Chapter 14

AlexandrinusVaticanus

1 And Samson went down to Timnath, and saw a woman in Timnath of the daughters of the Philistines.

1 And Sampsōn went down to Thamnatha, and at Thamnatha he saw a woman of the daughters of the allophyles, and she was pleasing before him. 1 And Sampsōn went down to Thamnatha, and in Thamnatha he saw a woman of the daughters of the allophyles.

2 And he came up, and told his father and his mother, and said, “I have seen a woman in Timnath of the daughters of the Philistines; now therefore get her for me for a wife.”

2 And he went up and told his father and his mother and said, “I have seen a woman at Thamnatha from the daughters of the allophyles, and now, get her for me for a wife.” 2 And he went up and told his father and his mother and said, “I have seen a woman at Thamnatha of the daughters of Phylistiim, and now, get her for me for a wife.”

3 Then his father and his mother said to him, “Is there no woman among the daughters of your brothers, or among all my people, that you go to take a wife of the uncircumcised Philistines?” And Samson said to his father, “Get her for me; for she pleases me well.”

3 καὶ εἶπεν αὐτῷ πατὴρ αὐτοῦ καὶ μήτηρ αὐτοῦ Μὴ οὐκ ἔστιν ἀπὸ τῶν θυγατέρων τῶν ἀδελφῶν σου καὶ ἐν παντὶ τῷ λαῷ μου γυνή, ὅτι σὺ πορεύῃ λαβεῖν γυναῖκα ἐκ τῶν ἀλλοφύλων τῶν ἀπεριτμήτων;
3 καὶ εἶπεν αὐτῷ πατὴρ αὐτοῦ καὶ μήτηρ αὐτοῦ· μὴ οὔκ εἰσιν θυγατέρες τῶν ἀδελφῶν σου καὶ ἐκ παντὸς τοῦ λαοῦ μου γυνή, ὅτι σὺ πορεύῃ λαβεῖν γυναῖκα ἀπὸ τῶν ἀλλοφύλων τῶν ἀπεριτμήτων;
3 And his father and his mother said to him, “Is there not a woman from the daughters of your brothers and among all my people, that you will go to take a wife from the uncircumcised allophyles?” And Sampsōn said to his father, “Get this one for me, because she was pleasing in my sight.” 3 And his father and his mother said to him, “Is there not a woman from the daughters of your brothers and among all my people, that you will go to take a wife from the uncircumcised allophyles?” And Sampsōn said to his father, “Get this one for me, because she is straightforward in my sight.”

4 But his father and his mother didn’t know that it was of Yahweh, that he sought an occasion against the Philistines; for at that time the Philistines had dominion over Israēl.

4 And his father and his mother didn’t know that it was from the Lord, because he was seeking recompense from the allophyles. And at that time allophyles had dominion over the sons of Israēl. 4 And his father and his mother didn’t know that it was from the Lord, for he was seeking vengeance from the allophyles. And at that time the allophyles were dominating in Israēl.

5 Then Samson went down to Timnath with his father and his mother and came to the vineyards of Timnath. Suddenly, a young lion roared against him.

5 And Sampsōn went down, and his father and his mother, to Thamnatha. And he turned aside into a vineyard of Thamnatha, and look! a cub of lions roaring to meet him. 5 And Sampsōn went down, and his father and his mother, to Thamnatha. And he came as far as the vineyard of Thamnatha, and look! a lion’s cub roaring to meet him.

6 And the Spirit of Yahweh came mightily on him, and he tore him as he would have torn a kid, and he had nothing in his hand; but he didn’t tell his father or his mother what he had done.

6 And a spirit of the Lord made straight for him, and he tore it apart as he would tear apart a kid of goats, and there was nothing in his hand. And he didn’t tell his father or mother what he had done. 6 And a spirit of the Lord leaped on him, and he crushed it as he would crush a kid, and there was nothing in his hands. And he didn’t tell his father or his mother what he had done.

7 And he went down, and talked with the woman; and she pleased Samson well.

7 And they went down and talked with the woman, and she was pleasing before Sampsōn. 7 And they went down and talked with the woman, and she was approved in Sampsōn’s sight.

8 And after a time he returned to take her, and he turned aside to see the carcass of the lion; and, look, there was a swarm of bees and honey in the carcass of the lion.

