Chapter 18

God Deals Justly with Individuals

1 The word of Yahweh came to me again, saying,

1 And the word of the Lord came to me, saying, 1 And the word of the Lord came to me, saying,

2 What mean you, that you use this proverb concerning the land of Israēl, saying, The fathers have eaten sour grapes, and the children’s teeth are set on edge?

2 υἱὲ ἀνθρώπου, τί ὑμῖν παραβολὴ αὕτη ἐν τοῖς υἱοῖς Ἰσραὴλ λέγοντες οἱ πατέρες ἔφαγον ὄμφακα, καὶ οἱ ὀδόντες τῶν τέκνων ἐγομφίασαν; 2 υἱὲ ἀνθρώπου, τί ὑμῖν παραβολὴ αὕτη ἐν τοῖς υἱοῖς Ἰσραὴλ λέγοντες· οἱ πατέρες ἔφαγον ὄμφακα καὶ οἱ ὀδόντες τῶν τέκνων ἐγομφίασαν;
2 Son of man, what mean you by this parable among the sons of Israēl, saying, The fathers have eaten unripe grapes, and the children’s teeth have been set on edge? 2 Son of man, what mean you by this parable among the sons of Israēl, saying, The fathers have eaten unripe grapes, and the children’s teeth have been set on edge?

3 As I live, says Adonai Yahweh, you shall not have occasion any more to use this proverb in Israēl.

3 As I live, says the Lord, surely this parable shall no more be spoken in Israēl. 3 As I live, says the Lord, surely this parable shall no more be spoken in Israēl.

4 Behold, all souls are mine; as the soul of the father, so also the soul of the son is my: the soul that sins, it shall die.

4 For all souls are mine; as the soul of the father, so also the soul of the son, they are my: the soul that sins, it shall die. 4 For all souls are mine; as the soul of the father, so also the soul of the son, they are my: the soul that sins, it shall die.

5 But if a man be just, and do what is lawful and right,

5 But the man who shall be just, who executes judgment and righteousness, 5 But the man who shall be just, who executes judgment and righteousness,

6 And hasn’t eaten on the mountains, neither has lifted up his eyes to the idols of the house of Israēl, neither has defiled his neighbour’s wife, neither has come near to a menstruating woman,

6 who shall not eat on the mountains, and shall not at all lift up his eyes to the devices of the house of Israēl, and shall not defile his neighbor’s wife, and shall not draw near to her that is removed, 6 who shall not eat on the mountains, and shall not at all lift up his eyes to the devices of the house of Israēl, and shall not defile his neighbor’s wife, and shall not draw near to her that is removed,

7 And hasn’t oppressed any, but has restored to the debtor his pledge, has spoiled none by violence, has given his bread to the hungry, and has covered the naked with a garment;

7 and shall not oppress any man, but shall return the pledge of the debtor, and shall be guilty of no plunder, shall give his bread to the hungry, and clothe the naked; 7 and shall not oppress any man, but shall return the pledge of the debtor, and shall be guilty of no plunder, shall give his bread to the hungry, and clothe the naked;

8 He who hasn’t given forth on usury, neither has taken any increase, that has withdrawn his hand from iniquity, has executed true judgment between man and man,

8 and shall not lend his money on usury, and shall not receive usurious increase, and shall turn back his hand from injustice, shall execute righteous judgment between a man and his neighbor, 8 and shall not lend his money on usury, and shall not receive usurious increase, and shall turn back his hand from injustice, shall execute righteous judgment between a man and his neighbor,

9 Has walked in my statutes, and has kept my judgments, to deal truly; he is just, he shall surely live, says Adonai Yahweh.

9 and has walked in my commandments and kept my ordinances, to do them; he is righteous, he shall surely live, says the Lord. 9 and has walked in my commandments and kept my ordinances, to do them; he is righteous, he shall surely live, says the Lord.

