II Samuel

1 And it came to be after this, that Absalom the son of David had a fair sister, whose name was Tamar; and Amnon the son of David loved her.

2 And Amnon was so vexed, that he fell sick for his sister Tamar; for she was a virgin; and Amnon thought it hard for him to do anything to her.

3 But Amnon had a friend, whose name was Jonadab, the son of Shimeah David’s brother; and Jonadab was a very subtle man.

4 And he said to him, “Why are you, being the king’s son, lean from day today? will you not tell me?” And Amnon said to him, “I love Tamar, my brother Absalom’s sister.”

4 And he said to him, “What’s with you that you are so miserable, Oh son of the king, morning by morning? Will you not tell me?” And Amnōn said to him, “I love Thēmar, the sister of Abessalōm my brother.”	4 And he said to him, “What’s with you that you are so miserable, Oh son of the king, morning by morning? 5 And Jonadab said to him, “Lay you down on your bed, and make yourself sick; and when your father comes to see you, say to him, please, let my sister Tamar come, and give me food, and dress the food in my sight, that I may see it, and eat it at her hand.”

6 So Amnon lay down, and made himself sick; and when the king came to see him, Amnon said to the king, “please, let Tamar my sister come, and make me a couple of cakes in my sight, that I may eat at her hand.”

7 Then David sent home to Tamar, saying, “Go now to your brother Amnon’s house, and dress him food.”

8 καὶ ἐπορεύθη Θήμαρ εἰς τὸν οἶκον Ἀμνὼν ἀδελφοῦ αὐτῆς, καὶ αὐτὸς κοιμώμενος. καὶ ἔλαβεν τὸ σταῖς καὶ ἐφύρασεν καὶ ἐκολλύρισεν κατ’ ὀφθαλμοὺς αὐτοῦ καὶ ἥψησεν τὰς κολλυρίδας·	8 καὶ ἐπορεύθης Θημὰρ εἰς τὸν οἶκον Ἀμνὼν ἀδελφοῦ αὐτῆς, καὶ αὐτὸς κοιμώμενος. καὶ ἔλαβε τὸ σταῖς καὶ ἐφύρασε καὶ ἐκολλύρισε κατ’ ὀφθαλμοὺς αὐτοῦ καὶ ἥψησε τὰς κολλυρίδας·

9 And she took the frying pan and emptied it out before him, but he didn’t want to eat. 10 And Amnon said to Tamar, “Bring the food into the chamber, that I may eat of your hand.” And Tamar took the cakes which she had made, and brought them into the chamber to Amnon her brother.

11 And when she had brought them to him to eat, he took hold of her, and said to her, “Come lie with me, my sister.”

12 And she answered him, “No, my brother, don’t force me; for no such thing anything to be done in Israēl: don’t you this folly.

13 And I, to which shall I cause my shame to go? And as for you, you shall be as one of the fools in Israēl. Now therefore, please, speak to the king; for he won’t withhold me from you.”

13 καὶ ἐγὼ ποῦ ἀποίσω τὸ ὄνειδός μου; καὶ σὺ ἔσῃ ὡς εἷς τῶν ἀφρόνων ἐν Ἰσραήλ· καὶ νῦν λάλησον δὴ πρὸς τὸν βασιλέα, ὅτι οὐ μὴ κωλύσῃ με ἀπὸ σοῦ.	13 καὶ ἐγὼ ποῦ ἀποίσω τὸ ὄνειδός μου; καὶ σὺ ἔσῃ ὡς εἷς τῶν ἀφρόνων ἐν Ἰσραήλ· καὶ νῦν λάλησον δὴ πρὸς τὸν βασιλέα, ὅτι οὐ μὴ κωλύσῃ με ἀπὸ σοῦ.
13 And I, where will I carry away my shame? And you, you shall be as one of the fools in Israēl. 14 However he would not listen to her voice: but, being stronger than she, forced her, and lay with her.

15 Then Amnon hated her exceedingly; so that the hatred with which he hated her was greater than the love with which he had loved her. And Amnon said to her, “Arise, be gone.”

15 καὶ ἐμίσησεν αὐτὴν Ἀμνὼν μῖσος μέγα σφόδρα, ὅτι μέγα τὸ μῖσος, ὃ ἐμίσησεν αὐτήν, ὑπὲρ τὴν ἀγάπην, ἣν ἠγάπησεν αὐτήν. καὶ εἶπεν αὐτῇ Ἀμνὼν Ἀνάστηθι καὶ πορεύου.	15 καὶ ἐμίσησεν αὐτὴν Ἀμνὼν μῖσος μέγα σφόδρα, ὅτι μέγα τὸ μῖσος, ὃν ἐμίσησεν αὐτὴν ὑπὲρ τὴν ἀγάπην, ἣν ἠγάπησεν αὐτήν. καὶ εἶπε αὐτῇ Ἀμνών· ἀνάστηθι καὶ πορεύου.
15 And Amnōn hated her with very great hatred; for the hatred with which he hated her was greater than the love with which he had loved her. 16 And she said to him, “There is no cause: this evil in sending me away is greater than the other that you did to me.” But he would not listen to her.

