Ziba, a False Servant

1And when David was a little past the top of the hill, behold, Ziba the servant of Mephibosheth met him, with a couple of donkeys saddled, and on them 200 loaves of bread, and 100 bunches of raisins, and 100 of summer fruits, and a bottle of wine.

1And David passed on a little way from Roōs; and, suddenly, Siba the servant of Memphibosthe came to meet him; and he had a pair of loaded donkeys, and on them 200 loaves, and 100 bunches of raisins, and 100 cakes of dates, and a container of wine. 1And David passed on a little way from Roōs; and, suddenly, Siba the servant of Memphibosthe came to meet him; and he had a pair of loaded donkeys, and on them 200 loaves, and 100 bunches of raisins, and 100 cakes of dates, and a container of wine.

2And the king said to Ziba, “What do you mean by these?” And Ziba said, “The donkeys are for the king’s household to ride on; and the bread and summer fruit for the young men to eat; and the wine, that such as be faint in the wilderness may drink.”

2καὶ εἶπεν βασιλεὺς πρὸς Σιβὰ Τί ταῦτά σοι;
2καὶ εἶπε βασιλεὺς πρὸς Σιβά· τί ταῦτά σοι;
2And the king said to Siba, “What are these things to you?” and Siba, said, “The donkeys are for the household of the king to sit upon, and the loaves and the dates are for the young men for food, and the wine to drink is for those who are exhausted in the wilderness.” 2And the king said to Siba, “What are these things to you?” and Siba, said, “The donkeys are for the household of the king to sit upon, and the loaves and the dates are for the young men for food, and the wine to drink is for those who are exhausted in the wilderness.”

3And the king said, “And where is your master’s son?” And Ziba said to the king, “Behold, he resides at Jerusalem; for he said, ‘Today shall the house of Israēl restore me the kingdom of my father.’ ”

3καὶ εἶπεν βασιλεύς Καὶ ποῦ υἱὸς τοῦ κυρίου σου;
3καὶ εἶπε βασιλεύς· καὶ ποῦ υἱὸς τοῦ κυρίου σου;
3And the king said, “And where is the son of your master?” And Siba said to the king, “Behold, he remains in Jerusalem; for he said, ‘To-day, the house of Israēl will restore the kingdom of my father to me.’ ” 3And the king said, “And where is the son of your master?” And Siba said to the king, “Behold, he remains in Jerusalem; for he said, ‘To-day, the house of Israēl will restore the kingdom of my father to me.’ ”

4Then said the king to Ziba, “Behold, yours are all that belonged to Mephibosheth”. And Ziba said, “I humbly beseech you that I may find grace in your sight, my lord, Oh king.”

4And the king said to Siba, “Listen, all that is Memphibosthe’s is yours.” And after doing obeisance, Siba said, “May I find grace in your eyes, my lord, oh king.” 4And the king said to Siba, “Listen, all that is Memphibosthe’s is yours.” And after doing obeisance, Siba said, “May I find grace in your eyes, my lord, oh king.”

David Is Cursed

5And when king David came to Bahurim, behold, from there came out a man of the family of the house of Saul, whose name was Shimei, the son of Gera: he came forth, and cursed continuously as he came.

5And king David came to Baurim; and, suddenly, a man came out from there. He was from the family of the house of Saul, and his name was Shimei the son of Gera. He came out cursing as he came out; 5And king David came to Baurim; and, suddenly, a man came out from there. He was from the family of the house of Saul, and his name was Shimei the son of Gera. He came out cursing as he came out;

6And he cast stones at David, and at all the servants of king David; and all the people and all the mighty men were on his right hand and on his left.

6while throwing stones at David and all the servants of king David. All the people and all the mighty men were on the right and left side of the king. 6while throwing stones at David and all the servants of king David. All the people and all the mighty men were on the right and left side of the king.

7And thus said Shimei when he cursed, “Come out, come out, you bloody man, and you man of Belial.

7And thus Shimei said when he cursed him, “Go away! Go away, you bloody man, you lawless man! 7And thus Shimei said when he cursed him, “Go away! Go away, you bloody man, you lawless man!

8Yahweh has returned on you all the blood of the house of Saul, in whose stead you have reigned; and Yahweh has delivered the kingdom into the hand of Absalom your son: and, behold, you are taken in your mischief, because you are a bloody man.”

