Absalom’s Conspiracy
1 And it came to be after this, that Absalom prepared him chariots and horses, and 50 men to run before him.
1 And it happened after this that Abessalōm got himself chariots and horses and 50 men to run along before him. | 1 And it happened after this that Abessalōm got himself chariots and horses and 50 men to run along before him. |
2 And Absalom rose up early, and stood beside the way of the gate; and it was so, that when any man who had a controversy came to the king for judgment, then Absalom called to him, and said, “Of what city are you?” And he said, “Your servant is of one of the tribes of Israēl.”

2 And Abessalōm woke up at dawn and stood close by the road of the gate, and it happened: every man who had a judgment came to the king for judgment, and Abessalōm shouted out to him and would say to him, “From what city are you?” And the man said, “Your subject is from one of the tribes of Israēl.” | 2 And Abessalōm woke up at dawn and stood close by the road of the gate, and it happened: every man who had a judgment came to the king for judgment, and Abessalōm shouted out to him and would say to him, “From what city are you?” And the man said, “Your subject is from one of the tribes of Israēl.” |
3 And Absalom said to him, “See, your matters are good and right; but there is no man deputed of the king to hear you.”
3 And Abessalōm said to him, “Look! your claims are good and easy, and there is no one from the king to hear you.” | 3 And Abessalōm said to him, “Look! your claims are good and easy, and there is no one from the king to hear you.” |
4 Absalom said moreover, “Oh that I were made judge in the land, that every man which has any suit or cause might come to me, and I would do him justice!”
4 And Abessalōm said, “Who will appoint me a judge in the land so that every man who may have a dispute and a judgment will come to me, and I will give him justice?” | 4 And Abessalōm said, “Who will appoint me a judge in the land so that every man who may have a dispute and a judgment will come to me, and I will give him justice?” |
5 And it was so, that when any man came near to him to do him obeisance, he put forth his hand, and took him, and kissed him.
5 And it happened, when a man came near to do obeisance to him, that he would stretch out his hand and take hold of him, and he kissed him. | 5 And it happened, when a man came near to do obeisance to him, that he would stretch out his hand and take hold of him, and he kissed him. |
6 And on this manner did Absalom to all Israēl that came to the king for judgment; so Absalom stole the hearts of the men of Israēl.
6 And Abessalōm did according to this thing to all Israēl, to those who came to the king for judgment, and Abessalōm made the heart of the men of Israēl his own. | 6 And Abessalōm did according to this thing to all Israēl, to those who came to the king for judgment, and Abessalōm made the heart of the men of Israēl his own. |
7 And it came to be after 40 years, that Absalom said to the king, “please, let me go and pay my vow, which I have vowed to Yahweh, in Hebron.
7 And it happened at the end of forty years, that Abessalōm said to his father, “I will go please and pay my vows that I vowed to the Lord, in Chebrōn. | 7 And it happened at the end of forty years, that Abessalōm said to his father, “I will go please and pay my vows that I vowed to the Lord, in Chebrōn. |
8 For your servant vowed a vow while I abode at Geshur in Syria, saying, If Yahweh shall bring me again indeed to Jerusalem, then I will serve Yahweh.”
8 For your subject vowed a vow when I lived in Gedsour in Syria, saying, ‘If by returning the Lord should return me to Jerousalēm, then I will serve the Lord.’ ” | 8 For your subject vowed a vow when I lived in Gedsour in Syria, saying, ‘If by returning the Lord should return me to Jerousalēm, then I will serve the Lord.’ ” |
9 And the king said to him, “Go in peace.” So he arose, and went to Hebron.
9 And the king said to him, “Go in peace.” And getting up, he went to Chebrōn. | 9 And the king said to him, “Go in peace.” And getting up, he went to Chebrōn. |
10 But Absalom sent spies throughout all the tribes of Israēl, saying, “As soon as you hear the sound of the trumpet, then you shall say, Absalom reigns in Hebron.”
10 And Abessalōm sent spies among all the tribes of Israēl, saying, “When you hear the sound of the horn, then you will say, ‘Abessalōm has been crowned king in Chebrōn!’ ” | 10 And Abessalōm sent spies among all the tribes of Israēl, saying, “When you hear the sound of the horn, then you will say, ‘Abessalōm has been crowned king in Chebrōn!’ ” |
11 And with Absalom went 200 men out of Jerusalem, that were called; and they went in their simplicity, and they didn’t know anything.
11 And 200 men from Jerousalēm went with Abessalōm, invited and going in their sincerity, and they didn’t know anything. | 11 And 200 men from Jerousalēm went with Abessalōm, invited and going in their sincerity, and they didn’t know anything. |
12 And Absalom sent for Ahithophel the Gilonite, David’s counseller, from his city, even from Giloh, while he offered sacrifices. And the conspiracy was strong; for the people increased continually with Absalom.