10 If he fathered a son that is a robber, a shedder of blood, and that does the like to anyone of these things,

10 And if he beget a mischievous son, shedding blood and committing sins, 10 And if he beget a mischievous son, shedding blood and committing sins,

11 And that doesn’t any of those duties, but even has eaten on the mountains, and defiled his neighbour’s wife,

11 who hasn’t walked in the way of his righteous father, but has even eaten on the mountains, and has defiled his neighbor’s wife, 11 who hasn’t walked in the way of his righteous father, but has even eaten on the mountains, and has defiled his neighbor’s wife,

12 Has oppressed the poor and needy, has spoiled by violence, hasn’t restored the pledge, and has lifted up his eyes to the idols, has committed abomination,

12 and has oppressed the poor and needy, and has committed robbery, and not restored a pledge, and has set his eyes on idols, has wrought iniquities, 12 and has oppressed the poor and needy, and has committed robbery, and not restored a pledge, and has set his eyes on idols, has wrought iniquities,

13 Has given forth on usury, and has taken increase: he shall then live? He shall not live: he has done all these abominations; he shall surely die; his blood shall be on him.

13 has lent on usury, and taken usurious increase; he shall by no means live: he has wrought all these iniquities; he shall surely die; his blood shall be on him. 13 has lent on usury, and taken usurious increase; he shall by no means live: he has wrought all these iniquities; he shall surely die; his blood shall be on him.

14 Now, lo, if he fathered a son, that sees all his father’s sins which he has done, and considers, and doesn’t such like,

14 And if he beget a son, and the son see all his father’s sins which he has wrought, and fear, and not do according to them, 14 And if he beget a son, and the son see all his father’s sins which he has wrought, and fear, and not do according to them,

15 That hasn’t eaten on the mountains, neither has lifted up his eyes to the idols of the house of Israēl, hasn’t defiled his neighbour’s wife,

15 and if he hasn’t eaten on the mountains, and hasn’t set his eyes on the devices of the house of Israēl, and hasn’t defiled his neighbor’s wife, 15 and if he hasn’t eaten on the mountains, and hasn’t set his eyes on the devices of the house of Israēl, and hasn’t defiled his neighbor’s wife,

16 Neither has oppressed any, hasn’t withheld the pledge, neither has spoiled by violence, but has given his bread to the hungry, and has covered the naked with a garment,

16 and hasn’t oppressed a man, and hasn’t retained the pledge, nor committed robbery, has given his bread to the hungry, and has clothed the naked, 16 and hasn’t oppressed a man, and hasn’t retained the pledge, nor committed robbery, has given his bread to the hungry, and has clothed the naked,

17 That has taken off his hand from the poor, that hasn’t received usury nor increase, has executed my judgments, has walked in my statutes; he shall not die for the iniquity of his father, he shall surely live.

17 and has turned back his hand from unrighteousness, hasn’t received interest or usurious increase, has wrought righteousness, and walked in my ordinances; he shall not die for the iniquities of his father, he shall surely live. 17 and has turned back his hand from unrighteousness, hasn’t received interest or usurious increase, has wrought righteousness, and walked in my ordinances; he shall not die for the iniquities of his father, he shall surely live.

18 As for his father, because he cruelly oppressed, spoiled his brother by violence, and did what is not good among his people, lo, even he shall die in his iniquity.

18 But if his father grievously afflict, or plunder, he has wrought enmity in the midst of my people, and shall die in his iniquity. 18 But if his father grievously afflict, or plunder, he has wrought enmity in the midst of my people, and shall die in his iniquity.

19 Yet say you, Why? Doesn’t the son bear the iniquity of the father? When the son has done what is lawful and right, and has kept all my statutes, and has done them, he shall surely live.

