David King over All Israēl
1 Then came all the tribes of Israēl to David to Hebron, and spoke, saying, “Behold, we are your bone and your flesh.
1 And all the tribes of Israēl came to David at Chebrōn and said to him, “Look! we are your bone and your flesh, | 1 And all the tribes of Israēl came to David at Chebrōn and said to him, “Look! we are your bone and your flesh, |
2 Also in time past, when Saul was king over us, you were he who led out and brought in Israēl; and Yahweh said to you, ‘You shall feed my people Israēl, and you shall be a captain over Israēl.’ ”
2 and yesterday and the third, while Saoul was king over us, it was you who led out and brought in Israēl, and the Lord said to you: It is you who shall shepherd my people Israēl, and it is you who shall become a ruler over Israēl.” | 2 and yesterday and the third, while Saoul was king over us, it was you who led out and brought in Israēl, and the Lord said to you: It is you who shall shepherd my people Israēl, and it is you who shall become a ruler over Israēl.” |
3 So all the elders of Israēl came to the king to Hebron; and king David made a league with them in Hebron before Yahweh; and they anointed David king over Israēl.
3 And all the elders of Israēl came to the king at Chebrōn, and King David made a covenant with them at Chebrōn before the Lord, and they anointed David king over all Israēl. | 3 And all the elders of Israēl came to the king at Chebrōn, and King David made a covenant with them at Chebrōn before the Lord, and they anointed David king over all Israēl. |
4 David was 30 years old when he began to reign, and he reigned 40 years.
4 David was a son of 30 years when he began to reign, and he reigned 40 years, | 4 David was a son of 30 years when he began to reign, and he reigned 40 years, |
5 In Hebron he reigned over Judah seven years and six months; and in Jerusalem he reigned 33 years over all Israēl and Judah.
5 seven years and six months he reigned at Chebrōn over Jouda, and 33 years he reigned over all Israēl and Jouda at Jerousalēm. | 5 seven years and six months he reigned at Chebrōn over Jouda, and 33 years he reigned over all Israēl and Jouda at Jerousalēm. |
6 And the king and his men went to Jerusalem to the Jebusites, the inhabitants of the land: which spoke to David, saying, “Unless you take away the blind and the lame, you shall not come in here”; thinking, David cannot come in here.

6 And David departed, and his men, to Jerousalēm against the Jebousite who inhabited the land. And it was said to David, “You will not come in here,” for the blind and the lame resisted, saying, “David shall not come in here.” | 6 And David departed, and his men, to Jerousalēm against the Jebousite who inhabited the land. And it was said to David, “You will not come in here,” for the blind and the lame resisted, saying, “David shall not come in here.” |
7 Nevertheless David took the strong hold of Zion: the same is the city of David.
7 And David took the stronghold Siōn (this is the city of David). | 7 And David took the stronghold Siōn (this is the city of David). |
8 And David said on that day, “Whoever gets up to the gutter, and smites the Jebusites, and the lame and the blind, that are hated of David’s soul, he shall be chief and captain.” Therefore they said, “The blind and the lame shall not come into the house.”
8 And David said on that day, “Everyone who strikes down the Jebousite, let him attack with a dagger both the lame and the blind, and those who hate the soul of David”; therefore they shall say, “The blind and the lame shall not enter into the house of the Lord.” | 8 And David said on that day, “Everyone who strikes down the Jebousite, let him attack with a dagger both the lame and the blind, and those who hate the soul of David”; therefore they shall say, “The blind and the lame shall not enter into the house of the Lord.” |
9 So David dwelt in the fort, and called it the city of David. And David built all around from Millo and inward.
9 And David settled in the stronghold, and this was called the city of David, and he built the city all around from the citadel and his house. | 9 And David settled in the stronghold, and this was called the city of David, and he built the city all around from the citadel and his house. |
10 And David went on, and grew great, and Yahweh Elohim of armies was with him.
10 And while proceeding and enlarging, David kept going, and the Lord Almighty was with him. | 10 And while proceeding and enlarging, David kept going, and the Lord Almighty was with him. |
11 And Hiram king of Tyre sent messengers to David, and cedar trees, and carpenters, and masons; and they built David a house.
11 And King Chiram of Tyre sent messengers to David and cedar wood and carpenters of wood and masons of stones, and they built a house for David. | 11 And King Chiram of Tyre sent messengers to David and cedar wood and carpenters of wood and masons of stones, and they built a house for David. |
12 And David perceived that Yahweh had established him king over Israēl, and that he had exalted his kingdom for his people Israēl’s sake.
12 And David perceived that the Lord had prepared him to be king over Israēl and that his kingdom was exalted for the sake of his people Israēl. | 12 And David perceived that the Lord had prepared him to be king over Israēl and that his kingdom was exalted for the sake of his people Israēl. |
13 And David took him more concubines and wives out of Jerusalem, after he came from Hebron; and there were yet sons and daughters born to David.
13 And David took more wives and concubines out of Jerousalēm after he came from Chebrōn, and David had more sons and daughters. | 13 And David took more wives and concubines out of Jerousalēm after he came from Chebrōn, and David had more sons and daughters. |
14 And these be the names of those who were born to him in Jerusalem; Shammua, and Shobab, and Nathan, and Solomon,

