Chapter 15

AlexandrinusVaticanus

1 But it happened after a while, in the time of wheat harvest, that Samson visited his wife with a kid of the goats; and he said, “I will go in to my wife into the chamber.” But her father would not allow him to go in.

1 And it came to be after days, during the days of the wheat harvest, that Sampsōn went to visit his wife, bringing along a kid of goats. And he said, “I will go in to my wife, into the bedroom.” And her father would not allow him to go in to her. 1 And it came to be after days, during the days of the wheat harvest, that Sampsōn went to visit his wife with a kid of goats. And he said, “I will go in to my wife, into the bedroom.” And her father would not give him permission to go in.

2 And her father said, “I actually thought that you had utterly hated her; therefore I gave her to your companion. Isn’t her younger sister prettier than she? Take her, please, instead of her.”

2 καὶ εἶπεν πατὴρ αὐτῆς Εἴπας εἶπα ὅτι μισῶν ἐμίσησας αὐτήν, καὶ ἔδωκα αὐτὴν τῷ συνεταίρῳ σου οὐκ ἰδοὺ ἀδελφὴ αὐτῆς νεωτέρα κρείσσων αὐτῆς ἐστιν;
2 καὶ εἶπεν πατὴρ αὐτῆς λέγων· εἶπα ὅτι μισῶν ἐμίσησας αὐτήν, καὶ ἔδωκα αὐτὴν ἑνὶ τῶν ἐκ τῶν φίλων σου· μὴ οὐχὶ ἀδελφὴ αὐτῆς νεωτέρα αὐτῆς ἀγαθωτέρα ὑπὲρ αὐτήν;
2 And her father said, “After speaking, I said that while hating you hated her, and I gave her to your companion. Look! isn’t her younger sister better than she? Please let her be to you in her place.” 2 And her father said, “While speaking, I said that while hating you hated her, and I gave her to one of those from among your friends. Isn’t her younger sister better more than her? Please let her be to you in her place.”

3 And Samson said concerning them, “Now I shall be more blameless than the Philistines, though I do them a displeasure.”

3 And Sampsōn said to him, “I am without blame from the allophyles this once, for the fact that I do harm with you.” 3 And Sampsōn said to them, “I am without blame from the allophyles this once too, for the fact that I do evil with them.”

4 And Samson went and caught 300 foxes, and took firebrands, and turned them tail to tail, and put a firebrand in between their two tails.

4 And Sampsōn went and caught 300 foxes and took torches, and he fastened tail to tail and put one torch between the two tails, in the middle. 4 And Sampsōn went and caught 300 foxes and took torches, and he turned tail to tail and put one torch between the two tails and tied it.

5 And when he had set the brands on fire, he let them go into the standing corn of the Philistines, and they burned up both the sheaves, and also the standing corn, with the vineyards and olives.

5 And he ignited fire to the torches, and he sent the foxes off into the standing grain of the allophyles and burned up the heads of grain and what had been previously harvested, from the sheaf up to what stood and as far as vineyard and olive trees. 5 And he ignited fire to the torches and he sent the foxes off among the allophyles’ heads of grain, and they were burned from threshing-floor and up to standing heads of grain and up to vineyard and olive trees.

6 Then the Philistines said, “Who has done this?” And they answered, “Samson, the son-in-law of the Timnite, because he had taken his wife, and given her to his companion.” And the Philistines came up, and burned her and her father with fire.

6 καὶ εἶπαν οἱ ἀλλόφυλοι Τίς ἐποίησεν ταῦτα;
6 καὶ εἶπαν οἱ ἀλλόφυλοι· τίς ἐποίησεν ταῦτα;
6 And he set fire to the torches, and he sent the foxes off into the standing grain of the allophyles and burned up the ears of grain and what had been previously harvested, from the sheaf up to what stood and up to vineyard and olive trees. 6 And he put fire to the torches and he sent the foxes off among the allophyles’ ears of grain, and they were burned from threshing-floor and up to standing ears of grain and up to vineyard and olive trees.