12 And Abessalōm sent and called Achitophel the Gelmōnite, David’s advisor, from his city, from Gōla, when he was offering sacrifices. And the group became strong, and the people, going and in great number, were with Abessalōm. | 12 And Abessalōm sent and called Achitophel the Gelmōnite, David’s advisor, from his city, from Gōla, when he was offering sacrifices. David Flees Jerusalem
13 And there came a messenger to David, saying, “The hearts of the men of Israēl are after Absalom.”
13 And the messenger came to David, saying, “The heart of the men of Israēl has gone after Abessalōm.” | 13 And the messenger came to David, saying, “The heart of the men of Israēl has gone after Abessalōm.” |
14 And David said to all his servants that were with him at Jerusalem, “Arise, and let’s flee; for we shall not else escape from Absalom: make speed to depart, lest he overtake us suddenly, and bring evil on us, and smite the city with the edge of the sword.”
14 And David said to all his servants who were with him in Jerousalēm, “Get up, and let us flee, for there is no salvation for us from before Abessalōm. Hurry to go so that he might not hurry and overtake us and drive out evil things on us and strike the city with a dagger’s edge.” | 14 And David said to all his servants who were with him in Jerousalēm, “Get up, and let us flee, for there is no salvation for us from before Abessalōm. Hurry to go so that he might not hurry and overtake us and drive out evil things on us and strike the city with a dagger’s edge.” |
15 And the king’s servants said to the king, “Behold, your servants are ready to do whatever my lord the king shall appoint.”
15 And the servants of the king said to the king, “According to everything which our master the king chooses, look! we are your servants.” | 15 And the king’s servants said to the king, In all things which our lord the king chooses, behold we are your servants. |
16 And the king went forth, and all his household after him. And the king left ten women, which were concubines, to keep the house.
16 And the king went out, and all his house on their feet, and the king left ten women of his concubines to guard the house. | 16 And the king went out, and all his house on their feet, and the king left ten women of his concubines to guard the house. |
17 And the king went forth, and all the people after him, and tarried in a place that was far off.
17 And the king went out and all his servants on foot, and they stopped at the far off house. | 17 And the king went out and all his servants on foot, and they stopped at the far off house. |
18 And all his servants passed on beside him; and all the Cherethites, and all the Pelethites, and all the Gittites, 600 men who came after him from Gath, passed on before the king.
18 And all his servants were passing close to him, and every Chetti and every Feletthi, and they stood by the olive tree in the wilderness. And all the people were passing by near him, and all those about him and all the prominent men and all the warriors, 600 men, and they were passing by at his hand, and every Chereththi and every Feleththi and all the Geththite, 600 men, who came on their feet from Geth, going in front of the king. | 18 And all his servants were passing close to him, and every Chelethi and every Felethi, and they stood by the olive tree in the wilderness. And all the people were passing by near him, and all those about him and all the prominent men and all the warriors, 600 men, and they were passing by at his hand, and every Chelethi and every Felethi and all the Geththite, 600 men, who came on their feet from Geth, going in front of the king. |
19 Then said the king to Ittai the Gittite, “Why go you also with us? return to your place, and abide with the king; for you are a stranger, and also an exile.

21 And Ittai answered the king, and said, “As Yahweh lives, and as my lord the king lives, surely in what place my lord the king shall be, whether in death or life, even there also will your servant be.”

22 And David said to Ittai, “Go and pass over.” And Ittai the Gittite passed over, and all his men, and all the little ones that were with him.

