Amnon and Tamar
1 And it came to be after this, that Absalom the son of David had a fair sister, whose name was Tamar; and Amnon the son of David loved her.

2 And Amnon was so vexed, that he fell sick for his sister Tamar; for she was a virgin; and Amnon thought it hard for him to do anything to her.
2 And Amnōn was tormented so as to be ill because of Thēmar his sister, for she was a virgin, and it was important in Amnōn’s sight to do anything to her. | 2 And Amnōn was tormented so as to be ill because of Thēmar his sister, for she was a virgin, and it was important in Amnōn’s sight to do anything to her. |
3 But Amnon had a friend, whose name was Jonadab, the son of Shimeah David’s brother; and Jonadab was a very subtle man.
3 And Amnōn had a companion, and his name was Jōnadab son of Samaa the brother of David, and Jōnadab was a very crafty man. | 3 And Amnōn had a companion, and his name was Jōnadab son of Samaa the brother of David, and Jōnadab was a very crafty man. |
4 And he said to him, “Why are you, being the king’s son, lean from day today? will you not tell me?” And Amnon said to him, “I love Tamar, my brother Absalom’s sister.”

4 And he said to him, “What’s with you that you are so miserable, Oh son of the king, morning by morning? Will you not tell me?” And Amnōn said to him, “I love Thēmar, the sister of Abessalōm my brother.” | 4 And he said to him, “What’s with you that you are so miserable, Oh son of the king, morning by morning? Will you not tell me?” And Amnōn said to him, “I love Thēmar, the sister of Abessalōm my brother.” |
5 And Jonadab said to him, “Lay you down on your bed, and make yourself sick; and when your father comes to see you, say to him, please, let my sister Tamar come, and give me food, and dress the food in my sight, that I may see it, and eat it at her hand.”
5 And Jōnadab said to him, “Lie down on your bed and be sick, and your father will come in to see you, and you shall say to him, ‘Please let Thēmar my sister come and feed me some morsels, and let her prepare food in my sight so that I may see and eat from her hands.’ ” | 5 And Jōnadab said to him, “Lie down on your bed and be sick, and your father will come in to see you, and you shall say to him, ‘Please let Thēmar my sister come and feed me some morsels, and let her prepare food in my sight so that I may see and eat from her hands.’ ” |
6 So Amnon lay down, and made himself sick; and when the king came to see him, Amnon said to the king, “please, let Tamar my sister come, and make me a couple of cakes in my sight, that I may eat at her hand.”
6 And Amnōn lay down and became ill, and the king came in to see him, and Amnōn said to the king, “Please let Thēmar my sister come to me and roll two rolls in my sight, and I will eat from her hand.” | 6 And Amnōn lay down and became ill, and the king came in to see him, and Amnōn said to the king, “Please let Thēmar my sister come to me and roll two rolls in my sight, and I will eat from her hand.” |
7 Then David sent home to Tamar, saying, “Go now to your brother Amnon’s house, and dress him food.”
7 And David sent to Thēmar, to the house, saying, “Please go to the house of Amnōn your brother, and make food for him.” | 7 And David sent to Thēmar, to the house, saying, “Please go to the house of Amnōn your brother, and make food for him.” |
8 So Tamar went to her brother Amnon’s house; and he was laid down. And she took flour, and kneaded it, and made cakes in his sight, and baked the cakes.

10 And Amnōn said to Thēmar, “Bring the food into the bedroom, and I will eat out of your hand.” And Thēmar took the rolls that she had prepared and brought them to Amnōn her brother, into the bedroom. | 10 And Amnōn said to Thēmar, “Bring the food into the bedroom, and I will eat out of your hand.” And Thēmar took the rolls that she had prepared and brought them to Amnōn her brother, into the bedroom. |
11 And when she had brought them to him to eat, he took hold of her, and said to her, “Come lie with me, my sister.”
11 And she brought them to him to eat, and he grabbed her and said to her “Come, lie with me, my sister!” | 11 And she brought them to him to eat, and he grabbed her and said to her “Come, lie with me, my sister!” |
12 And she answered him, “No, my brother, don’t force me; for no such thing anything to be done in Israēl: don’t you this folly.

13 And I, to which shall I cause my shame to go? And as for you, you shall be as one of the fools in Israēl. Now therefore, please, speak to the king; for he won’t withhold me from you.”

14 However he would not listen to her voice: but, being stronger than she, forced her, and lay with her.

15 Then Amnon hated her exceedingly; so that the hatred with which he hated her was greater than the love with which he had loved her. And Amnon said to her, “Arise, be gone.”

