David’s Charge to Solomon
1 Now the days of David drew near that he should die; and he charged Solomon his son, saying,
1 And the days of David drew near that he should die; and he addressed his son Salōmōn, saying, | 1 And the days of David drew near that he should die; and he addressed his son Salōmōn, saying, |
2 I go the way of all the earth: be strong therefore, and show yourself a man;
2 “ I go the way of all the earth; and be strong, and you shall become a man; | 2 “ I go the way of all the earth; and be strong, and you shall become a man; |
3 And keep the duties of Yahweh your Elohim, to walk in his ways, to keep his statutes, and his commandments, and his judgments, and his testimonies, as it is written in the law of Moses, that you may prosper in all that you do, and wherever you turn yourself.
3 and keep the duties of the Lord your God, to walk in his ways, to keep the commandments and the ordinances and the judgments which are written in the law of Mōyseōs; that you may understand what you shall do in all things that I command you; | 3 and keep the duties of the Lord your God, to walk in his ways, to keep the commandments and the ordinances and the judgments which are written in the law of Mōyseōs; that you may understand what you shall do in all things that I command you; |
4 That Yahweh may continue his word which he spoke concerning me, saying, If your children take heed to their way, to walk before me in truth with all their heart and with all their soul, there shall not fail you (said he) a man on the throne of Israēl.
4 that the Lord may confirm his word which he spoke, saying, ‛If your sons shall take heed to their way to walk before me in truth with all their heart and with all their soul, I promise you, saying, there shall not fail you a man on the throne of Israēl.’ | 4 that the Lord may confirm his word which he spoke, saying, ‛If your sons shall take heed to their way to walk before me in truth with all their heart, I promise you, saying, there shall not fail you a man on the throne of Israēl.’ |
5 Moreover you know also what Joab the son of Zeruiah did to me, and what he did to the two captains of the armies of Israēl, to Abner the son of Ner, and to Amasa the son of Jether, whom he killed, and shed the blood of war in peace, and put the blood of war on his girdle that was about his loins, and in his shoes that were on his feet.
5 Moreover you know all that Jōab the son of Sarouias did to me, what he did to the two captains of the forces of Israēl, to Abennēr the son of Nēr, and to Amessai the son of Jether, that he killed them, and shed the blood of war in peace, and put innocent blood on his girdle that was about his loins, and on his sandal that was on his foot. |
6 Do therefore according to your wisdom, and don’t let his gray head go down to the grave in peace.
6 Therefore you shall deal with him according to your wisdom, and you shall not bring down his grey hairs in peace to the grave. | 6 Therefore you shall deal with him according to your wisdom, and you shall not bring down his grey hairs in peace to the grave. |
7 But show kindness to the sons of Barzillai the Gileadite, and let them be of those who eat at your table; for so they came to me when I fled because of Absalom your brother.
7 But you shall deal kindly with the sons of Berzelli the Galaadite, and they shall be among those who eat at your table; for thus they drew near to me when I fled from the face of your brother Abessalōm. | 7 But you shall deal kindly with the sons of Berzelli the Galaadite, and they shall be among those who eat at your table; for thus they drew near to me when I fled from the face of your brother Abessalōm. |
8 And, behold, you have with you Shimei the son of Gera, a Benjamite of Bahurim, who cursed me with a grievous curse in the day when I went to Mahanaim; but he came down to meet me at Jordan, and I swore to him by Yahweh, saying, I won’t put you to death with the sword.
8 And, look! there is with you Semei the son of Gēra, a Jemenite of Baourim; and he cursed me with a grievous curse in the day when I went into the camp; and he came down to Jordan to meet me, and I solemnly promised to him by the Lord, saying, ‛I won’t put you to death with the sword.’ | 8 And, look! there is with you Semei the son of Gēra, a Jemenite of Baourim; and he cursed me with a grievous curse in the day when I went into the camp; and he came down to Jordan to meet me, and I solemnly promised to him by the Lord, saying, ‛I won’t put you to death with the sword.’ |
9 Now therefore don’t hold him guiltless; for you are a wise man, and know what you anything to do to him; but bring down his gray head to the grave with blood.
9 But you shall by no means hold him guiltless, for you are a wise man, and will know what you shall do to him, and shall bring down his grey hairs with blood to the grave.” | 9 But you shall by no means hold him guiltless, for you are a wise man, and will know what you shall do to him, and shall bring down his grey hairs with blood to the grave.” |
Death of David
10 So David slept with his fathers, and was buried in the city of David.

