Chapter 20

AlexandrinusVaticanus

Sheba’s Revolt

1And there happened to be there a man of Belial, whose name was Sheba, the son of Bichri, a Benjamite; and he blew a trumpet, and said, We have no part in David, neither have we inheritance in the son of Jesse: every man to his tents, Oh Israēl.

1And there was a transgressor so called there, and his name was Sabee, a Benjamite, the son of Bochori; and he blew the trumpet, and said, We have no portion in David, neither have we any inheritance in the son of Jessae: to your tents, Oh Israēl, everyone. 1And there was a transgressor so called there, and his name was Sabee, a Benjamite, the son of Bochori; and he blew the trumpet, and said, We have no portion in David, neither have we any inheritance in the son of Jessae: to your tents, Oh Israēl, everyone.

2So every man of Israēl went up from after David, and followed Sheba the son of Bichri; but the men of Judah split to their king, from Jordan even to Jerusalem.

2And all the men of Israēl went up from following David after Sabee the son of Bochori; but the men of Jouda adhered to their king, from Jordan even to Jerusalem. 2And all the men of Israēl went up from following David after Sabee the son of Bochori; but the men of Jouda adhered to their king, from Jordan even to Jerusalem.

3And David came to his house at Jerusalem; and the king took the ten women his concubines, whom he had left to keep the house, and put them in ward, and fed them, but didn’t go in to them. So they were shut up to the day of their death, living in widowhood.

3And David went into his house at Jerusalem; and the king took the ten women his concubines, whom he had left to keep the house, and he put them in a place of custody, and maintained them, and didn’t go in to them; and they were kept living as widows, till the day of their death. 3And David went into his house at Jerusalem; and the king took the ten women his concubines, whom he had left to keep the house, and he put them in a place of custody, and maintained them, and didn’t go in to them; and they were kept living as widows, till the day of their death.

4Then said the king to Amasa, Assemble me the men of Judah within three days, and be here present.

4And the king said to Amessai, Call to me the men of Jouda for three days, and do you be present here. 4And the king said to Amessai, Call to me the men of Jouda for three days, and do you be present here.

5So Amasa went to assemble the men of Judah; but he tarried longer than the set time which he had appointed him.

5And Amessai went to call Jouda, and delayed beyond the time which David appointed him. 5And Amessai went to call Jouda, and delayed beyond the time which David appointed him.

6And David said to Abishai, Now shall Sheba the son of Bichri do us more harm than did Absalom: take you your lord’s servants, and pursue after him, lest he get him fenced cities, and escape us.

6And David said to Amessai, Now shall Sabee the son of Bochori do us more harm than Abessalom: now then take you with you the servants of your lord, and follow after him, lest he find for himself strong cities, so will he blind our eyes. 6And David said to Amessai, Now shall Sabee the son of Bochori do us more harm than Abessalom: now then take you with you the servants of your lord, and follow after him, lest he find for himself strong cities, so will he blind our eyes.

7And there went out after him Jōab’s men, and the Cherethites, and the Pelethites, and all the mighty men; and they went out of Jerusalem, to pursue after Sheba the son of Bichri.

7And there went out after him Amessai and the men of Jōab, and the Cherethites, and the Phelethites, and all the mighty men; and they went out from Jerusalem to pursue after Sabee the son of Bochori. 7And there went out after him Amessai and the men of Jōab, and the Cherethites, and the Phelethites, and all the mighty men; and they went out from Jerusalem to pursue after Sabee the son of Bochori.

8When they were at the great stone which is in Gibeon, Amasa went before them. And Jōab’s garment that he had put on was girded to him, and on it a girdle with a sword fastened on his loins in the sheath of it; and as he went forth it fell out.

8And they were by the great stone that is in Gabaon; and Amessai went in before them; and Jōab had on him a military cloak over his apparel, and over it he was girded with a dagger fastened on his loins in its scabbard; and the dagger came out, it even came out and fell. 8And they were by the great stone that is in Gabaon; and Amessai went in before them; and Jōab had on him a military cloak over his apparel, and over it he was girded with a dagger fastened on his loins in its scabbard; and the dagger came out, it even came out and fell.

