Jōab Reproves David’s Lament

1 [M 19:2]And it was told Jōab, Behold, the king weeps and mourns for Absalom.

1And they brought Jōab word, saying, Behold, the king weeps and mourns for Abessalom. 1And they brought Jōab word, saying, Behold, the king weeps and mourns for Abessalom.

2 [M 19:3]And the victory that day was turned into mourning to all the people; for the people heard say that day how the king was grieved for his son.

2And the victory was turned that day into mourning to all the people, for the people heard say that day, The king grieves after his son. 2And the victory was turned that day into mourning to all the people, for the people heard say that day, The king grieves after his son.

3 [M 19:4]And the people got them by stealth that day into the city, as people being ashamed steal away when they flee in battle.

3And the people stole away that day to go into the city, as people steal away when they are ashamed as they flee in the battle. 3And the people stole away that day to go into the city, as people steal away when they are ashamed as they flee in the battle.

4 [M 19:5]But the king covered his face, and the king cried with a loud voice, Oh my son Absalom, Oh Absalom, my son, my son!

4And the king hid his face; and the king cried with a loud voice, My son Abessalom! Abessalom my son! 4And the king hid his face; and the king cried with a loud voice, My son Abessalom! Abessalom my son!

5 [M 19:6]And Jōab came into the house to the king, and said, You have shamed this day the faces of all your servants, which this day have saved your life, and the lives of your sons and of your daughters, and the lives of your wives, and the lives of your concubines;

5And Jōab went in to the king, into the house, and said, You have this day shamed the faces of all your servants that have delivered you this day, and have saved the lives of your sons and of your daughters, and the lives of your wives, and of your concubines, 5And Jōab went in to the king, into the house, and said, You have this day shamed the faces of all your servants that have delivered you this day, and have saved the lives of your sons and of your daughters, and the lives of your wives, and of your concubines,

6 [M 19:7]In that you love your enemies, and hate your friends. For you have declared this day, that you regard neither princes nor servants; for this day I perceive, that if Absalom had lived, and all we had died this day, then it had pleased you well.

6since you love those who hate you, and hate those who love you; and you have this day declared, that your princes and your servants are nothing in your sight; for I know this day, that if Abessalom were alive, and all of us dead today, then it would have been right in your sight. 6since you love those who hate you, and hate those who love you; and you have this day declared, that your princes and your servants are nothing in your sight; for I know this day, that if Abessalom were alive, and all of us dead today, then it would have been right in your sight.

7 [M 19:8]Now therefore arise, go forth, and speak comfortably to your servants; for I swear by Yahweh, if you don’t go forth, there won’t stay one with you this night; and that will be worse to you than all the evil that befell you from your youth until now.

7And now arise, and go forth, and speak comfortably to your servants; for I have sworn by the Lord, that unless you will go forth today, there shall not a man remain with you this night; and know for yourself, this thing will indeed be evil to you beyond all the evil that has come on you from your youth until now. 7And now arise, and go forth, and speak comfortably to your servants; for I have sworn by the Lord, that unless you will go forth today, there shall not a man remain with you this night; and know for yourself, this thing will indeed be evil to you beyond all the evil that has come on you from your youth until now.

David Restored as King

8 [M 19:9]Then the king arose, and sat in the gate. And they told to all the people, saying, Behold, the king sits in the gate. And all the people came before the king; for Israēl had fled every man to his tent.

8Then the king arose, and sat in the gate; and all the people reported, saying, Behold, the king sits in the gate. And all the people went in before the king to the gate; for Israēl had fled every man to his tent. 8Then the king arose, and sat in the gate; and all the people reported, saying, Behold, the king sits in the gate. And all the people went in before the king to the gate; for Israēl had fled every man to his tent.

9 [M 19:10]And all the people were at strife throughout all the tribes of Israēl, saying, The king saved us out of the hand of our enemies, and he delivered us out of the hand of the Allophyles; and now he is fled out of the land for Absalom.

9And all the people disputed among all the tribes of Israēl, saying, King David delivered us from all our enemies, and he rescued us from the hand of the Allophyles; and now he has fled from the land, and from his kingdom, and from Abessalom. 9And all the people disputed among all the tribes of Israēl, saying, King David delivered us from all our enemies, and he rescued us from the hand of the Allophyles; and now he has fled from the land, and from his kingdom, and from Abessalom.

