Chapter 14

AlexandrinusVaticanus

The Woman of Tekoa

1 Now Jōab the son of Zeruiah perceived that the king’s heart was toward Absalom.

1 And Jōab son of Sarouia knew that the heart of the king was on Abessalōm. 1 And Jōab son of Sarouia knew that the heart of the king was on Abessalōm.

2 And Jōab sent to Tekoah, and fetched from there a wise woman, and said to her, “please, feign yourself to be a mourner, and put on now mourning apparel, and anoint not yourself with oil, but be as a woman that had a long time mourned for the dead.

2 And Jōab sent to Thekōe and took from there a wise woman and said to her, “Please mourn, and put on mourning garments, and don't anoint yourself with oil, and you shall be as a woman mourning over one who has been dead here many days, 2 And Jōab sent to Thekōe and took from there a wise woman and said to her, “Please mourn, and put on mourning garments, and don't anoint yourself with oil, and you shall be as a woman mourning over one who has been dead here many days,

3 And come to the king, and speak on this manner to him.” So Jōab put the words in her mouth.

3 and you shall go to the king and speak to him according to this matter.” And Jōab put the words into her mouth. 3 and you shall go to the king and speak to him according to this matter.” And Jōab put the words into her mouth.

4 And when the woman of Tekoah spoke to the king, she fell on her face to the ground, and did obeisance, and said, “Help, Oh king.”

4 And the Thekōite woman went in to the king, and she fell on her face to the ground and did obeisance to him and said, “Save, Oh king, save!” 4 And the Thekōite woman went in to the king, and she fell on her face to the ground and did obeisance to him and said, “Save, Oh king, save!”

5 And the king said to her, “What ails you?” And she answered, “I am indeed a widow woman, and my husband is dead.

5 καὶ εἶπεν πρὸς αὐτὴν βασιλεύς Τί ἐστίν σοι;
5 καὶ εἶπε πρὸς αὐτὴν βασιλεύς· τί ἐστί σοι;
5 And the king said to her, “What is it with you?” And she said, “And certainly I am a widow woman, and my husband has died. 5 And the king said to her, “What is it with you?” And she said, “And certainly I am a widow woman, and my husband has died.

6 And your handmaid had two sons, and they two quarreled together in the field, and there was none to part them, but the one smote the other, and killed him.

6 And indeed your subject had two sons, and they both quarreled in the field, and there was no one to part them, and the one struck his brother and put him to death. 6 And indeed your subject had two sons, and they both quarreled in the field, and there was no one to part them, and the one struck his brother and put him to death.

7 And, behold, the whole family is risen against your handmaid, and they said, ‘Deliver him who smote his brother, that we may kill him, for the life of his brother whom he killed; and we will destroy the heir also’; and so they shall quench my coal which is left, and shall not leave to my husband neither name nor remainder on the earth.”

7 And look! the whole paternal family rose up against your subject, and they said, ‘Give up the one who struck his brother, and we will put him to death for the life of his brother whom he killed, and we will remove indeed your heir.’ And they will extinguish my ember that is left, so as not to establish for my husband remnant and name on the surface of the earth.” 7 And look! the whole paternal family rose up against your subject, and they said, ‘Give up the one who struck his brother, and we will put him to death for the life of his brother whom he killed, and we will remove indeed your heir.’ And they will extinguish my ember that is left, so as not to establish for my husband remnant and name on the surface of the earth.”

8 And the king said to the woman, “Go to your house, and I will give charge concerning you.”

8 And the king said, “Proceed to your house in good health, and I will give command concerning you.” 8 And the king said, “Proceed to your house in good health, and I will give command concerning you.”

9 And the woman of Tekoah said to the king, “My lord, Oh king, the iniquity be on me, and on my father’s house; and the king and his throne be guiltless.”

9 And the Thekōite woman said to the king, “On me, my master Oh king, be the lawlessness, and on the house of my father, and the king and his throne be guiltless.” 9 And the Thekōite woman said to the king, “On me, my master Oh king, be the lawlessness, and on the house of my father, and the king and his throne be guiltless.”

10 And the king said, “Whoever says anything to you, bring him to me, and he shall not touch you any more.”

10 καὶ εἶπεν βασιλεύς Τίς λαλῶν πρὸς σέ καὶ ἄξεις αὐτὸν πρὸς ἐμέ, καὶ οὐ προσθήσει ἔτι ἅψασθαι αὐτοῦ. 10 καὶ εἶπε βασιλεύς· τίς λαλῶν πρός σε;
10 And the king said, “Who was speaking to you? You shall also bring him to me, and he shall not any longer touch him.” 10 And the king said, “Who was speaking to you? You shall also bring him to me, and he shall not any longer touch him.”