8The Lord has returned on you all the blood of the house of Saul, because you have reigned in his stead; and the Lord has given the kingdom into the hand of Abessalōm your son. And, look, you are caught in your evil, because you are a bloody man.” 8The Lord has returned on you all the blood of the house of Saul, because you have reigned in his stead; and the Lord has given the kingdom into the hand of Abessalōm your son. And, look, you are caught in your evil, because you are a bloody man.”

9Then Abishai the son of Zeruiah said to the king, “Why should this dead dog curse my lord the king? Let me go over, please, and take off his head.”

9καὶ εἶπεν Ἀβεσσὰ υἱὸς Σαρουίας πρὸς τὸν βασιλέα Ἵνα τί καταρᾶται κύων τεθνηκὼς οὗτος τὸν κύριόν μου τὸν βασιλέα;
9καὶ εἶπε Ἀβεσσὰ υἱὸς Σαρουΐας πρὸς τὸν βασιλέα· ἱνατί καταρᾶται κύων τεθνηκὼς οὗτος τὸν κύριόν μου τὸν βασιλέα;
9And Abessa the son of Saruia said to the king, “Why does this dead dog keep cursing my lord the king? Please let me cross over now and remove his head.” 9And Abessa the son of Saruia said to the king, “Why does this dead dog keep cursing my lord the king? Please let me cross over now and remove his head.”

10And the king said, “What have I to do with you, you sons of Zeruiah? So let him curse, because Yahweh has said to him, Curse David. Who shall then say, Why have you done so?”

10καὶ εἶπεν βασιλεύς Τί ἐμοὶ καὶ ὑμῖν, υἱοὶ Σαρουίας;
ἄφετε αὐτὸν καὶ οὕτως καταράσθω, ὅτι κύριος εἶπεν αὐτῷ καταρᾶσθαι τὸν Δαυίδ, καὶ τίς ἐρεῖ Ὡς τί ἐποίησας οὕτως;
10καὶ εἶπε βασιλεύς· τί ἐμοὶ καὶ ὑμῖν, υἱοὶ Σαρουΐας;
ἄφετε αὐτὸν καὶ οὕτως καταράσθω, ὅτι Κύριος εἶπε αὐτῷ καταρᾶσθαι τὸν Δαυίδ, καὶ τίς ἐρεῖ, ὡς τί ἐποίησας οὕτως;
10And the king said, “What have I to do with you, sons of Saruia? Leave him alone, and so let him curse, because the Lord has told him to curse David; and who shall say, ‘Why have you done thus?’ ” 10And the king said, “What have I to do with you, sons of Saruia? Leave him alone, and so let him curse, because the Lord has told him to curse David; and who shall say, ‘Why have you done thus?’ ”

11And David said to Abishai, and to all his servants, “Behold, my son, who came forth of my bowels, seeks my life: how much more now may this Benjamite do it? Let him alone, and let him curse; for Yahweh has directed him.

11And David said to Abessa and to all his servants, “Listen, my son who came forth out of my body seeks my life; and still more, now the son of Benjamin. Let him curse, because the Lord has told him. 11And David said to Abessa and to all his servants, “Listen, my son who came forth out of my body seeks my life; and still more, now the son of Benjamin. Let him curse, because the Lord has told him.

12It may be that Yahweh will look on my affliction, and Yahweh will requite me good for his cursing this day.”

12If somehow the Lord may look on my affliction, thus he shall return good to me for his cursing this day.” 12If somehow the Lord may look on my affliction, thus he shall return good to me for his cursing this day.”

13And as David and his men went by the way, Shimei went along on the hill’s side over against him, and cursed as he went, and threw stones at him, and cast dust.

13And David and all the men with him went on the way; and Shimei went by the side of the hill next to him, cursing as he went, and throwing stones beside him, and sprinkling him with dirt. 13And David and all the men with him went on the way; and Shimei went by the side of the hill next to him, cursing as he went, and throwing stones beside him, and sprinkling him with dirt.

14And the king, and all the people who were with him, became weary, and refreshed themselves there.

14And the king, and all his exhausted people, came away and refreshed themselves there. 14And the king, and all his exhausted people, came away and refreshed themselves there.

Absalom Enters Jerusalem

15And Absalom, and all the people, the men of Israēl, came to Jerusalem, and Ahithophel with him.

15And Abessalom and all the men of Israēl entered Jerusalem, and Achitophel with him. 15And Abessalom and all the men of Israēl entered Jerusalem, and Achitophel with him.

16And it came to be, when Hushai the Archite, David’s friend, had come to Absalom, that Hushai said to Absalom, “God save the king, God save the king.”

