Chapter 16

AlexandrinusVaticanus

1 Then Samson went to Gaza, and saw there a protitute, and went in to her.

1 And Sampsōn went there to Gaza, and there he saw a woman, a prostitute, and went in to her. 1 And Sampson went to Gaza, and there he saw a prostitute, and went in to her.

2 And it was told the Gazites, saying, “Samson is come here.” And they surrounded him, and laid wait for him all night in the gate of the city, and were quiet all night, saying, “In the morning, when it is day, we shall kill him.”

2 And it was told to the Gazites, saying, “Sampsōn has come here.” And they circled around and lay in wait for him all night by the city gate. And they kept quiet all night, saying, “Let us wait until the light, when it is early, and let us kill him.” 2 And it was told to the Gazites, saying, “Sampsōn has come here.” And they circled around and lay in wait for him all night at the city gate. And they kept quiet all night, saying, “Until the dawn breaks, and let us murder him.”

3 And Samson lay until midnight, and arose at midnight, and took the doors of the gate of the city, and the two posts, and went away with them, bar and all, and put them on his shoulders, and carried them up to the top of a hill that is before Hebron.

4

3 And Sampsōn lay until midnight. And about midnight he rose up and took hold of the doors of the city gate and the two posts and pulled them up, bar and all, and put them on his shoulder and carried them to the top of the mountain that faces the front of Chebrōn and set them there. 3 And Sampsōn lay until midnight. And at the middle of the night he rose up and took hold of the doors of the city gate along with the two posts and pulled them up, bar and all, and put them on his shoulders and went up to the top of the mountain that faces the front of Chebrōn and set them there.

4 And it happened afterward, that he loved a woman in the valley of Sorek, whose name was Delilah.

4 And it came to be after this, that he loved a woman by the stream Sōrēch, and her name was Dalila. 4 And it came to be after this, that he loved a woman at Alsōrēch, and her name was Dalida.

5 And the lords of the Philistines came up to her, and said to her, “Entice him, and see in where his great strength lies, and by what means we may prevail against him, so that we may bind him to afflict him; and everyone of us will give you 1100 pieces of silver.”

5 And the satraps of the allophyles came up to her and said to her, “Deceive him, and see in what his great strength lies, and how we may prevail against him and bind him, so as to subdue him, and we will give you, each man, 1100 silver coins.” 5 And the leaders of the allophyles came up to her and said to her, “Deceive him, and see in what his great strength lies, and how we may prevail on him and bind him, so as to subdue him, and we will give you, each man, 1100 silver coins.”

6 And Delilah said to Samson, “Tell me, please, where your great strength lies, and how you might be bound to afflict you.”

6 And Dalila said to Sampsōn, “Tell me in what is your great strength and by what means you may be bound so that you could be subdued.” 6 And Dalida said to Sampsōn, “Please tell me in what is your great strength and by what means you may be bound so that you could be subdued.”

7 And Samson said to her, “If they bind me with seven smooth gut strands that were never dried, then shall I be weak, and be like any other man.”

7 And Sampsōn said to her, “If they bind me with seven fresh bowstrings that have not been left abandoned, I shall both become weak and be like one of men.” 7 And Sampsōn said to her, “If they bind me with seven fresh bowstrings that have not been spoiled, I shall both become weak and be like one of men.”

8 Then the lords of the Philistines brought up to her seven smooth gut strands which had not been dried, and she bound him with them.

8 And the satraps of the allophyles brought her seven fresh bowstrings that had not been left abandoned, and she bound him with them. 8 And the rulers of the allophyles brought her seven fresh bowstrings that had not been spoiled, and she bound him with them.

9 Now there were men lying in wait, staying with her in the chamber. And she said to him, “The Philistines are on you, Samson.” And he broke the gut strands, as a thread of cloth is broken when it touches the fire. So his strength wasn’t known.

9 And the ambush against him was sitting in the storeroom, and she said to him, “Allophyles are on you, Sampsōn!” And he broke the bowstrings, as a thread of the loose strand tears apart when it smells fire. And his strength source was not known. 9 And the ambush by her was sitting in the storeroom, and she said to him, “Allophyles are on you, Sampsōn!” And he tore apart the bowstrings, as one might tear apart a twist of flax when it smells the fire. And his strength source was not known.

10 And Delilah said to Samson, “Look, you have mocked me, and told me lies; now tell me, please, by what you might be bound.”

10 And Dalila said to Sampsōn, “Look please! you have deceived me and spoken a lie to me; now then tell me how you may be bound.” 10 And Dalida said to Sampsōn, “Look! you have misled me and spoken a lie to me; now then tell me how you may be bound.”

11 And he said to her, “If they bind me securely with new ropes that have never been used, then shall I be weak, and be like any other man.”

11 And he said to her, “If in binding, they bind me with seven new cords with which no work has been done, I shall both become weak and be like one of men.” 11 And he said to her, “If when they tie me up they bind me with seven new cords, with which by them no work has been done, I shall both become weak and be like one of men.”

12 Delilah therefore took new ropes, and bound him with it, and said to him, “The Philistines are on you, Samson.” And there were men in ambush staying in the chamber. And he broke them from off his arms like thread.