11 Then said she, “please, let the king remember Yahweh your Elohim, that you would not suffer the revengers of blood to destroy any more, lest they destroy my son.” And he said, “As Yahweh lives, there shall not one hair of your son fall to the earth.”

11 And she said, “Please let the king keep in mind his Lord God, that a next of kin of blood succeed in destroying him, and they shall not remove my son.” And he said, “The Lord lives, not a hair of your son shall fall on the ground!” 11 And she said, “Please let the king keep in mind his Lord God, that a next of kin of blood succeed in destroying him, and they shall not remove my son.” And he said, “The Lord lives, not a hair of your son shall fall on the ground!”

12 Then the woman said, “Let your handmaid, please, speak one word to my lord the king.” And he said, “Say on.”

12 And the woman said, “Please let your subject speak a word to my master the king.” And he said, “Speak.” 12 And the woman said, “Please let your subject speak a word to my master the king.” And he said, “Speak.”

13 And the woman said, “Why then have you thought such a thing against the people of God? For the king speaks this thing as one who is faulty, in that the king doesn’t fetch home again his banished.

13 καὶ εἶπεν γυνή Ἵνα τί ἐλογίσω τοιοῦτο ἐπὶ λαὸν θεοῦ;
13 καὶ εἶπε γυνή· ἱνατί ἐλογίσω τοιοῦτο ἐπὶ λαὸν Θεοῦ;
ἐκ στόματος τοῦ βασιλέως λόγος οὗτος ὡς πλημμέλεια τοῦ μὴ ἐπιστρέψαι τὸν βασιλέα τὸν ἐξωσμένον αὐτοῦ;
13 And the woman said, “Why did you calculate such a thing against God’s people? Is this word out of the king’s mouth an error, inasmuch as the king didn’t bring back his own banished one? 13 And the woman said, “Why did you calculate such a thing against God’s people? Is this word out of the king’s mouth an error, inasmuch as the king didn’t bring back his own banished one?

14 For we must needs die, and are as water spilled on the ground, which cannot be gathered up again; neither does God respect any person: yet he devises means, that his banished isn’t expelled from him.

14 For by death we shall die and be as water that is spilled on the ground, which shall not be gathered up. And God shall take a life, even as he calculates to banish a banished one from him. 14 For by death we shall die and be as water that is spilled on the ground, which shall not be gathered up. And God shall take a life, even as he calculates to banish a banished one from him.

15 Now therefore that I am come to speak of this thing to my lord the king, it is because the people have made me afraid; and your handmaid said, I will now speak to the king; it may be that the king will perform the request of his handmaid.

15 And now, what I came to say to the king, my master, is this word, because the people will see me, and your subject will say, ‘Please let one speak to the king, if somehow the king will do the word of his subject; 15 And now, what I came to say to the king, my master, is this word, because the people will see me, and your subject will say, ‘Please let one speak to the king, if somehow the king will do the word of his subject;

16 For the king will hear, to deliver his handmaid out of the hand of the man who would destroy me and my son together out of the inheritance of God.

16 for the king will hear, and so to deliver his subject from the hand of the man who seeks to remove me and my son from God’s inheritance.’ ” 16 for the king will hear, and so to deliver his subject from the hand of the man who seeks to remove me and my son from God’s inheritance.’ ”

17 Then your handmaid said, ‘The word of my lord the king shall now be comfortable; for as an angel of God, so is my lord the king to discern good and bad; therefore Yahweh your Elohim will be with you.’ ”

17 And the woman said, “May the word of my master the king please be as an offering, for as an angel of God, so is my master the king, to hear the good and the evil, and your Lord God shall be with you!” 17 And the woman said, “May the word of my master the king please be as an offering, for as an angel of God, so is my master the king, to hear the good and the evil, and your Lord God shall be with you!”

18 Then the king answered and said to the woman, “Don’t hide from me, please, the thing that I shall ask you.” And the woman said, “Let my lord the king now speak.”

18 And the king answered and said to the woman, “Please don’t hide from me a thing that I ask you.” And the woman said, “Please let my master the king speak.” 18 And the king answered and said to the woman, “Please don’t hide from me a thing that I ask you.” And the woman said, “Please let my master the king speak.”