16 καὶ εἶπεν αὐτῷ Θήμαρ Μή, ἀδελφέ, ὅτι μεγάλη ἡ κακία ἡ ἐσχάτη ὑπὲρ τὴν πρώτην, ἣν ἐποίησας μετ’ ἐμοῦ, τοῦ ἐξαποστεῖλαί με. καὶ οὐκ ἠθέλησεν Ἀμνὼν ἀκοῦσαι τῆς φωνῆς αὐτῆς.	16 καὶ εἶπε αὐτῷ Θημάρ· μή, ἀδελφέ, ὅτι μεγάλη ἡ κακία ἡ ἐσχάτη ὑπὲρ τὴν πρώτην, ἣν ἐποίησας μετ’ ἐμοῦ τοῦ ἐξαποστεῖλαί με. καὶ οὐκ ἠθέλησεν Ἀμνὼν ἀκοῦσαι τῆς φωνῆς αὐτῆς.

17 Then he called his servant that ministered to him, and said, “Put now this woman out from me, and bolt the door after her.”

17 καὶ ἐκάλεσεν τὸ παιδάριον αὐτοῦ τὸν προεστηκότα τοῦ οἴκου αὐτοῦ καὶ εἶπεν αὐτῷ Ἐξαποστείλατε δὴ ταύτην ἀπ’ ἐμοῦ ἔξω καὶ ἀπόκλεισον τὴν θύραν ὀπίσω αὐτῆς.	17 καὶ ἐκάλεσε τὸ παιδάριον αὐτοῦ τὸν προεστηκότα τοῦ οἴκου καὶ εἶπε αὐτῷ· ἐξαποστείλατε δὴ ταύτην ἀπ’ ἐμοῦ ἔξω καὶ ἀπόκλεισον τὴν θύραν ὀπίσω αὐτῆς.

18 And she had a garment of various colours on her; for with such robes were the king’s daughters that were virgins dressed. Then his servant brought her out, and bolted the door after her.

18 καὶ ἐπ’ αὐτῆς ἦν χιτὼν καρπωτός, ὅτι οὕτως ἐνεδιδύσκοντο αἱ θυγατέρες τοῦ βασιλέως αἱ παρθένοι τοὺς ἐπενδύτας αὐτῶν· καὶ ἐξήγαγεν αὐτὴν ὁ λειτουργὸς αὐτοῦ ἔξω καὶ ἀπέκλεισεν τὴν θύραν ὀπίσω αὐτῆς·	18 καὶ ἐπ’ αὐτῆς ἦν χιτὼν καρπωτός, ὅτι οὕτως ἐνεδιδύσκοντο αἱ θυγατέρες τοῦ βασιλέως αἱ παρθένοι τοὺς ἐπενδύτας αὐτῶν· καὶ ἐξήγαγεν αὐτὴν ὁ λειτουργὸς αὐτοῦ ἔξω καὶ ἀπέκλεισε τὴν θύραν ὀπίσω αὐτῆς.
18 And on her was a tunic to the wrists, for so the daughters of the king who were virgins were dressed in their outer garments. 19 And Tamar put ashes on her head, and rent her garment of various colours that was on her, and laid her hand on her head, and went on crying.

19 καὶ ἔλαβεν Θήμαρ σποδὸν καὶ ἐπέθηκεν ἐπὶ τὴν κεφαλὴν αὐτῆς καὶ τὸν χιτῶνα τὸν καρπωτὸν τὸν ἐπ’ αὐτῆς διέρρηξεν καὶ ἐπέθηκεν τὰς χεῖρας αὐτῆς ἐπὶ τὴν κεφαλὴν αὐτῆς καὶ ἐπορεύθη πορευομένη καὶ κράζουσα.	19 καὶ ἔλαβε Θημὰρ σποδὸν καὶ ἐπέθηκεν ἐπὶ τὴν κεφαλὴν αὐτῆς καὶ τὸν χιτῶνα τὸν καρπωτὸν τὸν ἐπ’ αὐτῆς διέρρηξε καὶ ἐπέθηκε τὰς χεῖρας αὐτῆς ἐπὶ τὴν κεφαλὴν αὐτῆς καὶ ἐπορεύθης πορευομένη καὶ κράζουσα.

20 And Absalom her brother said to her, “Has Amnon your brother been with you? but hold now your peace, my sister: he is your brother; don’t regard this thing.” So Tamar remained desolate in her brother Absalom’s house.
