topJudges ch 13

Chapter 13

AlexandrinusVaticanus

1 And the sons of Israēl did evil again in the sight of Yahweh; and Yahweh delivered them into the hand of the Philistines 40 years.

1 And the sons of Israēl continued to do what was evil against the Lord, and the Lord gave them over in the hand of allophyles 40 years. 1 And the sons of Israēl continued to do what was evil before the Lord, and the Lord gave them over in the hand of Phylistiim 40 years.

2 And there was a certain man of Zorah, of the family of the Danites, whose name was Manoah; and his wife was barren, and didn’t give birth.

2 And there was a man of Saraa, of the tribe of Dan, and his name was Manōe. And his wife was barren and was not giving birth. 2 And there was one man from Saraa, from a people of a relative of Dani, and his name was Manōe. And he had a barren wife, and she didn’t give birth.

3 And the angel of Yahweh appeared to the woman, and said to her, “Behold now, you are barren, and haven’t given birth; but you shall conceive, and give birth to a son.

3 And an angel of the Lord appeared to the woman and said to her, “Look please! You are barren and have not given birth. And you shall become pregnant and give birth to a son. 3 And an angel of the Lord appeared to the woman and said to her, “Look! you are barren and have not given birth. And you shall conceive a son.

4 Now therefore beware, please, and drink no wine no beer, and eat no unclean thing.

4 And now, be careful, and don’t drink wine and beer, and don’t eat anything unclean, 4 So then please be careful, and don’t drink wine and intoxicant, and don’t eat anything unclean,

5 For, look, you shall conceive, and bear a son; and no razor shall come on his head; for the child shall be a Nazarite to God from the womb; and he shall begin to deliver Israēl out of the hand of the Philistines.”

5 because look! you shall become pregnant and give birth to a son. And iron shall not come on his head, for the boy shall be consecrated, a nazirite to God from the womb. And he shall begin to deliver Israēl from the hand of allophyles.” 5 because look! you are pregnant and shall give birth to a son. And iron shall not come on his head, for the boy shall be a nazir of God from the belly. And he shall begin to deliver Israēl from the hand of Phylistiim.”

6 Then the woman came and told her husband, saying, “A man of God came to me, and his countenance was like the countenance of an angel of God, very terrible; but I didn’t ask him where he was from, neither did he tell me his name.

6 And the woman came and said to her husband, saying, “A man of God came to me, and his appearance was like the appearance of an angel of God, very remarkable, and I asked where he came from, and he didn’t tell me his name. 6 And the woman went inside and said to her husband, saying, “A man of God came to me, and his shape was like the shape of an angel of God, very fearsome, and I didn’t ask him where he came from, and he didn’t tell me his name.

7 But he said to me, ‘Behold, you shall conceive, and bear a son; and now drink no wine or beer, nor eat any unclean thing; for the child shall be a Nazarite to God from the womb to the day of his death.’ ”

7 And he said to me, ‘Look! you shall become pregnant and give birth to a son. And now, drink no wine and beer, and don’t eat any uncleanness, for the boy shall be a nazirite of God from the womb to the day of his death.’ ” 7 And he said to me, ‘Look! you are pregnant and shall give birth to a son. And now drink no wine or intoxicant, and don’t eat anything unclean, for the boy shall be holy to God from the womb to the day of his death.’ ”

8 Then Manoah entreated Yahweh, and said, “Oh my Lord, let the man of God which you sent come again to us, and teach us what we shall do to the child that shall be born.”

8 And Manōe implored the Lord and said, “By me, Lord, please let the man of God come whom you sent to us to enlighten us about what we are to do for the boy who is being born.” 8 And Manōe prayed to the Lord and said, “By me, Lord Adōnaie, about the man of God whom you sent, please let him come to us again, and let him instruct us as to what we are to do for the boy who is being born.”

9 And God listened to the voice of Manoah; and the angel of God came again to the woman as she sat in the field; but Manoah her husband wasn’t with her.

9 And God heard Manōe’s voice, and the angel of God came again to the woman as she sat in the field, but her husband Manōe wasn’t with her. 9 And God listened to Manōe’s voice, and the angel of God again came to the woman, and she was sitting in a field, and her husband Manōe wasn’t with her.