10 [M 19:11]And Absalom, whom we anointed over us, is dead in battle. Now therefore why speak you not a word of bringing the king back?

10καὶ Ἀβεσσαλώμ, ὃν ἐχρίσαμεν ἐφ’ ἡμῶν, ἀπέθανεν ἐν τῷ πολέμῳ, καὶ νῦν ἵνα τί ὑμεῖς κωφεύετε τοῦ ἐπιστρέψαι τὸν βασιλέα;
10καὶ Ἀβεσσαλώμ, ὃν ἐχρίσαμεν ἐφ’ ἡμῶν, ἀπέθανεν ἐν τῷ πολέμῳ, καὶ νῦν ἱνατί ὑμεῖς κωφεύετε τοῦ ἐπιστρέψαι τὸν βασιλέα;
10And Abessalom, whom we anointed over us, is dead in battle; and now why are you silent about bringing back the king? And the word of all Israēl came to the king. 10And Abessalom, whom we anointed over us, is dead in battle; and now why are you silent about bringing back the king? And the word of all Israēl came to the king.

11 [M 19:12]And king David sent to Zadok and to Abiathar the priests, saying, Speak to the elders of Judah, saying, Why are you the last to bring the king back to his house? seeing the speech of all Israēl is come to the king, even to his house.

11καὶ βασιλεὺς Δαυὶδ ἀπέστειλεν πρὸς Σαδὼκ καὶ πρὸς Ἀβιαθὰρ τοὺς ἱερεῖς λέγων Λαλήσατε πρὸς τοὺς πρεσβυτέρους Ἰούδα λέγοντες Ἵνα τί γίνεσθε ἔσχατοι τοῦ ἐπιστρέψαι τὸν βασιλέα εἰς τὸν οἶκον αὐτοῦ;
11καὶ βασιλεὺς Δαυὶδ ἀπέστειλε πρὸς Σαδὼκ καὶ πρὸς Ἀβιάθαρ τοὺς ἱερεῖς λέγων· λαλήσατε πρὸς τοὺς πρεσβυτέρους Ἰούδα λέγοντες· ἱνατί γίνεσθε ἔσχατοι τοῦ ἐπιστρέψαι τὸν βασιλέα εἰς τὸν οἶκον αὐτοῦ;
11And king David sent to Sadōk and Abiathar the priests, saying, Speak to the elders of Israēl, saying, Why are you the last to bring back the king to his house? whereas the word of all Israēl is come to the king to his house. 11And king David sent to Sadōk and Abiathar the priests, saying, Speak to the elders of Israēl, saying, Why are you the last to bring back the king to his house? whereas the word of all Israēl is come to the king to his house.

12 [M 19:13]You are my brothers, you are my bones and my flesh; therefore then are you the last to bring back the king?

12ἀδελφοί μου ὑμεῖς, ὀστᾶ μου καὶ σάρκες μου ὑμεῖς, καὶ ἵνα τί γίνεσθε ἔσχατοι τοῦ ἐπιστρέψαι τὸν βασιλέα εἰς τὸν οἶκον αὐτοῦ; 12ἀδελφοί μου ὑμεῖς, ὀστᾶ μου καὶ σάρκες μου ὑμεῖς, ἱνατί γίνεσθε ἔσχατοι τοῦ ἐπιστρέψαι τὸν βασιλέα εἰς τὸν οἶκον αὐτοῦ;
12You are my brothers, you are my bones and my flesh: why are you the last to bring back the king to his house? 12You are my brothers, you are my bones and my flesh: why are you the last to bring back the king to his house?

13 [M 19:14]And say you to Amasa, Are you not of my bone, and of my flesh? God do so to me, and more also, if you are not captain of the army before me continually in the room of Jōab.

13καὶ τῷ Ἀμεσσαῒ ἐρεῖτε Οὐχὶ ὀστοῦν μου καὶ σάρξ μου σύ;
13καὶ τῷ Ἀμεσσαῒ ἐρεῖτε· οὐχὶ ὀστοῦν μου καὶ σάρξ μου σύ;
13And you shall say to Amessai, Are you not my bone and my flesh? And now God do so to me, and more also, if you shall not be commander of the army before me continually in the room of Jōab. 13And you shall say to Amessai, Are you not my bone and my flesh? And now God do so to me, and more also, if you shall not be commander of the army before me continually in the room of Jōab.

14 [M 19:15]And he bowed the heart of all the men of Judah, even as the heart of one man; so that they sent this word to the king, Return you, and all your servants.