19 καὶ ἐρεῖτε τί ὅτι οὐκ ἔλαβεν τὴν ἀδικίαν υἱὸς τοῦ πατρὸς αὐτοῦ;
19 Καὶ ἐρεῖτε· τί ὅτι οὐκ ἔλαβε τὴν ἀδικίαν υἱὸς τοῦ πατρός;
19 But you will say, Why hasn’t the son carried the iniquity of the father? Because the son has wrought judgment and mercy, has kept all my statues, and done them, he shall surely live. 19 But you will say, Why hasn’t the son carried the iniquity of the father? Because the son has wrought judgment and mercy, has kept all my statues, and done them, he shall surely live.

20 The soul that sins, it shall die. The son shall not bear the iniquity of the father, neither shall the father bear the iniquity of the son: the righteousness of the righteous shall be on him, and the wickedness of the wicked shall be on him.

20 But the soul that sins shall die; and the son shall not bear the iniquity of the father, nor shall the father bear the iniquity of the son: the righteousness of the righteous shall be on him, and the iniquity of the transgressor shall be on him. 20 But the soul that sins shall die; and the son shall not bear the iniquity of the father, nor shall the father bear the iniquity of the son: the righteousness of the righteous shall be on him, and the iniquity of the transgressor shall be on him.

21 But if the wicked will turn from all his sins that he has committed, and keep all my statutes, and do what is lawful and right, he shall surely live, he shall not die.

21 And if the transgressor turn away from all his iniquities which he has committed, and keep all my commandments, and do justice and mercy, he shall surely live, and shall by no means die. 21 And if the transgressor turn away from all his iniquities which he has committed, and keep all my commandments, and do justice and mercy, he shall surely live, and shall by no means die.

22 All his transgressions that he has committed, they shall not be mentioned to him: in his righteousness that he has done he shall live.

22 None of his trespasses which he has committed shall be remembers: in his righteousness which he has done he shall live. 22 None of his trespasses which he has committed shall be remembers: in his righteousness which he has done he shall live.

23 Have I any pleasure at all that the wicked should die? Says Adonai Yahweh; and not that he should return from his ways, and live?

23 μὴ θελήσει θελήσω τὸν θάνατον τοῦ ἀνόμου, λέγει κύριος, ὡς τὸ ἀποστρέψαι αὐτὸν ἐκ τῆς ὁδοῦ τῆς πονηρᾶς καὶ ζῆν αὐτόν; 23 μὴ θελήσει θελήσω τὸν θάνατον τοῦ ἀνόμου, λέγει Κύριος, ὡς τὸ ἀποστρέψαι αὐτὸν ἐκ τῆς ὁδοῦ τῆς πονηρᾶς καὶ ζῆν αὐτόν;
23 Shall I at all desire death of the sinner, says the Lord, as I desire that he should turn from his evil way, and live? 23 Shall I at all desire death of the sinner, says the Lord, as I desire that he should turn from his evil way, and live?

24 But when the righteous turns away from his righteousness, and commits iniquity, and does according to all the abominations that the wicked man does, he shall live? All his righteousness that he has done shall not be mentioned: in his trespass that he has trespassed, and in his sin that he has sinned, in them he shall die.

24 But when the righteous man turns away from his righteousness, and commits iniquity, according to all the transgressions which the transgressor has wrought, none of his righteousness which he has wrought shall be at all remembered: in his trespass in which he has trespassed, and in his sins in which he has sinned, in them he shall die.

25 Yet you say, The way of the Lord is not equal. Hear now, Oh house of Israēl; Is not my way equal? Are not your ways unequal?

ἀκούσατε δή, πᾶς οἶκος Ἰσραήλ· μὴ ὁδός μου οὐ κατευθύνει;
οὐχὶ ὁδὸς ὑμῶν οὐ κατευθύνει;
ἀκούσατε δὴ πᾶς οἶκος Ἰσραήλ· μὴ ὁδός μου οὐ κατευθύνει;
οὐχὶ ὁδὸς ὑμῶν οὐ κατευθύνει;
25 Yet you have said, The way of the Lord is not straight. PLEASE Hear, all the house of Israēl; won’t my way be straight? Is your way straight? 25 Yet you have said, The way of the Lord is not straight. PLEASE Hear now, all the house of Israēl; won’t my way be straight? Is your way straight?