10 And the woman made haste, and ran, and showed her husband, and said to him, “Behold, the man has appeared to me, who came to me the other day.”

10 And the woman hurried and ran off and told her husband, “Look! the man who came to me the other day has appeared to me.” 10 And the woman hurried and ran and told her husband, “Look! the man who came to me in a day has appeared to me.”

11 And Manoah arose, and went after his wife, and came to the man, and said to him, “Are you the man who spoke to the woman?” And he said, “I am.”

11 καὶ ἀνέστη Μανωὲ καὶ ἐπορεύθη ὀπίσω τῆς γυναικὸς αὐτοῦ πρὸς τὸν ἄνδρα καὶ εἶπεν αὐτῷ Εἰ σὺ εἶ ἀνὴρ λαλήσας πρὸς τὴν γυναῖκα;
11 καὶ ἀνέστη καὶ ἐπορεύθη Μανωὲ ὀπίσω τῆς γυναικὸς αὐτοῦ καὶ ἦλθεν πρὸς τὸν ἄνδρα καὶ εἶπεν αὐτῷ· εἰ σὺ εἶ ἀνὴρ λαλήσας πρὸς τὴν γυναῖκα;
11 And Manōe got up and went after his wife towards the man and said to him, “Are you the man who spoke to this woman?” And the angel said, “I am.” 11 And Manōe got up and went after his wife and came to the man and said to him, “Are you the man who spoke to this woman?” And the angel said, “I am.”

12 And Manoah said, “Now let your words come to pass. What shall be the boy's way of life and his work?”

12 καὶ εἶπεν Μανωὲ Νῦν δὴ ἐλθόντος τοῦ ῥήματός σου τί ἔσται τὸ κρίμα τοῦ παιδαρίου καὶ τὰ ἔργα αὐτοῦ; 12 καὶ εἶπεν Μανωέ· νῦν ἐλεύσεται λόγος σου· τίς ἔσται κρίσις τοῦ παιδίου καὶ τὰ ποιήματα αὐτοῦ;
12 And Manōe said, “Now please, when your word comes, what shall be the boy’s judgment, and what will his works be?” 12 And Manōe said, “Now your word will come; what is to be the boy’s decision, and what will his deeds be?”

13 And the angel of Yahweh said to Manoah, “Of all that I said to the woman let her beware.

13 And the angel of the Lord said to Manōe, “Let him keep away from all the things that I spoke to the woman about. 13 And the angel of the Lord said to Manōe, “He will keep away from all the things that I have spoken to the woman about.

14 She may not eat of anything that comes of the vine, neither let her drink wine or beer, nor eat any unclean thing; let her observe all that I commanded her.”

14 He shall not eat of anything that comes from the vine. And he is not to drink wine and beer and he is not to eat any unclean thing. He is to follow everything that I commanded her.” 14 He shall not eat of anything that comes from the vine of wine. And he is not to drink wine and beer, intoxicant, and he is not to eat any unclean thing. He shall follow everything that I commanded her.”

15 And Manoah said to the angel of Yahweh, “Please, let’s detain you, until we shall have made ready a kid for you.”

15 And Manōe said to the angel of the Lord, “Please let us constrain you, and we will prepare a kid of goats before you.” 15 And Manōe said to the angel of the Lord, “Let’s detain you here, and let’s prepare a kid of goats before you.”

16 And the angel of Yahweh said to Manoah, “Though you detain me, I won’t eat of your bread; and if you will offer a burnt offering, you must offer it to Yahweh.” For Manoah didn’t know that he was an angel of Yahweh.

16 And the angel of the Lord said to Manōe, “If you constrain me, I will not eat of your loaves, and if you make a whole burnt offering, you shall offer it to the Lord.” (Because Manōe didn’t know that he was an angel of the Lord.) 16 And the angel of the Lord said to Manōe, “If you detain me, I will not eat any of your loaves, and if you make a whole burnt offering, you shall offer it to the Lord.” (For Manōe didn’t know that he was an angel of the Lord.)

17 And Manoah said to the angel of Yahweh, “What is your name, that when your sayings come to pass we may do you honour?”