14And he bowed the heart of all the men of Jouda as that of one man; and they sent to the king, saying, Return you, and all your servants. 14And he bowed the heart of all the men of Jouda as that of one man; and they sent to the king, saying, Return you, and all your servants.

15 [M 19:16]So the king returned, and came to Jordan. And Judah came to Gilgal, to go to meet the king, to conduct the king over Jordan.

15And the king returned, and came as far s Jordan. And the men of Jouda came to Galgala on their way to meet the king, to cause the king to pass over Jordan. 15And the king returned, and came as far s Jordan. And the men of Jouda came to Galgala on their way to meet the king, to cause the king to pass over Jordan.

16 [M 19:17]And Shimei the son of Gera, a Benjamite, which was of Bahurim, hurried and came down with the men of Judah to meet king David.

16And Shimei the son of Gera, the Benjamite, of Baurim, hurried and went down with the men of Jouda to meet king David. 16And Shimei the son of Gera, the Benjamite, of Baurim, hurried and went down with the men of Jouda to meet king David.

17 [M 19:18]And there were 1000 men of Benjamin with him, and Ziba the servant of the house of Saul, and his fifteen sons and his 20 servants with him; and they went over Jordan before the king.

17And 1000 men of Benjamin were with him, and Siba the servant of the house of Saul, and his fifteen sons with him, and his twenty servants with him; and they went directly down to Jordan before the king, 17And 1000 men of Benjamin were with him, and Siba the servant of the house of Saul, and his fifteen sons with him, and his twenty servants with him; and they went directly down to Jordan before the king,

18 [M 19:19]And there went over a ferry boat to carry over the king’s household, and to do what he thought good. And Shimei the son of Gera fell down before the king, as he came over Jordan;

18and they performed the service of bringing the king over; and there went over a ferry-boat to remove the household of the king, and to do what was right in his eyes. And Shimei the son of Gera fell on his face before the king, as he went over Jordan; 18and they performed the service of bringing the king over; and there went over a ferry-boat to remove the household of the king, and to do what was right in his eyes. And Shimei the son of Gera fell on his face before the king, as he went over Jordan;

19 [M 19:20]And said to the king, Don’t let my lord impute iniquity to me, neither do you remember what your servant did perversely the day that my lord the king went out of Jerusalem, that the king should take it to his heart.

19and said to the king, Don’t let my lord now impute iniquity, and remember not all the iniquity of your servant in the day in which my lord went out from Jerusalem, so that the king should mind it. 19and said to the king, Don’t let my lord now impute iniquity, and remember not all the iniquity of your servant in the day in which my lord went out from Jerusalem, so that the king should mind it.

20 [M 19:21]For your servant knows that I have sinned; therefore, behold, I am come the first this day of all the house of Joseph to go down to meet my lord the king.

20For your servant knows that I have sinned: and, behold, I am come today before all Israēl and the house of Joseph, to go down and meet my lord the king. 20For your servant knows that I have sinned: and, behold, I am come today before all Israēl and the house of Joseph, to go down and meet my lord the king.

21 [M 19:22]But Abishai the son of Zeruiah answered and said, Shall not Shimei be put to death for this, because he cursed Yahweh’s anointed?

21καὶ ἀπεκρίθη Ἀβεσσὰ υἱὸς Σαρουίας καὶ εἶπεν Μὴ ἀντὶ τούτου οὐ θανατωθήσεται Σεμεΐ, ὅτι κατηράσατο τὸν χριστὸν κυρίου; 21καὶ ἀπεκρίθη Ἀβεσσὰ υἱὸς Σαρουΐας καὶ εἶπε· μὴ ἀντὶ τούτου οὐ θανατωθήσεται Σεμεΐ, ὅτι κατηράσατο τὸν χριστὸν Κυρίου;
21And Abessai the son of Saruia answered and said, Shall not Shimei therefore be put to death, because he cursed the Lord’s anointed? 21And Abessai the son of Saruia answered and said, Shall not Shimei therefore be put to death, because he cursed the Lord’s anointed?

22 [M 19:23]And David said, What have I to do with you, you sons of Zeruiah, that you should this day be adversaries to me? shall there any man be put to death this day in Israēl? for I don’t know that I am this day king over Israēl?

