Hushai’s Counsel
1Moreover Ahithophel said to Absalom, “Let me now choose out 12,000 men, and I will arise and pursue after David this night.
1And Achitophel said to Abessalom, “Let me now choose out for myself 12,000 men, and I will arise and pursue after David this night. | 1And Achitophel said to Abessalom, “Let me now choose out for myself 12,000 men, and I will arise and pursue after David this night. |
2And I will come on him while he is weary and weak handed, and will make him afraid; and all the people who are with him shall flee; and I will smite the king only.
2and I will come on him when he is weary and weak-handed, and I will surprise him; and all the people with him shall flee, and I will strike only the king. | 2and I will come on him when he is weary and weak-handed, and I will surprise him; and all the people with him shall flee, and I will strike only the king. |
3And I will bring back all the people to you: the man whom you seek is as if all returned; so all the people shall be in peace.”
3And I will bring back all the people to you, the way a bride returns to her husband. You seek only one man, and all the people shall have peace.” | 3And I will bring back all the people to you, the way a bride returns to her husband. You seek only one man, and all the people shall have peace.” |
4And the saying pleased Absalom well, and all the elders of Israēl.
4And the saying was right in the eyes of Abessalom, and in the eyes of all the elders of Israēl. | 4And the saying was right in the eyes of Abessalom, and in the eyes of all the elders of Israēl. |
5Then Absalom said, “Now call Hushai the Archite also, and let’s hear likewise what he says.”
5And Abessalom said, “Please call Chusi the Arachite also, and let’s hear what is in his mouth, even his, too.” | 5And Abessalom said, “Please call Chusi the Arachite also, and let’s hear what is in his mouth, even his, too.” |
6And when Hushai came to Absalom, Absalom spoke to him, saying, “Ahithophel has spoken after this manner: shall we do after his saying? If not; speak.”

6And Chusi went in to Abessalom, and Abessalom spoke to him, saying, “Achitophel spoke according to this statement. Shall we do according to his word? But if not, say it. | 6And Chusi went in to Abessalom, and Abessalom spoke to him, saying, “Achitophel spoke according to this statement. Shall we do according to his word? But if not, say it.” |
7And Hushai said to Absalom, “The counsel that Ahithophel has given is not good at this time.
7And Chusi said to Abessalom, “This counsel which Achitophel has counselled this one time is not good.” | 7And Chusi said to Abessalom, “This counsel which Achitophel has counselled this one time is not good.” |
8For,” said Hushai, “you know your father and his men, that they are mighty men, and they are chafed in their minds, as a bear robbed of her whelps in the field; and your father is a man of war, and won’t lodge with the people.
8And Chusi said, “You know your father and his men, that they are very mighty, and bitter in their spirit, as a bereaved bear in the field, and as a wild boar in the plain; and your father is a man of war, and will never give the people rest. | 8And Chusi said, “You know your father and his men, that they are very mighty, and bitter in their spirit, as a bereaved bear in the field, and as a wild boar in the plain; and your father is a man of war, and will never give the people rest. |
9Behold, he is hid now in some pit, or in some other place; and it will come to pass, when some of them are overthrown at the first, that whoever hears it will say, There is a slaughter among the people who follow Absalom.
9For, listen, he has now been hidden in one of the hills or in some other place; and it shall be when he falls on them at the beginning, that some one will certainly hear, and say, ‘There has been a slaughter among the people who follow after Abessalom.’ ” | 9For, listen, he has now been hidden in one of the hills or in some other place; and it shall be when he falls on them at the beginning, that some one will certainly hear, and say, ‘There has been a slaughter among the people who follow after Abessalom.’ |
10And he also who is valiant, whose heart is as the heart of a lion, shall utterly melt; for all Israēl knows that your father is a mighty man, and they who are with him are valiant men.
10Then even he who is strong, whose heart is as the heart of a lion, –it will utterly melt; because all Israēl knows that your father is mighty, and they who are with him are mighty sons. | 10Then even he who is strong, whose heart is as the heart of a lion, –it will utterly melt; because all Israēl knows that your father is mighty, and they who are with him are mighty sons. |
11Therefore I counsel that all Israēl be generally gathered to you, from Dan even to Beersheba, as the sand that is by the sea for multitude; and that you go to battle in your own person.
11For thus I have surely given counsel, that all Israēl will be certainly gathered to you from Dan even to Bērsabee, as the sand that is on the sea-shore for multitude; and that your presence go in the midst of them. | 11For thus I have surely given counsel, that all Israēl will be certainly gathered to you from Dan even to Bērsabee, as the sand that is on the sea-shore for multitude; and that your presence go in the midst of them. |
12So shall we come on him in some place where he shall be found, and we will light on him as the dew falls on the ground; and of him and of all the men who are with him there shall not be left so much as one.
12And we will come on him in one of the places where we might find him there, and we will encamp against him, as the dew falls on the earth; and we won’t leave behind of him and of his men so much as one. | 12And we will come on him in one of the places where we might find him there, and we will encamp against him, as the dew falls on the earth; and we won’t leave behind of him and of his men so much as one. |
13Moreover, if he has gone into a city, then shall all Israēl bring ropes to that city, and we will draw it into the river, until there isn’t one small stone found there.”