17 καὶ εἶπεν Μανωὲ πρὸς τὸν ἄγγελον κυρίου Τί ὄνομά σοι, ἵνα, ὅταν ἔλθῃ τὸ ῥῆμά σου, δοξάσωμέν σε; 17 καὶ εἶπεν Μανωὲ πρὸς τὸν ἄγγελον κυρίου· τί τὸ ὄνομά σοι, ὅτι ἔλθοι τὸ ῥῆμά σου, καὶ δοξάσομέν σε;
17 And Manōe said to the angel of the Lord, “What is your name in order that we may honour you when your word comes?” 17 And Manōe said to the angel of the Lord, “What is your name that your word may come, and we will honour you.”?

18 And the angel of Yahweh said to him, “Why do you ask thus after my name, seeing it is secret?”

18 καὶ εἶπεν αὐτῷ ἄγγελος κυρίου Ἵνα τί τοῦτο ἐρωτᾷς τὸ ὄνομά μου;
18 καὶ εἶπεν αὐτῷ ἄγγελος κυρίου· εἰς τί τοῦτο ἐρωτᾷς τὸ ὄνομά μου;
18 And the angel of the Lord said to him, “Why do you ask this, my name? It is amazing.” 18 And the angel of the Lord said to him, “To what end do you ask this, my name? It is amazing.”

19 So Manoah took a kid with a meat offering, and offered it on a rock to Yahweh; and the angel did wondrously; and Manoah and his wife looked on.

19 And Manōe took the kid of goats and the sacrifice and offered it on the rock to the Lord, to the Lord who works wonders, and Manōe and his wife were looking on. 19 And Manōe took the kid of goats and the sacrifice and offered it on the rock to the Lord. And he separated to act, and Manōe and his wife were watching.

20 For it happened, when the flame went up toward heaven from off the altar, that the angel of Yahweh ascended in the flame of the altar. And Manoah and his wife looked on it, and fell on their faces to the ground.

20 And it came to be, when the flame went up above the altar toward the sky, that the angel of the Lord ascended in the flame, and Manōe and his wife were looking on, and they fell on their face to the ground. 20 And it came to be, when the flame went up above the altar to the sky, that the angel of the Lord ascended in the flame of the altar, and Manōe and his wife were watching, and they fell on their face to the ground.

21 But the angel of Yahweh didn’t appear anymore to Manoah and to his wife. Then Manoah knew that he was an angel of Yahweh.

21 And the angel of the Lord didn’t continue still to appear to Manōe and to his wife. Then Manōe realized that it was an angel of the Lord. 21 And the angel of the Lord didn’t continue still to appear to Manōe and to his wife. Then Manōe realized that he was an angel of the Lord.

22 And Manoah said to his wife, “We shall surely die, because we have seen God.”

22 And Manōe said to his wife, “We shall die by death, because we have seen God.” 22 And Manōe said to his wife, “We shall die by death, because we saw God.”

23 But his wife said to him, “If Yahweh were pleased to kill us, he would not have received a burnt offering and a meat offering at our hands, neither would he have shown us all these things, nor would he have told us these things at this time.”

23 And his wife said to him, “If the Lord had desired to kill us, he would not have accepted a whole burnt offering and a sacrifice from our hands, and he would not have illuminated us about all these things, and he would not have made them audible to us.” 23 And his wife said to him, “If the Lord had wanted to kill us, he would not have taken a whole burnt offering and a sacrifice from our hand, and he would not have shown us all these things, and he would not have caused us to hear them when it was the right time.”

24 And the woman gave birth to a son, and called his name Samson; and the child grew, and Yahweh blessed him.

24 And the woman gave birth to a son and called his name Sampsōn. And the Lord blessed him and the boy grew. 24 And the woman gave birth to a son and called his name Sampsōn. And the boy came to maturity and the Lord blessed him.

25 And the Spirit of Yahweh began to move him at times in the camp of Dan between Zorah and Eshtaol.

25 And a spirit of the Lord began to accompany him in the camp of Dan between Saraa and between Esthaol. 25 And a spirit of the Lord began to go out with him in the camp of Dan and between Saraa and between Eshtaol.