8 And after days he returned to marry her, and he turned aside to see the carcass of the lion, and look! a swarm of bees in the mouth of the lion, and there was honey. 8 And after days he returned to marry her, and he turned aside to see the carcass of the lion, and see, an assembly of bees in the mouth of the lion, and honey.

9 And he took some of it in his hands, and went on eating, and came to his father and mother, and he gave some to them, and they ate; but he didn’t tell them that he had taken the honey out of the carcass of the lion.

9 And he took it out into his mouth and went on, going and eating. And he came to his father and to his mother, and he gave to them, and they ate. And he didn’t tell them that he had taken the honey from the condition of the lion. 9 And he took it out into his hands and was going on, going and eating. And he came to his father and his mother, and he gave to them, and they ate. And he didn’t tell them that he had taken the honey from the mouth of the lion.

10 So his father went down to the woman; and Samson made a feast there; for so the young men used to do.

10 And his father went down to the woman, and Sampsōn made a drinking party there for seven days, because the young men would do thus. 10 And his father went down to the woman, and Sampsōn made a drinking party there for seven days, because the young men do thus.

11 And it happened, when they saw him, that they brought thirty companions to be with him.

11 And it came to be, when they were afraid of him, that they appointed 30 companions for him, and they were with him. 11 And it came to be, when they saw him, that they took 30 invited ones, and they were with him.

12 And Samson said to them, “I will now put forth a riddle to you; if you can certainly answer it to me within the seven days of the feast, and solve it, then I will give you thirty sheets and thirty change of garments.

12 And Sampsōn said to them, “I will put forward a riddle for you, and if you tell me the riddle within the seven days of the drinking party, I will give you 30 linen garments and 30 robes. 12 And Sampsōn said to them, “I am putting forward a riddle for you. If telling, you tell it within the seven days of the drinking party and find it out, I will give you 30 linen garments and 30 robes of garments.

13 But if you cannot answer it to me, then you shall give me thirty sheets and thirty change of garments.” And they said to him, “Put forth your riddle, that we may hear it.”

13 And if you can’t tell me, you shall also give me 30 linen garments and 30 robes of garments.” And they said to him, “Put forward your riddle, and we will hear it.” 13 And if you can’t tell me, you shall also give me 30 linen garments and 30 robes of garments.” And they said to him, “Put forward your riddle, and we will hear it.”

14 And he said to them, “Out of the eater came forth meat, and out of the strong came forth sweetness.” And they couldn’t in three days explain the riddle.

14 καὶ εἶπεν αὐτοῖς· τί βρωτὸν ἐξῆλθεν ἐκ βιβρώσκοντος καὶ ἀπὸ ἰσχυροῦ γλυκύ;
14 And he said to them, “Out of the eater came out food, and out of a strong one came out something sweet.” And for three days they could not tell the riddle. 14 And he said to them, “What edible thing came out of the eater, and from the strong a sweet thing?” And for three days they could not tell the riddle.

15 And it happened on the seventh day, that they said to Samson’s wife, “Entice your husband, that he may declare to us the riddle, or else we will burn you and your father’s house with fire. Have you invited us to take what we have? Is that not so?”

15 καὶ ἐγένετο ἐν τῇ ἡμέρᾳ τῇ τετάρτῃ καὶ εἶπαν τῇ γυναικὶ Σαμψὼν Ἀπάτησον δὴ τὸν ἄνδρα σου καὶ ἀπαγγειλάτω σοί τὸ πρόβλημα, μήποτε ἐμπυρίσωμέν σὲ καὶ τὸν οἶκον τοῦ πατρός σου ἐν πυρί· πτωχεῦσαι ἐκαλέσατε ἡμᾶς; 15 καὶ ἐγένετο ἐν τῇ ἡμέρᾳ τῇ τετάρτῃ καὶ εἶπαν τῇ γυναικὶ Σαμψών· ἀπάτησον δὴ τὸν ἄνδρα σου καὶ ἀπαγγειλάτω σοί τὸ πρόβλημα, μήποτε κατακαύσωμέν σὲ καὶ τὸν οἶκον τοῦ πατρός σου ἐν πυρί· ἐκβιάσαι ἡμᾶς κεκλήκατε;
15 And it came to be in the fourth day that they said to Sampsōn’s wife, “Please deceive your husband, and let him tell you the riddle, or else we will burn you and your father’s house with fire. Did you invite us to be beggars?” 15 And it came to be in the fourth day that they said to Sampsōn’s wife, “Please deceive your husband, and let him tell you the riddle, or else we will burn you and your father’s house with fire. Have you invited us to force us out?”