19 And the king said, “Is not the hand of Jōab with you in all this?” And the woman answered and said, “As your soul lives, my lord the king, none can turn to the right hand or to the left from anything that my lord the king has spoken; for your servant Jōab, he bade me, and he put all these words in the mouth of your handmaid.

19 καὶ εἶπεν βασιλεύς Μὴ χεὶρ Ἰωὰβ ἐν παντὶ τούτῳ μετὰ σοῦ;
19 καὶ εἶπε βασιλεύς· μὴ χεὶρ Ἰωὰβ ἐν παντὶ τούτῳ μετὰ σοῦ;
19 And the king said, “The hand of Jōab is in all this with you, isn't it?” And the woman said to the king, “Your soul lives, my master Oh king, if there is to the right or to the left from all things that my master the king said! For your subject Jōab himself commanded me, and he himself put all these words in the mouth of your subject.

20 To fetch about this form of speech has your servant Jōab done this thing; and my lord is wise, according to the wisdom of an angel of God, to know all things that are in the earth.”

20 In order to get around the appearance of this thing, your subject Jōab made up this tale. And my master is wise like the wisdom of an angel of God, to know all things that are in the earth.” 20 In order to get around the appearance of this thing, your subject Jōab made up this tale. And my master is wise like the wisdom of an angel of God, to know all things that are in the earth.”

Absalom Is Recalled

21 And the king said to Jōab, “Behold now, I have done this thing: go therefore, bring the young man Absalom again.”

21 And the king said to Jōab, “Look! please, I did for you according to this your word; go, bring back the youth Abessalōm.” 21 And the king said to Jōab, “Look! please, I did for you according to this your word; go, bring back the youth Abessalōm.”

22 And Jōab fell to the ground on his face, and bowed himself, and thanked the king; and Jōab said, “To day your servant knows that I have found grace in your sight, my lord, Oh king, in that the king has fulfilled the request of his servant.”

22 And Jōab fell on his face on the ground and did obeisance and blessed the king, and Jōab said, “Today your subject realized that I found favour in your sight, my master Oh king, for my master the king did the word of his subject.” 22 And Jōab fell on his face on the ground and did obeisance and blessed the king, and Jōab said, “Today your subject realized that I found favour in your sight, my master Oh king, for my master the king did the word of his subject.”

23 So Jōab arose and went to Geshur, and brought Absalom to Jerusalem.

23 And Jōab arose and went to Gedsour and brought Abessalōm to Jerousalēm. 23 And Jōab arose and went to Gedsour and brought Abessalōm to Jerousalēm.

24 And the king said, “Let him turn to his own house, and let him not see my face.” So Absalom returned to his own house, and saw not the king’s face.

24 And the king said, “Let him return to his house and not see my face.” And Abessalōm returned to his house and didn’t see the face of the king. 24 And the king said, “Let him return to his house and not see my face.” And Abessalōm returned to his house and didn’t see the face of the king.

25 But in all Israēl there was none to be so much praised as Absalom for his beauty: from the sole of his foot even to the crown of his head there was no blemish in him.

25 And in all Israēl there was no man so very praiseworthy as Abessalōm; from the sole of his foot even to the top of his head there was no blemish in him. 25 And in all Israēl there was no man so very praiseworthy as Abessalōm; from the sole of his foot even to the top of his head there was no blemish in him.

26 And when he polled his head, (for it was at every year’s end that he polled it: because the hair was heavy on him, therefore he polled it:) he weighed the hair of his head at 200 shekels after the king’s weight.

26 And when he cut the hair of his head (and it happened from a beginning of days to days, when he would cut it , that it weighed down on him), and after he cut it, he weighed the hair of his head: 200 shekels by the royal shekel. 26 And when he cut the hair of his head (and it happened from a beginning of days to days, when he would cut it , that it weighed down on him), and after he cut it, he weighed the hair of his head: 200 shekels by the royal shekel.

27 And to Absalom there were born three sons, and one daughter, whose name was Tamar: she was a woman of a fair countenance.

27 And there were born to Abessalōm three sons and one daughter, and her name was Thēmar; she was a very beautiful woman, and she became wife to Rhoboam son of Salōmōn, and she bore him Abia. 27 And there were born to Abessalōm three sons and one daughter, and her name was Thēmar; she was a very beautiful woman, and she became wife to Rhoboam son of Salōmōn, and she bore him Abia.

