Solomon’s Rule Consolidated

1 And Solomon made affinity with Pharaoh king of Egypt, and took Pharaoh’s daughter, and brought her into the city of David, until he had made an end of building his own house, and the house of Yahweh, and the wall of Jerusalem round about.

1 Salōmōn took the daughter of Pharaō to himself as wife and brought her into the city of David until he finished building his home and the house of the Lord and the wall of Jerusalem. 1 The kingdom was established by the hand of Salōmōn. Salōmōn made an alliance (by marriage) with Pharaō the king of Aigypt and took the daughter of Pharaō to himself as wife and brought her into the city of David until he finished building his home and the house of the Lord and the wall.

2 Except the people sacrificed in high places, because there was no house built to the name of Yahweh, until those days.

2 Nevertheless the people burned incense on the high places, because a house had not yet been built to the Lord. 2 Nevertheless the people burned incense on the high places, because a house had not yet been built to the Lord.

3 And Solomon loved Yahweh, walking in the statutes of David his father: except he sacrificed and burned incense in high places.

3 And Salōmōn loved the Lord, so as to walk in the ordinances of David his father; except he sacrificed and burnt incense on the high places. 3 And Salōmōn loved the Lord, so as to walk in the ordinances of David his father; except he sacrificed and burnt incense on the high places.

4 And the king went to Gibeon to sacrifice there; for that was the great high place: Solomon offered 1000 burnt offerings on that altar.

4 And he arose and went to Gabaōn to sacrifice there, for that was the highest place, and great: Salōmōn offered a whole-burnt-offering of a thousand animals on the altar in Gabaōn. 4 And he arose and went to Gabaōn to sacrifice there, for that was the highest place, and great: Salōmōn offered a whole-burnt-offering of a thousand animals on the altar in Gabaōn.

5 In Gibeon Yahweh appeared to Solomon in a dream by night; and God said, Ask what I shall give you.

5 And the Lord appeared to Salōmōn in a dream by night, and the Lord said to Solomon, “Ask some petition for yourself.” 5 And the Lord appeared to Salōmōn in a dream by night, and the Lord said to Solomon, “Ask some petition for yourself.”

Solomon’s Prayer

6 And Solomon said, You have shown to your servant David my father great mercy, according as he walked before you in truth, and in righteousness, and in uprightness of heart with you; and you have kept for him this great kindness, that you have given him a son to sit on his throne, as it is this day.

6 And Salōmōn said, “You have dealt very mercifully with your servant David my father according as he walked before you in truth, and in righteousness, and in uprightness of heart with you, and you have kept for him this great mercy, to set his son on his throne, as it is this day. 6 And Salōmōn said, “You have dealt very mercifully with your servant David my father according as he walked before you in truth, and in righteousness, and in uprightness of heart with you, and you have kept for him this great mercy, to set his son on his throne, as it is this day.

7 And now, Oh Yahweh my Elohim, you have made your servant king instead of David my father; and I am but a little child: I don’t know how to go out or come in.

7 And now, Oh Lord my God, you have appointed your servant in the room of David my father; and I am a little child, and don’t know my going out an my coming in. 7 And now, Oh Lord my God, you have appointed your servant in the room of David my father; and I am a little child, and don’t know my going out an my coming in.

8 And your servant is in the midst of your people which you have chosen, a great people, that cannot be numbered nor counted for multitude.

8 But your servant is in the midst of your people, whom you have chosen, a great people, which cannot be numbered. 8 But your servant is in the midst of your people, whom you have chosen, a great people, which cannot be numbered.

9 Give therefore your servant an understanding heart to judge your people, that I may discern between good and bad; for who is able to judge this your so great a people?

9 καὶ δώσεις τῷ δούλῳ σου καρδίαν ἀκούειν καὶ διακρίνειν τὸν λαόν σου ἐν δικαιοσύνῃ τοῦ συνίειν ἀνὰ μέσον ἀγαθοῦ καὶ κακοῦ· ὅτι τίς δυνήσεται κρίνειν τὸν λαόν σου τὸν βαρὺν τοῦτον; 9 καὶ δώσεις τῷ δούλῳ σου καρδίαν ἀκούειν καὶ διακρίνειν τὸν λαόν σου ἐν δικαιοσύνῃ καὶ τοῦ συνιεῖν ἀνὰ μέσον ἀγαθοῦ καὶ κακοῦ· ὅτι τίς δυνηθήσεται κρίνειν τὸν λαόν σου τὸν βαρὺν τοῦτον;
9

You shall give therefore to your servant a heart to hear and to judge your people justly, and to discern between good and evil; for who will be able to judge this your great people?”