7 And Samson said to them, “Though you have done this, yet I will take revenge on you, and after that I will cease.”

7 And Sampsōn said to them, “If you do thus, I will not be content unless I take my revenge from each and every one of you.” 7 And Sampsōn said to them, “If you treat her thus, because I will surely take revenge among you and finally cease.”

8 And he smote them hip and thigh with a great slaughter. Then he went down and dwelt on the top of the rock of Ētam.

8 And he struck them on the thigh, a great blow, and he went down and was staying by the stream in the cave of Ētam. 8 And he struck them shank on thigh, a great blow, and he went down and sat in a hole in the rock of Ētam.

9 Then the Philistines went up, and camped in Judah, and spread themselves in Lehi.

9 And the allophyles came up and encamped against Joudas, and they were thrown back at Lechi. 9 And the allophyles came up and encamped in Joudas, and they were thrown back at Levi.

10 And the men of Judah said, “Why have you come up against us?” And they answered, “We have come up to bind Samson, to do to him as he has done to us.”

10 καὶ εἶπαν αὐτοῖς πᾶς ἀνὴρ Ἰούδα Ἵνα τί ἀνέβητε ἐφ’ ἡμᾶς;
10 καὶ εἶπαν ἀνὴρ Ἰούδα· εἰς τί ἀνέβητε ἐφ’ ἡμᾶς;
10 And they said to them, every man of Joudas, “Why have you come up against us?” And the allophyles said, “To bind Sampsōn and to do to him as he did to us.” 10 And they said, a man of Joudas, “To what end have you come up against us?” And the allophyles said, “We have come up to bind Sampsōn and to do to him as he did to us.”

11 Then 3000 men of Judah went to the top of the rock of Ētam, and said to Samson, “Don’t you know that the Philistines are rulers over us? What is this that you have done to us?” And he said to them, “As they did to me, so I have done to them.”

11 καὶ κατέβησαν τρεῖς χιλιάδες ἀνδρῶν ἐξ Ἰούδα ἐπὶ τὴν ὀπὴν τῆς πέτρας Ἠτὰμ καὶ εἶπαν πρὸς Σαμψὼν Οὐκ οἶδας ὅτι ἄρχουσιν ἡμῶν οἱ ἀλλόφυλοι καὶ ἵνα τί ταῦτα ἐποίησας ἡμῖν;
11 καὶ κατέβησαν τρισχίλιοι ἄνδρες ἀπὸ Ἰούδα εἰς τρυμαλιὰν πέτρας Ἠτὰμ καὶ εἶπαν τῷ Σαμψών· οὐκ οἶδας ὅτι κυριεύουσιν οἱ ἀλλόφυλοι ἡμῶν, καὶ τί τοῦτο ἐποίησας ἡμῖν;
11 And 3000 men out of Joudas went down to the cave in the rock of Ētam, and they said to Sampsōn, “Don’t you know that the allophyles are ruling over us? And why have you done these things to us?” And Sampsōn said to them, “As they did to us, so I have done to them.” 11 And 3000 men from Joudas went down into a hole in the rock of Ētam, and they said to Sampsōn, “Don’t you know that the allophyles are our lords? And why have you done this to us?” And Sampsōn said to them, “As they did to me, so I have done to them.”

12 And they said to him, “We have come down to bind you, that we may deliver you into the hand of the Philistines.” And Samson said to them, “Swear to me, that you won’t fall on me yourselves.”

12 And they said to him, “We have come down to bind you and to give you into the hands of the allophyles.” And Sampsōn said to them, “Swear to me not to kill me yourselves and give me up to them, lest you yourselves come against me.” 12 And they said to him, “We have come down to bind you so that we may give you in the hand of the allophyles.” And Sampsōn said to them, “Swear to me, lest you yourselves gather against me.”

13 And they spoke to him, saying, “No; but we will bind you securely, and deliver you into their hand; but surely we won’t kill you.” And they bound him with two new cords, and brought him up from the rock.

13 And they swore to him, saying, “No, but we will bind you with a binding and give you into their hands, but we will not put you to death by death.” And they bound him with two new cords and led him up from the rock. 13 And they said to him, saying, “No, except that we will bind you with a binding and give you in their hand, and we will not put you to death by death.” And they bound him with two new cords and brought him up from that rock.

