κλοιοῦ, οὗ ἔδωκεν πατήρ σου ἐφ’ ἡμᾶς;
9 And he said to them, “What counsel do you give? And what shall I answer to this people who speak to me, saying, ‛Lighten somewhat of the yoke which your father has put on us’?” 9 And he said to them, “What counsel do you give? And what shall I answer to this people who speak to me, saying, ‛Lighten somewhat of the yoke which your father has put on us’?”

10 And the young men who were grown up with him spoke to him, saying, Thus you shall speak to this people who spoke to you, saying, Your father made our yoke heavy, but make it lighter to us; thus you shall say to them, My little finger shall be thicker than my father’s loins.

10 And the young men who had been brought up with him, who stood before his face, spoke to him, saying, “Thus you shall say to this people who have spoken to you, saying, ‛Your father made our yoke heavy, and do you now lighten it from off us’; thus shall say to them, ‛My little finger shall be thicker than my father’s loins.

11 And now whereas my father did load you with a heavy yoke, I will add to your yoke: my father has chastised you with whips, but I will chastise you with scorpions.

11 And whereas my father did load you with a heavy yoke, I also will add to your yoke: my father chastised you with whips, but I will chastise you with scorpions.’ ” 11 And whereas my father did load you with a heavy yoke, I also will add to your yoke: my father chastised you with whips, but I will chastise you with scorpions.’ ”

12 So Jeroboam and all the people came to Rehoboam the third day, as the king had appointed, saying, Come to me again the third day.

12 And all Israēl came to king Roboam on the third day, as the king spoke to them, saying, “ Return to me on the third day.” 12 And all Israēl came to king Roboam on the third day, as the king spoke to them, saying, “ Return to me on the third day.”

13 And the king answered the people roughly, and forsook the old men’s counsel that they gave him;

13 And the king answered the people harshly; and Roboam forsook the counsel of the old men who they counselled him. 13 And the king answered the people harshly; and Roboam forsook the counsel of the old men who they counselled him.

14 And spoke to them after the counsel of the young men, saying, My father made your yoke heavy, and I will add to your yoke: my father also chastised you with whips, but I will chastise you with scorpions.

14 And he spoke to them according to the counsel of the young men, saying, “My father made your yoke heavy, and I will add to your yoke: my father chastised you with whips, but I will chastise you with scorpions.” 14 And he spoke to them according to the counsel of the young men, saying, “My father made your yoke heavy, and I will add to your yoke: my father chastised you with whips, but I will chastise you with scorpions.”

15 Therefore the king didn’t listen to the people; for the cause was from Yahweh, that he might perform his saying, which Yahweh spoke by Ahijah the Shilonite to Jeroboam the son of Nebat.

15 And the king didn’t listen to the people, because the change was from the Lord, that he might establish his word which he spoke by Achia the Sēlonite concerning Jeroboam the son of Nabat. 15 And the king didn’t listen to the people, because the change was from the Lord, that he might establish his word which he spoke by Achia the Sēlonite concerning Jeroboam the son of Nabat.

The Kingdom Divided; Jeroboam Rules Israēl

16 So when all Israēl saw that the king didn’t listen to them, the people answered the king, saying, What portion have we in David? Neither have we inheritance in the son of Jesse: to your tents, Oh Israēl: now see to your own house, David. So Israēl departed to their tents.

16 καὶ εἶδον πᾶς Ἰσραὴλ ὅτι οὐκ ἤκουσεν βασιλεὺς αὐτῶν, καὶ ἀπεκρίθη λαὸς τῷ βασιλεῖ λέγων τίς ἡμῖν μερὶς ἐν Δαυίδ;
16 καὶ εἶδον πᾶς Ἰσραήλ, ὅτι οὐκ ἤκουσεν βασιλεὺς αὐτῶν, καὶ ἀπεκρίθη λαὸς τῷ βασιλεῖ λέγων· τίς ἡμῖν μερὶς ἐν Δαυίδ;
16 And all Israēl saw that the king didn’t listen to them; and the people answered the king, saying, “What portion have we in David? Neither have we any inheritance in the son of Jessae. Depart, Oh Israēl, to your tents: now feed your own house, David.” So Israēl departed to his tents. 16 And all Israēl saw that the king didn’t listen to them; and the people answered the king, saying, “What portion have we in David? Neither have we any inheritance in the son of Jessae. Depart, Oh Israēl, to your tents: now feed your own house, David. ” So Israēl departed to his tents.

17 But as for the sons of Israēl which dwelt in the cities of Judah, Rehoboam reigned over them.

18 Then king Rehoboam sent Adoram, who was over the tribute; and all Israēl stoned him with stones, that he died. Therefore king Rehoboam made speed to get him up to his chariot, to flee to Jerusalem.

18 And the king sent Adoniram who was over the taxation; and they stoned him with stones, and he died; and king Roboam made haste to rise to flee to Jerousalēm. 18 And the king sent Adoniram who was over the taxation; and they stoned him with stones, and he died; and king Roboam made haste to rise to flee to Jerousalēm.

19 So Israēl rebelled against the house of David to this day.

19 So Israēl rebelled against the house of David until this day. 19 So Israēl rebelled against the house of David until this day.

20 And it happened, when all Israēl heard that Jeroboam came again, that they sent and called him to the congregation, and made him king over all Israēl: there was none that followed the house of David, but the tribe of Judah only.