12 And Dalila took new cords for him and bound him with them, and said to him, “The allophyles are on you, Sampsōn!” (And the ambush was sitting in the storeroom.) And he tore apart the cords off his arms like a thread. 12 And Dalida took new cords and bound him with them, and the ambushes came out of the storeroom. And she said, “Allophyles are on you, Sampsōn!” And he snapped them off his arms like a thread.

13 And Delilah said to Samson, “So far, you have trifled with me, and told me lies; tell me with what you might be bound.” And he said to her, “If you weave the seven locks of my head with the web.”

13 And Dalila said to Sampsōn, “Until now you have deceived me and told lies to me; please tell me how you may be bound.” And he said to her, “If you weave the seven braids of my head with the warp and hammer them into the wall with the peg, I shall also become weak, like one of men.” 13 And Dalida said to Sampsōn, “Look! you have misled me and told me lies; please tell me how you may be bound.” And he said to her, “If you weave the seven braids of my head with the warp and hammer them into the wall with the peg, I shall also become like one of men, weak.”

14 And she fastened it with the peg, and said to him, “The Philistines are on you, Samson.” And he awoke out of his sleep, and he pulled up the peg of the beam, along with the web.

14 And Dalila put him to sleep, and she made the seven locks of his head the warp with the extension and hammered them into the wall with the pegs. And she said to him, “The allophyles are on you, Sampsōn!” But he awoke from his sleep and pulled out the pegs along with the web from the wall and the warp. And his strength source was not known. 14 And it came to be, when he went to sleep that Dalida took the seven braids of his head and wove them in the warp and attached them into the wall with the peg. And she said, “Allophyles are on you, Sampsōn!” And he awoke from his sleep and pulled out the peg of the warp from the wall.

15 And she said to him, “How can you say, ‘I love you,’ when your heart is not with me? You have trifled with me these three times, and haven’t told me in what your great strength lies.”

15 καὶ εἶπεν πρὸς αὐτὸν Δαλιλὰ Πῶς ἐρεῖς Ἠγάπηκά σε, καὶ καρδία σου οὐκ ἔστιν μετ’ ἐμοῦ;
15 And Dalila said to him, “How can you say, ‘I love you,’ and your heart is not with me? This is the third time you have deceived me and have not told me in what is your great strength.” 15 Then Dalida said to Sampsōn, “How can you say, ‘I love you,’ and your heart is not with me? This is the third time you have misled me and have not told me in what is your great strength.”

16 And it happened, when she pressed him daily with her words, and urged him, so that his soul was annoyed to death;

16 And it came to be, when she had overwhelmed him with her words for the entire night and had pestered him, that he was tired to death. 16 And it came to be, when she had pressed him down with her words all the days and had hemmed him in, that he was tired to death.

17 that he told her all his heart, and said to her, “No razor has ever come upon my head; for I have been a Nazarite to God from my mother’s womb. If I am shaved, then my strength will go from me, and I shall become weak, and be like any other man.”

17 And he told her everything from his heart and said to her, “A razor will not come on my head, because I have been a nazirite of God from my mother’s belly. And if I am shaved, my strength will leave me, and I will become weak and be as all men are.” 17 And he told her all his heart and said to her, “Iron has not come on my head, for I have been a holy one of God from my mother’s belly. If then I am shaved, my strength will leave me, and I will become weak and be like all men.”

18 And when Delilah saw that he had told her all his heart, she sent and called for the lords of the Philistines, saying, “Come up once more, for he has shown me all his heart.” Then the lords of the Philistines came up to her, and brought money in their hand.

18 And Dalila realized that he had told her everything from his heart. And she sent and called all the satraps of the allophyles, saying, “Come up this once, for he has told his whole heart to me.” And all the satrapies of the allophyles came up to her and brought the silver money in their hands. 18 And Dalida realized that he had told her all his heart. And she sent and called the leaders of the allophyles, saying, “Come up just this once more, for he has told his whole heart to me.” And the rulers of the allophyles came up to her and brought up the silver money in their hands.

19 And she made him sleep on her knees; and she called for a man, and she caused him to shave off the seven locks of his head; and she began to afflict him, and his strength went from him.

19 And she lulled him to sleep between her knees, and she called a barber, and he shaved off the seven locks of his head. And he began to weaken, and his strength withdrew from him. 19 And Dalida lulled Sampsōn to sleep on her knees, and she called a man, and he shaved off the seven braids of his head, and it began to weaken him, and his strength withdrew from him.

20 And she said, “The Philistines are on you, Samson.” And he awoke out of his sleep, and said, “I will go out as at other times before, and shake myself.” And he didn’t know that Yahweh had departed from him.

20 And Dalila said to him, “The allophyles are on you, Sampsōn!” and he awoke from his sleep and said, “I will go out and do as I have always done and shake myself free.” And he didn’t know that the Lord withdrew from him. 20 And Dalida said, “Allophyles are on you, Sampsōn!” and he awoke from his sleep and said, “I will go out as once and once and will be shaken free.” And he didn’t know that the Lord withdrew from on him.