22καὶ εἶπεν Δαυὶδ Τί ἐμοὶ καὶ ὑμῖν, υἱοὶ Σαρουίας, ὅτι γίνεσθέ μοι σήμερον εἰς ἐπίβουλον;
22καὶ εἶπε Δαυίδ· τί ἐμοὶ καὶ ὑμῖν, υἱοὶ Σαρουΐας, ὅτι γίνεσθέ μοι σήμερον εἰς ἐπίβουλον;
22And David said, What have I to do with you, you sons of Saruia, that you as it were lie in wait against me this day? today no man in Israēl shall be put to death, for I don’t know if I this day reign over Israēl. 22And David said, What have I to do with you, you sons of Saruia, that you as it were lie in wait against me this day? today no man in Israēl shall be put to death, for I don’t know if I this day reign over Israēl.

23 [M 19:24]Therefore the king said to Shimei, You shall not die. And the king swore to him.

23And the king said to Shimei, You shall not die; and the king swore to him. 23And the king said to Shimei, You shall not die; and the king swore to him.

24 [M 19:25]And Mephibosheth the son of Saul came down to meet the king, and had neither dressed his feet, nor trimmed his beard, nor washed his clothes, from the day the king departed until the day he came again in peace.

24And Memphibosthe the son of Saul’s son went down to meet the king, and had not dressed his feet, nor pared his nails, nor shaved himself, neither had he washed his garments, from the day that the king departed, until the day when he arrived in peace. 24And Memphibosthe the son of Saul’s son went down to meet the king, and had not dressed his feet, nor pared his nails, nor shaved himself, neither had he washed his garments, from the day that the king departed, until the day when he arrived in peace.

25 [M 19:26]And it came to be, when he came to Jerusalem to meet the king, that the king said to him, Why didn’t go you with me, Mephibosheth?

25καὶ ἐγένετο ὅτε εἰσῆλθεν εἰς Ἱερουσαλὴμ εἰς ἀπάντησιν τοῦ βασιλέως, καὶ εἶπεν αὐτῷ βασιλεύς Τί ὅτι οὐκ ἐπορεύθης μετ’ ἐμοῦ, Μεμφιβοσθέ; 25καὶ ἐγένετο ὅτε εἰσῆλθεν εἰς Ἱερουσαλὴμ εἰς ἀπάντησιν τοῦ βασιλέως, καὶ εἶπε αὐτῷ βασιλεύς· τί ὅτι οὐκ ἐπορεύθης μετ’ ἐμοῦ, Μεμφιβοσθέ;
25And it happened when he went into Jerusalem to meet the king, that the king said to him, Why did you not go with me, Memphibosthe? 25And it happened when he went into Jerusalem to meet the king, that the king said to him, Why did you not go with me, Memphibosthe?

26 [M 19:27]And he answered, My lord, Oh king, my servant deceived me; for your servant said, I will saddle me a donkey, that I may ride on it, and go to the king; because your servant is lame.

26And Memphibosthe said to him, My lord, Oh king, my servant deceived me; for your servant said to him, Saddle me the donkey, and I will ride on it, and go with the king; for your servant is lame. 26And Memphibosthe said to him, My lord, Oh king, my servant deceived me; for your servant said to him, Saddle me the donkey, and I will ride on it, and go with the king; for your servant is lame.

27 [M 19:28]And he has slandered your servant to my lord the king; but my lord the king is as an angel of God: do therefore what is good in your eyes.

27And he has dealt craftily with your servant to my lord the king; but my lord the king is as an angel of God, and do you what is good in your eyes. 27And he has dealt craftily with your servant to my lord the king; but my lord the king is as an angel of God, and do you what is good in your eyes.

28 [M 19:29]For all of my father’s house were but dead men before my lord the king: yet did you set your servant among those who ate at your own table. What right therefore have I yet to cry any more to the king?