16And it happened when Chusi the chief friend of David came to Abessalom, that Chusi said to Abessalom, “Let the king live.” 16And it happened when Chusi the chief friend of David came to Abessalom, that Chusi said to Abessalom, “Let the king live.”

17And Absalom said to Hushai, “Is this your kindness to your friend? Why didn’t you go with your friend?”

17καὶ εἶπεν Ἀβεσσαλὼμ πρὸς Χουσὶ Τοῦτο τὸ ἔλεός σου μετὰ τοῦ ἑταίρου σου;
ἵνα τί οὐκ ἀπῆλθες μετὰ τοῦ ἑταίρου σου;
17καὶ εἶπε Ἀβεσσαλὼμ πρὸς Χουσί· τοῦτο τὸ ἔλεός σου μετὰ τοῦ ἑταίρου σου;
ἱνατί οὐκ ἀπῆλθες μετὰ τοῦ ἑταίρου σου;
17And Abessalom said to Chusi, “Is this your kindness to your friend? Why didn’t you go with your friend?” 17And Abessalom said to Chusi, “Is this your kindness to your friend? Why didn’t you go with your friend?”

18And Hushai said to Absalom, “No; but whom Yahweh, and this people, and all the men of Israēl, choose, his will I be, and with him will I abide.

18And Chusi said to Abessalom, “No, but following whomever the Lord, and this people, and all Israēl have chosen, –his will I be, and with him I will dwell. 18And Chusi said to Abessalom, “No, but following whomever the Lord, and this people, and all Israēl have chosen, –his will I be, and with him I will dwell.

19And again, whom should I serve? should I not serve in the presence of his son? As I have served in your father’s presence, so will I be in your presence.”

19καὶ τὸ δεύτερον τίνι ἐγὼ δουλεύσω;
οὐχὶ ἐνώπιον τοῦ υἱοῦ αὐτοῦ;
19καὶ τὸ δεύτερον, τίνι ἐγὼ δουλεύσω;
οὐχὶ ἐνώπιον τοῦ υἱοῦ αὐτοῦ;
19And again, to whom shall I serve, except in the presence of his son? As I served in the presence of your father, so will I be in the presence of you. 19And again, to whom shall I serve, except in the presence of his son? As I served in the presence of your father, so will I be in the presence of you.”

20Then Absalom said to Ahithophel, “Give counsel among you what we shall do.”

20καὶ εἶπεν Ἀβεσσαλὼμ πρὸς Ἀχιτοφὲλ Φέρετε ἑαυτοῖς βουλὴν τί ποιήσωμεν. 20καὶ εἶπε Ἀβεσσαλὼμ πρὸς Ἀχιτόφελ · φέρετε ἑαυτοῖς βουλὴν τί ποιήσωμεν;
20And Abessalom said to Achitophel, “Bring among yourselves a counsel concerning what we should do.” 20And Abessalom said to Achitophel, “Bring among yourselves a counsel concerning what we should do.”

21And Ahithophel said to Absalom, “Go in to your father’s concubines, which he has left to keep the house; and all Israēl shall hear that you are abhorred of your father; then the hands of all who are with you will be strong.”

21And Achitophel said to Abessalom, “Enter sexually with your father’s concubines, whom he left to keep his house; and all Israēl shall hear that you have dishonoured your father; and the hands of all that are with you shall be strengthened.” 21And Achitophel said to Abessalom, “Enter sexually with your father’s concubines, whom he left to keep his house; and all Israēl shall hear that you have dishonoured your father; and the hands of all that are with you shall be strengthened.”

22So they spread a tent on the top of the house for Absalom; and Absalom went in to his father’s concubines in the sight of all Israēl.

22And they set up a tent for Abessalom on the roof, and Abessalom entered sexually with his father’s concubines in the sight of all Israēl. 22And they set up a tent for Abessalom on the roof, and Abessalom entered sexually with his father’s concubines in the sight of all Israēl.

23And the counsel of Ahithophel, which he counselled in those days, was as if a man had inquired at the oracle of God; so was all the counsel of Ahithophel both with David and with Absalom.

23And the counsel of Achitophel, which he counselled in former days, was as if one should inquire of the word of God; so was all the counsel of Achitophel both to David and also to Abessalom. 23And the counsel of Achitophel, which he counselled in former days, was as if one should inquire of the word of God; so was all the counsel of Achitophel both to David and also to Abessalom.
