1 Now Jōab the son of Zeruiah perceived that the king’s heart was toward Absalom.

2 And Jōab sent to Tekoah, and fetched from there a wise woman, and said to her, “please, feign yourself to be a mourner, and put on now mourning apparel, and anoint not yourself with oil, but be as a woman that had a long time mourned for the dead.

5 And the king said to her, “What ails you?” And she answered, “I am indeed a widow woman, and my husband is dead.

7 And, behold, the whole family is risen against your handmaid, and they said, ‘Deliver him who smote his brother, that we may kill him, for the life of his brother whom he killed; and we will destroy the heir also’; and so they shall quench my coal which is left, and shall not leave to my husband neither name nor remainder on the earth.”

8 And the king said to the woman, “Go to your house, and I will give charge concerning you.”

9 And the woman of Tekoah said to the king, “My lord, Oh king, the iniquity be on me, and on my father’s house; and the king and his throne be guiltless.”

10 And the king said, “Whoever says anything to you, bring him to me, and he shall not touch you any more.”

11 Then said she, “please, let the king remember Yahweh your Elohim, that you would not suffer the revengers of blood to destroy any more, lest they destroy my son.” And he said, “As Yahweh lives, there shall not one hair of your son fall to the earth.”

11 καὶ εἶπεν Μνημονευσάτω δὴ ὁ βασιλεὺς τὸν κύριον θεὸν αὐτοῦ πληθυνθῆναι ἀγχιστέα τοῦ αἵματος τοῦ διαφθεῖραι καὶ οὐ μὴ ἐξάρωσιν τὸν υἱόν μου καὶ εἶπεν Ζῇ κύριος, εἰ πεσεῖται ἀπὸ τῆς τριχὸς τοῦ υἱοῦ σου ἐπὶ τὴν γῆν.	11 καὶ εἶπε· μνημονευσάτω δὴ ὁ βασιλεὺς τὸν Κύριον Θεὸν αὐτοῦ πληθυνθῆναι ἀγχιστέα τοῦ αἵματος τοῦ διαφθεῖραι καὶ οὐ μὴ ἐξάρωσι τὸν υἱόν μου· καὶ εἶπε· ζῇ Κύριος, εἰ πεσεῖται ἀπὸ τῆς τριχὸς τοῦ υἱοῦ σου ἐπὶ τὴν γῆν.

12 Then the woman said, “Let your handmaid, please, speak one word to my lord the king.” And he said, “Say on.”

13 And the woman said, “Why then have you thought such a thing against the people of God? For the king speaks this thing as one who is faulty, in that the king doesn’t fetch home again his banished.

13 καὶ εἶπεν ἡ γυνή Ἵνα τί ἐλογίσω τοιοῦτο ἐπὶ λαὸν θεοῦ; ἦ ἐκ στόματος τοῦ βασιλέως ὁ λόγος οὗτος ὡς πλημμέλεια τοῦ μὴ ἐπιστρέψαι τὸν βασιλέα τὸν ἐξωσμένον αὐτοῦ.	13 καὶ εἶπε ἡ γυνή· ἱνατί ἐλογίσω τοιοῦτο ἐπὶ λαὸν Θεοῦ; ἦ ἐκ στόματος τοῦ βασιλέως ὁ λόγος οὗτος ὡς πλημμέλεια τοῦ μὴ ἐπιστρέψαι τὸν βασιλέα τὸν ἐξωσμένον αὐτοῦ;
13 And the woman said, “Why did you calculate such a thing against God’s people? 14 For we must needs die, and are as water spilled on the ground, which cannot be gathered up again; neither does God respect any person: yet he devises means, that his banished isn’t expelled from him.

15 Now therefore that I am come to speak of this thing to my lord the king, it is because the people have made me afraid; and your handmaid said, I will now speak to the king; it may be that the king will perform the request of his handmaid.