22 And she said, “therefore give Abisag the Sōmanitis to Adōnia your brother for a wife.” And king Salōmōn then answered and said to his mother, “And why have you asked Abisak for Adonias? ask for him the kingdom also; for he is my elder brother, and he has for his companion Abiathar the priest, and Joab the son of Sarouias the commander-in-chief.” | 22 And king Salōmōn answered and said to his mother, “And why have you asked Abisag for Adōnias? Ask for him the kingdom also; for he is my elder brother, and he has for his companion Abiathar the priest, and Joab the son of Sarouias the commander-in-chief.” |
23 Then king Solomon swore by Yahweh, saying, God do so to me, and more also, if Adonijah hasn’t spoken this word against his own life.
23 And king Salōmōn solemnly promised by the Lord, saying, “God do so to me, and more also, if it isn’t that Adonias has spoken this word against his own life. | 23 And king Salōmōn solemnly promised by the Lord, saying, “God do so to me, and more also, if it isn’t that Adōnias has spoken this word against his own life. |
24 Now therefore, as Yahweh lives, who has established me, and set me on the throne of David my father, and who has made me a house, as he promised, Adonijah shall be put to death this day.
24 And now as the Lord lives who has established me, and set me on the throne of my father David, and he has made me a house, as the Lord spoke, this day shall Adōnias be put to death.” | 24 And now as the Lord lives who has established me, and set me on the throne of my father David, and he has made me a house, as the Lord spoke, this day shall Adōnias be put to death.” |
25 And king Solomon sent by the hand of Benaiah the son of Jehoiada; and he fell on him that he died.
25 So king Salōmōn sent by the hand of Banaias the son of Jōdae, and he killed him, and Adōnias died on that day. | 25 So king Salōmōn sent by the hand of Banaias the son of Jōdae, and he killed him, and Adōnias died on that day. |
26 And to Abiathar the priest said the king, Get to Anathoth, to your own fields; for you are worthy of death; but I won’t at this time put you to death, because you carried the ark of Adonai Yahweh before David my father, and because you have been afflicted in all in which my father was afflicted.
26 And the king said to Abiathar the priest, “Depart quickly to Anathōth to your farm, for you are worthy of death this day; but I won’t slay you, because you have carried the ark of the covenant of the Lord before my father, and because you were afflicted in all things in which my father was afflicted.” | 26 And the king said to Abiathar the priest, “Depart quickly to Anathōth to your farm, for you are worthy of death this day; but I won’t slay you, because you have carried the ark of the covenant of the Lord before my father, and because you were afflicted in all things in which my father was afflicted.” |
27 So Solomon thrust out Abiathar from being priest to Yahweh; that he might fulfill the word of Yahweh, which he spoke concerning the house of Eli in Shiloh.
27 And Salōmōn removed Abiathar from being a priest of the Lord, that the word of the Lord might be fulfilled, which he spoke concerning the house of Ēli in Sēlōm. | 27 And Salōmōn removed Abiathar from being a priest of the Lord, that the word of the Lord might be fulfilled, which he spoke concerning the house of Hēli in Sēlōm. |
Joab Executed
28 Then tidings came to Joab; for Joab had turned after Adonijah, though he didn’t turn after Absalom. And Joab fled to the tent of Yahweh, and caught hold on the horns of the altar.

29 And it was told king Solomon that Joab was fled to the tent of Yahweh; and, behold, he is by the altar. Then Solomon sent Benaiah the son of Jehoiada, saying, Go, fall on him.

31 And the king said to him, Do as he has said, and fall on him, and bury him; that you may take away the innocent blood, which Joab shed, from me, and from the house of my father.

35-1 And the king appointed Banaiou son of Jōdae in his place over the army; and the kingdom was established in Jerousalēm; and as for Sadōk the priest, the king appointed him to be high priest in the room of Abiathar. | 35-1 And the king appointed Banaias son of Jōdae in his place over the army; and the kingdom was established in Jerousalēm; and as for Sadōk the priest, the king appointed him to be high priest in the room of Abiathar. And Salōmōn son of David reigned over Israēl and Jouda in Jerousalēm. and the Lord gave understanding to Salōmōn, and very much wisdom, and largeness of heart, as the sand by the sea-shore. |
| 35-2 And the wisdom of Salōmōn abounded exceedingly beyond the wisdom of all the ancients, and beyond all the wise men of Egypt. |
| 35-3 and he took the daughter of Pharao, and brought her into the city of David, until he had finished building his own house, and the house of the Lord first, and the wall of Jerusalem round about. In seven years he made and finished them. |
| 35-4 And Salōmōn had 70,000 bearers of burdens, and 8000 hewers of stone in the mountain. |
35-5

35-5 and Salōmōn made the sea, and the bases, and the great lavers, and the pillars, and the fountain of the court, and the copper-alloy sea; and he built the citadel as a defence above it, he made a breach in the wall of the city of David. |

35-13 οὗτος κατηράσατό με κατάραν ὀδυνηρὰν ἐν ᾗ ἡμέρᾳ ἐπορευόμην εἰς παρεμβολάς· | 35-13 he cursed me with a grievous curse in the day when I went into the camp; |
35-14 καὶ αὐτὸς κατέβαινεν εἰς ἀπαντήν μοι ἐπὶ τὸν Ἰορδάνην, καὶ ὤμοσα αὐτῷ κατὰ τοῦ κυρίου λέγων Εἰ θανατωθήσεται ἐν ῥομφαίᾳ· | 35-14 and he came down to meet me at Jordan, and I swore to him by the Lord, saying, ‛He shall not be slain with the sword.’ |
| 35-15 But now don’t you hold him guiltless, for you are a man of understanding, and you will know what you shall do to him, and you shall bring down his grey hairs with blood to the grave.” |
36 And the king sent and called for Shimei, and said to him, Build a house in Jerusalem, and dwell there, and don’t go forth from there to anywhere.