28ὅτι οὐκ ἦν πᾶς οἶκος τοῦ πατρός μου ἀλλ’ ὅτι ἄνδρες θανάτου τῷ κυρίῳ μου τῷ βασιλεῖ, καὶ ἔθηκας τὸν δοῦλόν σου ἐν τοῖς ἐσθίουσιν τὴν τράπεζάν σου· καὶ τί ἐστίν μοι ἔτι δικαίωμα καὶ τοῦ κεκραγέναι με ἔτι πρὸς τὸν βασιλέα; 28ὅτι οὐκ ἦν πᾶς οἶκος τοῦ πατρός μου, ἀλλ’ ὅτι ἄνδρες θανάτου τῷ κυρίῳ μου τῷ βασιλεῖ, καὶ ἔθηκας τὸν δοῦλόν σου ἐν τοῖς ἐσθίουσι τὴν τράπεζάν σου· καὶ τί ἔστι μοι ἔτι δικαίωμα καὶ τοῦ κεκραγέναι με ἔτι πρὸς τὸν βασιλέα;
28For all the house of my father were but as dead men before my lord the king; yet you have set your servant among those who eat at your table; and what right have I any longer even to cry to the king? 28For all the house of my father were but as dead men before my lord the king; yet you have set your servant among those who eat at your table; and what right have I any longer even to cry to the king?

29 [M 19:30]And the king said to him, Why speak you any more of your matters? I have said, You and Ziba divide the land.

29καὶ εἶπεν αὐτῷ βασιλεύς Ἵνα τί λαλεῖς ἔτι τοὺς λόγους σου;
29καὶ εἶπε αὐτῷ βασιλεύς· ἱνατί λαλεῖς ἔτι τοὺς λόγους σου;
29And the king said to him, Why speak you any longer of your matters? I have said, You and Siba shall divide the land. 29And the king said to him, Why speak you any longer of your matters? I have said, You and Siba shall divide the land.

30 [M 19:31]And Mephibosheth said to the king, Yes, let him take all, since my lord the king is come again in peace to his own house.

30And Memphibosthe said to the king, Yes, let him take all, since my lord the king has come in peace to his house. 30And Memphibosthe said to the king, Yes, let him take all, since my lord the king has come in peace to his house.

31 [M 19:32]And Barzillai the Gileadite came down from Rogelim, and went over Jordan with the king, to conduct him over Jordan.

31And Berzelli the Galaadite came down from Rogellim, and crossed over Jordan with the king, that he might conduct the king over Jordan. 31And Berzelli the Galaadite came down from Rogellim, and crossed over Jordan with the king, that he might conduct the king over Jordan.

32 [M 19:33]Now Barzillai was a very aged man, even80 years old; and he had provided the king of sustenance while he lay at Mahanaim; for he was a very great man.

32And Berzelli was a very old man, eighty years old; and he had maintained the king when he dwelt in Manaim; for he was a very great man. 32And Berzelli was a very old man, eighty years old; and he had maintained the king when he dwelt in Manaim; for he was a very great man.

33 [M 19:34]And the king said to Barzillai, Come you over with me, and I will feed you with me in Jerusalem.

33And the king said to Berzelli, You shall go over with me, and I will nourish your old age with me in Jerusalem. 33And the king said to Berzelli, You shall go over with me, and I will nourish your old age with me in Jerusalem.

34 [M 19:35]And Barzillai said to the king, How long have I to live, that I should go up with the king to Jerusalem?

34καὶ εἶπεν Βερζελλὶ πρὸς τὸν βασιλέα Πόσαι ἡμέραι ἐτῶν ζωῆς μου, ὅτι ἀναβήσομαι μετὰ τοῦ βασιλέως εἰς Ἱερουσαλήμ; 34καὶ εἶπε Βερζελλὶ πρὸς τὸν βασιλέα· πόσαι ἡμέραι ἐτῶν ζωῆς μου, ὅτι ἀναβήσομαι μετὰ τοῦ βασιλέως εἰς Ἱερουσαλήμ;
34And Berzelli said to the king, How many are the days of the years of my life, that I should go up with the king to Jerusalem? 34And Berzelli said to the king, How many are the days of the years of my life, that I should go up with the king to Jerusalem?

35 [M 19:36]I am this day80 years old; and can I discern between good and evil? can your servant taste what I eat or what I drink? can I hear any more the voice of singing men and singing women? therefore then should your servant be yet a burden to my lord the king?