13And if he has been received into a city, then shall all Israēl take ropes to that city, and we will drag it into the river, that not even a stone will be left there.” | 13And if he has been received into a city, then shall all Israēl take ropes to that city, and we will drag it into the river, that not even a stone will be left there.” |
14And Absalom and all the men of Israēl said, “The counsel of Hushai the Archite is better than the counsel of Ahithophel.” For Yahweh had appointed to defeat the good counsel of Ahithophel, to the intent that Yahweh might bring evil on Absalom.
14And Abessalom, and all the men of Israēl said, “The counsel of Chusi the Arachite is better than the counsel of Achitophel.” For the Lord ordained to frustrate the good counsel of Achitophel, so that the Lord might bring all evil on Abessalom. | 14And Abessalom, and all the men of Israēl said, “The counsel of Chusi the Arachite is better than the counsel of Achitophel.” For the Lord ordained to frustrate the good counsel of Achitophel, so that the Lord might bring all evil on Abessalom. |
Hushai’s Warning Saves David
15Then said Hushai to Zadok and to Abiathar the priests, “Thus and thus did Ahithophel counsel Absalom and the elders of Israēl; and thus and thus have I counselled.
15And Chusi the Arachite said to Sadōk and Abiathar the priests, “Thus and thus Achitophel counselled Abessalom and the elders of Israēl; and thus and thus have I counselled. | 15And Chusi the Arachite said to Sadōk and Abiathar the priests, Thus and thus Achitophel counselled Abessalom and the elders of Israēl; and thus and thus have I counselled. |
16Now therefore send quickly, and tell David, saying, ‘Lodge not this night in the plains of the wilderness, but speedily pass over; lest the king be swallowed up, and all the people that are with him.’ ”
16And now send quickly and report to David, saying, ‘Don’t lodge tonight in Arabōth of the wilderness. Cross over and hurry, lest someone should swallow up the king, and all the people with him.’ ” | 16And now send quickly and report to David, saying, ‘Don’t lodge tonight in Arabōth of the wilderness. Cross over and hurry, lest someone should swallow up the king, and all the people with him.’ ” |
17Now Jonathan and Ahimaaz stayed by En-rogel; for they might not be seen to come into the city; and a wench went and told them; and they went and told king David.
17And Jonathan and Achimaas stood by the well of Rōgēl, and a maid-servant went and reported to them, then they would depart and tell king David; for they were unable to be seen entering into the city. | 17And Jonathan and Achimaas stood by the well of Rōgēl, and a maid-servant went and reported to them, then they would depart and tell king David; for they were unable to be seen entering into the city. |
18Nevertheless a lad saw them, and told Absalom; but they went both of them away quickly, and came to a man’s house in Bahurim, which had a well in his court; to which they went down.
18But a lad saw them and reported to Abessalom; and the two went quickly, and entered into the house of a man in Baurim; and he had a well in his court, and they went down there. | 18But a lad saw them and reported to Abessalom; and the two went quickly, and entered into the house of a man in Baurim; and he had a well in his court, and they went down there. |
19And the woman took and spread a covering over the well’s mouth, and spread ground grain on it; and the thing wasn’t known.
19And the wife took a covering, and spread it over the mouth of the well, and spread out grain on it to dry, and the matter wasn’t known. | 19And the wife took a covering, and spread it over the mouth of the well, and spread out grain on it to dry, and the matter wasn’t known. |
20And when Absalom’s servants came to the woman to the house, they said, “Where is Ahimaaz and Jonathan?” And the woman said to them, “They are gone over the brook of water.” And when they had sought and couldn’t find them, they returned to Jerusalem.

20And the servants of Abessalom came to the woman into the house, and said, “Where are Achimaas and Jonathan?” and the woman said to them, “They are gone a little way across the water.” And they searched and didn’t find them, and returned to Jerusalem. | 20And the servants of Abessalom came to the woman into the house, and said, “Where are Achimaas and Jonathan?” and the woman said to them, “They are gone a little way across the water.” And they searched and didn’t find them, and returned to Jerusalem. |
21And it came to be, after they were departed, that they came up out of the well, and went and told king David, and said to David, “Arise, and pass quickly over the water; for thus has Ahithophel counselled against you.”
21And it happened after they were gone, that they came up out of the well, and departed. And they reported to king David, and said to David, “Arise and go quickly over the water, for thus has Achitophel counselled concerning you.” | 21And it happened after they were gone, that they came up out of the well, and departed. And they reported to king David, and said to David, “Arise and go quickly over the water, for thus has Achitophel counselled concerning you.” |
22Then David arose, and all the people who were with him, and they passed over the Jordan. By the morning light there was not one of those left who hadn’t gone over the Jordan.
22And David rose up and all the people with him, and they passed over the Jordan until the morning light; there wasn’t one missing who didn’t pass over the Jordan. | 22And David rose up and all the people with him, and they passed over the Jordan until the morning light; there wasn’t one missing who didn’t pass over the Jordan. |
23And when Ahithophel saw that his counsel wasn’t followed, he saddled his donkey, and arose, and went home to his house, to his city, and put his household in order, and hanged himself, and died, and was buried in the sepulchre of his father.
23And Achitophel saw that his counsel wasn’t happening, and he saddled his donkey, and rose and departed to his house into his city; and he gave orders to his household, and hanged himself, and died, and was buried in the tomb of his father. | 23And Achitophel saw that his counsel wasn’t happening, and he saddled his donkey, and rose and departed to his house into his city; and he gave orders to his household, and hanged himself, and died, and was buried in the tomb of his father. |
24Then David came to Mahanaim. And Absalom passed over Jordan, he and all the men of Israēl with him.