26 When a righteous man turns away from his righteousness, and commits iniquity, and dies in them; for his iniquity that he has done he shall die.

26 When the righteous turns away from his righteousness and commits a trespass, and dies in the trespass he has committed, he shall even die in it. 26 When the righteous turns away from his righteousness and commits a trespass, and dies in the trespass he has committed, he shall even die in it.

27 Again, when the wicked man turns away from his wickedness that he has committed, and does what is lawful and right, he shall save his soul alive.

27 And when the wicked man turns away from his wickedness that he has committed, and shall do judgment and justice, he has kept his soul, 27 And when the wicked man turns away from his wickedness that he has committed, and shall do judgment and justice, he has kept his soul,

28 Because he considers, and turns away from all his transgressions that he has committed, he shall surely live, he shall not die.

28 and has turned away from all his ungodliness which he has committed: he shall surely live, he shall not die. 28 and has turned away from all his ungodliness which he has committed: he shall surely live, he shall not die.

29 Yet says the house of Israēl, The way of the Lord is not equal. Oh house of Israēl, are not my ways equal? Are not your ways unequal?

μὴ ὁδός μου οὐ κατορθοῖ, οἶκος Ἰσραήλ;
οὐχὶ ὁδὸς ὑμῶν οὐ κατορθοῖ;
μὴ ὁδός μου οὐ κατορθοῖ, οἶκος Ἰσραήλ;
οὐχὶ ὁδὸς ὑμῶν οὐ κατορθοῖ;
29 Yet the house of Israēl say, The way of the Lord is not right. Is not my way right, Oh house of Israēl? Is not your way wrong? 29 Yet the house of Israēl say, The way of the Lord is not right. Is not my way right, Oh house of Israēl? Is not your way wrong?

30 Therefore I will judge you, Oh house of Israēl, everyone according to his ways, says Adonai Yahweh. Repent, and turn yourselves from all your transgressions; so iniquity shall not be your ruin.

30 I will judge you, Oh house of Israēl, says the Lord, each one according to his way: be converted, and turn from all your ungodliness, and it shall not become to you the punishment of iniquity. 30 I will judge you, Oh house of Israēl, says the Lord, each one according to his way: be converted, and turn from all your ungodliness, and it shall not become to you the punishment of iniquity.

31 Cast away from you all your transgressions, by which you have transgressed; and make you a new heart and a new spirit; for why will you die, Oh house of Israēl?

31 ἀπορρίψατε ἀπὸ ἑαυτῶν πάσας τὰς ἀσεβείας, ὑμῶν ἃς ἠσεβήσατε εἰς ἐμέ, καὶ ποιήσατε ἑαυτοῖς καρδίαν καινὴν καὶ πνεῦμα καινόν· καὶ ἵνα τί ἀποθνῄσκετε, οἶκος Ἰσραήλ; 31 ἀπορρίψατε ἀφ’ ἑαυτῶν πάσας τὰς ἀσεβείας ὑμῶν, ἃς ἠσεβήσατε εἰς ἐμὲ καὶ ποιήσατε ἑαυτοῖς καρδίαν καινὴν καὶ πνεῦμα καινόν· καὶ ἱνατί ἀποθνήσκετε, οἶκος Ἰσραήλ;
31 Cast away from yourselves all your ungodliness in which you have sinned against me; and make to yourselves a new heart and a new spirit; for why should you die, Oh house of Israēl? 31 Cast away from yourselves all your ungodliness in which you have sinned against me; and make to yourselves a new heart and a new spirit; for why should you die, Oh house of Israēl?

32 For I have no pleasure in the death of him who dies, says Adonai Yahweh; therefore turn yourselves, and live you.

32 For I don’t desire the death of him who dies, says the Lord. 32 For I don’t desire the death of him who dies, says the Lord.