24 And look! and indeed Sadōk and all the Levites were with him carrying the ark of the covenant of the Lord from Baithar, and they set down the ark of God, and Abiathar went up until all the people ceased to pass out of the city. | 24 And look! and indeed Sadōk and all the Levites were with him carrying the ark of the covenant of the Lord from Baithar, and they set down the ark of God, and Abiathar went up until all the people ceased to pass out of the city. |
25 And the king said to Zadok, “Carry back the ark of God into the city: if I shall find favour in the eyes of Yahweh, he will bring me again, and show me both it, and his habitation.
25 And the king said to Sadōk, “Return the ark of God into the city. If I find favour in the eyes of the Lord, then he will bring me back and show me it and its beauty. | 25 And the king said to Sadōk, “Return the ark of God into the city. If I find favour in the eyes of the Lord, then he will bring me back and show me it and its beauty. |
26 But if he thus say, ‘I have no delight in you’; behold, here am I, let him do to me as seems good to him.”
26 And if he says thus, ‘I have no want in you,’ look! here I am, let him do to me according to what is good in his eyes.” | 26 And if he says thus, ‘I have no want in you,’ look! here I am, let him do to me according to what is good in his eyes.” |
27 The king said also to Zadok the priest, “Are you not a seer? return into the city in peace, and your two sons with you, Ahimaaz your son, and Jonathan the son of Abiathar.
27 And the king said to Sadōk the priest, “Look, you are turning back to the city in peace, and Achimaas your son and Jōnathan the son of Abiathar, your two sons with you. | 27 And the king said to Sadōk the priest, “Look, you are turning back to the city in peace, and Achimaas your son and Jōnathan the son of Abiathar, your two sons with you. |
28 See, I will stay in the plain of the wilderness, until there come word from you to certify me.”
28 Look, I am here , I am a soldier in Arabōth of the wilderness until word comes from you to report to me.” | 28 Look, I am here , I am a soldier in Arabōth of the wilderness until word comes from you to report to me.” |
29 Zadok therefore and Abiathar carried the ark of God again to Jerusalem; and they tarried there.
29 And Sadōk and Abiathar returned the ark into Jerousalēm, and it sat there. | 29 And Sadōk and Abiathar returned the ark into Jerousalēm, and it sat there. |
30 And David went up by the ascent of mount Olivet, and wept as he went up, and had his head covered, and he went barefoot; and all the people that was with him covered every man his head, and they went up, weeping as they went up.
30 And David kept ascending by the ascent of the olive groves, ascending and weeping and his head covered, and he went barefoot, and all the people who were with him–a man covered his head, and they kept ascending, ascending and weeping. | 30 And David kept ascending by the ascent of the olive groves, ascending and weeping and his head covered, and he went barefoot, and all the people who were with him–a man covered his head, and they kept ascending, ascending and weeping. |
31 And one told David, saying, “Ahithophel is among the conspirators with Absalom.” And David said, “Oh Yahweh, please, turn the counsel of Ahithophel into foolishness.”
31 And it was told David, saying, “Even Achitophel is among the conspirators with Abessalōm.” And David said, “Please disperse the counsel of Achitophel, Oh my Lord God.” | 31 And it was told David, saying, “Even Achitophel is among the conspirators with Abessalōm.” And David said, “Please disperse the counsel of Achitophel, Oh my Lord God.” |
32 And it came to be, that when David came to the top of the mount, where he worshipped God, behold, Hushai the Archite came to meet him with his coat rent, and earth on his head.
32 And David was coming to the Rhoōs, there where he worshipped toward God, and look! there was Chousi the Archi, a friend of David, to meet with him, with his tunic torn and earth on his head. | 32 And David was coming to the Rhoōs, there where he worshipped toward God, and look! there was Chousi the Archi, a friend of David, to meet with him, with his tunic torn and earth on his head. |
33 Unto whom David said, “If you pass on with me, then you shall be a burden to me.
33 And David said to him, “If you cross over with me, then you will be as a burden on me. | 33 And David said to him, “If you cross over with me, then you will be as a burden on me. |
34 But if you return to the city, and say to Absalom, ‘I will be your servant, Oh king; as I have been your father’s servant hereto, so will I now also be your servant’; then may you for me defeat the counsel of Ahithophel.
34 And if you return to the city and will say to Abessalōm, ‘Your brothers have passed through, and your father the king has passed through behind me, and now I am your servant, Oh king, permit me to live; I was a servant of your father then and recently, and now I am your subject,’ then you will disperse for me the counsel of Achitophel. |
35 And you haven’t there with you Zadok and Abiathar the priests? therefore it shall be, that whatever thing you shall hear out of the king’s house, you shall tell it to Zadok and Abiathar the priests.
35 And look! Sadōk and Abiathar the priests are with you there, and it shall be that every word which you might hear from the king’s house, you shall also tell it to Sadōk and Abiathar the priests. | 35 And look! Sadōk and Abiathar the priests are with you there, and it shall be that every word which you might hear from the king’s house, you shall also tell it to Sadōk and Abiathar the priests. |
36 Behold, they have there with them their two sons, Ahimaaz Zadok’s son, and Jonathan Abiathar’s son; and by them you shall send to me everything that you can hear.”
36 Look! their two sons are there with them, Achimaas son of Sadōk and Jōnathan son of Abiathar, and by their hand you shall send to me every word which you might hear.” | 36 Look! their two sons are there with them, Achimaas son of Sadōk and Jōnathan son of Abiathar, and by their hand you shall send to me every word which you might hear.” |
37 So Hushai David’s friend came into the city, and Absalom came into Jerusalem.
37 And Chousi, the companion of David, entered into the city, and Abessalōm kept going into Jerousalēm. | 37 And Chousi, the companion of David, entered into the city, and Abessalōm kept going into Jerousalēm. |