9And Jōab said to Amasa, Are you in health, my brother? And Jōab took Amasa by the beard with the right hand to kiss him.

9καὶ εἶπεν Ἰωὰβ τῷ Ἀμεσσαῒ Εἰ ὑγιαίνεις σύ, ἀδελφέ;
9καὶ εἶπε Ἰωὰβ τῷ Ἀμεσσαΐ· εἰ ὑγιαίνεις σὺ ἀδελφέ;
9And Jōab said to Amessai, Are you in health, my brother? And the right hand of Jōab took hold of the beard of Amessai to kiss him. 9And Jōab said to Amessai, Are you in health, my brother? And the right hand of Jōab took hold of the beard of Amessai to kiss him.

Amasa Murdered

10But Amasa took no heed to the sword that was in Jōab’s hand; so he smote him with it in the fifth rib, and shed out his bowels to the ground, and struck him not again; and he died. So Jōab and Abishai his brother pursued after Sheba the son of Bichri.

10And Amessai observed not the dagger that was in the hand of Jōab; and Jōab smote him with it on the loins, and his bowels were shed out on the ground, and he didn’t repeat the blow, and he died; and Jōab and Abessai his brother pursued after Sabee the son of Bochori.

11And one of Jōab’s men stood by him, and said, He who favours Jōab, and he who is for David, let him go after Jōab.

11καὶ ἀνὴρ ἔστη ἐπ’ αὐτὸν τῶν παιδαρίων Ἰωὰβ καὶ εἶπεν Τίς βουλόμενος Ἰωὰβ καὶ τίς τοῦ Δαυίδ, ὀπίσω Ἰωάβ· 11καὶ ἀνὴρ ἔστη ἐπ’ αὐτὸν τῶν παιδαρίων Ἰωὰβ καὶ εἶπε· τίς βουλόμενος Ἰωὰβ καὶ τίς τοῦ Δαυίδ, ὀπίσω Ἰωάβ;
11And there stood over him one of the servants of Jōab, and said, Who is he who is for Jōab, and who is on the side of David following Jōab? 11And there stood over him one of the servants of Jōab, and said, Who is he who is for Jōab, and who is on the side of David following Jōab?

12And Amasa wallowed in blood in the midst of the highway. And when the man saw that all the people stood still, he removed Amasa out of the highway into the field, and cast a cloth on him, when he saw that everyone who came by him stood still.

12And Amessai was weltering in blood in the midst of the way. And a man saw that all the people stood still; and he removed Amessai out of the path into a field, and he cast a garment on him, because he saw everyone who came to him standing still. 12And Amessai was weltering in blood in the midst of the way. And a man saw that all the people stood still; and he removed Amessai out of the path into a field, and he cast a garment on him, because he saw everyone who came to him standing still.

Revolt Put Down

13When he was removed out of the highway, all the people went on after Jōab, to pursue after Sheba the son of Bichri.

13And when he was quickly removed from the road, every man of Israēl passed after Jōab to pursue after Sabee the son of Bochori. 13And when he was quickly removed from the road, every man of Israēl passed after Jōab to pursue after Sabee the son of Bochori.

14And he went through all the tribes of Israēl to Abel, and to Beth-maachah, and all the Berites; and they were gathered together, and went also after him.

14And he went through all the tribes of Israēl to Abel, and to Bethmacha; and all in Charri too were assembled, and followed after him. 14And he went through all the tribes of Israēl to Abel, and to Bethmacha; and all in Charri too were assembled, and followed after him.

15And they came and besieged him in Abel of Beth-maachah, and they cast up a bank against the city, and it stood in the trench; and all the people who were with Jōab battered the wall, to throw it down.

15And they came and besieged him in Abel and Phermacha; and they raised a mound against the city and it stood close to the wall; and all the people with Jōab proposed to throw down the wall. 15And they came and besieged him in Abel and Phermacha; and they raised a mound against the city and it stood close to the wall; and all the people with Jōab proposed to throw down the wall.

16Then cried a wise woman out of the city, Hear, hear; say, please, to Jōab, Come near here, that I may speak with you.