17 Then your handmaid said, ‘The word of my lord the king shall now be comfortable; for as an angel of God, so is my lord the king to discern good and bad; therefore Yahweh your Elohim will be with you.’ ”

17 καὶ εἶπεν ἡ γυνή Εἴη δὴ ὁ λόγος τοῦ κυρίου μου τοῦ βασιλέως εἰς θυσίαν, ὅτι καθὼς ἄγγελος θεοῦ οὕτως ὁ κύριός μου ὁ βασιλεὺς τοῦ ἀκούειν τὸ ἀγαθὸν καὶ τὸ πονηρόν, καὶ κύριος ὁ θεός σου ἔσται μετὰ σοῦ.	17 καὶ εἶπε ἡ γυνή· εἴη δὴ ὁ λόγος τοῦ κυρίου μου τοῦ βασιλέως εἰς θυσίαν, ὅτι καθὼς ἄγγελος Θεοῦ, οὕτως ὁ κύριός μου ὁ βασιλεὺς τοῦ ἀκούειν τὸ ἀγαθὸν καὶ τὸ πονηρόν, καὶ Κύριος ὁ Θεός σου ἔσται μετὰ σοῦ.
17 And the woman said, “May the word of my master the king please be as an offering, for as an angel of God, so is my master the king, to hear the good and the evil, and your Lord God shall be with you!”	17 And the woman said, “May the word of my master the king please be as an offering, for as an angel of God, so is my master the king, to hear the good and the evil, and your Lord God shall be with you!”

18 Then the king answered and said to the woman, “Don’t hide from me, please, the thing that I shall ask you.” And the woman said, “Let my lord the king now speak.”

19 And the king said, “Is not the hand of Jōab with you in all this?” And the woman answered and said, “As your soul lives, my lord the king, none can turn to the right hand or to the left from anything that my lord the king has spoken; for your servant Jōab, he bade me, and he put all these words in the mouth of your handmaid.

19 καὶ εἶπεν ὁ βασιλεύς Μὴ ἡ χεὶρ Ἰωὰβ ἐν παντὶ τούτῳ μετὰ σοῦ; καὶ εἶπεν ἡ γυνὴ τῷ βασιλεῖ Ζῇ ἡ ψυχή σου, κύριέ μου βασιλεῦ, εἰ ἔστιν εἰς τὰ δεξιὰ ἢ εἰς τὰ ἀριστερὰ ἐκ πάντων, ὧν ἐλάλησεν ὁ κύριός μου ὁ βασιλεύς, ὅτι ὁ δοῦλός σου Ἰωὰβ αὐτὸς ἐνετείλατό μοι καὶ αὐτὸς ἔθετο ἐν τῷ στόματι τῆς δούλης σου πάντας τοὺς λόγους τούτους·	19 καὶ εἶπε ὁ βασιλεύς· μὴ ἡ χεὶρ Ἰωὰβ ἐν παντὶ τούτῳ μετὰ σοῦ; καὶ εἶπε ἡ γυνὴ τῷ βασιλεῖ· ζῇ ἡ ψυχή σου, κύριέ μου βασιλεῦ, εἰ ἐστιν εἰς τὰ δεξιὰ ἢ εἰς τὰ ἀριστερὰ ἐκ πάντων, ὧν ἐλάλησεν ὁ κύριός μου ὁ βασιλεύς, ὅτι ὁ δοῦλός σου Ἰωὰβ αὐτὸς ἐνετείλατό μοι, καὶ αὐτὸς ἔθετο ἐν τῷ στόματι τῆς δούλης σου πάντας τοὺς λόγους τούτους·
19 And the king said, “The hand of Jōab is in all this with you, isn't it?” And the woman said to the king, “Your soul lives, my master Oh king, if there is to the right or to the left from all things that my master the king said! 20 To fetch about this form of speech has your servant Jōab done this thing; and my lord is wise, according to the wisdom of an angel of God, to know all things that are in the earth.”

25 But in all Israēl there was none to be so much praised as Absalom for his beauty: from the sole of his foot even to the crown of his head there was no blemish in him.

32 And Abessalōm said to Jōab, “Look! I sent to you, saying: Come here, and I will send you to the king, saying, ‘Why did I come from Gedsour? It would have been good for me to be there still.