28 So Absalom dwelt two full years in Jerusalem, and saw not the king’s face.

28 And Abessalōm lived in Jerousalēm two years of days and didn’t see the face of the king. 28 And Abessalōm lived in Jerousalēm two years of days and didn’t see the face of the king.

29 Therefore Absalom sent for Jōab, to have sent him to the king; but he would not come to him; and when he sent again the second time, he would not come.

29 And Abessalōm sent to Jōab to send him to the king, but he didn’t want to come to him. And he sent a second time to him, but he didn’t want to come. 29 And Abessalōm sent to Jōab to send him to the king, but he didn’t want to come to him. And he sent a second time to him, but he didn’t want to come.

30 Therefore he said to his servants, “See, Jōab’s field is near mine, and he has barley there; go and set it on fire.” And Absalom’s servants set the field on fire.

30 And Abessalōm said to his servants, “Look, the portion in Jōab’s field is next to mine, and he has barley there; go, and burn it with fire.” And the servants of Abessalōm set them on fire. And the subjects of Jōab came to him with their clothes torn and said, “The subjects of Abessalōm burned your portion with fire.” 30 And Abessalōm said to his servants, “Look, the portion in Jōab’s field is next to mine, and he has barley there; go, and burn it with fire.” And the servants of Abessalōm set them on fire. And the subjects of Jōab came to him with their clothes torn and said, “The subjects of Abessalōm burned your portion with fire.”

31 Then Jōab arose, and came to Absalom to his house, and said to him, “Why have your servants set my field on fire?”

31 καὶ ἀνέστη Ἰωὰβ καὶ ἦλθεν πρὸς Ἀβεσσαλὼμ εἰς τὸν οἶκον καὶ εἶπεν πρὸς αὐτόν Ἵνα τί οἱ παῖδές σου ἐνεπύρισαν τὴν μερίδα τὴν ἐμὴν ἐν πυρί; 31 καὶ ἀνέστη Ἰωὰβ καὶ ἦλθε πρὸς Ἀβεσσαλὼμ εἰς τὸν οἶκον καὶ εἶπε πρὸς αὐτόν· ἱνατί ἐνεπύρισαν οἱ παῖδές σου τὴν μερίδα τὴν ἐμὴν ἐν πυρί;
31 And Jōab set off and came to Abessalōm into his house and said to him, “Why did your servants burn my portion with fire?” 31 And Jōab set off and came to Abessalōm into his house and said to him, “Why did your servants burn my portion with fire?”

32 And Absalom answered Jōab, “Behold, I sent to you, saying, ‘Come here, that I may send you to the king, to say, “Why am I come from Geshur?”’ it had been good for me to have been there still: now therefore let me see the king’s face; and if there is any iniquity in me, let him kill me.”

32 καὶ εἶπεν Ἀβεσσαλὼμ πρὸς Ἰωὰβ Ἰδοὺ ἀπέστειλα πρὸς σὲ λέγων Ἧκε ὧδε καὶ ἀποστελῶ σὲ πρὸς τὸν βασιλέα λέγων Ἵνα τί ἦλθον ἐκ Γεδσούρ;
32 καὶ εἶπε Ἀβεσσαλὼμ πρὸς Ἰωάβ· ἰδοὺ ἀπέστειλα πρός σε λέγων· ἧκε ὧδε, καὶ ἀποστελῶ σε πρὸς τὸν βασιλέα λέγων· ἱνατί ἦλθον ἐκ Γεδσούρ;
32 And Abessalōm said to Jōab, “Look! I sent to you, saying: Come here, and I will send you to the king, saying, ‘Why did I come from Gedsour? It would have been good for me to be there still. And now, look! I have not seen the face of the king, but if there is injustice in me, then put me to death!’ ” 32 And Abessalōm said to Jōab, “Look! I sent to you, saying: Come here, and I will send you to the king, saying, ‘Why did I come from Gedsour? It would have been good for me to be there still. And now, look! I have not seen the face of the king, but if there is injustice in me, then put me to death!’ ”

33 So Jōab came to the king, and told him; and when he had called for Absalom, he came to the king, and bowed himself on his face to the ground before the king; and the king kissed Absalom.

33 And Jōab went in to the king and reported to him, and he summoned Abessalōm. And he went in to the king and did obeisance to him and fell on his face on the ground in front of the king, and the king kissed Abessalōm. 33 And Jōab went in to the king and reported to him, and he summoned Abessalōm. And he went in to the king and did obeisance to him and fell on his face on the ground in front of the king, and the king kissed Abessalōm.