9 You shall give therefore to your servant a heart to hear and to judge your people justly, and to discern between good and evil; for who will be able to judge this your great people?”

God’s Answer

10 And the speech pleased the Lord, that Solomon had asked this thing.

10 And it was pleasing before the Lord, that Salōmōn asked this thing. 10 And it was pleasing before the Lord, that Salōmōn asked this thing.

11 And God said to him, Because you have asked this thing, and haven’t asked for yourself long life; neither have asked riches for yourself, nor have asked the life of your enemies; but have asked for yourself understanding to discern judgment;

11 And the Lord said to him, “Because you have asked this thing of me, and haven’t asked for yourself long life, and haven’t asked wealth, nor have asked the lives of your enemies, but have asked for yourself understanding to hear judgment; 11 And the Lord said to him, “Because you have asked this thing of me, and haven’t asked for yourself long life, and haven’t asked wealth, nor have asked the lives of your enemies, but have asked for yourself understanding to hear judgment;

12 Behold, I have done according to your words: lo, I have given you a wise and an understanding heart; so that there was none like you before you, neither after you shall any arise like you.

12 behold, I have done according to your word: behold, I have given you an understanding and wise heart: there hasn’t been anyone like you before you, and after you there shall not arise one like you. 12 behold, I have done according to your word: behold, I have given you an understanding and wise heart: there hasn’t been anyone like you before you, and after you there shall not arise one like you.

13 And I have also given you what you haven’t asked, both riches, and honour; so that there shall not be any among the kings like you all your days.

13 And I have given you what you haven’t asked, wealth and glory, so that there hasn’t been anyone like you among kings. 13 And I have given you what you haven’t asked, wealth and glory, so that there hasn’t been anyone like you among kings.

14 And if you will walk in my ways, to keep my statutes and my commandments, as your father David walked, then I will lengthen your days.

14 And if you will walk in my way, to keep my commandments and my ordinances, as David your father walked, then will I multiply your days.” 14 And if you will walk in my way, to keep my commandments and my ordinances, as David your father walked, then will I multiply your days.”

15 And Solomon awoke; and, behold, it was a dream. And he came to Jerusalem, and stood before the ark of the covenant of Yahweh, and offered up burnt offerings, and offered peace offerings, and made a feast to all his servants.

15 And Salōmōn awoke, and, behold, it was a dream; and he arose and came to Jerusalem, and stood before the altar that was in front of the ark of the covenant of the Lord in Siōn; and he offered whole-burnt-offerings, and sacrificed peace-offerings, and made a great banquet for himself and all his servants.

Solomon Wisely Judges

16 Then came there two women, who were harlots, to the king, and stood before him.

16 Then two women prostitutes appeared before the king, and they stood before him. 16 Then two women prostitutes appeared before the king, and they stood before him.

17 And the one woman said, Oh my lord, I and this woman dwell in one house; and I was delivered of a child with her in the house.

17 And the one woman said, “Hear me, my lord; I and this woman dwelt in one house, and we gave birth in the house. 17 And the one woman said, “Hear me, my lord; I and this woman dwelt in one house, and we gave birth in the house.

18 And it happened the third day after that I was delivered, that this woman was delivered also; and we were together; there was no stranger with us in the house, except we two in the house.

18 And it came to be on the third day after I gave birth, this woman also gave birth; and we were together; and there was no one with us other than both of us in the house. 18 And it came to be on the third day after I gave birth, this woman also gave birth; and we were together; and there was no one with us other than both of us in the house.

19 And this woman’s child died in the night; because she laid on it.

19 And this woman’s child died in the night as she laid on it. 19 And this woman’s child died in the night as she laid on it.

20 And she arose at midnight, and took my son from beside me, while your handmaid slept, and laid it in her bosom, and laid her dead child in my bosom.

20 and she arose in the middle of the night, and took my son from my arms, and laid him in her bosom, and laid her dead son in my bosom. 20 and she arose in the middle of the night, and took my son from my arms, and laid him in her bosom, and laid her dead son in my bosom.

21 And when I rose in the morning to give my child suck, behold, it was dead; but when I had considered it in the morning, behold, it wasn’t my son, to whom I gave birth.

21 and I arose in the morning to nurse my son, and he was dead: and, look! I observed him carefully in the morning, and, look! it wasn’t my son to whom I gave birth.” 21 and I arose in the morning to nurse my son, and he was dead: and, look! I observed him carefully in the morning, and, look! it wasn’t my son to whom I gave birth.”

22 And the other woman said, No; but the living is my son, and the dead is your son. And this one said, No; but the dead is your son, and the living is my son. Thus they spoke before the king.