35υἱὸς ὀγδοήκοντα ἐτῶν ἐγώ εἰμι σήμερον· μὴ γνώσομαι ἀνὰ μέσον ἀγαθοῦ καὶ κακοῦ;
γεύσεται δοῦλός σου ἔτι φάγομαι πίομαι;
ἀκούσομαι ἔτι φωνὴν ᾀδόντων καὶ ᾀδουσῶν;
ἵνα τί ἔσται ἔτι δοῦλός σου εἰς φορτίον ἐπὶ τὸν κύριόν μου τὸν βασιλέα;
35υἱὸς ὀγδοήκοντα ἐτῶν ἐγώ εἰμι σήμερον· μὴ γνώσομαι ἀνὰ μέσον ἀγαθοῦ καὶ κακοῦ;
εἰ γεύσεται δοῦλός σου ἔτι ὃν φάγομαι πίομαι;
ἀκούσομαι ἔτι φωνὴν ᾀδόντων καὶ ᾀδουσῶν;
καὶ ἱνατί ἔσται ἔτι δοῦλός σου εἰς φορτίον ἐπὶ τὸν κύριόν μου τὸν βασιλέα;
35I am this day eighty years old: can I then distinguish between good and evil? Can your servant taste any longer what I eat or drink? can I any longer hear the voice of singing men or singing women? And why shall your servant any longer be a burden to my lord the king? 35I am this day eighty years old: can I then distinguish between good and evil? Can your servant taste any longer what I eat or drink? can I any longer hear the voice of singing men or singing women? And why shall your servant any longer be a burden to my lord the king?

36 [M 19:37]Your servant will go a little way over Jordan with the king; and why should the king recompense it me with such a reward?

36ὡς βραχὺ διαβήσεται δοῦλός σου τὸν Ἰορδάνην μετὰ τοῦ βασιλέως· καὶ ἵνα τί ἀνταποδίδωσίν μοι βασιλεὺς τὴν ἀνταπόδοσιν ταύτην; 36ὡς βραχὺ διαβήσεται δοῦλός σου τὸν Ἰορδάνην μετὰ τοῦ βασιλέως· καὶ ἱνατί ἀνταποδίδωσί μοι βασιλεὺς τὴν ἀνταπόδοσιν ταύτην;
36Your servant will go a little way over Jordan with the king; and why does the king return me this recompense? 36Your servant will go a little way over Jordan with the king; and why does the king return me this recompense?

37 [M 19:38]Let your servant, please, turn back again, that I may die in my own city, and be buried by the grave of my father and of my mother. But behold your servant Chimham; let him go over with my lord the king; and do to him what shall seem good to you.

37Let, please, your servant remain, and I will die in my city, by the tomb of my father and of my mother. And, behold, your servant Chamaam shall go over with my lord the king; and do you to him as it seems good in your eyes. 37Let, please, your servant remain, and I will die in my city, by the tomb of my father and of my mother. And, behold, your servant Chamaam shall go over with my lord the king; and do you to him as it seems good in your eyes.

38 [M 19:39]And the king answered, Chimham shall go over with me, and I will do to him what shall seem good to you; and whatever you shall require of me, that will I do for you.

38And the king said, Let Chamaam go over with me, and I will do to him what is good in my sight; and whatever you shall choose at my hand, I will do for you. 38And the king said, Let Chamaam go over with me, and I will do to him what is good in my sight; and whatever you shall choose at my hand, I will do for you.

39 [M 19:40]And all the people went over Jordan. And when the king came over, the king kissed Barzillai, and blessed him; and he returned to his own place.

39And all the people went over Jordan, and the king went over; and the king kissed Berzelli, and blessed him; and he returned to his place. 39And all the people went over Jordan, and the king went over; and the king kissed Berzelli, and blessed him; and he returned to his place.

40 [M 19:41]Then the king went on to Gilgal, and Chimham went on with him; and all the people of Judah conducted the king, and also half the people of Israēl.

40And the king went over to Galgala, and Chamaam went over with him; and all the men of Jouda went over with the king, and also half the people of Israēl. 40And the king went over to Galgala, and Chamaam went over with him; and all the men of Jouda went over with the king, and also half the people of Israēl.

41 [M 19:42]And, behold, all the men of Israēl came to the king, and said to the king, Why have our brothers the men of Judah stolen you away, and have brought the king, and his household, and all David’s men with him, over Jordan?