16 And Samson’s wife wept before him, and said, “You just hate me, and don’t love me. You have put forth a riddle to the children of my people, and haven’t told it me.” And he said to her, “Listen, I haven’t told it to my father nor my mother, and shall I tell it to you?”

καὶ εἶπεν αὐτῇ Σαμψὼν Ἰδοὺ τῷ πατρί μου καὶ τῇ μητρί μου οὐκ ἀπήγγειλα αὐτό, καὶ σοί ἀπαγγελῶ;
16 καὶ ἔκλαυσεν γυνὴ Σαμψὼν πρὸς αὐτὸν καὶ εἶπεν· πλὴν μεμίσηκάς με καὶ οὐκ ἠγάπησάς με, ὅτι τὸ πρόβλημα, προεβάλου τοῖς υἱοῖς τοῦ λαοῦ μου, οὐκ ἀπήγγειλάς μοι· καὶ εἶπεν αὐτῇ Σαμψών· εἰ τῷ πατρί μου καὶ τῇ μητρί μου οὐκ ἀπήγγελκα, σοί ἀπαγγείλω;
16 And Sampsōn’s wife wept before him and said to him, “You hate me, and you don’t love me, for the riddle which you set for the sons of my people, you have not told it even to me.” And Sampsōn said to her, “Look! I have not told it to my father or my mother, and am I going to tell you?” 16 And Sampsōn’s wife wept before him and said, “But you hate me, and you don’t love me, for the riddle which you set for the sons of my people you have not told to me.” And Sampsōn said to her, “If I have not told it to my father or my mother, should I tell you?”

17 And she wept before him for the seven days, while their feast lasted; and it happened on the seventh day, that he told her, because she constantly pestered him. Then she told the riddle to the sons of her people.

17 And she wept before him during the seven days, them on which there was a party, and it came to be on the seventh day that he told her, because she exasperated him. And she told the sons of her people. 17 And she wept before him during the seven days on which they held the party, and it came to be on the seventh day that he told her, because she exasperated him. And she told the sons of her people.

18 And the men of the city said to him on the seventh day before the sun went down, “What is sweeter than honey? And what is stronger than a lion?” And he said to them, “If you had not plowed with my heifer, you would not have found out my riddle.”

18 καὶ εἶπαν αὐτῷ οἱ ἄνδρες τῆς πόλεως ἐν τῇ ἡμέρᾳ τῇ ἑβδόμῃ πρὶν δῦναι τὸν ἥλιον Τί γλυκύτερον μέλιτος, καὶ τί ἰσχυρότερον λέοντος;
18 καὶ εἶπαν αὐτῷ οἱ ἄνδρες τῆς πόλεως ἐν τῇ ἡμέρᾳ τῇ ἑβδόμῃ πρὸ τοῦ ἀνατεῖλαι τὸν ἥλιον· τί γλυκύτερον μέλιτος, καὶ τί ἰσχυρότερον λέοντος;
18 And the men of the city said to him on the seventh day before the sun went down, “What is sweeter than honey? And what is stronger than a lion?” And Sampsōn said to them, “If you had not subdued my heifer, you would not have found my riddle.” 18 And the men of the city said to him on the seventh day before the sun rose, “What is sweeter than honey? And what is stronger than a lion?” And Sampsōn said to them, “If you had not plowed with my heifer, you would not have known my riddle.”

19 And the Spirit of Yahweh came upon him, and he went down to Ashkelon, and killed thirty men of them, and took their spoil, and gave change of garments to those who expounded the riddle. And his anger was kindled, and he went up to his father’s house.

19 And a spirit of the Lord went straight for him, and he went down to Ascalōn. And from there he struck down 30 men and took their robes and gave them to those who had told the riddle. And Sampsōn was angry with anger, and he went back to his father’s house. 19 And a spirit of the Lord leaped on him, and he went down to Ascalōn. And he struck down 30 men of them and took their clothes and gave the robes to those who had told the riddle. And Sampsōn was angry with anger, and he went back to his father’s house.

20 But Samson’s wife was given to his companion, whom he had used as his friend.

20 And Sampsōn’s wife lived with his groomsman, who was his companion. 20 And Sampsōn’s wife was given to one of his friends, with whom he had been friendly.