14 And when he came to Lehi, the Philistines shouted against him; and the Spirit of Yahweh came mightily on him, and the cords that were on his arms became as flax that was burned with fire, and his bands loosed from off his hands.

14 And he came as far as Jawbone, and the allophyles shouted in triumph to meet him and ran to meet up with him, and a spirit of the Lord made straight for him, and the cords that were on his arms became like flax when it smells fire, and the bonds were loosed from his arms. 14 And they came as far as Jawbone, and the allophyles shouted in triumph and ran to meet him, and a spirit of the Lord leaped on him, and the cords that were on his arms became like flax which was burned by fire, and his bonds melted from his hands.

15 And he found a fresh jawbone of a donkey, and reached out his hand, and took it, and killed a thousand men with it.

15 And he found a jawbone of a donkey thrown on the road and he stretched out his hand and took it, and with it he struck down a thousand men. 15 And he found a jawbone of a donkey cast aside and stretched out his hand and took it, and with it he struck down a thousand men.

16 And Samson said, “With the jawbone of a donkey, heaps on heaps, with the jaw of a donkey have I slain a thousand men.”

16 And Sampsōn said, “While wiping them out with a donkey’s jawbone, I have wiped them out, for with a donkey’s jawbone I have struck down a thousand men.” 16 And Sampsōn said, “While wiping them out with a donkey’s jawbone, I have wiped them out, for with the donkey’s jawbone I have struck down a thousand men.”

17 And it happened, when he had made an end of speaking, that he cast away the jawbone out of his hand, and called that place Ramath-Lehi.

17 And it came to be, when he had finished speaking, that he threw the jawbone from his hand, and he called that place Jawbone’s Slaying. 17 And it came to be, when he had ceased speaking, that he threw the jawbone from his hand, and he called that place Jawbone’s Slaying.

18 And he was very thirsty, and called on Yahweh, and said, “You have given this great deliverance into the hand of your servant; and now shall I die for thirst, and fall into the hand of the uncircumcised?”

18 καὶ ἐδίψησεν σφόδρα· καὶ ἐβόησεν πρὸς κύριον καὶ εἶπεν σὺ ἔδωκας ἐν χειρὶ τοῦ δούλου σου τὴν σωτηρίαν τὴν μεγάλην ταύτην, καὶ νῦν ἀποθανοῦμαι ἐν δίψει καὶ ἐμπεσοῦμαι ἐν χειρὶ τῶν ἀπεριτμήτων; 18 καὶ ἐδίψησεν σφόδρα, καὶ ἔκλαυσεν πρὸς κύριον καὶ εἶπεν· σὺ εὐδόκησας ἐν χειρὶ δούλου σου τὴν σωτηρίαν τὴν μεγάλην ταύτην, καὶ νῦν ἀποθανοῦμαι τῷ δίψει καὶ ἐμπεσοῦμαι ἐν χειρὶ τῶν ἀπεριτμήτων;
18 And he was very thirsty, and he called out to the Lord and said, “You have granted this great deliverance by the hand of your slave. And now, shall I die by thirst and fall in the hand of the uncircumcised?” 18 And he was very thirsty and wept to the Lord and said, “You have approved this great deliverance by the hand of your slave. And now, shall I die of thirst and fall in the hand of the uncircumcised?”

19 But God split a hollow place that was in the jaw, and water came out; and when he had drunk, his spirit came again, and he revived. That is why he called its name En-Hakkore, which is in Lehi to this day.

19 And God opened the wound of the jawbone, and waters came from it. And he drank, and his spirit returned in him, and he revived. Therefore its name was called Fountain-Invoked-by-Jawbone, as it remains to this day. 19 And God broke open the pit in the jawbone, and water came from it. And he drank, and his spirit returned, and he came to life. Therefore its name was called Fountain which is Invoked, which is in Jawbone to this day.

20 And he judged Israēl in the days of the Philistines twenty years.

20 And he judged Israēl in the days of the allophyles 20 years.” 20 And he judged Israēl in the days of the allophyles 20 years.”