16And a wise woman cried from the wall, and said, Hear, hear; say, please, to Jōab, Draw near here, and I will speak to him. 16And a wise woman cried from the wall, and said, Hear, hear; say, please, to Jōab, Draw near here, and I will speak to him.

17And when he came near to her, the woman said, Are you Jōab? And he answered, I am he. Then she said to him, Hear the words of your handmaid. And he answered, I do hear.

17καὶ προσήγγισεν πρὸς αὐτήν, καὶ εἶπεν γυνή Εἰ σὺ εἶ Ἰωάβ;
17καὶ προσήγγισε πρὸς αὐτήν, καὶ εἶπε γυνή· εἰ σὺ εἶ Ἰωάβ;
17And he drew near to her, and the woman said to him, Are you Jōab? And he said, I am. And she said to him, Hear the words of your handmaid; and Jōab said, I do hear. 17And he drew near to her, and the woman said to him, Are you Jōab? And he said, I am. And she said to him, Hear the words of your handmaid; and Jōab said, I do hear.

18Then she spoke, saying, They were wont to speak in old time, saying, They shall surely ask counsel at Abel; and so they ended the matter.

18And she spoke, saying, Of old time they said thus, Surely one was asked in Abel, and Dan, whether the faithful in Israēl failed in what they purposed; they will surely ask in Abel, even in like manner, whether they have failed. 18And she spoke, saying, Of old time they said thus, Surely one was asked in Abel, and Dan, whether the faithful in Israēl failed in what they purposed; they will surely ask in Abel, even in like manner, whether they have failed.

19I am one of those who are peaceable and faithful in Israēl: you seek to destroy a city and a mother in Israēl: why will you swallow up the inheritance of Yahweh?

19ἐγώ εἰμι εἰρηνικὰ τῶν στηριγμάτων Ἰσραήλ, σὺ δὲ ζητεῖς θανατῶσαι πόλιν καὶ μητρόπολιν ἐν Ἰσραήλ· ἵνα τί καταποντίζεις κληρονομίαν κυρίου; 19ἐγώ εἰμι εἰρηνικὰ τῶν στηριγμάτων Ἰσραήλ, σὺ δὲ ζητεῖς θανατῶσαι πόλιν καὶ μητρόπολιν ἐν Ἰσραήλ· ἱνατί καταποντίζεις κληρονομίαν Κυρίου;
19I am a peaceable one of the strong ones in Israēl; but you seek to destroy a city and a mother city in Israēl: why do you seek to ruin the inheritance of the Lord? 19I am a peaceable one of the strong ones in Israēl; but you seek to destroy a city and a mother city in Israēl: why do you seek to ruin the inheritance of the Lord?

20And Jōab answered and said, Far be it, far be it from me, that I should swallow up or destroy.

20And Jōab answered and said, Far be it, far be it from me, that I should ruin or destroy. 20And Jōab answered and said, Far be it, far be it from me, that I should ruin or destroy.

21The matter is not so; but a man of mount Ephraim, Sheba the son of Bichri by name, has lifted up his hand against the king, even against David: deliver him only, and I will depart from the city. And the woman said to Jōab, Behold, his head shall be thrown to you over the wall.

21Is not the case thus, that a man of mount Ephraim, Sabee, son of Bochori by name, has even lifted up his hand against king David? Give him only to me, and I will depart from the city. And the woman said to Jōab, Behold, his head shall be thrown to you over the wall. 21Is not the case thus, that a man of mount Ephraim, Sabee, son of Bochori by name, has even lifted up his hand against king David? Give him only to me, and I will depart from the city. And the woman said to Jōab, Behold, his head shall be thrown to you over the wall.

22Then the woman went to all the people in her wisdom. And they cut off the head of Sheba the son of Bichri, and cast it out to Jōab. And he blew a trumpet, and they retired from the city, every man to his tent. And Jōab returned to Jerusalem to the king.

22And the woman went in to all the people, and she spoke to all the city in her wisdom; and they took off the head of Sabee the son of Bochori; and took it away and threw it to Jōab; and he blew the trumpet, and the people separated from the city away from him, every man to his tent; and Jōab returned to Jerusalem to the king.

23Now Jōab was over all the army of Israēl; and Benaiah the son of Jehoiada was over the Cherethites and over the Pelethites.