41καὶ ἰδοὺ πᾶς ἀνὴρ Ἰσραὴλ παρεγένοντο πρὸς τὸν βασιλέα καὶ εἶπον πρὸς τὸν βασιλέα Τί ὅτι ἔκλεψάν σὲ οἱ ἀδελφοὶ ἡμῶν ἀνὴρ Ἰούδα καὶ διεβίβασαν τὸν βασιλέα καὶ τὸν οἶκον αὐτοῦ τὸν Ἰορδάνην καὶ πάντες ἄνδρες Δαυὶδ μετ’ αὐτοῦ; 41καὶ ἰδοὺ πᾶς ἀνὴρ Ἰσραὴλ παρεγένοντο πρὸς τὸν βασιλέα καὶ εἶπε πρὸς τὸν βασιλέα· τί ὅτι ἔκλεψάν σε οἱ ἀδελφοὶ ἡμῶν ἀνὴρ Ἰούδα καὶ διεβίβασαν τὸν βασιλέα καὶ τὸν οἶκον αὐτοῦ τὸν Ἰορδάνην καὶ πάντες ἄνδρες Δαυὶδ μετ’ αὐτοῦ;
41And behold, all the men of Israēl came to the king, and said to the king, Why have our brothers the men of Jouda stolen you away, and caused the king and all his house to pass over Jordan, and all the men of David with him? 41And behold, all the men of Israēl came to the king, and said to the king, Why have our brothers the men of Jouda stolen you away, and caused the king and all his house to pass over Jordan, and all the men of David with him?

42 [M 19:43]And all the men of Judah answered the men of Israēl, Because the king is near of kin to us; therefore then be angry for this matter? have we eaten at all of the king’s cost? or has he given us any gift?

42καὶ ἀπεκρίθη πᾶς ἀνὴρ Ἰούδα πρὸς ἄνδρα Ἰσραὴλ καὶ εἶπαν Διότι ἐγγίζει πρός με βασιλεύς· καὶ ἵνα τί οὕτως ἐθυμώθης περὶ τοῦ λόγου τούτου;
μὴ βρώσει ἐφάγαμεν ἐκ τοῦ βασιλέως, δόμα ἔδωκεν ἄρσιν ἦρεν ἡμῖν;
42καὶ ἀπεκρίθη πᾶς ἀνὴρ Ἰούδα πρὸς ἄνδρα Ἰσραὴλ καὶ εἶπαν· διότι ἐγγίζει πρός με βασιλεύς· καὶ ἱνατί οὕτως ἐθυμώθης περὶ τοῦ λόγου τούτου;
μὴ βρώσει ἐφάγαμεν ἐκ τοῦ βασιλέως, δόμα ἔδωκεν ἄρσιν ᾖρεν ἡμῖν;
42And all the men of Jouda answered the men of Israēl, and said, Because the king is near of kin to us; and why were you thus angry concerning this matter? have we indeed eaten of the king’s food? or has he given us a gift, or has he sent us a portion? 42And all the men of Jouda answered the men of Israēl, and said, Because the king is near of kin to us; and why were you thus angry concerning this matter? have we indeed eaten of the king’s food? or has he given us a gift, or has he sent us a portion?

43 [M 19:44]And the men of Israēl answered the men of Judah, and said, We have ten parts in the king, and we have also more right in David than you: why then did you despise us, that our advice should not be first had in bringing back our king? And the words of the men of Judah were fiercer than the words of the men of Israēl.

43καὶ ἀπεκρίθη ἀνὴρ Ἰσραὴλ τῷ ἀνδρὶ Ἰούδα καὶ εἶπεν δέκα χεῖρές μοι ἐν τῷ βασιλεῖ, καὶ πρωτότοκος ἐγὼ σύ, καί γε ἐν τῷ Δαυὶδ εἰμὶ ὑπὲρ σέ· καὶ ἵνα τί τοῦτο ὕβρισάς με καὶ οὐκ ἐλογίσθη λόγος μου πρῶτός μοι τοῦ ἐπιστρέψαι τὸν βασιλέα ἐμοί;
43καὶ ἀπεκρίθη ἀνὴρ Ἰσραὴλ τῷ ἀνδρὶ Ἰούδα καὶ εἶπε· δέκα χεῖρές μοι ἐν τῷ βασιλεῖ, καὶ πρωτότοκος ἐγὼ σύ, καί γε ἐν τῷ Δαυίδ εἰμι ὑπὲρ σέ· καὶ ἱνατί τοῦτο ὕβρισάς με καὶ οὐκ ἐλογίσθη λόγος μου πρῶτός μοι τοῦ ἐπιστρέψαι τὸν βασιλέα ἐμοί;
43And the men of Israēl answered the men of Jouda, and said, We have ten parts in the king, and we are older than you, we have also an interest in David above you; and why have you thus insulted us, and why wasn’t our advice taken before that of Jouda, to bring back our king? And the speech of the men of Jouda was sharper than the speech of the men of Israēl.
