Eliphaz: God Is Just
1 Call now, if there is any that will answer you; and to which of the saints will you turn?
| 1 But call, if anyone will listen to you, or if you shall see any of the holy angels. | 1 But call, if anyone will listen to you, or if you shall see any of the holy angels. |
2 For wrath kills the foolish man, and envy slays the silly one.
| 2 For wrath destroys the foolish one, and envy slays him who has gone astray. | 2 For wrath destroys the foolish one, and envy slays him who has gone astray. |
3 I have seen the foolish taking root; but suddenly I cursed his habitation.
| 3 And I have seen foolish ones taking root; but suddenly their habitation was devoured. | 3 And I have seen foolish ones taking root; but suddenly their habitation was devoured. |
4 His children are far from safety, and they are crushed in the gate, neither is there any to deliver them.
| 4 Let their children be far from safety, and let them be crushed at the doors of vile men, and let there be no deliverer. | 4 Let their children be far from safety, and let them be crushed at the doors of vile men, and let there be no deliverer. |
5 Whose harvest the hungry eats up, and takes it even out of the thorns, and the robber swallows up their substance.
| 5 For what they have collected, the just shall eat; but they shall not be delivered out of calamities: let their strength be utterly exhausted. | 5 For what they have collected, the just shall eat; but they shall not be delivered out of calamities: let their strength be utterly exhausted. |
6 Although affliction doesn’t come forth of the dust, neither does trouble spring out of the ground;
| 6 For labour cannot by any means come out of the earth, nor shall trouble spring out of the mountains. | 6 For labour cannot by any means come out of the earth, nor shall trouble spring out of the mountains. |
7 Yet man is born to trouble, as the sparks fly upward.
| 7 yet man is born to labour, and even so the vulture’s young seek the high places. | 7 yet man is born to labour, and even so the vulture’s young seek the high places. |
8 I would seek to God, and to God would I commit my cause.
| 8 Nevertheless I will beseech the Lord, and will call on the Lord, the sovereign of all; | 8 Nevertheless I will beseech the Lord, and will call on the Lord, the sovereign of all; |
9 Which does great things and unsearchable; marvellous things without number.
| 9 who does great things and untraceable, glorious things also, and marvellous, of which there is no number. | 9 who does great things and untraceable, glorious things also, and marvellous, of which there is no number. |
10 Who gives rain on the earth, and sends waters on the fields.
| 10 who gives rain on the earth, sending water on the earth. | 10 who gives rain on the earth, sending water on the earth. |
11 To set up on high those who be low; that those which mourn may be exalted to safety.
| 11 who exalts the lowly, and raises up those who are lost. | 11 who exalts the lowly, and raises up those who are lost. |
12 He disappoints the devices of the crafty, so that their hands cannot perform their enterprise.
| 12 frustrating the counsels of the crafty, and their hands shall not perform the truth. | 12 frustrating the counsels of the crafty, and their hands shall not perform the truth. |
13 He takes the wise in their own craftiness; and the counsel of the deceitful is carried headlong.
| 13 who takes the wise in their wisdom, and subverts the counsel of the crafty | 13 who takes the wise in their wisdom, and subverts the counsel of the crafty |
14 They meet with darkness in the daytime, and grope in the noonday as in the night.
| 14 In the day darkness shall come on them, and let them grope in the noon-day even as in the night. | 14 In the day darkness shall come on them, and let them grope in the noon-day even as in the night. |
15 But he saves the poor from the sword, from their mouth, and from the hand of the mighty.
| 15 and let them perish in war, and let the weak escape from the hand of the mighty. | 15 and let them perish in war, and let the weak escape from the hand of the mighty. |
16 So the poor has hope, and iniquity stops her mouth.
| 16 And let the weak have hope, but the mouth of the unjust be stopped. | 16 And let the weak have hope, but the mouth of the unjust be stopped. |
17 Behold, happy is the man whom God corrects; therefore don’t despise you the chastening of the Almighty.
| 17 But blessed is the man whom the Lord has reproved; and don’t reject you the chastening of the Almighty. | 17 But blessed is the man whom the Lord has reproved; and don’t reject you the chastening of the Almighty. |
18 For he makes sore, and binds up: he wounds, and his hands make whole.
| 18 for he causes a man to be in pain, and restores him again: he smites, and his hands heal. | 18 for he causes a man to be in pain, and restores him again: he smites, and his hands heal. |
19 He shall deliver you in six troubles: yes, in seven there shall no evil touch you.
19
| 19 Six time he shall deliver you out of distresses; and in the seventh harm shall not touch you. | 19 Six time he shall deliver you out of distresses; and in the seventh harm shall not touch you. |
20 In famine he shall redeem you from death; and in war from the power of the sword.
| 20 In famine he shall deliver you from death; and in war he shall free you from the power of the sword. | 20 In famine he shall deliver you from death; and in war he shall free you from the power of the sword. |
21 You shall be hid from the scourge of the tongue: neither shall you be afraid of destruction when it comes.
| 21 He shall hide you from the scourge of the tongue; and you shall not be afraid of coming evils. | 21 He shall hide you from the scourge of the tongue; and you shall not be afraid of coming evils. |
22 At destruction and famine you shall laugh: neither shall you be afraid of the beasts of the earth.
| 22 You shall laugh at the unrighteous and the lawless; and you shall not be afraid of wild beasts. | 22 You shall laugh at the unrighteous and the lawless; and you shall not be afraid of wild beasts. |
23 For you shall be in league with the stones of the field; and the beasts of the field shall be at peace with you.
| 23 For the wild beasts of the field shall be at peace with you. | 23 For the wild beasts of the field shall be at peace with you. |
24 And you shall know that your tent shall be in peace; and you shall visit your habitation, and shall not sin.
| 24 Then you shall know that your house shall be at peace, and the provision for your tent shall not fail. | 24 Then you shall know that your house shall be at peace, and the provision for your tent shall not fail. |
25 You shall know also that your seed shall be great, and your offspring as the grass of the earth.
| 25 And you shall know that your seed shall be abundant; and your children shall be like the herbage of the field. | 25 And you shall know that your seed shall be abundant; and your children shall be like the herbage of the field. |
26 You shall come to your grave in a full age, like as a shock of grain comes in in his season.
| 26 And you shall come to the grave like ripe corn reaped in its season, or as a heap of the corn-flour collected in proper time. | 26 And you shall come to the grave like ripe corn reaped in its season, or as a heap of the corn-flour collected in proper time. |
27 Lo this, we have searched it, so it is; hear it, and know it for your good.
| 27 Behold, we have thus sought out these matters; these are what we have heard; but do you reflect with yourself, if you have done anything wrong. | 27 Behold, we have thus sought out these matters; these are what we have heard; but do you reflect with yourself, if you have done anything wrong. |