21 But the Philistines took him, and put out his eyes, and brought him down to Gaza, and bound him with copper chains; and he pushed the grinder in the prison house.

21 And the allophyles seized him and gouged out his eyes. And they led him down to Gaza and bound him with copper-alloy shackles, and he was grinding grain in the prison-house. 21 And the allophyles overpowered him and cut out his eyes. And they brought him down to Gaza and shackled him with copper-alloy shackles, and he was grinding grain in the house of prison.

22 However the hair of his head began to grow again after he had been shaved.

22 And the hair of his head began to grow spring up after it had been shaved. 22 And hair on his head began to sprout just as he had shaved it.

23 Then the lords of the Philistines gathered together to offer a great sacrifice to Dagon their god, and to rejoice; for they said, “Our god has delivered Samson our enemy into our hand.”

23 And the satraps of the allophyles gathered to sacrifice a great sacrifice to their god Dagōn and to rejoice. And they said, “Our god has delivered Sampsōn our enemy in our hand.” 23 And the leaders of the allophyles gathered to sacrifice a great sacrifice to their god Dagōn and to rejoice. And they said, “The god has given Sampsōn our enemy in our hand.”

24 And when the people saw him, they praised their god; for they said, “Our god has delivered into our hands our enemy, the destroyer of our country, who killed many of us.”

24 And the people saw him and praised their gods. And they said, “Our god has delivered our enemy in our hand, yes, the ravager of our land, who multiplied our wounded.” 24 And the people saw him and sang hymns to their god, “Our god has given our enemy in our hand, the ravager of our land, and him who multiplied our wounded.”

25 And it happened, when their hearts were merry, that they said, “Call for Samson, that he may entertain us.” And they called for Samson out of the prison house; and he entertained them; and they set him between the pillars.

25 And when their heart was merry, then they said, “Call Sampsōn out of the prison-house, and let him perform before us.” So they called Sampsōn out of the prison-house, and he began to perform before them. And they were beating him. And they placed him between the columns, 25 And when their heart was merry, then they said, “Call Sampsōn from the prison-house, and let him perform before us.” So they called Sampsōn from the prison-house, and he began to perform before them. And they were beating him. And they placed him between the columns,

26 And Samson said to the lad who held him by the hand, “Allow me to feel the pillars on which the house stands, that I may lean on them.”

26 and Sampsōn said to the lad who held him by the hand, “Please let me rest, even rest and feel the pillars, those on which the house rests, and I will lean against them.” Now the boy did so. 26 and Sampsōn said to the young man who held his hand, “Let me go, and I will feel the columns, those on which the house stands, and lean against them.”

27 Now the house was full of men and women; and all the lords of the Philistines were there; and there were on the roof about 3000 men and women, who watched while Samson entertained.

27 Now the house was full of men and women, and all the satraps of the allophyles were there, and on top of the house there were about 3000 men and women, watching Sampsōn being made fun of. 27 And the house was full with the men and women, and all the leaders of the allophyles were there, and on top of the house there were about 700 men and women, those who were watching Sampsōn’s performances.

28 And Samson called to Yahweh, and said, “Oh Adonai Yahweh, remember me, please, and strengthen me, please, only this once, Oh God, may I at once take vengeance on the Philistines for my two eyes.”

28 And Sampsōn called out to the Lord and said, “Lord, Lord, remember me, and please strengthen me only this once more, and I will exact one act of revenge from the allophyles in exchange for my two eyes.” 28 And Sampsōn wept to the Lord and said, “Adōnaie, Lord, now please remember me, and strengthen me just this once more, O God, and I will carry out this one act of requital against the allophyles for my two eyes.”

29 And Samson took hold of the two middle pillars on which the house stood, and on which it was held up, one with his right hand, and the other with his left.

29 And Sampsōn embraced the two middle pillars, those on which the house rested, and he leaned against them, one in his right hand and one in his left hand. 29 And Sampsōn embraced the two columns of the house on which the house stood, and he leaned against them and grasped one with his right hand and one with his left hand.

30 And Samson said, “Let me die with the Philistines.” And he pushed with all his might; and the house fell upon the lords, and on all the people who were in it. So the dead whom he killed at his death were more than those whom he killed in his life.

30 And Sampsōn said, “Let my soul die with the allophyles.” And he leaned with strength, and the house fell on the satraps and on all the people who were in it. And the dead whom Sampsōn put to death at his death were more numerous, above those he had put to death during his life. 30 And Sampsōn said, “Let my soul die with the allophyles.” And he lifted with strength, and the house fell on the leaders and on all the people who were in it. And the dead whom Sampsōn put to death at his death were more than those he had put to death during his life.

31 Then his brothers and all the house of his father came down, and took him, and brought him up, and buried him between Zorah and Eshtaol in the burial place of Manoah his father. And he judged Israēl twenty years.

31 And his brothers and all his father’s house came down and took him and went up and buried him between Saraa and between Esthaol in the tomb of his father Manōe. And he judged Israēl twenty years. 31 And his brothers and his father’s house came down and took him and went up and buried him between Saraa and between Esthaol in the tomb of his father Manōe. And he himself judged Israēl twenty years.