16 And Thēmar said to him, “No, brother, for greater is the last wrong than the first which you did with me, to send me away.” But Amnōn didn’t want to listen to her voice. | 16 And Thēmar said to him, “No, brother, for greater is the last wrong than the first which you did with me, to send me away.” But Amnōn didn’t want to listen to her voice. |
17 Then he called his servant that ministered to him, and said, “Put now this woman out from me, and bolt the door after her.”
17 And he called his young servant who was in charge of his house, and he said to him, “Please send this woman away from me, outside, and lock the door after her.” | 17 And he called his young servant who was in charge of his house, and he said to him, “Please send this woman away from me, outside, and lock the door after her.” |
18 And she had a garment of various colours on her; for with such robes were the king’s daughters that were virgins dressed. Then his servant brought her out, and bolted the door after her.
18 And on her was a tunic to the wrists, for so the daughters of the king who were virgins were dressed in their outer garments. 19 And Tamar put ashes on her head, and rent her garment of various colours that was on her, and laid her hand on her head, and went on crying.
19 And Thēmar took ashes and put them on her head and tore the tunic to the wrists that was on her, and she put her hands on her head and while walking and crying aloud, she walked away. | 19 And Thēmar took ashes and put them on her head and tore the tunic to the wrists that was on her, and she put her hands on her head and while walking and crying aloud, she walked away. |
20 And Absalom her brother said to her, “Has Amnon your brother been with you? but hold now your peace, my sister: he is your brother; don’t regard this thing.” So Tamar remained desolate in her brother Absalom’s house.

20 And Abessalōm her brother said to her, “Amnōn your brother wasn’t with you, was he? 21 But when king David heard of all these things, he was very wroth.

22 And Absalom spoke to his brother Amnon neither good nor bad; for Absalom hated Amnon, because he had forced his sister Tamar.
22 And Abessalōm didn’t speak with Amnōn, from evil to good, for Abessalōm kept hating Amnōn on account of which he had humbled Thēmar his sister. | 22 And Abessalōm didn’t speak with Amnōn, from evil to good, for Abessalōm kept hating Amnōn on account of which he had humbled Thēmar his sister. |
23 And it came to be after two full years, that Absalom had sheepshearers in Baal-hazor, which is beside Ephraim; and Absalom invited all the king’s sons.

24 And Absalom came to the king, and said, “Behold now, your servant has sheepshearers; let the king, I beseech you, and his servants go with your servant.”

25 And the king said to Absalom, “No, my son, let us not all now go, lest we be chargeable to you.” And he pressed him: however he would not go, but blessed him.

28 And Abessalōm commanded his young men, saying, “Watch, when the heart of Amnōn is made good with wine, and I say to you, ‘Strike Amnōn, and put him to death.’ Don’t be afraid, for I am–I am commanding you, am I not? 29 And the young men of Abessalōm did to Amnōn just as Abessalōm had commanded them. And all the sons of the king rose, and they sat, a man on his mule, and fled. | 29 And the young men of Abessalōm did to Amnōn just as Abessalōm had commanded them. And all the sons of the king rose, and they sat, a man on his mule, and fled. |
30 And it came to be, while they were in the way, that tidings came to David, saying, “Absalom has slain all the king’s sons, and there is not one of them left.”
30 And it happened, while they were on the way, that the report came to David, saying, “Abessalōm struck all the sons of the king, and none of them was left, not even one.” | 30 And it happened, while they were on the way, that the report came to David, saying, “Abessalōm struck all the sons of the king, and none of them was left, not even one.” |
31 Then the king arose, and tore his garments, and lay on the earth; and all his servants stood by with their clothes rent.
31 And the king rose and tore his garments and lay on the ground, and all his servants who were standing around him tore their garments. | 31 And the king rose and tore his garments and lay on the ground, and all his servants who were standing around him tore their garments. |
32 And Jonadab, the son of Shimeah David’s brother, answered and said, “Don’t let my lord suppose that they have slain all the young men the king’s sons; for only Amnon is dead; for by the appointment of Absalom this has been determined from the day that he forced his sister Tamar.
32 And Jōnadab, son of Samaa brother of David, answered and said, “Let not my master the king say that he put to death all the young men, the sons of the king, for only Amnōn alone has died, for it was determined by the mouth of Abessalōm from the day when he humbled Thēmar his sister. |
33 Now therefore don’t let my lord the king take the thing to his heart, to think that all the king’s sons are dead; for only Amnon is dead.”

33 And now, let not my master the king set a thing on his heart, saying, ‘All the sons of the king have died,’ but only Amnōn alone has died.” | 33 And now, let not my master the king set a thing on his heart, saying, ‘All the sons of the king have died,’ but only Amnōn alone has died.” |
34 But Absalom fled. And the young man who kept the watch lifted up his eyes, and looked, and, behold, there came much people by the way of the hill side behind him.