War with the Allophyles
17 But when the Allophyles heard that they had anointed David king over Israēl, all the Allophyles came up to seek David; and David heard of it, and went down to the hold.
17 And allophyles heard that David had been anointed king over Israēl, and all the allophyles went up to seek David, and David heard and went down to the stronghold. | 17 And allophyles heard that David had been anointed king over Israēl, and all the allophyles went up to seek David, and David heard and went down to the stronghold. |
18 The Allophyles also came and spread themselves in the valley of Rephaim.
18 And the allophyles came and converged on the valley of the Titans. | 18 And the allophyles came and converged on the valley of the Titans. |
19 And David inquired of Yahweh, saying,“ Shall I go up to the Allophyles? will you deliver them into my hand?” And Yahweh said to David, “Go up; for I will doubtless deliver the Allophyles into your hand.”

19 And David inquired by the Lord, saying, “Shall I go up against the allophyles, and will you give them into my hands?” And the Lord said to David, “Go up, for while giving, I will give the allophyles into your hands.” | 19 And David inquired by the Lord, saying, “Shall I go up against the allophyles, and will you give them into my hands?” And the Lord said to David, “Go up, for while giving, I will give the allophyles into your hands.” |
20 And David came to Baal-perazim, and David smote them there, and said, “Yahweh has broken forth on my enemies before me, as the breach of waters.” Therefore he called the name of that place Baal-perazim.
20 And David came from the upper breaches and cut down the allophyles there, and David said, “The Lord has breached my enemies the allophyles before me, like water is breached”; therefore the name of that place was called the Upper Breaches. | 20 And David came from the upper breaches and cut down the allophyles there, and David said, “The Lord has breached my enemies the allophyles before me, like water is breached”; therefore the name of that place was called the Upper Breaches. |
21 And there they left their images, and David and his men burned them.
21 And they abandoned their gods there, and David and the men who were with him took them. | 21 And they abandoned their gods there, and David and the men who were with him took them. |
22 And the Allophyles came up yet again, and spread themselves in the valley of Rephaim.
22 And allophyles continued more to come up and assembled in the valley of the Titans. | 22 And allophyles continued more to come up and assembled in the valley of the Titans. |
23 And when David inquired of Yahweh, he said, “You shall not go up; but fetch a surround behind them, and come on them over against the mulberry trees.
23 And David inquired by the Lord, and the Lord said, “You shall not go up to meet them; return from them, and you shall meet them near the Weeping. | 23 And David inquired by the Lord, and the Lord said, “You shall not go up to meet them; return from them, and you shall meet them near the Weeping. |
24 And let it be, when you hear the sound of a going in the tops of the mulberry trees, that then you shall bestir yourself; for then shall Yahweh go out before you, to smite the army of the Allophyles.”
24 And it will be when you hear the sound of the confinement of the grove of the Weeping, then you shall go down to them, because then the Lord will go out before you, to strike down in the battle of the allophyles.” | 24 And it will be when you hear the sound of the confinement of the grove of the Weeping, then you shall go down to them, because then the Lord will go out before you, to strike down in the battle of the allophyles.” |
25 And David did so, as Yahweh had commanded him; and smote the Allophyles from Geba until you come to Gazer.
25 And David did just as the Lord had commanded him and struck down the allophyles from Gabaōn to the land of Gazēra. | 25 And David did just as the Lord had commanded him and struck down the allophyles from Gabaōn to the land of Gazēra. |
